Tom Batty outlines initial plans and ideas for a 2D game project. He considers remaking a previous 2D Mario-style game but wants to try something new. He has an idea for a puzzle game where the player helps a character complete puzzles to progress through levels. Tom feels he is skilled at art and design. He has flexibility in his game idea while meeting the project requirements of a 2D game for his target age group. Tom creates mood boards, mind maps and begins researching existing puzzle games to inform his project planning and design experiments. He plans to create surveys to gather audience feedback and will evaluate his work upon completion.
2. Initial Reaction
• My first initial thoughts of what I could possibly make was to stick to what I
have previously designed before. What I had designed before was a 2D Mario
style game but obviously changed up the characters. But I don’t want to just go
for a safe option and just do what I had done before so I was thinking of sill
keeping the 2D style because that’s one of the requirements of the brief. When
thinking of doing something a little more different and possibly harder to
design, I thought of taking the idea of a puzzle game and having a character try
and figure how to complete the puzzle to proceed to the next level. What I
would say I'm good at is more of the art and design of how the game would
look, which includes the character or characters and the levels. For me the
design is one of the most important sides of producing as successful. My
options I would say are very good because as long as I keep within my age
group and make sure the game is 2D I can really chose whatever I would like to
make which opens up multiple door ways and ideas. I feel over all the brief is
good and doesn't seem to be hard at all.
6. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated
colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
I feel that there is a lot of repetition in the colours and tone of each image. What I
have found when playing and researching the games, that a lot of the new puzzle
stile games have a dark and demonic feel to them and each game has a strong use
in dark colours. Also they tend to keep to the same style and layout to each of their
levels.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• Mood boards for me are always useful because they help me take some of their
ideas and help me add to my ideas which for me always gives me some good
ideas to piece together my final designs. Also if I'm struggling to expand on
some certain designs or ideas then they do give me just that little bit extra to
help me proceed.
7. Schedule
WEEK OVERALL PLAN SPECIFIC TASKS
1 Case Study, Initial
Response, Product
Research
Create mood boards and mind maps.
Research existing products linking to
my game idea to help me progress.
2 Audience Research,
Production Experiments,
Proposal, Planning
For this I will create a survey to get
some very good feedback from the
public.
Begin to experiment on my designs and
how I could get my character to work in
my game.
Begin planning for the next couple of
weeks of what I will do first and how I
will finish my final product.
3 Production for whatever I have planned begin to
create my final product.
4 Production for this week I should be coming
towards the end of my final product
and then once done begin to use the
product and see if everything works
perfectly.
5 Evaluation For this final week of the rotation I will
break down my work and evaluate it all
and see where I can improve for the
next time.
