2. Pre-production• What are you making?
• I am making a surfing trailer which includes a variety of footage such as
underwater wildlife, the journey and hopefully some surfing in Thailand
but if not it will be in Scarborough. The trailer is going to be a mini story
that hopefully can be enjoyed by different people that are other than
surfers. This is because waves are inconsistent in Thailand so having other
elements that people enjoy could make the trailer better and more
enjoyable to other people.
• Why?
• I am making a surfing trailer because I enjoy surfing and it is my favourite
thing to do, also I love the ocean so being able to make something while
being in the ocean is something I would want to do more than anything.
The purpose of my trailer is that I want to make something a lot of people
can enjoy so that it is more than a surfing trailer but more of an experience
people can witness and remember.
3. • Who is it for?
• My trailer will be for a big group of people such as surfers, non surfers who
want to see the sport, people who like nature and photographers. A lot of
surfing films have a mix of people who watch the film and the trailer, this is
because it has elements of so many things that it can attract a wide variety
of people. This is what I am going to try aim for because I want to have as
many people be interested to my trailer as much as I can. It is also for any
age because it has nothing that could effect the age range so anyone could
watch the trailer.
• Where will it appear/on what?
• I will appear on maybe half or less of the clips because it is about my
journey to Thailand and hopefully some waves. But the audience will see a
lot of wildlife, the ocean and travelling such as planes, cars or boats. This
will mainly appear in Thailand when I am going into the ocean but some of
the journey will be in the UK and if there is no waves in Thailand where I
am the surfing will be in the UK as well which will be annoying but I will
have to do it because I am making a surfing trailer rather than just a
holiday trailer. I will also be going to temples so there could be some
culture and lifestyle in the trailer as well which will brake up the ocean
clips and make it look more of a journey.
6. Style sheet
My trailer will consist of a lot of colours which will be because of sunsets, underwater footage
and the surfing clips. So I need to showcase the colour as much as I can because then people
can see how amazing nature is and it also helps with catching peoples attention because the
want to see what is creating the colours. Also it will have a lot of blue in it because of the sky
and ocean so having a range of colour added to it will make it much more interesting to watch.
7. Shot List
For my trailer I will be using mainly close to medium distance shots because I am trying
to show off everything that I am filming. It will still have long distance shots scattered
around in the trailer but that will be mostly used in the journey part of the trailer, such
as when I am in the plane. While I am filming underwater, that is when the close and
rarely medium shots will come in because it will be to dark for any long shots and close
shots can capture a lot in the ocean because so much happens. So having detailed close
shots can benefit when it comes to the cut scenes because you have something to focus
on while it separates the rest of the footage. The cut scenes depending on what they
are will be a mix of all the types of distance shots because it can be different things
breaking up the footage. The surfing will have mainly medium shots as it will be
showing the surfer riding the wave so it will need space to show the full thing without
making it intrude and distract the viewer from the surfer.
9. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
Losing my phone while filming in the ocean
which results in losing all my footage
Make sure the wrist strap is secure and keep
checking if it is still with you if you put it down
Drowning while being in the open ocean
because you could get tired and not be able to
swim back to the boat
If you start getting tired go back to the boat
and get a life jacket or call for someone to help
you
Wildlife could attack you while you are
swimming
If you see anything troubling such as a shark
then head back to the boat but always look to
see where the shark is
The diving case leaking which would break my
phone
Make sure you test the case before you go to
use it and if anything looks wrong then don’t
use it
10. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
Waves hitting you and potential injury Make sure you can see the waves and not
look away without checking if there is a
wave coming.
Reef/coral/rocks Look at where you are walking or be careful
when you are near rocks or the reef because
you can cut yourself easily.
Collision with surfers Make sure you are not in the way of the surfers
and can get out of the way easily so that they
don’t hit you.
Riptides or heavy current Be knowledgeable about where you are
swimming and look at the current before you
go swimming.
