discriminate againstwomenandtreatthemas second-classcitizens.Inmanycountries,womenare
subjectedto violence,whichthe governmentdoesnothingtostopbecause theirlawsapprove practices
like 'honour'killings,(where awomaniskilledbyafamilymemberif she doessomethingwhichis
thoughtto bringshame on the family),marital rape andwife beating.Inseveralcountrieslawsmake it
more difficultforawomanto be independentbecausetheyrestrictwomen'sproperty,employmentand
citizenshiprights.
