Market Research Music Magazine
Introduction
In the process of making my music magazine I carried out a primary research survey where I
asked the public 10 questions. This was in order to help myself design my magazine and
decided upon target audience, style, genre and content.
The majorityof people who
tookthissurveywere age’s15-24.There was verylittle aged35 to 44. There were none aged25 to
34 or 45 to 54 whichcouldshowthat maybe that particularage ranges don’tuse social networking
sitesasmuch as 15-24 yearolds. 92% pf people whotookthissurveyare 15-24 and 8% are 35-44. It
couldalsoshowhowyoungerpeople take more of aninterestinmusicratherthan olderpeople.
The female populationonthis
surveyovertakesthe male populationbyabout 60%. There are 83% of femaleswhichhave answered
thissurveyandonly17% of maleswhohave answeredthissurvey.Thiscouldperhapsshow that
femalesare more interestedinsurveysthanmalesastheychecksocial networkingsitesmore often.
Thisquestionshowsquite a
varietyof differentanswersasthere isatleastone personwholikesone of thatmusicgenre.The
mostpopularwas indie/alternative as41% of people chose this.Pop,R&B,Classical,House and
Otherall had a popularityof 8% whichshowshow theyaren’taspopularas the othersbut are still
seenascommon choice therefore Iwill includeindiemusicasthe mostcoveredgenre of my
magazine
10 out of 12 people saidthey
listentomusiceverydaythistotalsto 83%. Therefore thisshowsthatmaybe youngergenerations
listentomusicmore than an olderpersonwoulddue tohavingmore time inthe week.Thingssuch
as festivalsmayalsoappeal more toyoungergenerationsthereforeIwill include advertisementsof
thisinmy magazine.
Most of the people thathave
answeredthishave beento amusicconcert apart fromone.This representsthatinamusic
magazine a page includinginformationabout musicconcertswouldbe importantbecause somany
people are interestedinattendingmusicconcerts.8% votedthattheyhave neverbeentoa music
concert andthiscouldbe because it’snottheirtype of scene.33% votedthattheyhave beentoa
musicconcert once or twice and58% votedthat theyattendmusicconcertsregularly. Because thisis
a popularchoice I will feature live reviews,competitionsforconcertsandgigsandfestivals.Asthese
are all thingsthatwouldattract a buyingcustomer.
It isquite obviousthat
the mainreasonsomeone buysamusicmagazine isbecause theysee aband/artistthattheylike.
92% votedforseeinganartisttheylike and8% votedforthe layout.Therefore inmymagazine Iwill
focuson makingsure there isa selectionof artistssoitwill fitall the readers’criteria.Iwill also
make sure the layoutis simple andeasytounderstandsoI will selectsimpleclearfontsandnot
overloadwithtoomuchtextor too manypictures.
There isquite a mixture
of responsesonthisquestion,the majorityvoteisforarticlesanda lotof people have evenvoted
for other. 8% votedforreviews,42%votedforarticles,8% votedfor news, 8% votedforpostersand
33% votedforother.Howevernoone votedforadvertisementforgigswhichcouldbe because they
findwhatgigsare available online.The peoplethatvotedforothervotedclothes,fashion,interviews
and interviewsforclothing,howeverthe onlyrelevantone isinterviewsandobviouslyfashionitems
aren’tgoingto be shownina magazine whichisbasedonmusic.Therefore Iwill include reviews,
articles,news,postersandinterviewsinmymagazine.
The majorityof people
votedforthe answer58% and 42% votedfor the answerno.eventhoughthere are people that
votednoI will still advertise new musicasthere are a lotof people thatare interestedinnew artists.
A vary of these music
magazineshave beenchosenhowevervibe hasnot therefore Iwill notlookatthatmagazine for
inspiration.NMEhasbeenvotedby9%, Kerranghas been18%,Q was 27%, top of the tops18% and
other27%. Therefore Iwill use all these magazinesforideasinmyownmagazine.
Conclusion
Thissurveyhas beenveryhelpful inmanyways asit hasgave me a ideasonwhichaspectsto focus
on mymusic magazine suchasthe genre whichwouldbe the mostpopularchoice indie.Ithasalso
shownthat the targetaudience wouldbe forpeople aged15to 24 and how the mainthingwhich
attracts someone toa magazine isseeingabandor artist youlike. Thereforebycompletingthis
musicmagazine ithas gave me a focusedideaonhow Iam goingtolay outmy magazine andmake
sure it fitsthe rightcriteriato appeal all customers.
