Tell me in no more than20 words, what is your
FMP idea?
A game set in the medieval era with monstersand
it will havecertain fantasy elements included.
Why have youdecided to makeit? I really enjoy tryingto create designsfor fantasy
because it can be a wide variety of different
designs, plusalso it can pushme in certain ways I
wouldn’tusually expect such as in the game series
God of War where it used to be set with a Greek
mythology backgroundnowithasa Norse
mythology backgroundsoitcould effectively take
me anywhere. Whenit comesdown to skillsthat I
like touse it all comes downto drawing and using
contrasteverywhere I possibly could, something
thatI always wanted to try out would be to adda
story andsome backgroundtothe designs that I
create. The storiesI would like tocreate would
either be a revenge story or a redemptionstory.
With this I wouldlike to work in video games in
either indie gamesor triple A gamesdevelopment
thatis why after this course I amgoing to study in
a video gamesdesign course in University. Video
games havebeen a massive influence and instead
of just telling a story it is a special medium that
allows youto be a partof the story andin some
cases allows youto change the story.
What aboutyourproject makesit importantto
you?
The mostimportantidea behind my projects
either are that they are aboutdesensitisation
towardsviolence which is not really importantto
me because it has already happenedtoomuch
andyou can’treally turnback time for the
populaceto be reverted back to sensitiveto
violence but within my story I would explore this
by lookingat war mostlikely and the way to
research that is to read abouthistoric wars and
battles or it could be to dowith mentalhealth
which is importanttome because I knowa lot of
people with mental illnesses and it is just
importanttolet people knowaboutit anddiscuss
it. I would explore this within my project by going
into somesort of insanity case maybe see through
the insane personseyesor see what’sinside of
their head when it comes down toresearch all I
could really do is research insanity and other
mental illnesses andwhat they could potentially
do toyou.
Outline someof the initial influences onyour
idea/work and somepotential research targets
(remember, research isn’t justa paperbased
activity)
The Witcher book andgame series.
For thisI will be researching mainly from the
games howeverfrom the booksI would like to
research the story as it goesinto a lot of detail
where there is very little detail youcould pick out
thatwas useful butsomehowthey makea decent
balance and for the games I wouldlike to research
the character design because they gone througha
lot of revampsbefore andit wouldbe interesting
to see the process they went throughtodesign
the new and improvedcharacters also justin
general I will probably doan analysisof just how it
looksandwhy it worksso well.
DOOM
For thisgame I would like toresearch the concept
art of the game to be more specific I would like to
look at boththe demonic designsand the
backgroundsbecauseI believe that is of course
where they put the mostwork in the gamesand
yet again I believe I might doan analysis of why it
worksand also how it looksandwhat kind of
mood it creates.
God of War
For thisgame I will be researching the production
methodsandthe story because this is game that
has changedmassively from predecessorsin the
story mainly but also when it comes downto the
productionmethodsitis interesting because
throughoutthewhole game they only havethree
cuts andthat meansabout30 hoursof gameplay
only stopsslightly three times.
Assassin’sCreed game andbook series
For thisgame I will research the story and
character design. I will be researching the story
because a majority of them are set in the time
period, which I wantto set my game, and just in
general I would like toknow how toget
everythingpossibleout of a character like they do
in assassin’screed Ezio edition. As for the
research into the character design as I have
always foundthe hoodierobe quite a cool design
andit also obscurespeople from seeing yourface
from far away andjust in general thatis quite a
cool technique.
Skyrim
For thisgame I will be researching the concept art
andthe general design of the game. To research
the concept art I will be doing the exact same as
the general designdoingan over all analysisof
design andart within the game.
The main typeof research that I will be usingwill
be first handfrom playingand readingthe books
andthe games but I will alsobe doinga little bit
secondhandresearch where I will look at screen
shotsof the game and analysethem.
What effect do youwant to haveon your
audience when they see yourproject?
I want them either to feel shock or feel happy as
either way youcan enjoy the experience unlessit
is quite a visceral shock. I will make them feel both
emotionsat the same time by using either
frequent plot twistsin botha positiveand
negative direction because a goodgame will take
youon journey with bothups anddowns, soit
won’tjust be just the two emotionsotherwise the
story would fail almostimmediately toshow case
a story.
Describe the tone/mood/styleofyourproject
[which productiontechniques/characteristicsare
youemploying?]
The tone I will use is going to be very dark as the
story is going to be basedarounda vengeance
story, sothere will be a hint of compassionin
there as well tolevel it all out. It will be dark also
because it would be appropriatefor the time
period the game will be set in which is the
medieval era. The style will be medievaland as for
the art style it will be realistic butstill use a
pixelated art styleand as for the style of writing it
will be fast paced when it comes downto the
story, asit is a vengeance story. Whenit comes
downto the productiontechniquesI will use, I will
draw like I usually dobut thenI will ad contrastin
almostevery way I can whilst still makingit look
fairly realistic andI mightalso use a lot of shading
however I will be using dark coloursto for some
areas of the game and I will then probably haveto
addsome different colouringsto the badguysas
they will be wearing a lot of dark coloured armour
andit would justblend in too well with the
backgroundtosee the designs clearly enough.
When it comes downto the characters I plan to
addcertain aesthetics to themto then give me
somethingtotalk aboutand form a deeper
understandingofwho they are and their story
throughvisualaesthetics as well as story telling.
Why have youdecided to makeyour project in
this style?
To make it easy todetect who is who with in the
story andalso just to makeeverythingmean
somethingsuchas colour it could be different
colour teamslike in Splatoon, Call of Duty, Crash
Team Racing Nitro Fuelled and team fortress 2, or
have angularcharacters be bad characters and
smoothcharactersbe goodcharacters. I will
explore thisfurther by maybereverting the roles
thathave already been set outand turningthe
idea on its head andsomehowmake the badguys
seem as if they are the goodones butbeyondthat
I haveno real idea what I could possibly doto
change this becauseit hasbeen aroundfor so
long thatpeople have just startedto take it for
grantedhowever more and more frequently
designers anddevelopersare breakingaway from
this traditionandare doingwhat lots of other
games donow which is tojust make everyone
look the same or similar so youhave noreal clue
who is againstyou andwho is with you.
