The document summarizes the poster campaign being created to promote a psychological horror film called "Phobia." Three types of posters will be made - a 30x40 inch landscape quad poster, and two 27x40 inch portrait posters. The teaser poster will show a boy curled up alone in a dark room with hands reaching towards him. The quad poster will show the boy surrounded by glowing lights depicting different phobias while a dark figure looms in the background. The theatrical poster will show the boy suspended by webs that turn into ropes, with parts of his body disintegrating. Common horror film poster conventions like using dark backgrounds and highlighting emotions will be followed to attract audiences.

My Poster proposal PASS DONE.docx
1. Poster proposal pass
The title of my film is “Phobia” and that will be presented boldly on every poster that I make. I will
make 3 types of posters which include a landscape quad crown poster with a size of 30 inches x 40
inches, and two portrait one sheet posters with a size of 27 inches x 40 inches, one being a teaser
poster and the other being a theatrical poster. The purpose of my posters is to promote the film and
get more people to watch and share it so it can be more successful and make more money.
I will create a poster campaign as promotional material for a psychological horror film as a part of
my advertising plan for the film ‘Phobia’. The film is about a young boy called Oliver who at night
gets visited by some monsters who want to get to know him better. The story is about a kid called
Oliver Brown who fears every common fear (darkness, monster behind curtains, heights, being lost)
however in this script the monsters are a reality. The story follows Oliver who lives in an upper
middle class English house with his parents Joshua Brown and Amanda Brown. One night, Oliver is
awoken by the sound of movement in his room and slowly starts to meet all the monsters Nycto,
Arachno, Acro, Verze and more (the name of each monster is based on the phobias name). Initially
he is scared but as the night goes on, they start to warm up to him, however as soon as the sun rises
the monsters start disappearing and Oliver wakes up as if it was just a dream. This continues night
after night but as the nights go on the monsters start revealing their true colours, revealing that they
were only trying to gain Oliver’s trust, whilst this goes on the real world starts becoming effected of
whatever the monsters do. Normal life continues during the day though, but we see his relationships
and mentalities breakdown due to the trauma of these monsters. Everyone around him become
increasingly concerned as Oliver’s parents decide to take him to a therapist but that doesn’t seem to
help as no one can believe what Oliver is saying. At the end of the story the fear monsters eventually
lead Oliver into the grave. The plot elements that I will include into the poster are the genre of the
film (that being a phycological horror), the main protagonist (the boy), and the antagonist (the
phobias Nycto, Arachno, Verze, Athazagora, and Acro). I will show the genre of a psychological
horror in my posters by the unexplained madness of having someone being attacked by an unnatural
threat. I will refrain from including too many plot elements other than the characters and settings as
to not give away too much to the audience. The main setting my posters will have will either be a
dark room or the bedroom of Oliver.
On my teaser poster I will have a wide shot of the young boy who is crawled into a ball with his
knees up to his head and his head peering over his knees. There will be a wall right behind him but
and a bedside table with a nightlight to his right of him. There will also be a bed to further drive the
point that the setting is in a bedroom. There will also be toys and books around him but only in the
place visible to the little light in the room. The only light given in the room will come from the
nightlight positioned next to the boy. The angle of the shot will be at a slight high angle. A spotlight
will be on his position with all the area around him in darkness. Peering from the darkness there will
be arms and hands reaching towards the child in the centre. The entire poster will be black and
white with no colour. The title of the film will be positioned above the picture in the dark
background in big red writing. At the bottom of the poster, underneath the image it will have the
tagline “Everyone is afraid of something”. Underneath that it will have the release date and besides
that it will have the studios involved in the making of the film.
On my quad poster, it will be wide shot at a slightly high angle looking down onto the main
protagonist who is in the centre of the poster. He will be standing on a glowing circle and facing
2. towards the camera. Sprouting out around him will be 4 rows of lights beaming away from the
centre circle with anything not in the light in complete darkness. The visible parts of the poster will
illuminate what looks to be a bedroom. In each row of beaming lights there is a different fear that
clearly represents who they are. In one row of light will be a massive spider hairy, another will be a
person shattered into many pieces being linked together by green and purple luminescent
rectangles, another will be a patchy humanoid slowly being ripped apart and fading away, the last on
the spotlights would be a tall yet hunched over humanoid with elongated body parts. In the
background within the darkness of the poster will be a tall figure in all black clothing wearing a large
black hat with a large brim. They will be looking shot at a low angle as they tower over the boy. The
title of the film will be red and be positioned below the image with the release date and billing block
below.
On my portrait theatrical poster, it will long shot at eye level. The protagonist will be facing the
camera and be suspended mid air with spider webs keeping him in the air. His hands will be up to his
face with half of his face and his hand being glitched out of place. Other parts of his body will also be
evaporating and disintegrating. He will be inside a bedroom with light beaming from behind the
curtains creating a prison bar effect. The webs that are keeping him in place will as they ascend the
poster will slowly turn into rope. The entire background behind them will be a bedroom. I will have
the title in red above the image with the tagline “Everyone is afraid of something” below the image
with the release date and billing block below that.
The font I will use for the billing block in my poster is “Universal Accreditation” from Dafont. I will
use another font from Dafont which is called “Help Me” for the title of the film. The font I will use for
my tagline and release date will be a font called “Caslon”.
The main characters are Nycto and Oliver and who are my female and male leads. Oliver will appeal
to the male teenage to young adult side of the audience as he is 11 and Nycto will appeal towards
the female adults in their late 20s early 30s more because although Nycto doesn’t have an age, they
will act a lot like someone in their 30s. The genre will attract an audience that likes horror films as
that is the genre that I have gone for. People of all social status can enjoy my film as it follows the
life of a kid going through school life and won’t have to deal with social status at his age.
Distribution is the method in which media products are delivered to audiences, including the
marketing campaign. Posters are not a new form of distribution and is very established in media,
posters have been around since the 19th
century. A poster is a great from of distribution as it not
only promotes the film but can be provide revenue towards the company who released them if they
decide to sell it. My posters will do the same as they will get displayed for everyone to see, building a
big fanbase for the film whilst also selling it which not only makes us money but also causes them to
be promoted further as they will be found not only in public but at people’s homes as well. Having
posters can also capture the eye of the audience its targeted towards and possibly a new crowd of
people whilst also containing all the key information they would need to know for the movie. My
poster will connect with a larger crowd and target specific fans because of the actors in my posters.
The actors I have in my film will add new crowds towards my film, making more people talk about it
and it reach an even larger audience. To add on to this, a good poster can stick in the consumer’s
mind. A poster would have the directors, studio and actors names on it to properly sell the film to
people who are interested in those specific people/companies. If you have lovable and or well-
respected people or companies involved in your film, then more people would be inclined to see it.
The reason I and so many other companies use poster campaign is to constantly feed the consumers,
build hype, and giving them all the information, they need without spoiling to much of the film.
Distribution patterns tend to show that 1 year prior to release of the film is when the teaser poster is
3. released. 6 months after that is when the theatrical poster gets released, 4 months later (2 months
before release is when more posters get released and become more common. Finally, only weeks
before release posters become products that can be bought by consumers. My posters will follow
this same method as I am creating a teaser poster that will be released first, then a quad poster that
will be released 6 months before the films release. Finally, my theatrical poster will be released
about 2 months before the film is released to the public.
After my poster research I realised that I needed ongoing theme in my posters to match them all
together and I also needed a tagline. Furthermore, I needed a design that would stand out from the
rest. My posters will shine within the industry as I have decided to design posters that are unique
compared to all the others. This is because the posters will be predominantly black and white with
little amounts of colour used. To addon to this, because my posters will be submerged in darkness, I
will control what is supposed to be in the light and what isn’t. This means that everything that can be
seen on the poster is there for a reason. However, I have taken some notes from posters such as the
“Us” teaser poster and “The Silence of the Lambs” theatrical poster. For example, the dark
background in “Us” posters and the font they use called Caslon. I have taken inspiration from “The
Silence of the Lambs” uses mostly shades of white and black in the poster with the slight uses of
colour in them. My camera shots are also similar to typical horror posters as they focus on the
emotions that characters are feeling whilst also displaying mystery of what could be going on. I have
also decided to always keep the billing block at the bottom of the poster as having it anywhere else
would be very odd and unnecessary. My posters will fit into the current marketplace by having the
same conventions of eeriness and horror that a regular horror poster, such as “Us” and “The Silence
of the Lambs”, will have yet being so different that it catches the eye of the consumer immediately
over the rest of the posters.
In creating these posters, the resources I will use are a camera and tripod to take the photos for my
posters and to keep the consistent. I will use photoshop to edit my photos, so they become a proper
poster. I will also use various big powerful lights to produce the bright clear patterns on the ground. I
will also need smaller, coloured lights for concentrated colours in my posters.
