• Box Office Figures – The amount of money a film makes
• Ratings – How someone has rated something
• Sales – The amount of products sold
3. PRIMARY RESEARCH
• Definition – Primary research is research that you
carry out yourself
• Advantages – You can do your own research which
means you do not have to rely or be dependent on
others
• Disadvantages – It can be difficult to find people who
can answer the questions you have prepared
• Example – Examples of forms of primary research are
interviews, surveys/questionnaires and Vox Pops
4. SECONDARY RESEARCH
• Definition - Looking at and using research and
results that have been collected in the past
• Advantages - The research has already been
done which means all you have to do is read it
and apply it to whatever it is you need it for
• Disadvantages – The results may not be easy to
find and also you have to rely on how well others
have researched
• Example – Internet research and Library research
5. QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
• Definition - Research that can be quantified
and then be put into percentages, numbers
and fractions.
• Advantages – An advantage of quantitive
research is that the results show the answers
and pattern of lots of people
• Disadvantages – The results are not in detail
and are often yea or no answers
• Example – Surveys/ questionaires
6. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
• Definition – In depth data, finds out opinions,
beliefs and reasoning.
• Advantages – Answers and results are in more
detail meaning the feedback is more us
• Disadvantages - Less people are asked questions
and involved with the research, the quality of the
results depends on the skills of the researcher
and if they are doing the research properly
• Example – Focus groups and Vox pops
7. AUDIENCE RESEARCH
• Definition – This is the research of people who view a particular TV
show, movie or anything else
• Advantages – You can get to know your audience and what they want
or desire out of a certain product.
• Disadvantages – Every one has different opinions and expectations so it
is impossible to please everybody
• Example – An example of audience research is surveys and
questionnaires
8. MARKET RESEARCH
• Definition – Gathering information about consumer
needs and also their preferences
• Advantages – Doing this means you have knowledge
about a specific market before releasing anything so
they can ensure the product or service caters to a
customer needs and preferences
• Disadvantages – If they do not do enough research
or if its wrong then a company may make a product
which flops due to it not catering to a customers
needs
• Example – An example of a form of market research
is interviewing past and present customers
9. PRODUCTION RESEARCH
• Definition – This is the research of characteristics of a
product and it also helps businesses understand what it is
the customer really wants as well
• Advantages – An advantage of product research is that it
allows you to gain all the information about the
production of a product and also allows you to see what
the customer wants in the product itself
• Disadvantages – A disadvantage of product research is
that sometimes the results may be unreliable which could
mean the results may not be right
• Example – An example of this might be a survey sent to
customers or interviews with the customers.
10. TERMINOLOGY
• Objective – An aim or goal someone may set for them selves or
others to work toward and achieve
• Subjective – This is where someone's opinion may differ from
others due to personal preference and opinion
• Valid – If something is valid then it is legally or officially correct and
can be referred to or used if needed
• Reliable – If something is reliable then it means that you can rely on
it to perform well and consistently or it can be trusted with giving
out the correct information
