1. Question 7:
Looking back at your preliminary task,
what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
2. Intro:
• During the production of the preliminary task and the
final product I have learned a few new techniques and
improved some others which I will be talking about in
this evaluation e.g. :
• Focus pull
• Use of angles
• Match on action shot
• 180ᵒ rules
• Editing techniques and use of adobe products
• Colour correction
• Camera work
3. Point 1: Focus pull
• The focus pull is an example of a techniques used in
both the preliminary task and the final product
• The focus pull was used in the preliminary to show
the change in focus in the scene for Hector to the
people in the background talking about hector. This
was the first time I had used a focus pull and
although it worked at the end it slightly blurred again
so in the final product I ensured that this was not the
case by leaving it once a clear image was formed.
5. Point 2: Use of angles
• In both the preliminary and the final the use
of angles was used to describe the
character, high angle for Hector to show
weakness and low angle for the detective to
show control. The use of this in the
preliminary did help when creating the final
product as, although polar opposites, it was
used in the same way so could be used as
practise for the real thing.
6.
7. Point 3: Match on action shot
• The match on action shot was something I felt
comfortable using prior to my preliminary as I
had already used it previously in a production
in GCSE. Because of this it did not take much
adjustment however the match on action shot
in the prelim was a slower pace than any
previous m/o/a shot I had done which helped
greatly as the pace of the final would also
have a low pace.
9. Point 4: 180ᵒ rule
• The 180ᵒ rule was obligatory to put in the
preliminary so it was rushed in at the last
minute and did not really add anything to it
and was not done very well. That being said
when it came to the final product I was very
aware of how to conduct a 180ᵒ shot and in
the final product it was actually included from
the start and was of much higher quality.
11. Point 5: Editing techniques and use of
adobe products
• In the final product I created a title using adobe
after effects and Photoshop, something I had
learned after creating the preliminary, In both
however I used titles during the product in the
preliminary they where used to break up each
scene and in the final product they formed the
credits. Use of titles was a new concept and from
the preliminary I learned how to add them in as
well as how to pair them with cross fades to
increase the continuity of the piece both of which
were used in the final product.
14. Point 6: Colour correction
• In my preliminary I used colour correction to set the
mood of the feature for example in the morning
scene I increased the levels of blue in order to
remove the lights yellow which imply happiness
juxtaposing the tone of the scene. This was
important to do as in the final product colour
correction would be needed to make the scenes with
the murderer darker without having to remove
lighting making it difficult to see.
16. Point 7: Camera work
• Most of the shots in “Hector’s day off” were
static shots of either high angles (to show the
fragility of Hector) and mid shots to show some
scenery around Hector whilst he was still the
focal point, to convey the mundanity of his life.
This being the case it allowed me to get some
hands on experience with the tripod and practise
some shots such as panning. This was a great
help when it came to producing the final piece as
I had already learnt all I needed to know in the
preliminary.
