4. Pre-proposal
For my factual project I plan to create a bird feeding guide in the form of a web series episode. I was
originally going to take the route of making a product that revolves around British wildlife but then thought
it would be a better idea to be more minimal to avoid complications and so that I can focus into one sector
of animal sub species. This will also be of convenience because making a tutorial video that includes a
garden will allow more audience to be equipped with what is needed for the guide then if it was about how
to feed a bird of prey since a lot more people have a garden then a Hawk for a pet.
When recording my bird feeder I plan to try and at least get multiple bird species recorded because then
what their will be more of a variety of birds thus making my video more diverse. Which is good because
it would make my video's information feel more informative as the audience would then see the product of
what my guide could deliver. I plan to either use my iPhone and a GoPro to record the footage that attached
to branches that are near to the feeder so that I can get clear footage of the birds up-close.
Also I intend to edit my video to a moderate degree because I think that putting too much editing into this
project wouldn't suit the garden aesthetic. The editing that will be most dominant for my product will most
likely be the cutting of the raw video clips hence my factual video is supposed to be 3 minuets long at
maximum and it could drag on if I didn't have consistent cuts whist the presentation is being performed.
5. Skills Audit
A skill that I need to develop is that of structuring what I am doing by doing production in sections so that I
don’t over complicate the thing that I am doing and make it messy. A great way that I could do this is if I
focus on one thing, like audio, then switch onto video editing/recording when I have finished with what I
would need to do for that. Through my career I haven't had much experience with camera recording, except
for my music video, which turned out decently well for the style I was going for. However, I haven't tried to
properly record nature at all so my experience is low thus meaning I will need to do effective amounts of
research so that I can get to an understanding about what I techniques I could use. Also my experiment will
come in handy to practise similar ideas that I will use for my final product because I can understand and
distinguish what potentially would and wouldn't work in a bird feeding guide context for my factual film.
Although I'm not used to recording nature, once I have completed my experimentation I and have gone onto
the production of my final product, I'll be comfortably able to edit the clips like I have done in multiple other
projects. As well as in personal experiments that have developed my skills to useful level for my work as I
usually don't have to worry about how to do something within the adobe software's because of
my knowledge about the tools and how to use them.
7. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
My mood board inspires my project because it me ideas about what I could use for my final project. Such as
the colours that I may use and the people on it like David Attenborough, Chris Packham and Steve Backshall
who have had a great impact on my individualist love for nature because of their authentic and beautiful
nature documentaries.
A large picture of a presenter is on my mood board because I plan to create a presentation of my bird feeder
being formed in a clear setting like the picture shown. This inspires my project because it encapsulates what
I will most likely aim for in my project.
Images of drawn birds are depicted on my mood board because they show what garden birds live in the
United Kingdom and I intend to add animated birds onto my project that I have produced.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
My mood board will influence my final product because I will defiantly use elements that I have used within
it. The bird feeder will influence my product because my final product revolves around the creation of one
which is why I made the image of it larger than David Attenborough.
Birds on their own is a massive influence on my product because when I was younger bird watching was a
hobby of mine. I used to put up bird feeds when I was younger and even went to nature sites to see them.
Therefore I decided to put them on my mood board because without my hobby of bird watching in my past, I
wouldn’t have pursued this product type. Which is why it was necessary that I put it on my mood board
because just birds existing was enough to make me encapsulated without any external motivations.
8. Key Influences
Bird Watching
Bird watching has defiantly been a key influence for my
factual project because without that hobby as a kid until
now I wouldn't have pursued the same factual project as
I am going to do now. Which is going to be about how to
set up a bird feeder to attract birds to your garden. This
was also a great influence on my project because what
bird watching is about is such a non-specific and large-
scale phenomenon that it just seemed like a wonderful
idea to attempt to create something in the realm of
something, I am so interested about that also has so
many possibilities for a project.
Although summer is the best time of the year to go bird
watch, since I've been outside there has been an array
different birds about in the daytime. Which has also
been an influence to make a bird feeder video because
knowing that the weather has the potential to enable
various birds to roam free in their environments
important for the plan, I have in mind for the clips of
birds that I will be getting for my video.
The accessibility of bird feeding and watching is what
also pushed me to venture into creating a film about it
because it made a lot of sense for me create something
home-base. Especially in a pandemic where social and
outdoor actives have been hugely restricted because of
COVID-19. From this, people are locked in their homes,
often with not much to do. Thus why I am making the
decision to make a bird feeding guide.
9. Springwatch
Key Influences
Springwatch has defiantly been influential for my
project because the way the producers talk in depth
about animals whilst they show videos of the
animals is very entertaining and leaves a positive
impact on the audience. Since I have seen
Springwatch I had thought of doing something
similar myself because it seems too consistent
because birds are part of nature and so they will
frequently be around different environments that I
could use to record them.
My garden synergies well with an ideal bird feeding
environment because it is connected to a small
forest so when I watch Spring watch it reminds me of
how there is always animals around and that there
are ways of getting clear recordings of the animals
for a presentation of what they are doing. This style
of presenting animals living their lives whilst various
activities is something Springwatch has mastered
spectacularly well because of the way they can
articulate the activities of animals and of their
fascination.
10. David Attenborough
David Attenborough was a huge influence on my
factual project because of his iconic narration of
animals and wildlife a long side professional
production which makes me want to record and
narrate animals myself because seeing other people
create such great documentaries about a topic that I
could cover. This makes more feel inspired to do
make a video of bird feeding with imagery of garden
birds.
Even since watching David Attenborough's planet
earth when I was younger and then seeing clips of
the TV series later on YouTube, before this project.
This made me want to create something to do with
wildlife because it was produced in a magnificently
way and it was the first time, I had heard David
Attenborough speak which allured me into the
animal life around me more. My favourite episode in
the Planet Earth series was Pole to Pole because I
remember learning so much about polar bear and
how they live their lives through their hardships and
their desire. This was entertaining to me and it was
probably the first big eye opener for my love for
birds and animals.
Key Influences
Editor's Notes
Collection of images related to your product/inspirational/visually interesting
At least 15 needed. These should not just be just existing products. Anything and everything that inspires this project should be here.
Make the theme obvious – make it clear what you’re trying to get across
Use a combination of images sizes – or build around a larger central image
Incorporate text
Look beyond the internet – use books, your own photos, etc
Be a curator – create links between the content, the ‘thread’ will make it easier to understand
Make more than one! If you want to examine different themes or cover different aspects of the possible outcomes of your project, create multiple boards to convey you thoughts and intentions
Identify at least 3 key influences and discuss how and why they will influence your project.
