• This is a fairly comprehensive course and the orientation for
new students is very well done. Though not my firm choice, I
think this will be a perfect backup choice.

• This university is a solid third choice. Though I didn’t find it
as interesting as the other courses I looked at, there is still
potential for some good expectances at Birmingham

13. Academic History
I studied several films during my English GCSE, in order to see
how language was used as a shorthand in films. This is what
initially sparked my interest as a film-maker, as it allowed me
to see more clearly the minute details that go into film-
making. I also learned a surprising amount about film-making
when studying history. As history, both modern and classical is
often the subject and almost always the inspiration for any
given film. Learning to see the parallels between the two is
something that, I think, gives me an edge in my film
production. The first final project I created at York College,
which was a documentary about autism, solidified my desire
to pursue a career in media and has kept me eager to study
the craft further at a university standard.
14. Current Study
My current study has built my knowledge base and confidence massively over the last
two years. I’ve learnt a lot about how to shoot a scene in terms of colour, camera
position, costumes, dialogue and more. First and foremost, I’ve extended my skills
with adobe programs hugely. And now have at least an intermediate knowledge of
Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Audition. PremierePro especially, which I have become
quite proficient in. This will be useful, as the universities I have looked into all use this
software to edit their films. This makes me feel as though I have more of an edge
going forward. Photoshop and audition will also be very useful talents to have when
making posters or working on sound effects. The most useful projects I have worked
on have definitely been my FMP’s for both years. The documentary taught me a lot
about working to a time limit, gaining contacts for interviews, the structure and format
of landscape shots etc. While the Web-Series helped me a lot to learn about character
development and telling a cohesive story across five different short films/episodes.
Above all, these projects have taught me about how important it is to be passionate
about your work and take confidence in what you do. After working with a lot of
actors and crew members over the last two years, I know for sure that this is what I
want to pursue at university. As I have enjoyed almost all of my experiences in the
different roles in film production, be it acting, directing, cameraman, editing and
more.
15. The Future
In future, I want to go into screenwriting and
story production for films, TV and short films. As
story and character development in film has
always been very interesting and engaging to
me. Expanding my skills and learning more
about the vast world of media production at
University seems the next logical step on from
that. I would love a chance to see how
professional film-makers go about these
processes.
16. Outside College
Outside of college, I spend a lot of time watching TV
and Films with a few good friends, who also enjoy
analysing the characters and story to determine its
overall quality and story layers. This is a hugely
enjoyable pastime that I have indulged in since I
was in my early teens and has really helped me to
understand more about the minutiae of detail that
goes into crafting a story and engaging characters.
This makes me a good candidate for university and I
already have a keen analytical eye for visual media.
17. Conclusion
I really want to go to university, as it will allow
me to rub elbows with the next generation of
film-makers, build my contacts, learn about my
craft and allow me to indulge in something that I
am very passionate about. I’ll be a good
candidate for university study, because I always
try to put my all into the work I’m doing.
18. Introduction
I’m applying for film production courses at three
separate Universities. I’ve always had a strong
interest in media, however, I haven’t acted on it
as a career until recently. I know that ascending
my skills to a university-level standard would be
advantageous if I’m going to pursue a final
career in the industry.
