2. Product Experimentation
For my factual project, I will be producing an episode from a web series which, I will narrate over a guide of bird feeding which, gave me the idea
of focusing on the narration and visual aspect of web series for my experiment since that would likely be my weakest point for my factual product
because I haven’t had as much experience pursuing and executing narration as much as video recording and editing throughout my career. The
plan for my experiment is to create recordings of me producing a paper plane that relate to the similar recording aspect types of my final factual
product, so that I can create an experimental template so I can enable relevant synergies for the narration to link-in what is being depicted within
the video so I can have a more introspective and meditative lead up when working through my experiment for my official factual video, which will
help me because I will be more prepared.
In my experiment, I will try to optimize the amount of information about the paper aero plane so that, I will make the most of the density of
information that I will use within my experimental video so that I don’t run out of things to say within the 2 minutes time cap of my bird feed
video and so that I produce the most helpful experiment, linguistically with my narration and my camera shots, via my narration so that I can
achieve a desirable grade for my experiment and so that I can gain an understanding and technical skill of how to produce a pleasurable &
informative sounding narration for my target demographics and for my bird feeding video beyond this experiment.
In terms of what I will be narrating over, I will be narrating over my clips of me making a paper plane in my experiment because its relevant to
process and principles of what some of my camera work and videography would be like for my factual web series video which will allow me to be
more prepared and knowledgeable in the lead up since, for my factual web series, I will be about bird feeding garden birds in the form of a
narrated & visual guide. I will be obtaining these video clips via iPhone recordings so that I can export high quality landscape videos for my
footage.
When in post for my experiment, I will potential be adding subtle sound effects when there is transitioning points within the video and also to
emphasis certain parts of my narration in my experiment so that it makes my experiment sound more lively and entertaining, which is a good
aspect to explore when in post-production for the main product of a project because then once I've learnt how to successfully produce
entertaining sound effects I can then, more consistently and efficiently apply them to my product. The same is also relevant to that of music
because I will need to carefully place tracks over and between narrations in a fashion that isn’t too obnoxious in the outcome but not too
minimalistic to the point, in a way, where there’s not much that it contributes towards in the experiment, thus meaning I will need to experiment
with the audio editing to find the right balance of sounds.
3. When experimenting, I will be recording with my iPhone because iPhones have an efficient sound quality when in an environment where the is no
wind and any exterior sounds in the background. I will try a variety of recording styles to find the best fit recording that creates the best outcome
for my experiment. Recording styles that I will be experimenting with will be different surface placements, soft and solid surfaces, and handheld
recording verses static recording to see which has the best sound quality. Also I will be using a small, echoless room to record in so that there is
no echo to potentially disrupt the sound recording and since I can digitally add reverb and echo onto the mp3 there is no need for the room,
contextually for the experiment I am aiming to produce my factual video over wildlife, thus meaning that a constant echoing voice wouldn't fit as
comfortably as a more softer, more intermit voice would for a narration, which is why I will be pursuing that style of speaking in my experiment so
that I can be more prepared from this experiment and if for section I would like for an echo to be included I could add an echo effect in Premier
Pro but if I would record in a room with echo, I wouldn’t be able to reverse it very easily in post-production.
My voice in the recording will be soft and articulate so that even for people who aren’t necessarily major fans of the topic, can be drawn to the
narration of what is being discussed in the audio of the video like the likes of David Attenborough and Bob Ross, a lot of their audience isn’t
usually the biggest fans of their chosen art and products, in a sense, but like the authenticity of what they produce and how they do it in the
unique way they formulate it in. However, if my audience is a already fan of the general topic of my narration then it’s an even more of an
entertaining bonus for the listeners and the viewers experience of the product. This style of recording is with a softer tonality, which is why I will
be experimenting the best I can to make the sound quality high and the harshness at a minimum.
The position of the distance I speak from the camera in correlation to the distance of the microphone would preferably need to be close to the
recording input, enough so that my voice sounds as crisp as possible so that I get maximum quality for my narrated video so that I can form the
transformative steppingstone of understanding about how to use audio recording devices to contribute towards my factual bird feeding web
series. Also I should speak from my stomach and sit up straight so that I can project and reach my vocal potential because speaking form the
stomach is the best way of getting a clear and the purest voice out, so that I can develop on my weak point of narrating in my experimental paper
plane tutorial video.

4. Experimental analysis
Within my experiment I decided to make a paper plane tutorial because it was an easy and useful demo to be experimental with since I could
focus more easily on the exterior elements that weren’t specifically relevant to making a paper plane but that could be contributed towards
applications that could be important of gaining positive outcomes for my factual video, thus meaning it was helpful experience going through
this experiment because I’ve understood the structures that we’re needed to be built to make a more stable and well produced video. Such as
going through the stresses of attempting to record my experiment footage with my iPhone whilst stabilized on a tripod with bluetac, which
cause my phone to fall three times and caused an unsatisfying constant pan, which make me have to do extra editing in Premier to fix the
downward pan with the transform effect so that I could counteract the camera movement, which worked well from post production. When I
was in post production, I decided to add subtitles, that resulted in a successful outcome but it was very tricky and difficult to get the subtitles
because the mechanism of action to layer text onto the video footage is harder on some versions of Premier Pro, such as the one that I used
for my experiment, then others, since I ventured through a lot of glitches, a Premier Pro crash, that I forgot to save before, that I have learnt
from since getting back into this academic year and generally the process can be lengthy as well. Although in my experiment, the subtitles
we’re great in the final edit of the experiment, for my factual video I will prepare and construct an efficient way of adding subtitles to my video
by formulating a folder to store all the quotes from my script, so that I can have more time for sound and other visual effects that should have
more time spent on them due to they’re effectiveness of amplifying elements of a video by making it more entertaining.
If I had to do this experiment again I would have focused on getting the best framed shots, at the right camera distance and position, primarily
because then visually it would be a much better tutorial since you could more clearly see what would be happening on the screen of me
showing the audience how to create a paper plane.
5. The sound production within my experiment was a useful venture leading up to my product because
it refreshed my knowledge about how to sync sounds to the video and I learnt more about how to
manipulate sound to fit the room size via reverb. As well tweaks to the low pass and high pass, which
I used at points where I felt like subtlety should be used so that the sound synergies well with the
intensity of what was going on in the video. Fluctuation of intensity, didn't meet a great deal of
demand of audio editing at all, which resulted in a state of calmness through the exported
experimental video. But if I didn't try then I would have never known the outcome, which is what I
always try to do in experiments so that I can expand my creativity, learn new things and learn from
things regardless of if they work will or not in an experiment.
The best thing about experiments is the freedom in knowing that you gain a lot from the failures
because consequently you learn what to do better next time and how to avoid what had previously
led to that mishap of a pursuit.
I added an uplifting copyright free song into my experiment which worked will by filling in those
empty sound voids that sometimes came in the video awkwardly without the background music
because it would feel too stripped back and boring for a minimalistic tutorial. Especially since a great
number of people find it hard to concentrate without efficient amounts of audible stimuli when
watching a video because for many without music where there could be music, makes for a less
entertaining video in some circumstances such as this.
At the end of the video I formulate a clever duet of the same sound that cuts in and out as I express
the outro. The sequences of which I used, worked so well because the sound is played after I say the
primary outro, then after the pause and then the secondary outro. What makes this so good is that
the sound is positive, which reflects the success that myself and the audience feels after completing
and/or learning about my tutorial.
