Lily Harrison conducted a survey of 82 respondents ages 16-20 to discover their interests in fashion magazines. The majority (73%) of respondents were ages 16-20. Females made up 85% of respondents. Vogue was the most popular magazine mentioned at 53%. Respondents preferred niche magazines over mainstream and were influenced most by social media influencers and friends for fashion choices. Look books and makeup/cosmetics were the most interesting content. Respondents were willing to pay £2.50 or more for magazines.
2. About
I have conducted a survey to discover the interests of my audience.
The survey was open to everyone, however in this PowerPoint I will only explore the
age range of 16-20 (as 60 out of the 80 participants fell into this age range.)
In total, I had 82 responses from my survey. The survey included 10 questions about
magazines, furthermore most being multiple choice.
3. Q1- Age
As you can see from the bar chart opposite,
73.17% of people who had taken part in my
survey were between 16-20 years old. This
was the majority vote amongst my voters.
Perhaps the majority of people were in that
age bracket because of the way I distributed
my survey (the majority being on social
media platforms Snapchat and Instagram.)
I did share my survey on Facebook, and
perhaps this is why there was a spike in older
age brackets (as most my older connections
are through Facebook.)
4. Q2- Gender
My survey shows that the
majority of my audience who
took part in the survey were
female at 85.37% and 70 of the
82 being female. This is mostly
because it is about fashion
magazines. This proves that the
majority of people who are
interested in fashion magazines
are female, however there is a
secondary audience of male’s
who are also interested in fashion
magazines (14% and 12 male
participants.)
5. The following slides
% statistics
The following slides and questions
are based on the 16-20 age range
only. This is to prove my results
relevance to the target audience in
the brief.
6. Q3- What magazine are you most likely to
read of the list below?
• Vogue
• Elle
• Dazed and Confused
• i-D magazine
• Pop
7. Results
The most popular magazine out of these
was Vogue at 53%. This is surprising, as
Vogue has a target audience of a 30
year old woman. This conveys the
sophisticated cultural understanding of
my audience.
9. Results
As you can see from the pie chart opposite,
the most popular cove was number 1, at
54%. This suggests that the audience liked
the close up framing compared to the mid
and long shot front covers. Cover number 1
might have been the most popular because
it featured a mainstream singer- Tinashe. All
models on the cover make direct eye contact
with the camera.
10. Q5- Out of the following, who influences
your fashion choices the most?
• Online social media
influencers
• Celebrities
• Fashion events
• Friends
• High-street brands
• Other (please specify)
11. Results
My result show that online social
media influencers are the most
popular option. This may be because
my chosen age range are typically
very familiar with technology and
social media (at 40%). The second
most popular answer was friends. This
proves that my demographic is very
sociable and may turn to friends for
fashion advice (at 21%). Celebrities
were a close runner up to friends, at
18%. This suggests celebrities are still
fairly influential in picking fashion
choices.
12. Q6- Would you prefer to read a mainstream
or niche fashion magazine?
As you can see from the bar
chart opposite, Niche is the
preferred magazine style at 54%.
14. Results
As you can see, the Margot Robbie magazine cover was more popular compared to the Drew
Barrymore cover. This may be because Margot Robbie is more well known amongst my target
audience, perhaps influencing their decision.
15. Q8- How much are you willing to pay for an
on-the-shelf fashion magazine?
• 0-99p
• £1.00-£1.49
• £1.50-£1.99
• £2.00-£2.49
• £2.50 or more
16. Results
By just a margin, my audience
suggests they are willing to pay
£2.50 or more for an on the shelf
magazine (at 25%) £1.50 to £1.99
to £2.00 to £2.49 both came up
as 24%. This reflects the
demographic as having typically
more disposable income than
other demographics.
17. Q9- How much would you agree to the following
statement: 'Fashion magazines showcase a range of
diverse issues in their content.'
The choice for this was between 1 to 100. The average answer
was 47. This suggests that my audience disagrees with the
statement. Perhaps in my magazine I will showcase a range of
diverse issues to meet the audience needs to provide more
diversity.
18. Q10- What are you most interested in when
reading a magazine?
• Makeup and cosmetics
• Events in fashion industry
• Look book's
• Photography
• Icons in fashion industry
19. Results
Look books were the most popular
option (40%). This shows that my
audience are very interested in fashion
and different styles. Makeup also didn't
surprise me, as the audience who I
collected these results from are very
interested in cosmetics (35%)
