13. The world of media is organic and in the 21st Century is relevant in more areas than the
traditional digital outlets. The presence of You Tube, Facebook, Twitter and any social media
site means that there is greater opportunity to use creative skills and a for me to find a
career in the area I love. Media is an important tool for influencing people in today's
society, whether it be deliberate or accidental. With the opportunity to create film, comes
the obligation to produce high quality, appropriate content and publication and by having a
place on the right course I will be prepared for this new future.
I have had various opportunities to be both in front of and behind the scenes, acting in a
school drama production, supporting lighting for "Billy Elliot", being a stagehand for
"Oliver", playing saxophone for community events, filming for college productions, photography
for community and family events and most recently I produced a photo reel to celebrate my
grandmas 90th birthday.
Whilst studying Creative Media I have enjoyed the challenge of bringing the raw elements of
sound, effects and film together to create a final product. Having access to all these
different opportunities has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in media and more
specifically post-production.
Beyond my studies I have been a member of the scouting movement for ten years, from Beaver to
Explorer Scout. Music is important in my life and I have played both the piano and the
saxophone; this formal learning of music has led me to develop an eclectic taste in popular
music and in particular music for film. I particularly enjoyed working collaboratively with my
music tutor to score the film for several of my college projects. In my local parish I play an
active role, as youth club helper, as an altar-server and in training new altar servers, as
well as supporting fund raising for the church - I have recently enjoyed myself at a
fundraiser helping run the bar and serve food. I took the opportunity to represent my parish
on pilgrimage to Lourdes where I was responsible for the daily transportation of a sick
pilgrim.
14. I enjoy watching film especially from the action genre and comedy programmes.
I have been training as a butcher for the last 18 months at the local family firm in my
village. My confidence has increased whilst working here, not only have I learnt how to handle
the products and manage money, I have also developed my inter-personal skills, handling tricky
customers. My next college project is of great personal interest as it offers exposure to the
expectations of a commercial brief, calling on my experiences as film producer and butcher. I
hope that seeing both sides of the counter will be advantageous to me in the world of
post-production.
I am passionate about my local football team - Leeds United. I closely follow their progress
and watch the matches with my dad. I used my love of the team to complete my most recent
college project, to create a documentary about Leeds fans. Prior to this experience I was not
aware of the possibilities that documentary production could offer and it has shown me that
experiencing all genres of media and all skills in media production is important to ensure
that I can make an informed choice of career. I know that by studying the right Media
Production course, my horizons will be broadened and I will have opportunity to gather the
toolkit I need to be successful in the industry
