The document summarizes the posters created for a horror film project. Three posters were created - a teaser poster, theatrical portrait poster, and quad poster.
The teaser poster uses a dark house with a silhouette in the window to create unease. The theatrical portrait poster features the protagonist holding a bat with a green tint to symbolize the supernatural. The quad poster shows the scared protagonist against a background of partying teens to juxtapose horror and fun.
Adjustments were made to enhance the posters, such as a yellow blur on the teaser to depict lost control and trauma, increasing darkness and adding green to the theatrical poster for an ominous feel, and compositing the model into the party background
1. POSTER EVAULATION
Generic codes and conventions that I have added into my posters are the use of making my
images look dark like my theatrical poster as for horror posters they are usually quite dark to
create an uneasy atmosphere also the use of the main colour green fits with the horror genre
as it is a generic code for the supernatural and evil. Furthermore, the use of the protagonist
holding a baseball bat in the theatrical poster is a generic convention in horror films as these
are one of the most used self-defense weapons in a horror film. Then for my quad a generic
convention that I used was the party for the background as the protagonist is a teen and the
target audience varies from teens to 30-year-old and most teens/young adults stereotypically
throw parties so this will instantly interest these age ranges. Also, by having the protagonist as
17 teen year old in the quad/theatrical poster it will easily reach the target audience as this film
will be seen from someone’s perspective that is around the same age as them so it will be easy
for them to understand the narrative. Furthermore, the costume design that I have chosen for
the model I have deliberately chosen the denim-on-denim style to fit with the generic
conventions of 1980s fashion as this will attract the older audiences as they will recognize this
style and want to watch this film as a form of nostalgia. Also, any fans of Stranger Things, who
vary in age, could also be interested in this film as my film is set at around the same time as
Stranger Things so they may want to watch this because of this small similarity.
Advertising and marketing techniques that I am using to engage my audience will be using
social media like the Insidious film/poster I researched as lots of people use social media and
this would be an easier and cheaper way to advertise my film. Another way I am using these
marketing techniques is how I have chosen to have my narrative as a protagonist as a 17-year-
old African American girl in my film and have them as part of the theatrical and quad poster to
appeal to my target audience. I have done this as this is different from the usual horror films
where the people of colour are either just background characters or the first to die, but by me
changing this I think that this will reach a wider target audience like people of colour and
females as well as the young teens to 30-year-olds. Also, by me having the costume design for
the protagonist as denim on denim in the theatrical and quad poster, it will hint at the time this
is set in, 1980s, which will again target a wider audience for the ages 30 and above as they will
notice the costume design and would want to watch the film as a form of nostalgia. The aspect
of the films narrative I chose to include in the theatrical and quad poster is the protagonist
Imani I have chosen to use her as the narrative to appeal my target audience as I want to break
the classic conventions of horror films to appeal to my target audience especially the older ages
as I would assume they have seen a lot of horror films that are very similar narrative wise but
by them seeing this it would finally be something different for them to watch. Other parts of
narrative I have chosen to include from my film to my poster is the supernatural through the
theatrical poster where I have used the colour green which can be associated with the
supernatural and evil. Also, I have included a generic narrative of American high schoolers
where most of them like to party which is shown in my quad poster through the partying crowd
in the background appealing teens because they can relate to this. But also, it will attract horror
2. fans as in most horror films like Scream things happen in parties like someone being kidnapped
or murdered. Another way, I have attracted horror fans is through the protagonist in the
theatrical poster holding the baseball bat which most horror fans will know is a commonly used
weapon as a form of self-defense for an innocent character to stop the antagonist of the film.
I have appealed to both genders by showing that this is horror film because how I have laid
them out making them each look eerie and uneasy and have chosen specific colours that match
the conventions of a horror film poster so that the audience know what type of film this is and
as horror is suitable for both genders it will interest both. I have also attracted both audiences
because of whom I have chosen to play the protagonist, Zendaya, as she is incredibly famous,
and suits the role of a 17-year-old girl. Also, because I have presented my female protagonist as
strong and brave it will attract audiences that like films like this like Wonder Woman, Captain
Marvel, or any film where the female is being represented as strong.
I have also targeted the female audience specifically by having the protagonist an African-
America teenage female. This will instantly target the teenager, female end of the audience and
people of colour because they will feel that they are being represented in the character. I have
done this because both females and people of colour have been shown as weak background
characters, sex symbols or one of the characters that always dies first in a horror film I wanted
to change that in my film.
For the young male audience, I have attracted them to my film by including young male actors,
Griffin Gluck, and Jahi Di'Allo Winston as they will understand their narrative and because both
actors are different ethnicities it will attract a wider male audience. Another way I am attracting
the male audience is by how I have implied violence via the baseball bat in my theatrical poster
which will instantly interest them.
From the brief I have created three different posters, a teaser poster theatrical portrait and a
crown quad theatrical poster saved them as a PSD, JPEG and PNG. I have made sure that the
genre is conveyed in each poster for the teaser poster I used the colour red for the house to
show the blood, danger and violence that is inside of this house and having the house at a low
angle creates a sense of dominance and unease then in the top window there is a silhouette of
someone watching creating a sinister feel and making the audience want to know who it is also
showing the potential antagonist for this film which the brief asked for. Then for the theatrical
portrait poster I used the colour green to symbolize the evil and supernatural that is in this film
and having the protagonist face away from the audience makes them think and question who
the person is and why are they holding the bat again creating an uneasy atmosphere the brief
also asked to show the protagonist which I have done for both the theatrical and quad poster.
Then for the quad poster I made this look unsettling and sinister showing that this is for a
horror film by have the protagonist show their face, but they look scared like they have seen
something the audience cannot see but it also juxtaposes the background which is some teens
enjoying a party. Things like the colour schemes and using a party fit into the generic codes and
conventions the brief asked for as well as appropriate typefaces, but I also created a variation
from what the audience has seen before by having a diverse cast and having the protagonist be
a 17-year-old African American girl. I have also included the full tagline, billing information, the
full names of the main actors (which I chose to fit the genre narrative and attract the audience
especially by having Zendaya as the protagonist), certificate and release date for the theatrical
and the quad poster then for the teaser poster I only included the logo, title and tagline like the
brief asked for. The brief also asked for creativity to be at the fore front of the posters which I
believe I have done for all three posters, and my teaser poster reflects how Netflix prides itself
on innovation I have made this poster just out of graphics which is different from most of
Netflix posters. I feel I have successfully met the brief.
3. However, if I were to improve my posters to fully meet the brief, I feel that I could have
included the brother of the protagonist in the theatrical or quad poster to reach the male
audience a bit more.
My adjustments on my posters like adding the yellow gaussian blur on the teaser poster I used
this adjustment and colour yellow to symbolize a character losing control of oneself or to
highlight the trauma a character is being put through. It can also depict a shift in emotions or
state of mind. This is fitting for Sarah Miller as she suffers from sleepwalking for an unknown
reason, and she cannot control it. But it also makes it look like Sarah Miller is the antagonist of
the because of the yellow gaussian blur and how she is staring down at the audience from the
top window of the house. This helped to make my product successful by making this poster
look ominous
Then for my theatrical poster by me adjusting the contrast, shadows, saturation and using the
sharpening tool I made the main image look dark and adding a green tint but also making the
image look darker and making the image look more detailed. By me making the image look
darker it creates an ominous feel and adding in the green tint hints at the evil and supernatural
that lies beyond the dark corridor in this poster for the audience. By doing this it helps make
the product successful as it shows what genre this film is and creates a chilling atmosphere for
the audience.
Lastly for the quad poster by me removing the background from the studio shoot so that the
model can fit into the party background successfully. Then by me adding in the blue and
magenta gradient fills and added overlay on to the model to reflect the light blue will reflect the
characters isolation from the party and how lost they are because of what they have seen then
the magenta to reflect the danger that the character is seeing. By adding these adjustments, it
helped to make my product successful by making it look like my model was in the party and
created a sinister atmosphere in the process.
