2. TASTE FROM HOME MAGAZINE - OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2019
80%
of the population seek minimalism
Presentations are communication tools
that can be used as demonstrations.
3. HEADING AND STANDFIRST
The heading of the article is written in a sans serif, medium thickness, longish font in all caps that, along with the fact that it is sized
bigger than the other words on the page, makes it stand out prominently. The words in the heading itself are a phrase - while an
incomplete sentence, the words used are specific enough to still convey the point - essentially omitting all grammar syntax and
putting down the bare minimum on text which has the effect of making the subject of the article apparent. Thus, by using key words
they both get their message across strongly by being brief but precise.
The standfirst right under the heading is written in a much smaller sized text and in a different font which differentiates it from the title
and supplements the heading - detailing the article more and offering insight into the article that was omitted by the heading. It is
written smaller than the title and not boldly either as it forms part of the body of the article and is not a focal advertising point in this
double spread.
The article ittself is written in a numbered format - ten recipes have been given, each
from 1 to 10, with 5 on each half of the double spread. The title of the recipe is written
in bold and slightly bigger than the attached body of text [the recipe]. The recipe credit
is given after a hyphen, in italics, to show a distinction between the recipe and the
giver. The body of the article has been divided into three columns which helps the
article look orderly and organised and avoid a cluttered look. The relatively larger
number size compared to the text makes the text look more interesting and attractive
and the dark font against the light background makes the text easy to read.

4. ANCHORING IMAGE
The anchoring image - serving as the background as well - consists of
the pictures of all the recipes given in the article. They have een placed
in similar crockery - white bowls and the bowls are not arranged in an
order which gives the picture a rustic look and homely feel. The
contents of each of the dishes can be seen clearly because of the
angle and the way the light is coming directly onto the dishes
themselves. The colors of the dishes too are vibrant and complement
each other and seem to represent autumn. The dishes are numbered
as well, corresponding to their dish recipe.
The page number is given at the corner of the page, written very small as it is
not an advertising point.
The month and year is mentioned to record the time of publishing of this
magazine.
The website is given in the right most bottom corner, and is in fact the reader
may read on this double spread and is thus effectively placed in terms of
marketing strategy.
6. HEADING AND STAND FIRST
The typography is unconventional for a heading in this article: the heading is written centrally and
one word per line only. Also the size and specific style of each word differs - the last word having a
different font altogether. The inner two words are white sandwiched between the red words. The
words fashion and father, largely written, stand out as key words implying the article is about an
important fashion figurehead. Moreover, the word fashion is written in a serif font while the rest are
written sans serif, the serif being used here serving as an embellishment - highlighting the fact that
this is specificly about fashion .
As for the stand first, it is written in a much much smaller font than the heading and serves as an
introduction to the article here, identifying the person who the article is about and what specific
achievement it is about. The writing style is very dramatic which simultaneously gives the reader the
context of the article as well as pulling in their attention with their carefully crafted, almost story like
retelling of actual facts, which adds a note of fantasy to the text, its simple explanation yet
vagueness invoking curiosity and encouraging them to read on.
The credits are given right under the stand first, crediting the writer of the article.
ARTICLE
The article has been divided into two columns, seperated by a single line seperator. The first letter of the article
has been stylised as an initial cap, that too in a different font and color from the rest of the article, just for aesthetic
purposes - to make the article more pleasing to look at. The article itself is an interview but written in the form of a
feature, like a story, which is often seen in long celebrity interviews, for example the interview of the Strokes in the
November 2003 issue of Rolling Stones magazine, titled 'The Strokes: Elegantly Wasted' . This format makes the
celebrity in question seem more human or approachable and less as a celebrity figure and also allows the writer of
the article more creative freedom in creating a narrative or personality for the celebrity in question in the
article. The color of the font is white, which creates a sharp contrast against the blue of the background, making it
easily readable.
7. ANCHORING IMAGE
The photo forms almost two thirds of the double spread and shows the person
being interviewed and his wife, posing for a photograph. His shirt, showing the
American flag represents his love for his country. They both look happy, and
relaxed, judging by their relaxed shoulder stance and placement of one hand
casually in their respective jean pockets. They are shown in an open area,
wearing sunglasses and casual clothing implying they might be here for leisure.
The couple is shown standing very close to each other, practically joined by the
hip, and the wife is looking at her husband smiling - showing they have a happy
relationship.
The importance of this photo being used is to create the narrative that this world
famous designer is just a normal person, your regular all American family guy who
loves his wife, assisting the article in presenting Ralph Lauren the normal person
and not Ralph Lauren the world famous fashion designer.
This text is a quote from the article, pertaining his wife and is used to
advertise the contents of the article.
This contains the website, and the name of the article, written in the bottom
corner of the right end of the double spread. This is done as marketing for the
magazine.
8. DOUBLE SPREAD #3 - 5/2018 SHE CANADA MAGAZINE
Leonardo Da Vinci
Simplicity is the ultimate
sophistication.
9. HEADING AND CREDIT
The heading of this article is written in an uncommon
font style - it resembles the work of a gel pen, it
looks pretty and casual, but due to the fact that this
is the only text in the article with this font and that the
size of the words is the biggest here, makes the title
stand out nonetheless. The color of the words is
pink, and it may be chosen due to the fact that the
article's intended audience is female. The writer of
the article is credited right under the title in plain
black.
ARTICLE LAYOUT
The article's typography is very varied throughout the article - the
colors keep changing, and so does the font. The stand first is
black, but it has a blue initial cap (for aesthetics).
The font for the main body and context of the article is formal and
plain black. The part of the article that pertains to color mixing is
colorful, for example, over here it is pink.
Attached underneath it are pink images with a supporting color
wheel diagram. The variations in colors and font styles make the
article over all more appealing and attractive to read. The colors
used are all being supplemented by matching clothing items or
accesories, possibly to draw a feminine crowd. The article has
been arranged in a two column style, with pictures mostly on one
side, with the text on the other side.
ANCHORING IMAGE
The image here, is the largest in
the article and attached to the
heading of the article - it is a
color wheel, exactly what the
article intends to enlighten its
audience about. The image is
given for clarification purposes.
