2. ADDIE Model
This model is the first of its kind
and hence is referred to as the
classic model for all other models
use it as a base to design their own.
3. Dick and Carey Model
This model is also referred to as
The Systems Approach Model.
4. What is similar between the two
models?
Uses a Systematic approach
ADDIE and Dick and Carey Models complete all phases none is skipped or
exempted.
Analysis is the first phase
Evaluation takes place
5. Distinguishing between the Two:
ADDIE
• Consists of 5 phases
• Use mainly in business and
organizational environments
• Must succeed with excellence in one
phase before moving to the next
• More Linear model
Dick & Carey
• Consists of 10 detailed phases
• Used in curriculum development in
schools
• Behaviourist approach
• More Agile model
6. ADVANTAGES
ADDIE
• Widely used in business and
education
• Uses a sequential order that is clear
and structured
Dick and Carey
• Uses a systematic process with
measurable and straightforward
objectives
• Evaluation and revision can take
place throughout
7. CHALLENGES
ADDIE
• Uses a linear approach which
doesn’t make it as flexible
• Strict approach that takes a lot of
time and can be very expensive
• Has to be completed with no
mistakes before you can move from
one phase to the next
Dick and Carey
• Too many phases which can take
up a lot of time
• Each phase is of importance and
must be completed

• Both ADDIE and Dick and Carey are widely used Instructional Design
Models
• Depending on the task at hand one can determine which works best for each
as its pros and cons
