2. 1) ACADEMICS
Two weeks remain before the commencement of the mid-year examinations. Parents are asked
once again to please encourage and support our learners in their studies.
MATRIC CERTICATES 2014
The 2014 Matric certificates have been received at the
school.
When collecting and signing for the certificates (past pupil
or parent), please bring along your ID Document.
As per the Education Department rulings, all unclaimed
certificates will be returned to the Education Department by
the end of 2015. They will remain there for a period of three
years after which time they will be destroyed.
READERS / SCRIBES FOR LEARNERS
URGENT
We are in urgent need of parents to assist as either readers or scribes for learners who are in
need of alternate assessment.

URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL PUPILS
 NO pupils will be allowed to go home early on any day or after a test without a written letter
from the parent requesting this. No emails!

4.  Permission for going home early will only be allowed for emergencies.
 If a pupil is too sick to stay for the full day after a test, then they must not come to school to
write, but must provide the school with a medical certificate.
PLEASE NOTE!
All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they
are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks
organized by various subject departments.
All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a
Monday or a Thursday test, a letter from the parent and the relevant chemist
slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and
medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is
required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any
exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed (not test days) is also
required.
Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as
these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education
Department.
Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until
first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be
required.

ME-X 2015
This time next week, the Matric Experience Expo will be underway at Tygervalley Shopping
Centre!
It runs from Thursday, 21 May to Sunday the 24 of May, and in conjunction with the Mall operating
times.
We have lots of exciting exhibitors attending the event, so make sure that you don’t miss out.
Bring along that dress that you just can’t wear again, because everyone has already seen you in it,
the costume jewellery that you bought specifically to go with that particular dress, those shoes that
you have discovered are only for sitting down in, or the lipstick that is a totally different colour on
you to the girl in the ad. The Princess Project will be thrilled to receive your donations which will
benefit a less fortunate matric learner who would otherwise not be able to afford a matric dance.
We would like to thank Mrs Christa Vermeulen for
the loan of the choir’s clothes rail and Mrs Heidi
Sparks for the loan of coat hangers from the school
shop for our event. These items will be used to
hang the dresses that we receive for the Princess
Project.
MADCO will be selling tickets to win some
absolutely stunning prizes, and we will also be
running a competition in conjunction with the expo.

9. RUGBY
Mikey de Klerk and Darren Harvey led out the
Trojans on a beautiful winter morning for their
first home game against Bergvliet.
They started out a bit nervous as this was their
first real test. Richard Thompson opened up the
scoring with a great try that was converted by
Mikey. After a multitude of penalties, Bergvliet
managed to score. They were tied 7 a piece and
Bergvliet’s supporters were very vocal next to
the field.
The forwards played with much improved
intensity leading to a beautifull try by Zack
Conradie. The backline ran great lines and their
handling was superb on the early wet field,
leading to 2 great tries by Caleb Adams, both
converted by Mikey. By halftime, we were leading
26 : 7 and they had silenced the Bergvliet
supporters.
The second half was started with a try by Enrico
Fernandes, followed by two awesome tries by
Mikey, and concluded with two storming tries by
“Beast”.
Once again, our defense was solid. We scored 9
tries, converted 3, finishing on 51 : 7.

8) ONE ACT PLAYS
Very few people who have not been closely associated with a theatrical production can fully
appreciate just how much time, effort and dedication goes into producing a 30 minute original play.
The fact that our learners managed to script-write, cast, set-design, find costumes and props,
rehearse and produce three entertaining House plays within 3 weeks of the 2nd
term, following two
long weekends, is a significant achievement! These learners gave up hours of their own time in
the evenings and over weekends to be on the stage rehearsing, working backstage or helping on
the sound and lighting balcony because they recognise that putting on a successful play takes a
real team effort.
CONGRATULATIONS to you all! Script-writers, Directors, Actors, backstage crew, Sound &
Lighting crew, front-of-house designers, poster designers, slide-show designers and House
Captains who introduced the plays – you did a STUNNING job!

Although these plays are intentionally entirely learner run, there are members of our Staff who
played vitally important background roles to enable the event to take place and we owe them a
HUGE THANK YOU for all their effort in enabling this wonderful cultural event on the Fairmont
Calendar.
First and foremost, Mrs Solomon who was once again the main organiser of the evening. It was
Mrs Solomon who had to draw up the rehearsal schedule, book the Hall, secure and liaise with the
adjudicator, arrange for the Hall to be set out to plan, design the programme, open and close the
evening, etc. She was assisted by several other members of staff: Ms Piek made the gorgeous
flower arrangement for the evening and helped judge Front of House; Mr Basson organised his
Sound and Lighting teams and judged Front of House; Mr Strydom and his team set up the Hall,
Mrs Nortier printed the programmes, and Ms Matthee ensured that all trophies were polished and
ready for the special evening, including several new trophies. We now have a trophy for each of
the above awards made on the evening.  Just one look at the faces of the children receiving
these awards on the evening shows how much they value and appreciate them.
Three staff members were responsible for supervising the House plays, providing support and
checking on progress and they had to be at every rehearsal, including all those over weekends:
Mrs McMillan (Muir), Mr Weber (Innes), and Ms Hancock (Dale). Without their support and the
hours they gave up to be at the school for the children, the plays would not be possible. Our warm
thanks to them for their commitment.
Finally, our thanks to the Parent Forum members and Mrs Sparks and her cleaning staff who
worked together to provide refreshments for the staff and guests attending the Plays. This is no
small task and was much appreciated.

14. 9) GR. 10 MUSIC PUPILS ON FINE MUSIC RADIO
The Gr. 10 music pupils have made history when they had the opportunity to do a live presentation
on Fine Music Radio. On Monday, 11 May 2015, a programme was done on “The Mighty Russian
Five”, 5 famous Composers from Russia. The pupils had to do research to compile their own
music and programme notes.
The class was quite keen to take on this project to broaden their general music knowledge and
also to get the chance to speak live on radio. They had a warm response from their classmates
and learned a lot.
The presenter, Mr. Carl Fourie, was very knowledgeable and did the necessary guidance and
encouragement to help them to produce a programme of high quality.
The presenter was very impressed by the high quality of research and diligence of our music
pupils. Well done to Luke Albert, Danielle Marais, Remi Ludick, Jinny Jin, Celine Gravenor, Zara
Scott, Shayla dos Santos, Gareth Howes and Camryn Stadler.

15. 10) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE
X-FACTOR MATHEMATICS REVISION
NEW SYLLABUS GR. 9 & 10
The workbook covers and aims the following:
The content is compiled to prepare grade 9 learners for
the Mathematical knowledge they would need in grade
10, according to the new syllabus.
The content is arranged and dealt with according to
subject.
Subdivisions start with summaries and examples. It is
presented very simply so that learners who battle will be
able to do the work that follows with ease.
The material is also stimulating for learners who do well
and want to practice and work out extra questions.
Learners can use the book independently and
successfully because answers are provided at the back
and steps in reaching answers are shown where
necessary.
Grade 10 work is clearly indicated as such.
Grade 10 learners who experience difficulty can go back
and re-do the grade 9 worksheets.
Certain questions are indicated with an asterisk for learners who like a challenge.
There are indicators which theory and examples must be studied for tests and examinations.
Learners can prepare for tests and examinations efficiently.
Success in Mathematics means practice, practice and more practice.
