Qualities of A Good Sports Writer <ul><li>Must know sports : rules, strategy, team and players’ records </li></ul><ul><li>Must attend the games or meets as a reporter , not as a spectator or cheerer </li></ul><ul><li>Must know coaches and players as intimately as possible </li></ul><ul><li>Must Observe accuracy . </li></ul><ul><li>Must be able to take notes quickly without losing the sequence of the play. </li></ul><ul><li>Must be fair and unbiased in reporting , even though he has a favorite team. </li></ul><ul><li>Must not make comments without supporting them with facts on which they are based, although sports writers have more freedom than any other news writers. </li></ul><ul><li>Must use the specialized language of the particular sports that he is reporting. </li></ul><ul><li>Must avoid sports slang and trite expressions which hack writers use today. He should tell the story in plain, factual terms, that describe the action. </li></ul><ul><li>Must bear in mind that he writes for his readers and not for himself. </li></ul>

  9. 9. The Body 1. Team and/or Individual Standing- if the event is part of the a series of games, the story must report how the teams or players stand in relation to their competitors 2. Decisive play- this is the most crucial part of the game that gives a certain team the winning margin 3. Best scores for the day – the scores usually appear in the headline and in the lead. However, the writer must not neglect the top scorer of the day. 4. Play-by-play – due to limited space, play-by-play has to be condensed. In top boxing events, a separate round-by-round account is provided, describing the progress of the fight in detail. 5. Quotation – It is customary for the hero of the day to have his sentiments recorded for posterity.
  10. 10. Suggested Pointers: <ul><li>The Score or Outcome – Who won? What is the result of the game? </li></ul><ul><li>The Significance of the Outcome – Was a champion at stake? Do the standings of the teams change? Who gets the cup? Is the grudge wiped out? </li></ul><ul><li>Highlights of the game – Find the turning point of the game. Describe spectacular plays. Tell about the last minute fumble, or last three second basket from midcourt if it were a basketball game. </li></ul><ul><li>Comparison of the Teams- Which was the better team? Was the defending champion out-jumped on the rebound? Who did better from the foul line? </li></ul><ul><li>Individual stars – refers to the heroes of the game. </li></ul><ul><li>Weather conditions – mud, sunshine, heat cold, or wind may have bearing on the game. </li></ul><ul><li>Crowd and celebration – how did the spectators behave? Were they particularly hostile to the referee? </li></ul>

Tupas First Posted 01:13:52 30/08/2010   Filed Under: Volleyball, V-League     MANILA, Philippines—Adamson rolled to an eighth straight win while San Sebastian-Excelroof coasted past Ateneo Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 Second Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.   The Lady Falcons leaned on the trio of Nerissa Bautista, Angela Benting and Michelle Laborte in crushing an already-eliminated National U squad, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20, for their 10th win in 12 games.   The Lady Stags kept the Lady Falcons company on top by overwhelming Ateneo, 25-19, 25-17, 27-25.   San Sebastian trailed almost the entire third set, and saved a set point at 23-24, before Suzanne Roces delivered crucial kills to seal the win for the Lady Stags.

The Lady Eagles skidded to their third straight loss for a 6-5 card, opening up an opportunity for Lyceum and Far Eastern U, which were playing at presstime, to crash the Final Four.   Both the Lady Pirates and the Lady Tamaraws are running fifth with identical 5-5 records.   Thai import Jeng Bualee led the Lady Stags with 19 points, while Analyn Benito contributed 12, Roces finished with 11, and Elaine Cruz picked up eight points.   The Stags yielded nine more points on errors but made up for it with a solid attacking game.   The Lady Falcons, led by Bautista with 13 points, simply overwhelmed the Lady Bulldogs with their solid attacking game.   Adamson drew 43 points off attacks, but had 22 errors compared to NU’s 11.   Benting and Laborte had 11 points for the Lady Falcons, who also got nine markers from Pau Soriano.
