A few suggestions for improving our use of
language
Use the Language with Care
Go for the Active Voice
Use Words that Communicate Feelings
10. 4 Avoid Modifiers- A few examples are: perhaps,
may be, could be, and should be. Avoid saying
‘you could get the material’ when you can say
‘you will get the material.
5 Use Metaphors to Your Advantage- Can help
you think of appropriate similies.
6 Use Words which Come Easily to You
11.
Eye Contact- When you enter the room or the
venue, look at your entire audience in one
quick sweep. Then take a few seconds to look
around the room and ‘your space’-the area
from where you will be addressing the group.
12.
Be as relaxed as possible.
Stand straight so that your body is erect. Take care,
however, that the process of standing upright is not
transformed into stiffness.
Your body weight should be balanced equally on both
your feet.
Avoid leaning on the lectern or a side wall.
Avoid rocking movements. Constant shifting can
district your audience.
Place your notes or index cards at an angle where you
don’t have to slouch in order to read. Precious eye
contact is lost when you have to bend to consult your
notes. Decide where you want your notes to be placed
for easy reading.

15.
Grab the lectern for support.
Keep your hand in your pockets all through
your presentation.
Clutch your arms and lock them against your
chest.
Fiddle with your jewellery or any other prop.
17.
Stop rubbing your nose, dangling your
keychain around your finger, pulling at your
cuffs or waving your hands as if you were
directing an orchestra.
