1. Media AS Evaluation Task 6
What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this project?
2. Equipment…
When I first started filming for my film opening I just used a digital SLR camera which was
good for capturing the footage but when I watched it all back the sound was really unclear
and there was quite a lot of background noise. I then thought I would use a microphone
that plugs straight into the camera and screws on top, this made a big difference to the
quality of sound and made the opening sound a bit more professional. However when I
was editing some of the footage I realised there was still some strong background noise due
to the wind so I re-filmed the footage using the wind shield on the microphone. This made
it even better and the sound quality was really good. Throughout the filming process I used
a tripod so that my footage was not only steady and straight on but I was able to work at
different levels. The different levels helped me achieve a good variety of shot types like low
and high angle and also camera movements like camera pans and tracks.
3. Technologies…
When editing my opening I used quite a few different technologies. Firstly when editing all my
footage together I used a programme called adobe premier pro which was really good because
it has a lot of different tools available and is quite straight forward to use. I just imported all
my footage, chose what ones I wanted to use and then put them in to the sequence. I used
quite a few different fades such as fade to black and cross fades when putting multiple clips
together. There is a lot more effects that I could have used on the footage but I kept it quite
simple like films that I researched. When creating my titles for the opening I used another
Adobe programme called After Effects which was also a really good technology to have. I just
chose the colour of my background and typed what I wanted, changed the colour and font of
the text and it was done. There is a lot of different effects that I could have used, like how the
text enters the frame or exits. I just selected a simple fade in and out because that is what the
titles from existing films use. I think my titles were really effective and so was my editing, I
wouldn’t have been able to make it half as good without these technologies to help me.
4. Keeping On Track…
When filming my footage I kept thinking back to my storyboard to make sure I was sticking
with the shot types and framing. Although I did change my storyline a bit in the end like not
using a car, I still used quite a few of the shot types that I originally planned. I added quite a
few when filming to make the opening look more professional and not basic. I think overall
you can see when looking at my storyboard, how I ended up with the opening I did.
What Have I learnt?
I have learned quite a bit from the process of creating my film opening. Even though I used
some of the Adobe programmes when editing my GCSE work, I did learn how to make use of
more of the tools available and how to use them more effectively. I also learned how to use a
equipment like a microphone and boom which definitely helped with the overall finished
product. I think overall this process has helped me use already familiar technologies more
effectively and more confidently.
