This proposal is for visual products promoting the fictional reggae artist Ali Marley. The products will include a poster, album cover, magazine cover, and t-shirt. They will feature elements of Rastafarian culture like the Ethiopian flag colors, dreadlocks, and references to cannabis to educate viewers about reggae's roots. The target audience is male, ages 16+, of any social status interested in reggae. Elements like depictions of cannabis smoking will only target adult audiences to avoid encouraging underage drug use. The proposal discusses researching and incorporating appropriate cultural symbols while avoiding potentially offensive or copyrighted material.

Working Title: Ali Marley
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
Product’s Purpose: The purpose of my products is to create visually interesting images to
hook the audience towards the music entertainment. These imageswill persuade people to
listen to Ali Marley and educate the viewer about the origins of Reggae which uses the
Ethiopian flag colours and Rastafarian culture.
What is the product’s purpose (entertain/educate etc.) and how will you achieve this?
Genre: My products will be a poster, album cover, magazine cover and T shirt.
What sort of product is it
Content
My products are about Ali Marley’s lifestyle, culture, ideological thinking and music. It will
also show where the venues are for a British concert tour. With the Rasta colours, cannabis
leaves and dreadlocks, its genre is quickly recognisable to an audience interested in this
culture.
Rastafarianism is a religion and he is presented as a god-like, iconic figure in these visual
representations. Part of the culture involves ganja smoking which makes the smoker high
and Rastas believe it helps opens their mind. They do not see anything wrong with this as
they believe Jah (their god) gave it to them.
I will achieve the poster design by using fluorescent and contrasting colours which
highlight the figure of Ali Marley. The twirl of colours in my poster, which are associated
with a 60s psychedelic style, draw the eyes towards the central figure of Ali Marley.
The album Cover will also have the Rastafarian flag which reminds the listener about the
roots of Reggae. The red represents blood, the yellow represents the wealth of Africa and
green is lushness.
The T shirt will have a peace symbol consisting of red, yellow and green. This will stand out
on a white background. I will add extra detail on the arms. The singer sings about love and
peace and the symbol refers to peace.
The magazine cover will feature a distinguished ganja (weed) smoking Ali Marley with full
dreadlocks, a texture of cannabis leaves which are valued in the Rastafarian culture, the
Rastafarian flag colours, grungy background to reflect the moodiness of the scene and a
British flag as this is where there will be a music tour along with the cities named where the
tour will take place. There will be a bar code which is often found on magazinesto assist
with purchase.
What is your product about? Discuss what you would put in it (be specific). Does it have a story? If
so, discuss it here
Research & Planning
Where will you use elements of your research and planning to influence and inform your final idea
(be specific to certain parts)
I have discovered via my research that I would like to implement certain associated elements into
my final product. These might include colours of the Ethiopian flag and Rastafarian flag,
dreadlocks, ganja and peace references. Most of these styles will have colour and pattern styles
that suit the vibe of the genre. Presenting the character like a messiah figure, in the centre of the
frame psychedelic distorted lines that lead towards him draws the eye of the viewer. I will look at
how other messiah type figures are presented.
The ganja gives the products some shock value and weight as a Rastafarian interest.

Audience: My age demographic is 16+ because I think that most people under 16 wouldn’t
listen to reggae, thus making 16+ suitable age. My audience is mainly male because
Reggae is more male dominated. My project would appeal to any specific social status
because I think that Reggae style can appeal to many different social statuses. I think that
emulator because the audience would probably want to attract their peers. Also, using
ganja for persuading under 16s is not right and it might be seen as pushing drugs rather
than Ali Marley.
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc
Why would your project appeal to this person?
Legal & Ethical Considerations:
Think about any offensive material you will include?
I will try my hardest to try and not insult and/or offend any cultures, races and religions.
Drugs content might upset some people, but in Rastafarian culture it is acceptable.
Will you restrict younger people using/accessing it?
Yes because Ali Marley is smoking which isn’t allowed for children and under 18s. It could
encourage people to start smoking and taking ganja.
Will it offend any social groups/religions/ethnicities?
The smoking of ganja is accepted in Rastafarianism, but not otherwise.
How will you ensure you do not offend anyone?
I will stick to things that are not controversial as much as possible. Ganja is not broadly acceptable
but is part of the Rasta culture which should have an opportunity to have a voice. Some people
might censor the image of the smoking, but this would only be available to adults.
Are you using characters/names/logos of existing products/IPs?
No, because it could cause copyright issues.
Will your product be sufficiently different from existing products to not get sued for copyright
infringement?
Of course, because I don’t want to my product to be infringed in that way because then I could lose
a lot of work and money in that respect.
