Insidious V Dark Shadows
Question 1
• What are the main institutions used for the film?
Insidious
Insidious Dark Shadows
• Insidious is made by a low budge unknown brand
Film District whilst, Dark Shadows is made by the
renowned High budget film makers Warner
Brothers Pictures
Question 2
• How much money was used to produce these
films (the budget)?
• Insidious Budget: $1.5milllion
• Dark Shadows Budget: $150million
Question 3
• How much money was made from each of
these films?
• Insidious box office: $97,000,000
• Dark Shadows box office: $245,500,000
Question 4
• How well known are the production
companies for both the high-budget and low-
budget film?
• Film District was not known before they made
their successful film Insidious which got them
known in the film business.
• Warner Brothers is one of the big six and is
known globally and made successful films like
Harry Potter.
Question 5
• List the differences between the high-budget
film and the low-budget film in terms of the
institutions.
• The institution of Warner Brothers spend a lot
of their high budget on special effects, cast
and directors.
• The institution of Film district spend a lot
more of their money of promotion and trailers
because they’re less known.
Question 6
• List any similarities that exist between the
high-budget film and the low-budget film in
terms of the institutions?
• The similarities between these high budget
and low budget film institutions is that they
spend the majority of their money on the
production of the film.
Question 7
• What other films has the production company
made? Were these as successful? Why/why
not?
Low budget
• The most of the Film Districts films were made
after Insidious (2010) because this was their
big break into the movie business. But they
made films like Looper that was very
successful having a budget of $30million but
having a box office of $176,000,000. The
reason it was successful because it had a
unique storyline that come across in the
trailer.
High Budget
• Warner Brothers have been a distinguished
movie company for many years and have
made one of the most successful Franchises of
all time Harry Potter. This film had a budget
over the 8 films of 1 billion and had box office
earnings of 7 billion. Why this was successful I
think is because it took people to a magical
place which had never been done before also
it established itself well over the first few films
so people wanted to come back.
Question 8
• What genre of films does the company usually
produce? Is this important when considering who
could produce your film? Why?
• The genre of film Film District usually produces is
normally action based like Olympus Has Fallen
and Looper.
• Warner Brothers produce a variety of different
genre films but mostly Action, Horror and
Comedy with films like Dark night, The Orphan
and The Hangover all of which has been
successful in some way.
Question 9
• What audiences do each of the institutions aim to
appeal to? Is this reflected through their film
choice, or does this vary?
• These films both aim to appeal to a male or
teenage audience as Film District produces films
in the genre of sci-fi and action like Evil dead and
Looper. Whilst Warner Brothers spend most of
their money on action films as there most
expensive films are action like Superman and
Inception. These type of films generally would
appeal to males or teenagers.
Question 10
• Which institution do you feel outperforms the
other and could claim to be more successful,
considering your research? Explain your reasons?
• Obviously Warner Brothers have been an
established power house since the 1970’s and
continue to produce successful films. But
considering Film District is not nearly as
established as Warner Brothers it had a sharp
incline to a well respected film company with a
series of successful films like Looper, Insidious
and Olympus has Fallen.
