How I represented social
groups in my production
• A representation of a social group
is a way of representing a group of
people through stereotypes of what
the group is assumed to be from an
outsider perspective, e.g. a person
from a lower class background would
be poorly educated.
Character 1 (Burglar)

•

The burglar was intended to be viewed as a juvenile
delinquent a negative representation usually associated
with young men. The character being a young male abides
by the stereotype that criminals are generically male
and the teenagers in hoods are even more likely to be
the culprit for the crime. One media techniques we used
to show this was the mise en scene. The character wore
entirely black (which connotes misdoing and sin) and
have most of his head and face covered to give the
impression of mistrust.
Character 2 (Detective)

• Another social group represented in our media
video is shown through the detective. The
detective is a man which follows the stereotype
that male occupy the higher up jobs like a
detective and also the fact that he is wearing a
suit suggests the fact that he is important. One
media techniques we used to show this was the mise
en scene. (In the shot above) he is viewed in a
low angle shot which also connotes importance in
society and in the narrative.
Character 3 (Murderer)

• Another social group represented in our media
video is shown through the murderer. The murderer
is a man which follows the stereotype that males
are generally the more aggressive and therefore
more likely to commit a violent crime. Also he is
seen (only briefly) wearing a jumpsuit which
suggests that he is from a working class
background, similarly to the burglar showing the
stereotype that the lower classes are more likely
to commit a crime than those from a privileged
background. One media techniques we used to show
this was the mise en scene (lighting). In the only
shot he is seen in the environment occupies low
key lighting which connotes fear or danger.
Conclusion
• The stereotypes I have drawn on to create the characters in
the opening sequence may have an impact on audience
(either good or bad) as It stereotypes some of the lower
classes as violent and youth as delinquents which may
alienate some of the audience, however on the other hand
the reason stereotypes are used in film is so a social group
can be easily identified via there appearance or there
mannerisms so the negative stereotypes may allow for a
more universal identification for those who may not be
able to identify them through other aspects. Upon
reflection the stereotypes used are unfair to those they
represent however in a three minute opening sequence it is
difficult to create a countertype without confusion or the
appearance of a undeveloped character.
