- The respondent conducted a survey among UK music magazine audiences, primarily classmates aged 16-24, to learn about their preferences
- The majority of respondents were female who preferred a printed magazine focused on pop music, including interviews and reviews of both new and established artists
- Most respondents said they sometimes or do not buy music magazines but would pay £2-3 and are interested in attending concerts discussed in the magazine
2. I made an survey on Survey Monkey about music magazines.
I wanted to find out more about my audience and what they like to
read about in a music magazine.
My responses will be influenced by the fact that I am an Media
Studies student, and most of my responses would be by my other
classmates.
3. What is your gender?
Based on the result on this question, I am
going to aim my music magazine more
towards females than man. I would do
this, by using bright colors with a clean
and tidy finish.
My audience target:
Female:
• 73% - 19 people
Male:
• 23% - 6 people
Other:
• 4% - 1 person
The result on this question, could be explained by the fact
that there are more girls in my media class, and the fact
that I have more girl-friends than boy-friends.
4. How old are you?
My audience target:
16-24 years old:
• 96% - 25 people
25-32 years old:
• 4% - 1 person
The result on this question tells me that I should aim my
magazine to young adults and teenagers, rather than
older people.
Therefore I am going to write about music and stuff
teenagers are interested in.
As on the other question, the result
could be explained by the fact that my
friends and my classmates are 17 or 18
years old.
5. Do you buy music magazines?
The result on this question is quite mixed but overall, most
people only buy music magazines sometimes or not at all.
If I want to make a good magazine, which appeals to “my
audience”, I need to find out what content they would like,
so that the blue bar gets lower, and the green/yellow gets
higher.
My target audience:
Yes:
8% - 2 people
No:
62% - 16 people
Sometimes:
31% - 8 people
6. If yes, how often?
My audience target:
Weekly:
• 14% - 2 people
Monthly:
• 29% - 4 people
Just when I see a magazine that I like:
• 43% - 6 people
Other:
The two people who picked the option “other”,
specified their answer with “never” and “I don’t
buy”.
7. What music genre do
you like the best?
My audience target:
Pop:
• 48% - 12 people
Rock:
• 28% - 7 people
R&B:
• 16% - 4 people
Electro:
• 4% - 1 person
Other (Hip-hop):
• 4% - 1 person
The result on this question, tells me that my audience is most
interested in pop music. Which emphasizes the fact that I want and
should make a pop related music magazine. I will have to include
some rock music, and maybe some R&B music in my magazine as
well.
8. Do you go to concerts
and festivals?
My audience target:
Yes, I go to concerts and festivals:
• 56% - 14 people
No, I only go to concerts:
• 16% - 4 people
No, I only go to festivals:
• 8% - 2 people
I have not had the chance to go any concerts or
festivals, but I would love to:
• 16% - 4 people
No, I have not been to any:
• 4% - 1 person
The result on this question tells me that almost everyone
taking the survey, goes to either concerts or festivals.
This means that I would have to include something
about concerts and festivals in my music magazine.
9. What feature of a music magazine
are you most interested in?
My audience target:
Articles:
• 11% - 3 people
Gossip:
• 23% - 6 people
Interviews:
• 43% - 11 people
Reviews:
• 23% - 6 people
The result on this question tells me that almost half of my reader
audience, like to read interviews. People also like to read reviews
and about gossip. This are three features that I will have to include
in my music magazine.
10. What sort of artists would you like
to read about?
My audience target:
New artists:
• 31% - 8 people
Old artists:
• 8% - 2 people
Both new and old artists:
• 61% - 16 people
The result on this questions tells me that I mainly have to write
about a mixture of both new and old artists, with a little more
focus on new artists.
11. Which way would you prefer to
read a magazine?
My audience target:
Online:
• 27% - 7 people
Printed:
• 73% - 19 people
The result on this question tells me that 2/3 of my readers
would rather read a printed magazine than a online one.
My plan was to make a printed version, and the result on
this question emphasizes this statement.
12. How much are you willing to pay
for a music magazine?
My audience target:
£1-£1.99:
• 15% - 4 people
£2-£2.99:
• 31% - 8 people
£3-£3.99:
• 23% - 6 people
£4-£4.99:
• 23% - 6 people
£5-£5.99:
• 4% - 1 person
More than the answers above:
• 4% - 1 person
The result on this question, tells me that
most people how took my survey, would pay
2 or 3 £ for a music magazine.
My plan was to make a monthly magazine
for about 4 or 5 pounds a month, but I will
maybe have to changes that plan.
