2. Market Position & Competitors
• Celador Films are in competitions with ticket and DVD sales. But the DVD sales
would come later on after the films release.
• Celador still have more competitors like DNA and Film 4.
• When DNA released ’28 Days Later’ in 2002 they only had a budget of 5
million, but however managed to make a global profit of around 82 million.
• Sony Produced Spiderman 2 their budget was £200 million and their box office
was £238 million which is understandable as they are a bigger company than
Celador.
• The descent cost £3.5 million to make and they earned $57, 051,053.
• Working Title productions made a film called Shaun of the dead (2004) and
their budget was $6.1 million and their box office revenue was $30 million.
• Celador is very successful as that it is a independent company which does not
share its profit with other big companies usually making temporary companies
just for that production.
• They are more successful than Film 4 but not more than Sony.
3. OWNERSHIP
Celador was originally taken over by Complete
Communications, which bought out shareholders
including Paul Smith CBE and Jasper Carrott. Under
the ownership of Complete, Celador expanded its
fledgling radio, film and international businesses.
Later, Complete Communications announced its
intention to sell the company. Formed in 1983.
Disney were sued for airing a film by Celador in
America without having the rights and had to pay
£170 million in compensation to Celador.
They have now become their own company as they
have bought their selves out.
4. Operating Model
• Celador don’t use full contractors they use freelance
productions crew to produce the film.
• Co funding a project might be also an option, usually loads
of smaller companies get together to make a film and put
together their funds.
• Celador is the only company that makes films on a project
by project basis.
• Celador would use project capitalisation as funds were
hard to come by this would be determined on whether
your asset base increases or your profits decrease.
• Celador would have product placement in their films in
order to generate more money to spend on the film, for
example range rover paid to have their car used in the film
and so did Coors beer for their drink.
5. Products
• Dirty Pretty Things (2002)
• Separate Lies (2005)
• The Descent (2006)
• Slumdog Millionaire (2009)
• The Descent Part 2 (2009)
• The Scouting Book for Boys (2010)
• The Simpsons (FOX)
• Who Wants To Be A Millionaire
• They also make radio Channels and do Theatre productions.
• American companies like to spend more money on the production,
but as a result they always make a profit on their film, however not
in the case of films like John Carter.
