For week 1, the student used old skate footage from 2018 and added a VHS filter to make it look more retro. They began experimenting with effects to add fun elements to the videos, such as making a grass gap burst into flames when someone jumps over it. This effect took longer than expected due to the complex masking technique required to separate the skater from the grass. In week 2, the student completed the flaming grass effect and started changing the background of another clip to the interior of the main characters' house from Adventure Time. This masking proved even more challenging due to the need to track the skater's movement frame by frame. By week 3, the student added an introductory scene and adjusted the color

Production reflection
1. Week 1 Reflection
For week 1 I was lucky enough to use old unused skate footage
me and my friend recorded a long time ago. It is all based in York
still but was in 2018 rather than 2019. I have put a VHS filter on
top of the clips because it suits the footage quality and makes it
look more retro. I have also been trying to find suitable cartoons,
animes or even just random effects to go into the videos and
make them look more fun. So far I have made a small gap turn
into a flame burst when someone jumps over it but this has
taken me longer than I expected because of the new style I am
doing it with. The grass patch was way to patchy and wasn’t one
set colour so instead of ultra keying it, I had to do a technique
called masking where I draw around the area I want to get rid of
and replace it with the effect I want instead. The reason this took
so long is because the skater going over it meant that he would
disappear too. So I had to make a separate mask so that he
doesn’t go away and can look like he is going over it rather than
under it.
3. Week 2 Reflection
So far I have made the grass gap into an exploding flame when
he jumps over it and have completed the second mask which
makes him go over the flame rather than inside it and look like
he failed the trick. I also had to change a lot of the masking
because the auto tracker was really bad and went completely
wrong which meant I had to go over and check every second to
make sure it was over the skater and not somewhere random. I
have also started on my other video which I have changed the
background into the Adventure Time main characters house
(Finn and Jake) which I was planning to do with something else
but I have a lot of room to do on this certain clip so I am
changing it onto this one instead. The masking on this clip has
been way more challenging than the other one because I have
been needing to do every tenth of a second to make it look
smooth and not going into the skater at all. It was originally just a
stand still image of the house but I have now changed it to be a
moving clip from an episode which makes it look a lot better and
makes more sense because the skater isn’t the only moving thing
in the video.
5. Week 3 Reflection
For week 3 I added a small introduction to my video so that it
separates the skating so that you aren't going straight into the
skating and it also adds some time in the video as it has only 4
skate clips in the video. I have also gone through all the videos
and changing the saturation and vibrancy of the clips. This is
because I have put a VHS green screen on top of the clips so
having good quality clips underneath of the green screen
wouldn’t make sense and look right. Having this change in colour
makes things looks more old and it also goes well with the
quality of the clips and green screen. I have also decided to stay
with a theme other than the skateboarding in the video which is
Adventure Time. This is because one of the edited clips has a
backdrop with the main characters house in it so I decided to
make my introduction one of the dungeons Finn fights in. I
thought it was cool and it has no relevance to the actual video
but I put it in anyway.
7. Week 4 Reflection
For the last week of production I pretty much just went through
my video and tweaked and adjusted anything I thought would be
a noticeable mistake. Such as some of the edits with the house
for the background took a very long time to get right and make it
look like the person wasn’t fading in and out of the clip
constantly or even losing his leg or board midway through the
clip. So I decided to let the program do it for me and then I go
and adjust it so that it fits the skater more or less perfect around
his body and arms. The problem I have encountered for it was
that his right arm was in a awkward angle, so I decided to cut it
out and make it look like it is in front of the skater rather than on
the side. I also made the introduction a little bit longer as it felt
like it looked rushed and didn’t go into the skating well, so I
decided to make the introduction twice as long as before and
that makes the fight scene a little bit better looking and also it
fits the music better as well because it is very slow and sad at the
beginning so the skating didn’t fit it well.
