3. Lionsgate
• They had a reputation for low budget horror
movies. One example being “Saw”.
• They decided to merge with Artisan
Entertainment to strengthen their finances in
2003
More notably in 2012 they took over Summit
Entertainment an independent studio worth
about $413 m. This had the key benefit of
bringing with it Twilight
4. Taking a chance
• The other studios all turned down the “Hunger
Games” however Lionsgate took the chance and
has created one of the most popular film
franchises in history.
• In 2013 Lionsgate overtook Paramount and Fox in
revenue taken.
• Other than the major six Lionsgates is the only
studio to have grossed more than $1 billion (it did
this in 2012 &2013 – remember it was a tough
financial climate in these years)
5. Techniques used
• How did this relatively new company only
around 19 years old challenge the big six?
• Clever merger and acquisition
• Seeing potential where other studios missed
opportunities
• Had the support of the television element e.g
Mad Men to raise the profile
• Took risks in a challenging economic climate
