Poster Analysis 1
Natasha's costume is
very symmetrical, it uses dark colours
with pops of gold and silver.
She has symmetrical weapons, two
guns on each side and she's holding
two other weapons in each of her
hands as well.
The red background is covering
every character but the main
character – Nathasha Romanoff
aka Black widow –the red is only
accentuating
Her character, she is obviously the
center of the movie. She pops out
from the colour behind her.
The main colour of this poster is
red, maybe that represents Anger,
danger, violence, etc. Or maybe it
represents Love, Passion,
Determination.
I think it's a mix of both.
The ships and buildings in the
background of movie posters often
show up as an important point in
the movie. They've covered up
most of those details with the red
smoke effect maybe to say "watch
the movie and you'll understand
why we put that there" it's a good
way to draw in consumers. The characters behind Natasha all
seem, ready for a battle, angry,
suited up, has weapons except
from the man to the right who
seems more confused, maybe
that differentiates which
characters go to battle and which
don't .
Her stance is very powerful, if
anyone saw her walking
towards them they would
probably be scared.
Poster Analysis 2
This is a video game poster, it
fades from a purple, blue, and
green mix into a orange,
brown, and grey Smokey
background.
From it’s imagery on the
bottom half it’s quite
obvious it’s about war. The
tanks, weapons and their
outfits are all muted dark
tones, scruffed up from
battle.
The character in the top half
looks evil, very pale skin, magical
blue hair, red eyes, angry look.
The greens, blues and purples
in the top half could represent,
magic, power, domination.
Whereas the colours in the
lower half could represent war,
destruction, teamwork,
violence, loss, battle.
You can see a destroyed town
in the background, meaning
they’ve been fighting for long
enough to have destroyed
homes.
Everything is very
detailed
The character at the top is
staring more at you looking
evil, whereas the soldiers
have been pictured from a
third persons perspective.
I think you play the soldiers
in this game.
Poster Analysis 3
Red to blue in the
background, classic “good”
and “bad” colours, refencing
the mixture of the two in the
movie/show.
The different proportions
on each character is a
design element I’ve only
realised more recently
looking at a lot of posters
for movies, sometimes it’s
used for differentiate the
importance of the
characters, sometimes it’s
just a style choice.
If I saw this wish fresh eyes
(having not seen the show)
I would probably comment
on the confusing content of
the background but
because I have watched it I
understand why it has all of
these things on it.
All of the costumes are
quite dark except the
character in the middle
(Eleven) she pops out the
most, making it clear
she’s the main focus or at
least a very important
part in the show
Soundtrack
• Clip 1
• It sounded like a horror
• It made me think that they were hacking into something
on the computer and were rushing to not get caught.
• It suggests the characters are up to something or in
danger.
• It’s very suspenseful, telling you something is going to
happen to them or the thing they are doing.
• Clip 2
• It sounded like a rom-com
• It made me think that they were falling in love, maybe
solving something together, you can see the tension
quite easily.
• It suggests the characters work together
• It’s very chipper music, which doesn’t make you body
tense up like the other one.
• Maybe what happens next is one of them asks the other
out for a date.
Shining
• They use upbeat, friendly music
• They transition from scene to scene with non-dramatic editing
• They’ve used a narrator to convince you that this is a family
film, them saying things such as “Sometimes what we need
most is just around the corner” in the scene that Danny meets
Jack. They use friendly introductions with some extra info
about the characters “Meet Danny, ,he’s a kid looking for a
dad” seems harmless.
• Some scenes are less “PG” than others and if they had
different music and narration I would suspect it wasn’t a rom-
com but most of them are very convincing
Scary Mary
• They use very dramatic transitions in their editing, sometimes even
quick enough to make you jump.
• The music is very haunting, I wouldn’t want to listen to if I didn’t
have to.
• There’s no narration but there is text, they use anchoring sentences
like “she appears” “hide your children” trying to scare you before
even watching the movie which is what you see a lot in horror
movie trailers these days.
• They seem to use some reversed scenes, although I haven’t
watched the original movie nor trailer so that could be part of the
movie but it added a depth to the “oddness” of the video.

Clip Analysis
• There is an intense opening scene where Darth Vader is coming out of what looks like his base, the iconic Darth Vader music playing in the
background. It's a very cinematic scene. You see the other character's reaction to his entrance, and they seem scared.
• They have the main fight going on, but then added fights and drama in the background making the scenes quite intense.
• They seem to realise in the end that Darth Vader is too strong for them to kill, or even badly injure. Showing that they maybe had
underestimated his strength or overestimated their own.
• Darth Vader has a completely black outfit, including a black cloak and a black helmet. The only colour he has on him is the buttons on his chest
and the reflection from his red lightsabre. He has metal all over him just light armour that makes him at least seem harder to hurt.
• No matter how much the protagonist's fight, the antagonist is stronger and fights back harder, showing not any trained fighter can beat him.
• Ezra almost gets killed by Darth Vader using the force to make Ezra but his lightsabre to his own neck, It's a classic "oh no" before another
protagonist comes in and distracts the bad guy.
• The rebels have lighter, muted coloured costumes, with less of an armour-like material, softer.
• Vader so effortlessly lifts up the walkers, proving once again that if they kill the storm tropers he's out numbered in people but not in power.
• One of the rebels uses their gun against Vader's lightsabre then gets the literal backlash of it, making me think they didn't know that was
something lightsabres did, they seemed very unprepared for Vader and his skills.
• There's a lot of slow zooms to create suspense.
• The music always stays in a suspenseful, bad then worse tone.
• I've always felt that stormtroopers were just made as extras to kill so that the heros seemed stronger than they are, because if someone
couldn't kill the bad guy enough times it would become obvious the heros aren't very good at their job. Having them kill lots of
stormtroopers shows the viewers that they are heroic, just not enough to kill the big baddie... yet
• The sky/background is dark, and everything around them is muted. Most of the time producers/animators do this because they don't want
anyone to be distracted by a "pretty" or bright background, so they normal make it not very detailed.
• It's interesting how long a fight scene can feel, this video is only 2:45 and it feels like at least 5 if not more.
• "If that doesn't kill him what will?" - Ezra "Not us" - Kanan, I like that they seem to have thought it would be easy to kill Vader.
• They've made Vader taller than everyone, creating a sense of high ground.
• There's a few zooms into Vaders face, where the background grows darker, like they're trying to recreate a type of emotion through the lack of
facial expressions the character can have because of his mask.
• The transistions are very smooth, going from behind a character to in front of them, to a different character, it's sometimes difficult to get that
smoothness in animation but I really like the way they did it here.
• I think Vader could've won this fight, if the writers didn't want the rebels to survive for the many more episodes to come.
• The red of the darkside represents violence , revenge, anger. Whereas the jedi and people on their side of blue lightsabres is more calming,
spiritual, good.
• Even when they momentarily stunned Vader he was one step ahead.

Meaning theory pro forma

  • 2. Snake • Denotation • Slithering, Singular, Textured Reptile. • Connotation • Beautiful, dangerous, incredible hunters, Evil.
  • 3. Flag • Denotation • Symbol cloth, fabric, material, colour, pattern. • Connotation • Patriotism, togetherness, pride.
  • 4. Gun • Denotation • Fire-arm, Weapon, metal, plastic. • Connotation • Dangerous, Protect, Serving, Fear, Revenge.
  • 5. Poster Analysis 1 Natasha's costume is very symmetrical, it uses dark colours with pops of gold and silver. She has symmetrical weapons, two guns on each side and she's holding two other weapons in each of her hands as well. The red background is covering every character but the main character – Nathasha Romanoff aka Black widow –the red is only accentuating Her character, she is obviously the center of the movie. She pops out from the colour behind her. The main colour of this poster is red, maybe that represents Anger, danger, violence, etc. Or maybe it represents Love, Passion, Determination. I think it's a mix of both. The ships and buildings in the background of movie posters often show up as an important point in the movie. They've covered up most of those details with the red smoke effect maybe to say "watch the movie and you'll understand why we put that there" it's a good way to draw in consumers. The characters behind Natasha all seem, ready for a battle, angry, suited up, has weapons except from the man to the right who seems more confused, maybe that differentiates which characters go to battle and which don't . Her stance is very powerful, if anyone saw her walking towards them they would probably be scared.
  • 6. Poster Analysis 2 This is a video game poster, it fades from a purple, blue, and green mix into a orange, brown, and grey Smokey background. From it’s imagery on the bottom half it’s quite obvious it’s about war. The tanks, weapons and their outfits are all muted dark tones, scruffed up from battle. The character in the top half looks evil, very pale skin, magical blue hair, red eyes, angry look. The greens, blues and purples in the top half could represent, magic, power, domination. Whereas the colours in the lower half could represent war, destruction, teamwork, violence, loss, battle. You can see a destroyed town in the background, meaning they’ve been fighting for long enough to have destroyed homes. Everything is very detailed The character at the top is staring more at you looking evil, whereas the soldiers have been pictured from a third persons perspective. I think you play the soldiers in this game.
  • 7. Poster Analysis 3 Red to blue in the background, classic “good” and “bad” colours, refencing the mixture of the two in the movie/show. The different proportions on each character is a design element I’ve only realised more recently looking at a lot of posters for movies, sometimes it’s used for differentiate the importance of the characters, sometimes it’s just a style choice. If I saw this wish fresh eyes (having not seen the show) I would probably comment on the confusing content of the background but because I have watched it I understand why it has all of these things on it. All of the costumes are quite dark except the character in the middle (Eleven) she pops out the most, making it clear she’s the main focus or at least a very important part in the show
  • 8. Soundtrack • Clip 1 • It sounded like a horror • It made me think that they were hacking into something on the computer and were rushing to not get caught. • It suggests the characters are up to something or in danger. • It’s very suspenseful, telling you something is going to happen to them or the thing they are doing. • Clip 2 • It sounded like a rom-com • It made me think that they were falling in love, maybe solving something together, you can see the tension quite easily. • It suggests the characters work together • It’s very chipper music, which doesn’t make you body tense up like the other one. • Maybe what happens next is one of them asks the other out for a date.
  • 9. Shining • They use upbeat, friendly music • They transition from scene to scene with non-dramatic editing • They’ve used a narrator to convince you that this is a family film, them saying things such as “Sometimes what we need most is just around the corner” in the scene that Danny meets Jack. They use friendly introductions with some extra info about the characters “Meet Danny, ,he’s a kid looking for a dad” seems harmless. • Some scenes are less “PG” than others and if they had different music and narration I would suspect it wasn’t a rom- com but most of them are very convincing
  • 10. Scary Mary • They use very dramatic transitions in their editing, sometimes even quick enough to make you jump. • The music is very haunting, I wouldn’t want to listen to if I didn’t have to. • There’s no narration but there is text, they use anchoring sentences like “she appears” “hide your children” trying to scare you before even watching the movie which is what you see a lot in horror movie trailers these days. • They seem to use some reversed scenes, although I haven’t watched the original movie nor trailer so that could be part of the movie but it added a depth to the “oddness” of the video.
  • 11. Stereotypes Men • Strong • Heroic • Powerful • Scary • Disrespectful • Traditional • Useless • Angry • Sarcastic • In control • Main Income Women • Weak • Modest • Polite • Respectful • Able to grow • Frigid • Useless • House worker • Beautiful • Child carer
  • 12. Stereotypes Upper Class • Old • Traditional • White • Big house • Not many children • Shops at M&S and Waitrose Working Class • Younger • Small house • Lots of children • Shops at Lidl and Aldi
  • 13. Stereotypes Old People • Angry • Traditional • Territorial • Slow • Cold • Ill Young People • Immature • Unrealistic • Problematic • Environmentalists • Unfocused
  • 14. Iconography- Western • Desert • One road town • Guns • Cowboys • Texan accent • Smoking • Cowboy hats • 1vs1 man fight
  • 15. Iconography- Sci-Fi • Space • Spaceships • Good and bad guys • Big end fight • Spaceship fight • Robots • Dark colours
  • 16. Iconography- Fantasy • Mythical creatures • Magic • Bright colours • Ruins • Swords, bows, daggers • Nature • Beautiful architecture • Beautiful sceneary .
  • 17. Narrative • Narrative Definition • Having the form of a story • Linear Narrative Definition • Telling the events in chronological order. • Linear Narrative Film Example • Luca (Disney) • Casarosa, E. (2021)
  • 18. Narrative • Non-Linear Narrative Definition • Achronological, i.e the story is not, January, February, March it’s, January, October, March, or A character talking about May in January. • Non-Linear Narrative Film Example • Instant family • Anders, S. (2018)
  • 19. Clip Analysis • There is an intense opening scene where Darth Vader is coming out of what looks like his base, the iconic Darth Vader music playing in the background. It's a very cinematic scene. You see the other character's reaction to his entrance, and they seem scared. • They have the main fight going on, but then added fights and drama in the background making the scenes quite intense. • They seem to realise in the end that Darth Vader is too strong for them to kill, or even badly injure. Showing that they maybe had underestimated his strength or overestimated their own. • Darth Vader has a completely black outfit, including a black cloak and a black helmet. The only colour he has on him is the buttons on his chest and the reflection from his red lightsabre. He has metal all over him just light armour that makes him at least seem harder to hurt. • No matter how much the protagonist's fight, the antagonist is stronger and fights back harder, showing not any trained fighter can beat him. • Ezra almost gets killed by Darth Vader using the force to make Ezra but his lightsabre to his own neck, It's a classic "oh no" before another protagonist comes in and distracts the bad guy. • The rebels have lighter, muted coloured costumes, with less of an armour-like material, softer. • Vader so effortlessly lifts up the walkers, proving once again that if they kill the storm tropers he's out numbered in people but not in power. • One of the rebels uses their gun against Vader's lightsabre then gets the literal backlash of it, making me think they didn't know that was something lightsabres did, they seemed very unprepared for Vader and his skills. • There's a lot of slow zooms to create suspense. • The music always stays in a suspenseful, bad then worse tone. • I've always felt that stormtroopers were just made as extras to kill so that the heros seemed stronger than they are, because if someone couldn't kill the bad guy enough times it would become obvious the heros aren't very good at their job. Having them kill lots of stormtroopers shows the viewers that they are heroic, just not enough to kill the big baddie... yet • The sky/background is dark, and everything around them is muted. Most of the time producers/animators do this because they don't want anyone to be distracted by a "pretty" or bright background, so they normal make it not very detailed. • There's a few zooms into Vaders face, where the background grows darker, like they're trying to recreate a type of emotion through the lack of facial expressions the character can have because of his mask. • The transistions are very smooth, going from behind a character to in front of them, to a different character, it's sometimes difficult to get that smoothness in animation but I really like the way they did it here. • I think Vader could've won this fight, if the writers didn't want the rebels to survive for the many more episodes to come. • The red of the darkside represents violence , revenge, anger. Whereas the jedi and people on their side of blue lightsabres is more calming, spiritual, good. • Even when they momentarily stunned Vader he was one step ahead.
