CASE QUESTION :
• Summarize the case briefly.
• what factors made IBM successful?
• "The selection was based not on personal liking but on
competence ".Explain the statement in the light of principles
of management.
• "Another step in creating a certain corporate culture was to
establish an open-door policy ".Explain the statement in the
context of management
style(i.e.Centralization/Decentralization).
• Do you consider job cutting to be a wise decision, initiated
by IBM?Recommend ways on how IBM could tackle the
situation of cutting more than 10,000 jobs.
The case is all about good management skill in
terms of vision,service quality,requitment &
managing employees.Watson Jr. put special
consideration on values such as make
customers satisfied,go out of one's way to do
the right thing.
Summarize The Case Briefly
He felt the need for training to implement those
values but in those days the idea of training was not
very efficient. His idea of "Open -door" policy was
just the thing to eliminate problem of
management.But changing market situation forced
them restructure & cut 10,000 jobs.
•Vision
•Recruitment policy
•Managing employees
•Values
•Establishing unique corporate culture called
""Open-door".
What Factors Made IBM successful?
The factors that made IBM successful :
The statement is valid evidence of strong
preference for sound recruitment policy of
IBM top management. Recruitment is a very
important process for the company &it needs
to be efficient.
"The selection was based not on personal
liking but on competence ".Explain the
statement in the light of principles of
management.
That was recognized by Watson Jr. the implict
principles of the company also supports the
idea that IBM top management was respectful
individual's & open to recruit the competent
individual.
Now I explain the statement in the light of
principles of management.The selection
process followed some of management
rules.These are:
The statement is related to management style or
orientation.the establishment of this corporate
culture indicates centralization style of management
in IBM.As mentioned in the case, Watson Jr. Spent
significant amount of time to discuss with individual
who want to share & discuss with higher level
managers. He wanted to eliminate isolation of
top-management.
"Another step in creating a certain corporate
culture was to establish an open-door
policy".Explain the statement in the context
of management style(i.e. Centralization/
Decentralization)
Do you consider job cutting to be a wise
decision, initiated by IBM? Recommend ways
on how IBM could tackle the situation of
cutting more than 10,000 jobs.
Due to changing business environment & marketing
situation a company can required less manpower
than it has.At this state it is necessary for the
company to cut some job or else it will lose
profit. From this prospective it looks like IBM could do
better by tackling the situation in some possible
ways.
Tackle job cutting situation:
•Giving time to find another job
•Extra payment
•Adapting
•Selection.
