DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT (GENRE & PLOT)
I am going to produce a film poster campaign for a paranormal horror film as part of the
promotional materials for the film ‘Signing Off’-
The film is about a group of 5 friends (Jenny, Kate, Stacy, Gavin and Brad) and someone who
they all hate (Chris) that stay round the main character Jenny’s Grandmas house, they find a Ouija
Board and release spirits. Most are shadow figured with no known identity however there is one
who is identified as an old man named Bill who is Jenny’s Grandma’s late husband. The spirits
end up killing most of the group when the survivors (Jenny and Chris) sign off the Ouija Board
which forces all the spirits back to where they came from. When they leave the house, they end up
being taken in for questioning on the suspicion of the murders of their friends.
The plot elements that I will feature in the poster are the group of 6. I am featuring this on the
poster because it is probably the most significant thing in the script which causes the plot to take
this turn of spirits killing the group. How I shall make all my posters look like a horror poster is
by having a creepy, horror like font for the Title. I shall also use a mixture of fairly dark and dull
colour so link to the idea of a scary horror movie with no happiness in it.
IMAGE LIST & BRIEF DESCRIPTION
For my Teaser poster I will have a POV shot looking onto the living room of grandma’s house
where the group of 6 shall be sitting in a circle with their hands in the middle. This image shall
have a fade in a circle around the outside of the poster to give the effect of the camera looking
through a spy glass at the front door of grandma’s house. Or I shall use photoshop to make a
fisheye effect to replicate the effect of looking through a spy hole. The title “Signing Off” shall be
at the top of the poster taking up most of the top of the poster. The release date shall be just above
the billing block in white with the font Daytona. The billing block shall be in the font Universal
Accreditation in white.
For my Theatrical poster it shall be a middle shot of the wallpaper which is the wallpaper in the
living room of Grandma’s house. There will also be two shadows on either side of the poster
which you will also only be able to see half of each shadow. The billing block shall be at the
bottom of the poster, the title shall be just on top of the billing block and finally the release date
shall be at the top of the poster.
For my Billboard poster it shall be a POV shot taken on the floor of wooden floorboards. There
shall be a Ouija Board facing upwards with the title on the front of it. In this shot as well near the
top shall be brown shoes like boat shoes and green suit like trousers. The billing block shall be at
the bottom of the poster and the title shall be at the top of the poster.
FONT LIST & BRIEF DESCRIPTION
2. POSTER CAMPAIGN PROPOSAL
I will use the Los Banditos font in white for my title because the I want the font to resemble the
writing font on an actual Ouija Board. The release date shall be white and in the font Daytona and
the billing block font I shall use will be the Universal Accreditation again in white. The reason
why all the writing shall be in white is so that its quite eye catching so it can get people’s attention
to take on the information given.
TARGET AUDIENCE (AGE, GENDER, LIFESTYLE, INTERESTS, SPENDING
POWER)
The Target audience for my poster are males and female from late teens to early 30s. One way I
have met this is by having an equal number of males and females as characters in my poster. Its
set in 2022 so it can attract early teens. However, the characters are part of the stereotypical
Halloween group that can attract the early 30s and late 20s because its like the older Halloween
style movies because it uses a similar feature, and they are used to in a horror movie. For
example, Kate is our nerd of the group. Brad is the jock and Gavin is his side kick friend who
agrees with brad on everything. Gavin is also part of the only couple with Stacy. Stacy is also the
popular “bimbo”. Chris is the one who isn’t very nice, and no one likes him. He is also the twin
brother of Kate. And Jenny is our protagonist/ main character. In our poster with the group sitting
around the Ouija Board you will be able to see quite clear which character is which in the group
which will attract the late 20s to early 30s. however the poster will be taken but a camera not
painted, or hand drawn which will also attract the target audience (mainly late teens) because its
presented as modern.
DISTRIBUTION
One reason why a poster is a good way to advertising a film is because posters can be put/ seen
everywhere in the outside world no matter what people are doing. If they are going to work, they
can see the poster. If they are going to school they can see the poster, if they are travelling
anywhere, they have the possibility of seeing the poster. A piece of information that needs to be
on the poster is a Title, this gives the possible audience something to work with to find the movie
to watch. It can also give something from the movie away so that people can work out if it’s the
type of movie that they want to see. A second piece of information is a billing block, this is the
writing at the bottom of the poster and is important because it shows people everyone important
who is acting in the movie or who has worked in the movie who people will recognise or both.
The next thing that should be on the poster is the release date for the movie, this tells possible
audiences when they can spend their money to watch the movie. Another important feature of a
poster is the main image which is normally the first thing people look at when seeing a poster for
the first time. The main image can give away what the movie may be about, or about something
that is significant to the story, this ten further makes the possible audience member think about if
that’s a movie for them. I believe that posters are an established form of distributing a movie
because movie posters have been around for decades and some posters are considered pieces of
art work which can further promote the movie.
However, movie campaigns have been used to oppose the one poster. This is because it is just as
effective as using a poster however a campaign contains a whole bunch of information in one
campaign compared to one poster that is fairly limited.
POSITION IN THE MARKETPLACE
3. POSTER CAMPAIGN PROPOSAL
One poster I researched was for the Horror movie The exorcist. This movie and my script are both
Paranormal Horrors and both have a similar layout to the first poster idea. They are done with
similar layout. For example, the Titles are both at the top of the poster. Their both have a main
image that are similar colours to my poster idea. They colour main colours that are used in the
title are different. The Exorcist poster is purple which can symbolise mystery and supernatural.
Whereas mine is to resemble a significant thing in the story (writing on a Ouija Board)
Another poster that I researched was the horror movie Arachnophobia. Both movies are again part
of the same genre however Signing off is a Paranormal sub-genre and Arachnophobia is part of
the natural horror sub-genre. However, a key similarity between the to posters is that the main
image contains a key place or where the place of action mainly is. For example, in the
Arachnophobia poster that place is a Rural village and a house in the Rural area. The poster for
Signing Off has a main image inside Jenny’s Grandmas house which is where most of the story
happens. A key difference between the two is that the layout of the poster for Arachnophobia is
slightly different for example with my poster the title is at the top of the poster making it one of
the first things (after of even slightly before the main image) however for the Arachnophobia the
Title is lower down making the reviews the first thing you see showing that it supposed to be a
good movie.
The final poster that I researched was for the Horror movie Friday the 13th
. Again, both posters
are for Horror movies. However, Friday the 13th
is part of the slasher sub-genre and Signing off is
part of the Paranormal Horror. However, the design of one of the original posters is extremely
similar to the idea of mine. For example, the main image in the Friday the 13th
poster the image of
the forest and the victims are inside a shape. The shape is Jason the killer. For mine the image will
be inside a circle t resemble or because it will be from the view of looking through a spy whole.
Only difference is the shape and that mine (if the camera actually looking through the whole
doesn’t work) will have a slight fade around it.
Overall, I believe that my poster for Signing Off will fit into the genre posters because they all
have the same idea of using darker colours with the image standing out to be one of the first
things you see.
