3. Research
Strengths of research
• Gathering information about the product greatly enhanced the amount of detail and ability to express succinctly information about the product, thus making the
product potentially better than if I hadn't researched. I used the internet tend library o look at images of Rastafarian culture. Texts on music websites gave me further
information about the music genre. I looked at Bob Marley as a reference point for Ali Marley. I looked on religious forums to find out about Rastafarianism.
• The surveys that I had conducted were very useful because they gave me information about what my demographic of my audience, like their age, which was
primarily 16-19 year olds (80%). Knowing this demographic, was useful because I knew I could implement modernised styles of older styles that people of a younger
age would find appealing. I conducted another interview on gender which showed that 80% were male and the other 20% were female. Using this information on
gender, I did some research and found that men are highly attracted to two out of the three primary colours that I used in my products (Red and Green). Since there
is 20% of my audience that is female, the third primary colour (yellow), will be useful in my products because yellow is a colour that that gender is highly attracted to,
like guys are to green and red, females will be attracted to my products colours as well, but not to the same degree. Finding this information is also very good
because the genre I’m using in my products is Reggae/Reggae fusion, which is primarily male, which is good because that means that my demographic is more likely
to be inclined to enjoy my products. Learning about my audiences age and gender was a vital tool that was used to target my demographic thus persuading my
audience overall want to buy my products more. If I didn’t try and use techniques to try and target my demographic the result would have most likely not have been
the same.
• One question from the survey that was helpful to make my products appeal to my audience was the “What image style do you most prefer?” question because the
answers made me understand that majority of my audience preferred vibrant images (50%) and the second highest answer was cartoon (30%). Using this information
was useful because I could specifically tap into my audiences visual preferences thus making them more likely want to invest in my products.
• The strengths of conducting the three interviews was that I got different perspectives on the same questions which made me understand how people thought about
the what they would have to be on the products
Weaknesses of Research
• It took me a long time to do research because the information about Reggae is sometimes hard to get because the genre isn't recorded formally in music history as it
isn't mainstream.
• I knew some things about Reggae from my general knowledge, so I used research to confirm what I knew. However, this left me doubting my knowledge sometimes
as finding confirmation wasn't easy.
• Some questions from the survey, like “What would you associate with Reggae?”, weren’t very useful research because it was information that didn’t have much
usage. When doing research you get information that isn’t going impact your work very much and that’s a weakness because it can prevent you from doing work
efficiently and gathering important information.
• The interview answers that I conducted had short and non-specific answers which was a weakness because I didn’t get a lot of information from the text since it was
limited.
What could I have done better?
• Although I did a fair amount of research, I certainly could have done more to become broader in my knowledge of the subject. This may have had a bigger impact on
this work, however, since I had knowledge beforehand and had done some research, it wouldn’t have made my work a lot better as I had enough knowledge to fulfil
the set criteria. I should have written down my sources as I researched, so that I could include them in my work to give credit to the authors.
• I defiantly could have made more tactical questions in both my questionnaire and survey for my research so that I would have gain more information about my
audience and what their thoughts and ideas are on the Reggae and the product types.
4. Planning
Strengths of Planning
• On the style sheet you can expore fonts, styles and images leading up to production, which was useful because it can made me really
think about what what styles, images and texts I was going to use and why so that I knew what was going to do and that I had acctually
looked at different influences of style so that I coulddevelope my products and ideas in production.
• Making potential layouts designs and annotating them for my products was helpful because it made me understand what I was going to
do visually and what the visual designs of what I was going to do would mean and symbolise which was vital for my learning because it
made me fermly know what I was going to do for my products and why I was going to add colours, stybols and images to my products,
which was helpful in progressing forward.
•
Weaknesses of Planning
• I find planning with a digital mind map is really slow and spoils the flow of the research and spoils the enjoyment.
• It takes time to complete the planning, which limits the time of production where I could had added more things like
images, coloues etc.
• Personally, the contingency planning and the health and safty wernt useful for me before and after production because I've never had
to worry about them because U've aways known what do do in those situations, so I think that these weren't a weakness in planning
because they got in the way of going onto the production.
What could you have done better?
• I could have added more details as to what I wanted to put onto my product oin my pre-production, so that when I was stuck, I could
just go back to the plan and brainstorm the criteria.
• I could have made my layout plans much better because althought they were mock ups, they could have been more detailed.
5. Time Management
• I would have most likely done better if I had additional time because then I would
have been able to add more things to my production and also written work which
would have made my products even better because I would have had more
information going into the production.
• If I had more time to complete my work I would have added and taken way some
features from my products and fundamentally taken more time to think about
what I'm going to do.
• Scheduling days to do work on the pre-production PowerPoint was also helpful
because I could spesifically plan out when I was going to do my work and what
work I would do within the time frames which enabled me to focus more as I had
set dates to pursue final major project work at.
• Althought I didn't stuck with the schedual to the dot when doing production, it still
made me able to focus more then I would have done without the schedual. Also a
feature within the schedual that made me happy I added it was that I added
persice times of the day because it made doing work stricter on me since there
were set time to do them in.
6. Technical Qualities
My ProductExisting Product
Probably one of the biggest differences between my product and the existing product is that mine has a lot more colour
on it, mainly because in photoshop I imported more vibrant images then the exsiting product has and also because I
altered the colours of images in photoshop using the hue and saturation tool. The existing product is just one image with
moderate saturation levels and high contrast. In contrast, my product isn't one image, it is as image of the subject (Ali
Marley) in the centre of the image cut in such a away so that you can see the background of colours which sybolise
Rastafarianism, a religion that is populated in Jamaica and is highly accociated in Reggae. The existing product uses a
rawer style because it is barely edited oppose to my which is highly edited with colours, distortion and overlay.
Great similarity of both products is
that the existing product and my
product both feature men in the
centre with deadlocks to culturally and
socially signify Rastafarianism. In my
product I used a text with a green
shadow behind the text saying, "Ali
Marley interview!", which I made in
photoshop with a text box to make the
magazine look more intriguing because
it made the reader want to read more.
We can also see the same technique of
using an interview on the product was
well.
Another difference is that my
product is much more moderised
because mine is in much better
resolution and uses a whole range
of techniques from photoshop
like darken blending mode on the
text to make it see though so that
I could mask ganja on top using
a overlay, transition warp on text
to bend it slightly around the
subject and colour corrections
(Hue & Saturation, Brighness &
Contrast and Curve) which all
came to use when producing my
product because I need these
tools to produce my magazine
cover in the style that I have
created.
7. Aesthetic
Qualities
My work looks good, especially since I've added aesthetic features, including complimentary and contrasting colours, eccentric patterns and
interesting visual structures within the products. The two main products that standout to me the most are album cover and poster because I
added a 60s psychedelic influence to them which came out well in the end of production. This aethetic is appealing because neo-psychedelia
is becoming more popular and also because I did a survey and in one of the questions from the survey the majority of my audience said that
they wanted vibrant colours with limited colour schemes so I decieded to pander to their needs of visual style and went ahead with it. In my
interviews one person said that I need to make my album cover interesting because you need as many people to see it as possible which is an
answer from my interview that I highly agree with because for a lot of artists, the album is the central point of their work and if that isn't good
and interesting, it won't do very good as a product because it won't have substance. Both my album cover and poster are appealing because
they both have eye catching colours, patterns and sprirals that draw your eyes to the subject.
With the magazine and the shirt I decided for more of a Rasta influenced style with the red, yellow & green. In my opinion, this resulted very well
with both products. However the one product that surprised me the most was the shirt because going into this I thought I was going to make a dull t
shirt, which it wasn't because I added three Rasta rings around the shirt, a Rasta peace sign and Rasta text as well, which turned out very well it gave
the shirt more style because the shirt had more on it. This shirt is appealing because it features the artist Ali Marley on it which may be appealing
because there may be fans who enjoy Ali Marley's music and may want to buy the product because of that. In my recent survey, my audience said
that they wanted minimum 50/50 text and image on magazine and a maximum of 75% image and 25% text which is what I applied to my magazine
because that’s what most people enjoy when they for a magazine cover. And in my interview someone said that they would like text around the
image on the magazine, which is what I applied to this product aswell. Not only do I used interesting styles and colours, I also use things that I've seen
in my questions from my survays and interview that people like and used them in my product so that my audience will like them since I've asked
them what the would like to see in my products.
8. Audience Appeal
My shirt appeals to my target
audience of 25 – 44 year olds who
like reggae. This is a casual shirt
and it symbolises in a non-
offensive way that the wearer is a
reggae fan.
In my class of peers (not the
targetted audience but who was
available) the majority of them out
of my survey expressed that they
would prefer a T-Shirt that has
medium to small images on it. I
responded and delivered that to
them so that my product will be
more appealing.
My magazine won't just be appealing because it has the text
to image balance that my audience wanted from my survey,
it will also appeal because it is overall a very good magazine
cover because of its stylistic and moody Reggae feel.
I chose this image style
because when I asked my
class, "What image style
do you most prefer?"
Five out of the ten said
vibrant and three out of
the ten said cartoon. As a
result, I decided to clash
genres a bit and make a
really vibrant high
contrast psychedelic
inspired vintage poster.
Which I think will most
definitely appeal or be of
interest of my audience.
This album cover would be very
appealing to my audience because it
has a striking, informal and
visually extraordinary feel to it. It
has an exciting flowing psychedelic
background and text, which will be
appealing to my audience,
especially after reviewing my
surveys and questionnaires. Also
another visually aesthetic feature to
this album cover is that of the artist
on it as he is very expressive and
grabs your attention
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– There is a variety of styles with the products
– Visually aesthetic
– Good Reggae feel
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– There should have been more text on the album cover
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– The colours used
– The patterns
– Reggae influences
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• Increase the quality and smoothened out images to make then look as good as
possible
• Add more to the products
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The images
– The style
– The magazine's aesthetic looked really good.
– All of the products
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• The album cover needs more features on it
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– The enjoyment of colour and style within my feedback because I was clever
about the colours and style that I had used so I agree with their feedback.
– There should be more text on album cover because when I look at my album
cover there's something missing and I could have added more detail onto it.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– The mention of low quality of my products because my products have quite
good quality. I want a raw and authentic look.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
– I would add more features like a lion on my album cover because the lion is a
symbol of Rastafari and it is tightly connected with Reggae and it's culture around
it. Another thing that I would add to my album cover is more text because in the
potential ideas I showed that I had text at the top and the bottom. However I didn't
add any text to the bottom so if I were to make any changes it would be to add text
at the bottom of the album cover to fill up the space and to add more to the cover
because it looks a little bit too dull since there isn't much on the cover.
– Another change that I would pursue would be to add more colours and text to my
products, especially the non-psychedelic inspired ones because although they do
use colour, my audience, overall wanted vibrant colourful products and I think it
should have been more motivated to add more colour since that’s what my
audience wanted and products are made for the audience so I defiantly should've
focused more on what the audience wanted and should have asked more
questions to get a larger poll of people so that I would get more feedback that I
could have used to apply to my products to make them better.
– I should have added more detail to products like I did with the magazine because
the magazine had a lot of details, which made it very interesting to look at. Adding
too much details can be bad for products, however it wouldn't hurt if I were to add
more details to some of my other products, especially the album cover but also my
shirt and poster to optimized the potential of the products visual weight.
