I will be making a video game concept, that includes promotional posters and an animated trailer.
Rationale:
Over the past 2 years I have done numerous projects, from music videos to an audience based
social media platform, there has been a lot to take away from each project, one being my FMP las t
year. I decided to do a game concept, I based my game on the idea of going around the ruins of
Pripyat (the Chernobyl exclusion zone), you would play as a woman called Irena and explore. I
created posters and a semi-animated trailer, I used a programme called EbSynth to make the
trailer and it did not turn out great. I learnt that I needed to add more elements to the programme to
get it to work. I learnt a lot from doing this project, number one being that I needed better research,
more specifically audience. I also needed a better evaluation, looking back at it - it was not good
and needed work, it had no detail, and I did not even write whole paragraph, for this FMP I will be
making sure all my work is up to par by rereading it, checking grammar, and asking my tutor for
feedback. I also have a plan for how I am going to make my audience research better, I am going
to make a survey what people want, like the name, the character design, certain elements of the
game for example character customisation, the enemy design, what each level should be and what
the other dimension should be called.
Another project that had to learn from a lot was my adventure project. I had gone into the project
excited and wanting to do well but over time I got bored, and my work suffered as a result. My idea
was following a WW1 solider coming back from war and as he travels back, he begins to have
PTSD episodes that take him back to what he experienced. In theory it worked, and it was a
promising idea, when it came down to it, I lost interest, this was down to a few factors, one of the
main ones being COVID. we were on a schedule of only being in one week and not the next. This
messed with me a bit and made me lose motivation. Time management was an issue, I did not
follow the schedule I had made, and I lost a lot of time and had to rush part of the cutscene
animation, it ended up looking awful and I can say I am embarrassed by it, it is some of my worst
work. although I am not proud of it there is a lesson to be learned and it shows me what not to do
with this final project, for example I am doing something that I really want to be good and there is a
real pressure this time, getting into university. I am also going to make sure I use my time well by
making a detailed schedule, I am going to make sure I am not being too ambitious with my work,
set times that things need to be done and set several tasks that need to be done by the end of the
day.
Project Concept:
For my FMP I am going to create a game concept with an animated trailer, my idea is a platform, 2
player game that bases around the story of a women who realises her reflection is a sentient
person trapped in the mirror, they are trapped in a shadow world (this name is in the works) that is
dark and distorted. One of you plays the normal woman and the other plays the one in the mirror.
You are progressing to find an oracle that has the capability to free your reflection/partner. You
must help each other progress between levels by putting boxes for example in front of the mirror
and then they pick it up and use it to progress. You also must fight enemies and they differ from
what side of the mirror you are on. At the end of the game, you meet the oracle, you talk with
them, and it turns out the only way to free your reflection is to defeat them.

For research I will need to look at games that follow the same principles that mine does for the
example Stardew Valley, it is a farming simulation game that also involves relationships, you move
to this town after quitting your job in an office to look after your late grandfatherâs farm. The reason
I will be researching this is because of the art style, this game is the direct inspiration for the art
style type I want to use for my game. Another game that would be good to look at is Minecraft, it is
a survival game that follows a similar art style to what I want to create, this might not be a definite
though. I will also look at platform games like the original Super Mario, Ori and Will of the Wisps,
Dead Cells, Unravel, Thomas was Alone etc. Another massive one I want to look at is Night in the
Woods, it has the same sort of atmosphere I want to create and overall, the game is quite like what
I want to achieve. Researching these games will help me draw inspiration for what my own project
could look like give me reassurance if I am ever lost for what to do, I can just look back at what
they have done and put my own twist on it.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
When it comes to evaluation I have a plan in place, I am going to be doing weekly logs to keep
track of where I am and so when I come back to work the next week, I will know what I am doing,
what needs improving and what I need to finish. Also, when I go back over it when I am done with
the project I can see if anything is missing. This will be useful as I will not have to guess what I am
doing; I will have a set of things laid out for me to do. I will also be asking for feedback from my
tutor and friends (when it comes to production) every time I come to the end of a piece of work so I
can make improvements and see what grade I am at, I believe if I know I am doing well I will keep
motivated, which is incredibly important for this project. During production I will be doing daily
reflections so like with weekly reflections so I will know what I did the past day, what needs doing
and just generally where I am in the project. I will also be able see if I have left anything to do a
later date, so I do not forget about it. I again will be asking for constant feedback from my peers
and tutor, so I know I am on track, and I have done everything to the best of my ability.
For my final evaluation I will look back at all my production logs and weekly diaries as this holds
everything, I have done over the 16 weeks so they will be an important thing to look back at. I will
ask my peers as they have seen my work progress throughout the project. I will also ask my tutor
what he think I did well and how I could have improved as he has the most knowledge on how to
judge projects. I will also assess how I did over the project and do some self-reflection like, what I
think went well and how I could have improved. I will also fully answer the questions if we are
asked to use the PowerPoint, we have used to evaluate previous projects.
Overall, this project is going impact my future career massively as it is the final steppingstone to
getting into university. I if I do well on this project then it will set me up for what is an expected at
university, which going forward into my career is important. I will be working for a company that
wants someone who can evaluate like for example, they will want me to make the right decisions
for the game and to do that I have to evaluate what would work best for the audience, what would
market best, what looks best, there is so many factors will have to look at before sending
something off, I will also must redo somethings multiple times before its right and doing this
evaluation will help set me up for that. It will help me to be ok will criticism if I experience it now.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Pre-production For the first week of pre-production, I am going to focus on
contextual research (researching people who inspire me) I will
research game developers who have created something similar
to what I want to create/ I love and am inspired by. One of the
main people I am wanting to look at is Eric Barone who made
Stardew Valley, it has the art style in going for and the have the
same 2D style I am wanting to create. I am planning also to
look at people like Todd Howard, the creator of Fallout and
Skyrim, as he is one of my favourite developers and he in
general inspires me. I plan to research 5 people as I think that is
a good amount of people to get the information I need, I will
look at who they are, what they have achieved and just general
information about them.
2 Pre-production The second week of pre-production will be focused on
finishing the research I did not complete in the first week if I
have any.After I am going to start my contextual statement in
which I will talk in more detail about my concept and what it is
about,what I want to achieve with it and how I want it to be
seen.I will also talk about my strengths and weaknesses and
how they will effect/improve my project, why I am doing the
concept I have created and what I have been inspired by in the
past and how I am going to include that in my work. I also want

to talk about some of the reasons behind why I have chosen
certain things for example, I made the main character female to
combat the overwhelming number of male characters in games
and how I am going to make her as far from the male gaze view
as I can as it is an important thing to talk about.
3 Pre-production For the 3rd week of pre-production, I will start looking into
existing products,in my case I will be focusing on videogames
that are somewhat close to my own idea. In the bibliography I
wrote down some games I look at as a starting point, I probably
won't look at all of them as there is around 12, I will narrow
down what is closer to what I want to create and research those.
I have a few that I am set on researching, Night in the Woods,
Thomas Was Alone, Stardew Valley, Terraria and Unravel. All
these games have the elements that I want to include from the
2-player mode to the art style. It is important that the games I
research have these qualities as I want to get a betteridea of
what I can with own project. Also, this week I will do audience
research, my plan is leaving a lot to the audience, and it will
also tell me if I need to make certain things like a character
customisation. I am going to make a survey that will include
what the name of the game should be, what the character will
look like, what the maps will look, the enemies etc. In the past I
have not paid enough attention to what the audience wants but
after doing the previous project I realise how important is it and
I want to include the audience as much as possible.
4 Pre-production For the first week of experiments, I am going to look at few
things,for the first week, animation as that is what I think
needs most work. I will be doing a few human animations like
a walk cycle, a run cycle, sitting down, jumping, interacting
with objects, interacting with the otherplayer, and fighting. I
will also look at how the enemies will move and fight as that is
an important part of the game, I also want to look at how
collectables will move, I am still undecided if I want them to be
animated so I will decide when the time comes to creating
them. I will be doing all of this on my iPad using the app
Procreate. I will also use references from YouTube videos / the
internet to create my experiments as I am not confident with all
the animations I have listed.
5 Pre-production The second week of experiments I will finishing what I started
last week, it will be inevitable that I must do work from last
week as I have given myself a lot of to do with not a lot of time
to do it. I do not have an exact list of what animations I will do
when I think I will just reference this and go through the list I
have made here. I also want to do art experiments, like the
backgrounds to each of the levels, I am not that experienced
with background art, so I want to try it out first before diving in
the deep end with it. I also feel like I will need to do a bit of
character art so I can get an idea of what the characters are
going to look like.
6 Pre-production Planning my project is going to take a bit if time so I am going
to start with planning the trailer. I am going to make a rough
draft of a story board and then bit by bit advance it into more
detail, I am going to make several drafts, so I know I have the
idea down solidly and I am sure of what I am doing. I am going
to make the trailer to show off the main parts of the trailer like
combat, the basics of the story and the gameplay. I am going to
make it seem like footage from the game, I think this will be
most effective as it shows what the game is like and how it is
played which as a gamer is important to me, a lot of games are
misleading with their cover art, its usually not in the style of the

game and looks nothing what the game is.
7 Pre-production In this week I will be focused on what the posters will look
like, I am going to make rough draft of each of them on
procreate and then refine them ready to be made during the
production weeks. I am going to ask for feedback on each of
them so I know I am making good decisions that will lead my
project to be successful.I am also going to refer to my research
and look at what other games have done posterwise, I want to
make mine as marketable as the games I am looking at. At the
end of doing this I will pick the best posterand use photoshop
to add things that usually appear of covers of games / make it
the cover art.
8 Production For the first week of production in going to be focusing on the
starting the trailer, it is the focal point of the project and I want
to make it look as good as it can, I will be referring to
experiments and storyboard so I can get it as close as possible
to what I want. I will start with the first 2 scenes.In these
scenes I will be animating the character running along the
platforms along with the other player and the second scene will
be helping them get to anothersection of the level using the
mirrors as I said in the concept.I am aiming to make the
overall trailer around 1 minute 30 seconds,it might be longer it
depends on how the scenes come out. I am aiming for each clip
to be around 7 seconds each as I think that is a good amount of
time to showoff each aspect of the game. I will do this on my
iPad using Procreate.
9 Production The second week I am aiming to get another2 scenes done,the
fighting scene and the beating a boss and unlocking the next
area scene.I will do this by referring to my storyboard a lot and
looking back to the experiments so I can get the movements
right. I am a bit anxious about the fighting animation as it is not
something I have done before; I am hoping by doing
experiments it will help me to be more confident with it. This
will also be done on my iPad using Procreate. This should take
up to 3 days to do if I stay on task.
10 Production The 3rd week of production I will be aiming to be halfway
through the trailer. This week I will be doing the boss battle
scene.This will be difficult as I am not confident with my
fighting animating skills but at that point, I will have done
experiments and a previous fighting scene so I will be well
versed in that style of animating, it also will not be that difficult
as I want to keep the game simple so it will be a non-
complicated looking fighting action. Aside from that I also
want to do scene showing what will happening on the other
side of the mirror, I am going to show the othercharacter
fighting her own enemies to show the multiplayer aspect of it.
11 Production The 4th week of production I will hopefully be deep into the
work, I want to have made 6 scenes with 2-4 more to go. I am
still undecided at this point on what I will be doing exactly in
the trailer I just know I want to showoff what the game will
look like and the potential gameplay. Animation wise I will be
doing a scene involving the character trapped in the mirror, I
want to showoff what their world will look like by making a
scene of them running, this will most likely be after the scene
showing the other character. I will also do a scene showing the
character picking up collectables to show that the game is not
just a run and gun and to show that there is a story.
12 Production The second to last week will be spent doing the final scene for
the trailer. I want to showthe characters interacting, there will

be a conversation about their situation so people can understand
more of the story/what is going on. The final thing I need to do
is the 3 posters.I will spend the first week doing the first one
which will be the art I use for the box; I will make a back for it,
it will showthe two characters holding their hands to the mirror
and sitting. I also need to write a description for the game for
the back, it will include the basic premise of the story and talk a
bit about how there's collectables. It will also talk about the
combat and the way you progress through each of the levels.
13 Production The last week of production will involve me doing the 2 final
posters.They will be based on the designs I settled on during
the planning phase.I will be doing this on my iPad again using
Procreate. I will also be using the final week to put togetherthe
animation in Premiere Pro. I will be adding text over certain
points of the trailer to point out what each thing is like on the
part where is shows the two characters it will say,
âMultiplayer!â I will also be adding the final things to it, asking
for feedback, and acting on it. I want to make sure my project is
amazing and will get the result I want.
14 Evaluation I will spend this week asking my classmates, peers,and tutor
for feedback to include on my evaluation, I may also do a
survey so I can have all my feedback in one place. I will fill out
the PowerPoint use for previous project as I find it useful to
have a guide.
15 Evaluation I will continue what I had started last week, I will do self-
reflection, what went well, what did not.Ill also compile all my
work onto one PowerPoint to prepare for my presentation the
next week.
16 Evaluation This week we will be doing presentations,I will also be
finishing off any work that needs doing, for example any
production that needs finishing, any last-minute research or
feedback that I need to adjust.
