3. Experiment 1- Kaleidoscope Effect
I started by watching a tutorial about how to make this effect, which can be
found here: https://youtu.be/N-QX1ntllj8. First I added a mirror effect to my
video and then I havled x axis value in the reflection centre to relocate the
kaleidoscope's centre to the middle of the screen. Then I copy and paste this
effect five times and adjust the angle of reflection on each them. This process
was mainly trial and error of adjusting until I got a good looking kaleidoscope. I
used a wide shot as I knew that this would mean the footage would be varied
enough to make multiple patterns in the kaleidoscope. The weakness of this
technique is that when I make the kaleidoscope is that it doesn't fill the entirity
of the screen so I have to scale up the video clip which decreases the video
quality. I don’t think I will be able to use the kaledioscope in my factual project
but I will consider using it in my FMP. After finishing this process I then began
to work on colour correction of the clip. I used the Three-Way Color Correction
effect to do this and I changed the colour of the shadows, midtones, and
highlights. I altered the Exposure, Gamma, and Pedestal of the image and used
keyframes to alternate the amount in which these channel would affect the
video at certain points in time. I used this technique to a sort of strobe effect
whilst still being able to see the original video. I also sped up the clip by 300%
by right clicking the video and selecting the duration tab.
4. Experiment 2-Tint/Color Key
• I the next shot I have the Tint effect which enables me to first make the
image black and white, and then I can pick a color to replace the black
which a different colour and white with a different colour. I combined this
with the Color Key effect which deletes a chosen colour from the video, in
this case it was purple. I placed another clip underneath so that when the
purple appears in the video the clip underneath is shown. I used a cross
zoom transition on both of these layers to zoom into the bottom layer clip
and I made the opacity of the top clip 0%. I will probably used this
transition in my documentary as it looks quiet dramatic.
• In the vending machine scene I experimented with the different opacitity
blending modes. For the first shot I used the Pin Lighting blend mode at about
60% opacity with a 720-Narrow lens distortion to make the top layer look like a
hologram. In the second shot I used a hard mix blend mode.
5. Experiment 3-Photo combined with video
• I inserted a image of a hand and a phone into photoshop. I cut out the screen
of the phone using the Cut Tool and replaced this empty area with a video
clip when I imported the image into Premiere Pro. I resized the stale of the
clip and use the crop effect so that none of edges of the video are sticking out
the sides of the phone. I added the mosaic effect and increased the contrast
of the video inside the phone so that it looks similar to what a video record
from a phone would look like.
6. Experiment 4-Masking
This is the tutorial I used to learn about
masking: https://youtu.be/9RzuPgBOTSw. Halfway through the loop
sequence I used a opacitiy mask to cut out the sky and reveal a video
underneath. I was pretty easy to mask the out because the outline of the top
of the building was easy to see and didn't have a lot curves. I used the draw
tool to created the outline of my sky box and then I inverted the mask so that
the mask area was cut out of the video. At one point in the loop a piper
travels in front of the building which meant I had to make a second mask
around this pipe and then I un-inverted this mask. After the pipe leaves the
shot I turned the opacity down to 0% otherwise there would be a large pipe
shaped chuck of the sky visible. Even though this is an effective technique it
can be unpredictable when using multiple masks. If I use masks in my
documentary they will probably used for transitions instead of
skyboxes.
