4. Mood Board
Space and view from a blue moon have many cut scenes throughout the trailer which don’t
involve surfing and help make the trailer last longer whilst still making it look good. This is what I
will be doing with my trailer and these photos are some of the stuff I will be filling the trailer
with along side some surfing. These photos inspire my trailer because it gives off the beauty of
the ocean and incorporates the surfer showing that it is a surfing trailer even though there
hasn’t been any surfing yet. The main theme for this type of trailer is the ocean and the surfing
as it is a surfing film rather than a story. So I will be taking different styles into one trailer once I
make it.
5. Mood Board
For momentum generation, the trailer uses a variety of old surfing clips and new surfing clips.
These clips start from them surfing nowadays to when they were younger. This is because this
type of surfing film is more of a documentary style, so they have clips of them talking about
their past and then it shows the old footage. Also it involves clips of them going to different
countries and their journey. This part of the trailer is what I will be using for my trailer, as I will
be recording different parts of my journey to Thailand and my surf trips. Such as the airport,
boat journeys and loading the car. This will add a story to my trailer so it isn’t just a bunch of
random clips added together.
6. Mood Board
Missing is a surf film about Mick Fanning and him experiencing different cultures, it starts off
with minimal surfing and brings in more of the journey and showing him in different areas of the
world, experiencing how they live. The scenery is well done and shows the ocean in a lot of the
clips. The ocean for many of the surf films is the main aspect for the cut scenes which, I will be
using for my trailer. Also it shows a lot of the journey with his friends and him having fun in
fields. This will influence my trailer as I will be show casing a lot of my journey and what comes
with it.
7. Mood Board
Kissed by god is a surfing documentary/film that is made about Andy Irons who suffered from
opioid addiction and bipolar disorder. Throughout the trailer still pictures of him was scattered
around. This was a different style of trailer from the others I have seen as it usually includes
throwback clips instead of actual pictures. They also included pictures that slowly change, such
as doing zoom ins or editing them so that they focus on certain parts of the picture. The trailer
also includes clips that match what they are speaking about in the trailer. Such as when they
said rags to riches, it would show Andy when he was a child to money being counted. This
makes it clear to the viewer that his life changed for the better, this could effect my trailer as I
could include this type of editing to express something more clearly to the viewer.
8. Mood Board
Underwater photography is my favourite type for surfing photographs as it showcases how the
wave disorientates the water from underneath and it gives it a really nice effect when you are in
the right position. Such as the top right and the top left pictures. I am hoping that I get to have a
chance of getting some underwater shots in Thailand as the water will be really clear so it will
be perfect for any pictures or videos I need to take. It mainly depends if there is any swell at the
time I'm there. Sunset videos and pictures are my 2nd favourite type of way to show off surfing
and the waves as the sun gives off colours you don’t usually get, so you can capture some really
amazing things with the different colours it makes off the sand and water.
9. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
My mood board inspires my project as I am going to be using a lot of the aspects from
the films I have looked at. It also inspires what I will be including in my trailer such as
the type of scenery shots I include and how much surfing I will be presenting in the
trailer. The under water shots are the most inspiring for the project as I want to
showcase the environment as much as I can so that it is a good build up towards the
surfing clips. This will also make the trailer more enjoyable to watch so having good
natural clips or pictures will make the cut scenes better for the viewer.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
My mood board will influence mainly the shots I use and how much I show of certain
clips. Such as the surfing, scenery and the journey. They all need to have a good
amount of screen time without having to much time for each clip. This will be what
makes the trailer look good and have a nice flow with it. So taking notes from the
mood board could help with how the trailer is managed time wise. Also having
detailed shots for the scenery is an important part of the trailer as it acts as a cut
scene that leads up to the surfing, so having good looking clips or images will really
help with the overall look of the trailer.
10. Key Influences
Surfing is one of the biggest influences for the project as I decided to do a
surfing trailer for my final project. Surfing is my favourite sport and hobby to
do because it is nice to be in the ocean and not a lot of people experience or
even come close to some of the experiences you get from surfing. Such as the
wildlife and how the waves make you feel when you ride them and catch a
really good wave. So being able to do a topic I enjoy a lot will help with the
motivation for the project and make me want to create something I will be
proud of. Also I enjoy videoing nature, so making a surfing trailer will make it
possible to add that into my trailer. Surfing will influence my project as I will
want to capture the best moments for it as I possibly can because I will want
to show surfing in the good way so people enjoy the trailer. Surfing can be
made into a really good looking video if it is recorded correctly to show just
how smooth it is. So a big influence for my project will be to produce
something that captures surfing in a good way and just how nice it is to be in
the water. Just like John Johns surfing films are captured in a really nice way
that captures the beauty of surfing and nature into one. Which makes the full
film enjoyable to watch for the viewer.
11. Key Influences
Nature is a big influence on my project because I am able to work in the
ocean which is what I wanted to be able to do for my trailer so having that
freedom really motivates me to get good under water clips for the trailer. Also
it will make the filming process enjoyable for me and it wont seem like it is a
chore but more of a good experience. Being able to incorporate nature into
my trailer will help with the overall look for the trailer as it will break up the
surfing so it looks and feels more like a trailer, not just a surfing clip. Adding
nature into the trailer also gives off the vibe that it is going to be a surfing film
as the journey and ocean clips will make people understand that it is going to
be a surfing trailer to some type of film or documentary. The water
cinematography was by Chris Bryan, he did a really good job on capturing the
wildlife in the ocean perfectly, such as the school fish he managed to capture
without scaring them off. He also managed to capture the waves from under
the water without making them look bad, as he got some of the barrels
underwater looking like a tube. Like in this picture
12. Key Influences
Rip Curl did a series called surfing is everything, where they make 3-4 minute
videos of pro surfers surfing in different areas of the world. Such as Hawaii,
Indonesia and many more. It is mainly surfing footage but they split up some
of the clips with the surfers running into the ocean or them sitting with
people watching the waves after a long day. This type of editing is what I will
include into my trailer which makes the surfing have more life to it, as you see
the surfers in different places which adds a nice feel to the trailer. In one of
the episodes, there is some dialogue and the journey to the beach which also
is a good build up to the actual surfing. A good build up is needed for a trailer
because it makes the main topic more powerful to the viewer. In some of Rip
Curls videos, you can see that they slow down the video a little bit so you get
to see the person surfing for a little bit longer so that you can really take in
what they are doing and appreciate it a lot more. This would be an important
part to the trailer depending on the wave size and the size of the clips being
used. So depending on how fast or slow the clips are will determine on how I
edit them. That type of editing is a big inspiration for a surfer as you really get
to admire what they do and how they do it.
13. Key Influences
Blake Michel made a surf edit called Big Timers which showcased Jake
Marshalls surfing in a different way. The edit was 50% surfing and 50% cut
scenes which included a intro to the surfing and landscape shots. Then also
throughout the surfing shots, he split it up with the lifestyle of a young surfer.
This influences my trailer as I can see how much surfing he used between
each cut scene as it look very clean and the transitions didn’t look forced. This
would be beneficial for my trailer as it would let the clips look smooth
throughout the whole trailer whilst still keeping it looking good. The cut
scenes are also well edited so it sometimes cuts do different parts of peoples
outfits or their faces when they are doing certain expressions. This type of
editing would be useful for the journey clips of the trailer, as I could point out
certain things such as they time table for the flights and it could zoom into
the Thailand flight or cut into getting onto the plane. Blake Michel doesn’t use
a lot of nature for his cut scenes, they are more urban and the lifestyle. So his
style would influence the way I would show off some of the clips such as the
journey clips would be more edited rather than the nature shots that would
be slower and more elegant so that it doesn’t take away the vibe I want to
give off.
14. Key Influences
Space and View from a blue moon are some of my favourite surf films. Mainly
because they have my favourite surfer John John Florence but the way it is
made is very inspirational. They add nature into the film which is nice to see
as I like the mix of the two. These surf films are going to be a big influence to
my surf trailer as I want to incorporate nature into the journey and the surfing
clips so that it continues to show how nice the ocean is. Also the pace of the
films work really well with the clips they use, as they make the natural shots
slow and it really captures what is happening at that moment and also
showing how elegant it is. But then they change to a quicker pace of the
surfing which has a good contrast to the slow clips, but enough to see the
surfing in full effect still. This is a type of style I would like to incorporate into
my trailer. Also John John is a big influence to me as he has a very clean style
to his surfing and makes it enjoyable to watch and makes me want to get
better at surfing so that I can be able to do some of the things he is able to
do. The surf films also include different beach shots so that it shows the
surfer looking at the waves and is standing by the ocean with his board before
he goes into the line-up, this build up is something I am going to add into my
trailer as it has a nice calm build up before the surfing clips come into action.
