• Circulation is the amount of copies of a printed product that have been
distributed
• Hits
• Hits is the amount of views on a certain webpage
• Box Office Figures
• A box office figure is the amount of money a film has made in the cinema
• Ratings
• A rating is a numerical value that shows viewers how they like the film.
• Sales
• Sales are how many products have been sold

3. Primary Research
• Definition
– Primary research is the research you do yourself
• Advantages
– An advantage of primary research is that it can be easier to find more
reliable sources in comparison to secondary research
– Another advantage of primary research is that you can access your
questionnaire or survey data straight away.
• Disadvantages
– One disadvantage could be not getting information from a reliable
source.
– Another disadvantage could be that this method is time consuming
• Example
– Some examples of doing primary research are questionnaires, surveys,
interviews and product analysis

4. Secondary Research
• Definition
– Secondary research is research that has been conducted by someone
else.
• Advantages
– One advantage is that the research has already been done for you
– Another advantage is that there is a large variety of sources avaliable
• Disadvantages
– One disadvantage is the research may not be what your looking for.
– Another disadvantage is some research may be hard to find

– Internet research

– Archive research

5. Quantitative Research
• Definition
– Quantitative research is research that could be measured and put into a
numerical value
• Advantages
– An advantage of quantitative research is that it can be easier to interpret
over qualitative data.
– Another advantage of quantitative research is that its easy to distribute
surveys to people as you can do it online
• Disadvantages
– A disadvantage could be that it is time consuming to create a survey with
20 questions in.

– An example of quantitative research is a survey consisting of closed
questions (yes or no) as that collect quantitative data

6. Qualitative Research
• Definition
• Qualitative research is in depth opinions and beliefs
• Advantages
• An advantage of qualitative research is that you get a more in depth
answer to questions which helps to get the best answer for a question
• Another advantage of qualitative research is that if you get data from your
target audience you should get the correct research to help.
• Disadvantages
• An disadvantage of qualitative research is that it is harder to interpret the
data as they are opinions
• Another disadvantage of qualitative research is that it is time consuming
to create the questionnaires

• Some examples of qualitative research are reviews, responses ,discussions
and forums

7. Audience Research
• Definition
• Audience research is researching about the target consumer for a
product
• Advantages
• An advantage of audience research is that you can find the target
audience for the product your trying to sell
• Disadvantages
• A disadvantage of audience research is that the questionnaires can
seem time consuming so people fake answers to finish it quicker
• Example
• An example of audience research could be sending out
questionnaires about a product to see what consumers feel about it

• Definition
• Market research is finding out where a product can be sold in
the market
• Advantages
• An advantage of market research is that you can see the
competition in the market
• Disadvantages
• An disadvantage of market research is that some people skip
question or fake answers in a questionnaire as its seen as time
consuming
• Example
• An example of market research is researching competitors
online so you can see if your business will fit in the market

9. Production Research
• Definition
• Production research is finding the correct info and resources
to create media work
• Advantages
• An advantage of production research is that it helps you find
out what you need to carry out and complete the project
• Disadvantages
• An disadvantage of production research could be that the idea
for the piece of media may not be possible to do with the
software that is provided.

• An example of production research is using the internet to
find the correct tools to create the piece of media

10. Terminology
• Objective
– Objective means the research that hasn’t been influenced
by feelings or opinions
• Subjective
– Subjective means the research that has been influenced by
feelings or opinions
• Valid
– Valid means if the research is able to answer the intended
outcome/ question
• Reliable
• Reliable means the research creates accurate and
correct results
