3. WHAT IS SCRABBLE?
• SCRABBLE is a board game played by two
to four players. The objective is to acquire
points by forming words in the board with 225
square grids, using any of the 100 tiles
printed with letters of the English alphabet
4. How did Scrabble become known
to us?
The history of scrabble determines how it falls to its
proper place in the world of recreation. It created
an easy entrance into the world of sports in a form
of a word game. Here is how scrabble was made
known to us today.
• 1931 – Architect Alfred Mosher Butts
invented the game scrabble which was known
then as LEXIKO. The first time was played, the
board is not available, so he modified it to a
game using a board.
• 1948 – James Brunot asked Alfred Butts to
give him the right to distribute the game.
5. • 1952 – Scrabble reached its peak and became the
people’s favorite.
• 1972 – Selchow and Righter purchased the
trademark from Brunot, giving the company the
exclusive right to distribute the game. In 1986 the
company was sold to Coleco.
• 1989 – the scrabble was bought out by Hasbro
due to Coleco’s bankruptcy.
6. WHAT ARE THE RULES IN PLAYING
SCRABBLE?
• How to start the game.
Each player should take one tile out of the
bag. The player who has the letter closest to the
first letter of the alphabet shall be the one to make
the first turn. The blank tile is considered as the
highest tile in the selection turn.
7. WHAT ARE THE RULES IN PLAYING
SCRABBLE?
• The first word score.
A player will start
the game by placing
the arranged letters
from the drawn tiles.
The star is equivalent
to a double-word
score.
8. WHAT ARE THE RULES IN PLAYING
SCRABBLE?
• Replacing scrabble tiles
When the player places tiles on the
scrabble board, the player draws another tile
on the bag to replace the used letter tiles.
9. WHAT ARE THE RULES IN PLAYING
SCRABBLE?
• The fifty-point bonus
When the player has created a word using
his/her entire tile and was able to place it on
the scrabble board, that player will receive fifty
bonus points.
10. WHAT ARE THE RULES IN PLAYING
SCRABBLE?
• End of the game
When all the tiles from the tile bag have
been taken and used by the players it is the
end of the game.

• Tallying scores
Once the game ended, the points from the
tiles left on the tile rack will be deducted from
total score of the player.

SCRABBLE?
• Accepted words
Any word which can be found in the
Standard English Dictionary is allowed in the
game, except for proper nouns, abbreviations,
prefixes, and suffixes. Words that require
hyphens or apostrophes are also not allowed.

• DOUBLE WORD SCORES
the light red cells that
are found running diagonal
towards the four corners of
the board. Placing a word on
one of these will multiply the
total point value of the word
to two.
15. EXTRA POINT VALUES
• TRIPLE WORD SCORES
dark red cells that are
found on the four sides of the
board equidistant from each
other. When a word is placed
using this square, the points
for the word will be multiplied
by three.
