This presentation summarizes information about chitosan fiber. It introduces the presenter and audience. The content includes definitions of chitosan as a dietary fiber derived from chitin in shellfish processing. Sources of chitosan are discussed as being fungi, arthropod exoskeletons, and some fish and amphibians. Properties of chitosan include strong antibacterial effects, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and humidity absorption. Chitosan fiber can be spun and has strength similar to viscose rayon. The preparation process of chitosan fiber involves spinning, drawing, rolling, washing, drying and cutting. Applications of chitosan fiber include medical uses and wound dressings that

5. 1. What is Chitosan ?
Chitosan is a dietary fiber derived from chitin that
is made as a byproduct of shellfish processing.
Chitosan is formed as a product of the alkaline
deacetylation of chitin (aminopolysaccharide, or
a combination of a sugar and a protein).
Chitosan not only exhibits biological activities
(hypo-cholesterolemic, antimicrobial, wound
healing) but also is being researched for its
application in pharmaceutical drug delivery, as
an excipient, binder, and tablet coater.
6. 2. Source of Chitosan
1. It is characterized component of the cell walls of fungi , the
exoskeleton of arthropods and such as crustaceans ( e.g.
crabs , lobster shrimp ) .
2. The backs and internal shells of cephalopods , including
squid and octopuses , on the scale and other soft tissues
of fish and some amphibians .
3. Therefore the major source of chitin / chitosan production
in the world is currently from crab and shrimp shells .

8. 3. Properties of Chitosan
The fundamental characteristics of chitosan are :
1 . Very strong antibacterial effect
2 . Total biodegradability
3 . Biocompatibility
4 . High humidity absorption
9. 4. Chitosan Fiber
• It is obtained from treating Chitin
with alkali .
• It can be spun into filament and the
strength of the fibre is similar to
viscose rayon .
• It is being developed for slow drug
release membrane .

13. 7. Conclusion
Chitosan is gaining popularity as a
textile fibre which can be specifically
used for medical purposes, despite
the problems faced in its process-
ability and inferior mechanical
properties. It is a unique material
with certain special properties,
preferred for medical usage. It has
been found that wound dressings
from chitosan can increase the rate
of healing by 75%.
