talks about
her meet-
ing with
PM Modi
post her re-
turn from
Rio Para-
lympics in 2016. She re-
calls how in her career
of 10 years and years of
winning medals, it was
the very first time when
the Prime Minister of
India had invited her to
be part of a Meet and
Greet ceremony
. PM
Modi called her by her
name and said “Deepa,
in all your lectures,
speeches and interac-
tion with other players,
it is your positivity that
comes to the fore. I my-
self watch your videos
many a time and I feel
positive.” I believe noth-
ing can make for a more
memorable
moment
than when the Prime
Minister himself ac-
knowledges your inner
strength and courage,
says Deepa.
It was after Tokyo
2020 Paralympics
when all the ath-
letes met Prime
Minister Modi af-
ter returning
home with 19
medals. I had
participated not
just as a sport-
sperson but as a
team leader too in
those Paralym-
pics. Modiji supported,
blessed and encouraged
all the athletes before
they left for the event.
The medals, which we
won through Modiji’s
support and our hard
work were instrumen-
tal in changing the way
people perceive disabil-
ities. PM Modi’s en-
couragement
paved the
way for Paralympics
to
be treated like main-
stream sports in India.
He met all of us with
great love, affection and
appreciated our efforts.
He took time out for us
generously
from his
tight schedule- a PM’s
time is always invalua-
ble - and those golden
moments will remain
itched forever in the
hearts and minds of
our young athletes. The
best part about this was
that PM Modi had de-
tailed information
of
each and every player.
He just wasn’t aware of
the personal lives of the
athletes but he also fol-
lowed them religiously
throughout their Tokyo
tour so much so that he
knew what exactly the
players were doing at
what time, what their
likes and dislikes are,
much like a family
member would do. This
differentiate
s PM Modi
from all other leaders
India has ever seen- his
keen interest in people,
their problems and as-
pirations and a burning
desire to help everyone
reach their goals. Such
encourageme
nt coming
from the PM completely
changes the psyche of
the athletes and they
are filled with the
fervour of patriot-
ism, the desire to
bring home a
medal!
It is obvi-
ousthatwhen
the PM him-
self is interact-
ing with play-
ers, there is this
inevitable focus
on governance.
The players share
n u m e r o u s
thoughts with him and
they include feedback
the facilities, a look into
their problems, the pro-
cess of preparing for
tournaments
, and when
our PM takes cogni-
zance of such issues, it
does not only encourage
the players but it helps
in bringing the country
together and transform-
ing the mindset towards
the disabled.
I thank our PM for
mentioningmyachieve-
ments in his Sept 25,
2016 Mann Ki Baat
when he said that he
will never forget my
words I spoke after
I won the silver
medal in Rio.
I had said
“ w i t h
this medal I have de-
feated my handicap”. I
believe Modiji found it
energizing and I thank
him for recognizing me
for all my efforts.
I clearly recall one
very special moment
with PM Modi when I
experienced
how much
he cares about his coun-
trymen. It was a recep-
tion on August 15 at
Rashtrapati
Bhawan
and I had the honour to
be a part of it too. When
PM Modi came towards
us, he began by interact-
ing one by one with all
the athletes. We already
know how well-versed
he is at all times with
the personal and profes-
sional details of each
and every player. At the
same time, his aura is so
magnetic, that people
tend to flock to him nat-
urally
.Asheapproached
me, suddenly a lot of
people came towards us
to greet him. In their ex-
citement, they some-
how overlooked the fact
that I was sitting there,
at the centre of the com-
motion. And all of them
starting reaching out to
the PM over me which
was a cause of discom-
fort for me.
But then the most un-
expected happened. PM
Modi himself, with both
hishands,createdakind
of barrier around me as
if trying to shield me in
that commotion.
And
then, being the beloved
brother of every woman
in the country
, he placed
hishandonmybackand
told everyone to be cau-
tious. He said “Deepa
has undergone several
surgeries and her back
has innumerable
stitch-
es. Please do not lean
over her. She will get
hurt.” At that moment,
tears swelled in my eyes
when I heard the PM say
these words so full of
empathy, compassion
and concern. I felt it was
totallyremarkablethata
he should even remem-
ber that Deepa is strug-
gling with a spinal cord
injury and that the
Prime Minister should
try and protect her from
bodily harm.
I was touched and
overwhelmed
by this ex-
pression of concern for
me by PM Modi. I have
had the privilege of
meeting and interacting
with PM Modi on nu-
merous occasions over a
decade. In fact there was
one instance when he
himself wheeled my
wheelchair to the stage
during a programme!
I
got a call from PMO one
day that said “Deepaji
you need to reach
Ahmedabad
for an
event.” It was at a very
shortnoticebutformeit
was a matter of great
pride and honour as I
was being invited at the
inauguration
of Trans-
Stadia, which is one of
the most advanced inte-
grated multi-purpos
e
stadiums in the country
.
Some of the finest ath-
letesof thecountrywere
invited to this event but
PM Modi came up to all
of us and said “This line
up of great achievers
wouldneverbecomplete
without a woman, and
without a disabled.”
And then he wheeled me
onto the stage prior to
his address. What made
theeveningmorememo-
rable was that during
histhreeminutespeech,
PM Modi again ad-
dressed the youth of the
country and said that if
someonereallyneedsin-
spiration to be able to
overcomethechallenges
of life, he or she must
definitely read Deepa’s
biography once. She is a
living example of grit
and resilience.
That day to this mo-
ment, it has been my
endeavour to live up to
the faith, concern and
respect PM Modi har-
bours for me. I would
never want that trust to
break and at the same
time I want to continue
to contribute in the
making of my New In-
dia that cares for its
women and its disabled.

KEJRIWAL MEETS LG OVER MONSOON PREPARATIONS
Depts asked to use
800 recharge pits
Departments
were also
directed to

dysfunctional
tube wells
into water
recharging,
retention pits
New Delhi (Agencies):
After holding a review
meeting on the ongoing
monsoon preparedness,
Delhi Chief Minis-
ter Arvind Kejriwal and
Lieutenant Governor
Vinay Saxena asked the
concerned departments
to operationalise re-
charge pits, convert dys-
functional tube wells
into water recharging
and retention pits.
According to informa-
tion shared by the Raj
Niwas, recharge pits
situated at around 800
locations, owned by dif-
ferent agencies, were
identified by DJB. Civic
agencies like PWD and
MCD would undertake
the work themselves
while the DJB would do
the work for other agen-
cies.
The departments
were also directed to
convert the dysfunction-
al/abandoned and
sealed tube wells into
water recharging and
retention pits. Besides,
directions were also is-
sued to dredge and deep-
en around 700 water
bodies to a depth of at
least 2 metres and the Ir-
rigation and Flood Con-
trol (IFC) department
was directed to make
the catchment area free
of encroachment.
New Delhi (PTI): In a
bid to prevent fires at
dumpsites and the subse-
quent deterioration of
air quality in the nation-
al capital, Delhi’s pollu-
tion control body has di-
rected the Municipal
Corporation of Delhi
(MCD) to ensure that or-
ganic waste from slaugh-
terhouses and fish mar-
kets do not end up in the
landfill sites.
It has also asked the
MCD to ensure that in-
dustrial as well as elec-
tronic waste, including
lithium batteries, is not
dumped at the landfill
sites. The organic waste
dumped in a landfill pro-
duces methane when it
rots. In hot weather con-
ditions, methane catches
fire spontaneously and
the blaze spreads as it
feeds on combustible ma-
terial like textiles and
plastics.
In an order issued on
June 10, the pollution
control body asked the
MCD to install methane
gas detectors (on down-
wind side) at the dump-
sites so that areas with
high methane concentra-
tion can be identified and
preventive action be un-
dertaken.
“Further temperature
at windrows to be moni-
tored with non-contact
infrared thermometer
(as used for monitoring
human body tempera-
ture under COVID cir-
cumstances) and records
be maintained for any
major deviations. The
temperature is to be in
the range of 35 degrees
Celsius to 59 degrees Cel-
sius. Treated leachate/
water to be sprayed on
the waste when rise in
temperature is ob-
served,” the order read.
Delhi has reported five
massive fires at its land-
fill sites this year — three
at Ghazipur and two at
Bhalswa.
The fire that broke out
at Bhalswa on April 26
kept on raging for more
than 10 days, exacerbat-
ing the already polluted
air in nearby areas.
New Delhi (Agencies):
Respite from heat is in
store for Delhi with a
western disturbance
likely to bring rain to
the city over the next
six days with light rain
and gusty winds expect-
ed Wednesday evening,
according to the India
Meteorological Depart-
ment (IMD).
The maximum tem-
perature is expected to
be around 40 degrees
Celsius. On Wednesday
morning, the minimum
temperature was re-
corded as 26.2 degrees
Celsius, two degrees be-
low normal. Over the
past three days, the
minimum temperature
was over 30 degrees Cel-
sius.
Light rain and thun-
dershowers are expect-
ed in the city till Tues-
day next week, the IMD
forecast said, with the
maximum tempera-
ture expected to dip to
34 degrees Celsius by
Monday.
On Tuesday, the max-
imum temperature was
recorded as 38.9 de-
grees Celsius, normal
for this time of the
year. The maximum
temperature had been
above normal for sev-
eral weeks before Tues-
day.
New Delhi (PTI): Sev-
eral market and trader
associations in the capi-
tal have expressed hope
that the ‘Whole shopping
festival’ envisioned by
the Delhi government
will boost sales and help
in bringing business
back to the pre-Covid
level.
The traders said they
are optimistic that such
a festival will also help in
increasing employment
opportunities.
On Monday, Deputy
Chief Minister Manish
Sisodia announced that
the Delhi government
will organise a ‘Whole-
sale Shopping Festival’
to celebrate the iconic
wholesale markets in the
capital and to give them
a new identity across the
world.
Addressing the repre-
sentatives from whole-
sale markets, Sisodia had
said, “This is a unique
feature of Delhi that it
has wholesale markets
for almost everything in-
cluding textiles, elec-
tronics,spices,andbooks
etc. Our aim is to pro-
mote the business of
these wholesale markets
and increase employ-
ment opportunities in
these markets.”
New Delhi (PTI):

(UGC) has asked all
universities and affili-
ated colleges to en-
sure the early nomi-
nation of ‘Gender
Champions’ from
among students who
will lead efforts to
make campuses
more inclusive and
spread gender sensiti-
sation.
The apex regulato-
ry body for higher ed-
ucation in India has
also asked the institu-
tions to fill up the on-
line compliance de-
tails.
“In order to in-
crease the outreach
for creating an envi-
ronment that fosters
equal treatment, the
government envisag-
es Gender Champions
in all educational in-
stitutions across the
country as responsi-
ble leaders,” UGC Sec-
retary Rajnish Jain
said in a letter to Vice
Chancellors and col-
lege principals.
Gender Champions
can be both boys and
girls above 16 years of
age enrolled in educa-
tional institutions
and will facilitate an
enabling environ-
ment within their
schools, colleges, and
academic institutions
where girls are treat-
ed with dignity and
respect, he said.
New Delhi (PTI): Ob-
serving that an individ-
ual cannot have the
might to fight the hefty
corporations, the Delhi
High Court has said
that the Municipal Cor-
poration of Delhi as a

ATTENDEES
New Delhi (PTI): A
head constable has writ-
ten to Delhi Police com-
missioner Rakesh Astha-
na urging him to take
steps towards road safety
and ensure that police
personnel follow traffic
rules. Sandeep Kumar
who is currently posted
at the Patel Nagar police
station of the Central
district, said he had
learnt through an RTI
that 228 Delhi Police per-
sonnel from various
units up to the rank of
ACP were killed in road
accidents from 2010 to
2021. Kumar also men-
tioned that he is injured
twice in road accidents
at Daryganj and Moti Na-
gar and since then has
been involved in raising
awareness about road
safety and use of hel-
mets.
“It is requested that
important steps should
be taken so that police
personnel adhere to traf-
fic rules and everyone
remains safe and follow-
ing the ideals of Shanti,
sewage and nyay, we can
fulfil our responsibilities
and make Delhi a pleas-
ant place,” Kumar said.
Claiming that the num-
bers of police personnel
who died is more than
those killed by terrorists
or by criminals, Kumar
in the letter written ear-
lier this month, said the
majority of those who
died were constables.
The policeman also cited
a 2021 order by the then
special commissioner of
police, Traffic, Mukesh
Chander, flagging viola-
tions of traffic rules by
police personnel.

talks about
her meet-
ing with
PM Modi
post her re-
turn from
Rio Para-
lympics in 2016. She re-
calls how in her career
of 10 years and years of
winning medals, it was
the very first time when
the Prime Minister of
India had invited her to
be part of a Meet and
Greet ceremony
. PM
Modi called her by her
name and said “Deepa,
in all your lectures,
speeches and interac-
tion with other players,
it is your positivity that
comes to the fore. I my-
self watch your videos
many a time and I feel
positive.” I believe noth-
ing can make for a more
memorable moment
than when the Prime
Minister himself ac-
knowledges your inner
strength and courage,
says Deepa.
It was after Tokyo
2020 Paralympics
when all the ath-
letes met Prime
Minister Modi af-
ter returning
home with 19
medals. I had
participated not
just as a sport-
sperson but as a
team leader too in
those Paralym-
pics. Modiji supported,
blessed and encouraged
all the athletes before
they left for the event.
The medals, which we
won through Modiji’s
support and our hard
work were instrumen-
tal in changing the way
people perceive disabil-
ities. PM Modi’s en-
couragement paved the
way for Paralympics to
be treated like main-
stream sports in India.
He met all of us with
great love, affection and
appreciated our efforts.
He took time out for us
generously from his
tight schedule- a PM’s
time is always invalua-
ble - and those golden
moments will remain
itched forever in the
hearts and minds of
our young athletes. The
best part about this was
that PM Modi had de-
tailed information of
each and every player.
He just wasn’t aware of
the personal lives of the
athletes but he also fol-
lowed them religiously
throughout their Tokyo
tour so much so that he
knew what exactly the
players were doing at
what time, what their
likes and dislikes are,
much like a family
member would do. This
differentiates PM Modi
from all other leaders
India has ever seen- his
keen interest in people,
their problems and as-
pirations and a burning
desire to help everyone
reach their goals. Such
encouragement coming
from the PM completely
changes the psyche of
the athletes and they
are filled with the
fervour of patriot-
ism, the desire to
bring home a
medal!
It is obvi-
ousthatwhen
the PM him-
self is interact-
ing with play-
ers, there is this
inevitable focus
on governance.
The players share
n u m e r o u s
thoughts with him and
they include feedback
the facilities, a look into
their problems, the pro-
cess of preparing for
tournaments, and when
our PM takes cogni-
zance of such issues, it
does not only encourage
the players but it helps
in bringing the country
together and transform-
ing the mindset towards
the disabled.
I thank our PM for
mentioningmyachieve-
ments in his Sept 25,
2016 Mann Ki Baat
when he said that he
will never forget my
words I spoke after
I won the silver
medal in Rio.
I had said
“ w i t h
this medal I have de-
feated my handicap”. I
believe Modiji found it
energizing and I thank
him for recognizing me
for all my efforts.
I clearly recall one
very special moment
with PM Modi when I
experienced how much
he cares about his coun-
trymen. It was a recep-
tion on August 15 at
Rashtrapati Bhawan
and I had the honour to
be a part of it too. When
PM Modi came towards
us, he began by interact-
ing one by one with all
the athletes. We already
know how well-versed
he is at all times with
the personal and profes-
sional details of each
and every player. At the
same time, his aura is so
magnetic, that people
tend to flock to him nat-
urally
.Asheapproached
me, suddenly a lot of
people came towards us
to greet him. In their ex-
citement, they some-
how overlooked the fact
that I was sitting there,
at the centre of the com-
motion. And all of them
starting reaching out to
the PM over me which
was a cause of discom-
fort for me.
But then the most un-
expected happened. PM
Modi himself, with both
hishands,createdakind
of barrier around me as
if trying to shield me in
that commotion. And
then, being the beloved
brother of every woman
in the country
, he placed
hishandonmybackand
told everyone to be cau-
tious. He said “Deepa
has undergone several
surgeries and her back
has innumerable stitch-
es. Please do not lean
over her. She will get
hurt.” At that moment,
tears swelled in my eyes
when I heard the PM say
these words so full of
empathy, compassion
and concern. I felt it was
totallyremarkablethata
he should even remem-
ber that Deepa is strug-
gling with a spinal cord
injury and that the
Prime Minister should
try and protect her from
bodily harm.
I was touched and
overwhelmed by this ex-
pression of concern for
me by PM Modi. I have
had the privilege of
meeting and interacting
with PM Modi on nu-
merous occasions over a
decade. In fact there was
one instance when he
himself wheeled my
wheelchair to the stage
during a programme! I
got a call from PMO one
day that said “Deepaji
you need to reach
Ahmedabad for an
event.” It was at a very
shortnoticebutformeit
was a matter of great
pride and honour as I
was being invited at the
inauguration of Trans-
Stadia, which is one of
the most advanced inte-
grated multi-purpose
stadiums in the country
.
Some of the finest ath-
letesof thecountrywere
invited to this event but
PM Modi came up to all
of us and said “This line
up of great achievers
wouldneverbecomplete
without a woman, and
without a disabled.”
And then he wheeled me
onto the stage prior to
his address. What made
theeveningmorememo-
rable was that during
histhreeminutespeech,
PM Modi again ad-
dressed the youth of the
country and said that if
someonereallyneedsin-
spiration to be able to
overcomethechallenges
of life, he or she must
definitely read Deepa’s
biography once. She is a
living example of grit
and resilience.
That day to this mo-
ment, it has been my
endeavour to live up to
the faith, concern and
respect PM Modi har-
bours for me. I would
never want that trust to
break and at the same
time I want to continue
to contribute in the
making of my New In-
dia that cares for its
women and its disabled.

Presidential contest to define Cong’s political relevance!
Sharat K Verma
New Delhi: Even be-
fore giving somewhat of
a contest to the BJP in
presidential election,
the Congress party will
have to contest with
other political parties to
make itself heard. This
is so because the opposi-
tion parties are prepar-
ing to contest the elec-
tions by forming a non-
BJP and non-Congress
front. Even if a Third or
Federal Front is not
formed, opposition par-
ties are still trying to
field a common candi-
date and force the Con-
gress to support this op-
position alliance. On
the other hand Con-
gress is not ready to sup-
port the leader of other
party other than its own
party in any condition.
The Congress wants
that a presidential can-
didate fielded by it
should be supported
‘automatically’ by the
rest of the parties as
has been the case in the
past. That is why the
Congress has engaged
Mallikarjun Kharge in
this campaign.
On the other hand the
leaders of Mamata Ba-
nerjee,Chandrashekhar
Rao and Arvind Kejri-
wal’s parties are en-
gaged in different ef-
forts. Until a few days
ago, the Samajwadi Par-
ty National President
AkhileshYadavwasalso
taking initiative in this
matter. But he has been
embroiled in the by-elec-
tions to two Lok Sabha
seats in his state - Azam-
garh and Rampur. Both
the seats are of impor-
tantforhimasbothhave
been his party’s seats
and vacated by resigna-
tion. However, Mamata
Banerjee has called a
meeting of opposition
parties on Wednesday
.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi
Party MP Sanjay Singh
has gone to Mumbai to
meet Sharad Pawar. K
Chandrashekhar Rao
has already met Stalin,
Hemant Soren, Mamta
Banerjee, Arvind Kejri-
wal etc. So, the Congress
has yet to fight the battle
of deciding the candi-
datebeforetherealfight.
Meanwhile, Sonia Gan-
dhi’s health has deterio-
rated and Rahul Gandhi
is embroiled in ED’s in-
terrogation and in such
situation,Congressfinds
itself embroiled in a po-
litical ‘turf war’, the re-
sult of which will decide
thepoliticalfutureof the
grand-old party
.
Why Mallikarjun
Kharge?
The Congress wants
that a presidential
candidate fielded by it
should be supported
‘automatically’ by the
rest of the parties as
has been the case in the
past. That is why the
Congress has engaged

WHO to share
vaccines to stop
monkeypox
New Delhi: The World
Health Organisation
said it’s creating a new
vaccine-sharing mecha-
nism to stop the out-
break of monkeypox in
more than 30 countries
beyond Africa. The
move could result in the
U.N. health agency dis-
tributing scarce vaccine
doses to rich countries
that can otherwise af-
ford them. To some
health experts, the ini-
tiative potentially miss-
es the opportunity to
control monkeypox vi-

Expect telcos to buy spectrum
worth `1-1.1 lakh crore: Icra
New Delhi (PTI): The telecom industry is expected
to shell out around `1-1.1 lakh crore on the 5G

spectrum prices, Icra said but cautioned that sector
debt level is likely to rise with upcoming auctions.
Given the relaxed payment terms for the auction,
the upfront outgo is likely to be around `10,000
crore for the industry. “While telecom operators
consider reserve prices to be very high, nonethe-
less Icra expects telcos to buy spectrum worth
around Rs 1-1.1 lakh crore in these auctions, which
will be primarily towards developing 5G capabilities
but also plugging other gaps,” it said.

‘Shivpal Factor’ can hurt SP prospects in by-election!
Gyanendra Kumar Shukla
Lucknow: Eight years
ago, SP patriarch Mu-
layam Singh Yadav, who
was contesting from
Azamgarh parliamen-
tary seat, was apprehen-
sive about his victory in
the initial phase itself,
so he called his brother
Shivpal Singh Yadav
there.
The latter’s presence
not only strengthened
the SP
, but also ensured
Mulayam’s victory by a
huge margin of 3.60
lakhs in spite of the na-
tionwide pro-Modi
wave. Later, addressing
a meeting in Saifai, Mu-
layam Singh Yadav ad-
mitted candidly that the
Azamgarh election was
a close shave for him. He
creditedthemembersof
Saifai family, including
Shivpal Singh Yadav, for
the victory of that Lok
Sabha election. It is ob-
vious that Shivpal
proved his worth as an
excellentelectionorgan-
izer.
However, subsequent
developments led to a
deep rift between Shiv-
pal Singh Yadav and his
nephew, Akhilesh Ya-
dav. In the 2017 assembly
elections, SP chief Akh-
ilesh Yadav completely
sidelined Shivpal. De-
spite the alliance with
Congress in that elec-
tion, the party could not
even touch the mark of
fifty seats. It was be-
lieved that along with
the BJP wave, Shivpal’s
discontent also played a
role in the defeat of
Akhilesh’s party
.
In the backdrop of
Shivpal’s displeasure, in
the 2019 general elec-
tions, three members of
the Saifai family lost the
elections in SP’s bas-
tions. These included
DimpleYadavfromKan-
nauj, Akshay Yadav
from Firozabad and
Dharmendra Yadav
from Badaun.
Although Shivpal had
withdrawn the candida-
ture of his outfit PSPL
candidate Sunil Singh
Rathore from Kannauj
seat, the result of his an-
noyance was that Akh-
ilesh’s wife lost the elec-
tion by just twelve thou-
sand votes to BJP’s Sub-
rata Pathak. Subrata
was defeated by Dimple
in the 2014 elections by
nineteen thousand
votes. In Badaun, Dhar-
mendra Yadav, staunch
supporter of Akhilesh
in saifai clan, was de-
feated by BJP’s Sang-
hamitra Maurya by
26,000 votes, while Dhar-
mendra won by a mar-
gin of one lakh votes in
2014.
Shivpal Singh Yadav
himself apparently be-
came an obstacle in the
way of his nephew Ak-
shay Yadav, who regis-
tered a big victory in the
year 2014 from Firo-
zabad seat; Chandrasen
Jadaun of BJP won by
twenty eight thousand
votes.

Lucknow: As mercury
soars, political tempar-
tures are also on the
rise in Uttar Pradesh.
Months after the As-
sembly elections, the
focus has shifted to the
crucial Lok Sabha by-
polls in Azamgarh and
Rampur. The by-elec-
tion to the two seats is
scheduled for June 23.
The counting of votes
will be on June 26.
Both the seats are
considered the bas-
tions of the Samajwadi
Party (SP), one was
held by party president
Akhilesh Yadav and the
other by the party’s vet-
eran leader Azam
Khan.
The SP managed to
win the seats even as
BJP swept the 2019 Lok
Sabha polls in the state.
But, reported differ-
ences between the two
leaders, whose election
to the state Assembly
necessitated the by-
elections, may have im-
plications for the out-
come of the battle in
Rampur.
The SP won all 10 as-
sembly segments in
Azamgarh in this
year’s polls, one reason
why the seat is high on
BJP’s priority.

NARRATIVE, FIGHT TURNS TRIANGULAR Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath.
Lucknow: With Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati
aggressively trying to cash in on the resentment brewing
in the Muslim community over former BJP spokesperson
Nupur Sharma’s remarks against the Prophet and Yogi
Adityanath government’s “bulldozer justice” against those
involved in Friday violence, the prestigious Lok Sabha
byelection in Azamgarh has become interesting as the
fight has distinctly turned triangular. The Samajwadi Party
with its Yadav-Muslim combination has been desperately
trying to retain the seat which had fallen vacant after the
resignation of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. The SP has fielded
Yadav’s cousin Dharmendra Yadav who had lost 2019 Lok
Sabha election. But Mayawati, taking the fight aggressively
and making effort to make dent into SP’s well-entrenched
Muslim base, seems to have put spoke in SP’s plan.

DISPLEASURE ACT
New Delhi (PTI): The
UAE has ordered a sus-
pension of exports and
re-exports of wheat
and wheat flour origi-
nating from India for
four months, the Gulf
nation’s ministry of
economy said on
Wednesday.
The move follows
India banning the ex-
port of wheat last
month to check the
surge in local prices.
With this, Indian
wheat cannot be root-
ed to third countries
via the UAE.
The ban, which the
ministry called as
‘moratorium’, has been
imposed effective from
May 13 “in view of the
international develop-
ments that have affect-
ed trade flows”.
India had on May 14
banned wheat exports
except for those backed
by already issued let-
ters of credit (LCs) and
to countries seeking to
ensure food security.
Since then, it has al-
lowed shipments of
469,202 tonnes of wheat.
The United Arab Emir-
ates Ministry of Econo-
my said the ban “ap-
plies to all wheat varie-
ties namely hard, ordi-
nary and soft wheat
and wheat flour.”
In a statement said a
moratorium has been
imposed “on the ex-
port and re-export of
wheat and wheat flour
originating from the
Republic of India, in-
cluding free zones, for
a period of four
months starting from
May 13, 2022.”
This “decision
comes in view of the
international develop-
ments that have affect-
ed trade flows, and in
appreciation of the
solid and strategic re-
lations that bind the
UAE and India.
Especially after the
signing of the Compre-
hensive Economic
Partnership Agree-
ment between the two
countries and the In-
dian government’s ap-
proval to export wheat
to the UAE for domes-
tic consumption.”
Ayodhya (PTI): Maha-

Shiv Sena leader Aadi-
tya Thackeray, who on
Wednesday paid a visit
to Ayodhya, said his ar-
rival at the temple town
is not associated with
politics but he is here to

however said that cen-
tral agencies have

tisement literature. He
was responding to a
question on the En-
forcement Directorate
quizzing Congress lead-
er Rahul Gandhi.
His visit comes at a
time when the BJP
, Shiv
Sena’s former ally, has
been questioning the
party’s commitment to
Hindutva. Earlier, head
of Maharashtra
Navnirman Sena Raj
Thackeray had an-
nounced his visit to
Ayodhya on June 5, but
was cancelled later.

tre of faith in India. In

  • 1. eepa Malik talks about her meet- ing with PM Modi post her re- turn from Rio Para- lympics in 2016. She re- calls how in her career of 10 years and years of winning medals, it was the very first time when the Prime Minister of India had invited her to be part of a Meet and Greet ceremony . PM Modi called her by her name and said “Deepa, in all your lectures, speeches and interac- tion with other players, it is your positivity that comes to the fore. I my- self watch your videos many a time and I feel positive.” I believe noth- ing can make for a more memorable moment than when the Prime Minister himself ac- knowledges your inner strength and courage, says Deepa. It was after Tokyo 2020 Paralympics when all the ath- letes met Prime Minister Modi af- ter returning home with 19 medals. I had participated not just as a sport- sperson but as a team leader too in those Paralym- pics. Modiji supported, blessed and encouraged all the athletes before they left for the event. The medals, which we won through Modiji’s support and our hard work were instrumen- tal in changing the way people perceive disabil- ities. PM Modi’s en- couragement paved the way for Paralympics to be treated like main- stream sports in India. He met all of us with great love, affection and appreciated our efforts. He took time out for us generously from his tight schedule- a PM’s time is always invalua- ble - and those golden moments will remain itched forever in the hearts and minds of our young athletes. The best part about this was that PM Modi had de- tailed information of each and every player. He just wasn’t aware of the personal lives of the athletes but he also fol- lowed them religiously throughout their Tokyo tour so much so that he knew what exactly the players were doing at what time, what their likes and dislikes are, much like a family member would do. This differentiate s PM Modi from all other leaders India has ever seen- his keen interest in people, their problems and as- pirations and a burning desire to help everyone reach their goals. Such encourageme nt coming from the PM completely changes the psyche of the athletes and they are filled with the fervour of patriot- ism, the desire to bring home a medal! It is obvi- ousthatwhen the PM him- self is interact- ing with play- ers, there is this inevitable focus on governance. The players share n u m e r o u s thoughts with him and they include feedback the facilities, a look into their problems, the pro- cess of preparing for tournaments , and when our PM takes cogni- zance of such issues, it does not only encourage the players but it helps in bringing the country together and transform- ing the mindset towards the disabled. I thank our PM for mentioningmyachieve- ments in his Sept 25, 2016 Mann Ki Baat when he said that he will never forget my words I spoke after I won the silver medal in Rio. I had said “ w i t h this medal I have de- feated my handicap”. I believe Modiji found it energizing and I thank him for recognizing me for all my efforts. I clearly recall one very special moment with PM Modi when I experienced how much he cares about his coun- trymen. It was a recep- tion on August 15 at Rashtrapati Bhawan and I had the honour to be a part of it too. When PM Modi came towards us, he began by interact- ing one by one with all the athletes. We already know how well-versed he is at all times with the personal and profes- sional details of each and every player. At the same time, his aura is so magnetic, that people tend to flock to him nat- urally .Asheapproached me, suddenly a lot of people came towards us to greet him. In their ex- citement, they some- how overlooked the fact that I was sitting there, at the centre of the com- motion. And all of them starting reaching out to the PM over me which was a cause of discom- fort for me. But then the most un- expected happened. PM Modi himself, with both hishands, createdakind of barrier around me as if trying to shield me in that commotion. And then, being the beloved brother of every woman in the country , he placed hishandonmybackand told everyone to be cau- tious. He said “Deepa has undergone several surgeries and her back has innumerable stitch- es. Please do not lean over her. She will get hurt.” At that moment, tears swelled in my eyes when I heard the PM say these words so full of empathy, compassion and concern. I felt it was totallyremarkablethata he should even remem- ber that Deepa is strug- gling with a spinal cord injury and that the Prime Minister should try and protect her from bodily harm. I was touched and overwhelmed by this ex- pression of concern for me by PM Modi. I have had the privilege of meeting and interacting with PM Modi on nu- merous occasions over a decade. In fact there was one instance when he himself wheeled my wheelchair to the stage during a programme! I got a call from PMO one day that said “Deepaji you need to reach Ahmedabad for an event.” It was at a very shortnoticebutformeit was a matter of great pride and honour as I was being invited at the inauguration of Trans- Stadia, which is one of the most advanced inte- grated multi-purpos e stadiums in the country . Some of the finest ath- letesof thecountrywere invited to this event but PM Modi came up to all of us and said “This line up of great achievers wouldneverbecomplete without a woman, and without a disabled.” And then he wheeled me onto the stage prior to his address. What made theeveningmorememo- rable was that during histhreeminutespeech, PM Modi again ad- dressed the youth of the country and said that if someonereallyneedsin- spiration to be able to overcomethechallenges of life, he or she must definitely read Deepa’s biography once. She is a living example of grit and resilience. That day to this mo- ment, it has been my endeavour to live up to the faith, concern and respect PM Modi har- bours for me. I would never want that trust to break and at the same time I want to continue to contribute in the making of my New In- dia that cares for its women and its disabled. According to informa- tion shared by the Raj Niwas, recharge pits situated at around 800 locations, owned by dif- ferent agencies, were identified by DJB. Civic agencies like PWD and MCD would undertake the work themselves while the DJB would do the work for other agen- cies. The departments were also directed to convert the dysfunction- al/abandoned and sealed tube wells into water recharging and retention pits. Besides, directions were also is- sued to dredge and deep- en around 700 water bodies to a depth of at least 2 metres and the Ir- rigation and Flood Con- trol (IFC) department was directed to make the catchment area free of encroachment. New Delhi (PTI): In a bid to prevent fires at dumpsites and the subse- quent deterioration of air quality in the nation- al capital, Delhi’s pollu- tion control body has di- rected the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to ensure that or- ganic waste from slaugh- terhouses and fish mar- kets do not end up in the landfill sites. It has also asked the MCD to ensure that in- dustrial as well as elec- tronic waste, including lithium batteries, is not dumped at the landfill sites. The organic waste dumped in a landfill pro- duces methane when it rots. In hot weather con- ditions, methane catches fire spontaneously and the blaze spreads as it feeds on combustible ma- terial like textiles and plastics. In an order issued on June 10, the pollution control body asked the MCD to install methane gas detectors (on down- wind side) at the dump- sites so that areas with high methane concentra- tion can be identified and preventive action be un- dertaken. “Further temperature at windrows to be moni- tored with non-contact infrared thermometer (as used for monitoring human body tempera- ture under COVID cir- cumstances) and records be maintained for any major deviations. The temperature is to be in the range of 35 degrees Celsius to 59 degrees Cel- sius. Treated leachate/ water to be sprayed on the waste when rise in temperature is ob- served,” the order read. Delhi has reported five massive fires at its land- fill sites this year — three at Ghazipur and two at Bhalswa. The fire that broke out at Bhalswa on April 26 kept on raging for more than 10 days, exacerbat- ing the already polluted air in nearby areas. Over the past three days, the minimum temperature was over 30 degrees Cel- sius. Light rain and thun- dershowers are expect- ed in the city till Tues- day next week, the IMD forecast said, with the maximum tempera- ture expected to dip to 34 degrees Celsius by Monday. On Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced that the Delhi government will organise a ‘Whole- sale Shopping Festival’ to celebrate the iconic wholesale markets in the capital and to give them a new identity across the world. PERSPECTIVE NEW DELHI | THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 2022 04 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/delhi I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia eepa Malik talks about her meet- ing with PM Modi post her re- turn from Rio Para- lympics in 2016. This differentiates PM Modi from all other leaders India has ever seen- his keen interest in people, their problems and as- pirations and a burning desire to help everyone reach their goals. Such encouragement coming from the PM completely changes the psyche of the athletes and they are filled with the fervour of patriot- ism, the desire to bring home a medal! It is obvi- ousthatwhen the PM him- self is interact- ing with play- ers, there is this inevitable focus on governance. The players share n u m e r o u s thoughts with him and they include feedback the facilities, a look into their problems, the pro- cess of preparing for tournaments, and when our PM takes cogni- zance of such issues, it does not only encourage the players but it helps in bringing the country together and transform- ing the mindset towards the disabled. I got a call from PMO one day that said “Deepaji you need to reach Ahmedabad for an event.” It was at a very shortnoticebutformeit was a matter of great pride and honour as I was being invited at the inauguration of Trans- Stadia, which is one of the most advanced inte- grated multi-purpose stadiums in the country . Sharat K Verma New Delhi: Even be- fore giving somewhat of a contest to the BJP in presidential election, the Congress party will have to contest with other political parties to make itself heard. This is so because the opposi- tion parties are prepar- ing to contest the elec- tions by forming a non- BJP and non-Congress front. Even if a Third or Federal Front is not formed, opposition par- ties are still trying to field a common candi- date and force the Con- gress to support this op- position alliance. On the other hand Con- gress is not ready to sup- port the leader of other party other than its own party in any condition. The Congress wants that a presidential can- didate fielded by it should be supported ‘automatically’ by the rest of the parties as has been the case in the past. That is why the Congress has engaged Mallikarjun Kharge in this campaign. On the other hand the leaders of Mamata Ba- nerjee,Chandrashekhar Rao and Arvind Kejri- wal’s parties are en- gaged in different ef- forts. Until a few days ago, the Samajwadi Par- ty National President AkhileshYadavwasalso taking initiative in this matter. But he has been embroiled in the by-elec- tions to two Lok Sabha seats in his state - Azam- garh and Rampur. Both the seats are of impor- tantforhimasbothhave been his party’s seats and vacated by resigna- tion. However, Mamata Banerjee has called a meeting of opposition parties on Wednesday . Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh has gone to Mumbai to meet Sharad Pawar. K Chandrashekhar Rao has already met Stalin, Hemant Soren, Mamta Banerjee, Arvind Kejri- wal etc. So, the Congress has yet to fight the battle of deciding the candi- datebeforetherealfight. Meanwhile, Sonia Gan- dhi’s health has deterio- rated and Rahul Gandhi is embroiled in ED’s in- terrogation and in such situation,Congressfinds itself embroiled in a po- litical ‘turf war’, the re- sult of which will decide thepoliticalfutureof the grand-old party . Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: Eight years ago, SP patriarch Mu- layam Singh Yadav, who was contesting from Azamgarh parliamen- tary seat, was apprehen- sive about his victory in the initial phase itself, so he called his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav there. The latter’s presence not only strengthened the SP , but also ensured Mulayam’s victory by a huge margin of 3.60 lakhs in spite of the na- tionwide pro-Modi wave. Later, addressing a meeting in Saifai, Mu- layam Singh Yadav ad- mitted candidly that the Azamgarh election was a close shave for him. He creditedthemembersof Saifai family, including Shivpal Singh Yadav, for the victory of that Lok Sabha election. It is ob- vious that Shivpal proved his worth as an excellentelectionorgan- izer. However, subsequent developments led to a deep rift between Shiv- pal Singh Yadav and his nephew, Akhilesh Ya- dav. In the 2017 assembly elections, SP chief Akh- ilesh Yadav completely sidelined Shivpal. De- spite the alliance with Congress in that elec- tion, the party could not even touch the mark of fifty seats. It was be- lieved that along with the BJP wave, Shivpal’s discontent also played a role in the defeat of Akhilesh’s party . In the backdrop of Shivpal’s displeasure, in the 2019 general elec- tions, three members of the Saifai family lost the elections in SP’s bas- tions. These included DimpleYadavfromKan- nauj, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad and Dharmendra Yadav from Badaun. Although Shivpal had withdrawn the candida- ture of his outfit PSPL candidate Sunil Singh Rathore from Kannauj seat, the result of his an- noyance was that Akh- ilesh’s wife lost the elec- tion by just twelve thou- sand votes to BJP’s Sub- rata Pathak. Subrata was defeated by Dimple in the 2014 elections by nineteen thousand votes. In Badaun, Dhar- mendra Yadav, staunch supporter of Akhilesh in saifai clan, was de- feated by BJP’s Sang- hamitra Maurya by 26,000 votes, while Dhar- mendra won by a mar- gin of one lakh votes in 2014. Shivpal Singh Yadav himself apparently be- came an obstacle in the way of his nephew Ak- shay Yadav, who regis- tered a big victory in the year 2014 from Firo- zabad seat; Chandrasen Jadaun of BJP won by twenty eight thousand votes. M Tariq Khan Lucknow: As mercury soars, political tempar- tures are also on the rise in Uttar Pradesh. Months after the As- sembly elections, the focus has shifted to the crucial Lok Sabha by- polls in Azamgarh and Rampur. The by-elec- tion to the two seats is scheduled for June 23. The counting of votes will be on June 26. Both the seats are considered the bas- tions of the Samajwadi Party (SP), one was held by party president Akhilesh Yadav and the other by the party’s vet- eran leader Azam Khan. The SP managed to win the seats even as BJP swept the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the state. But, reported differ- ences between the two leaders, whose election to the state Assembly necessitated the by- elections, may have im- plications for the out- come of the battle in Rampur. The SP won all 10 as- sembly segments in Azamgarh in this year’s polls, one reason why the seat is high on BJP’s priority. IN THE BACKDROP OF SHIVPAL’S DISPLEASURE, IN THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS, THREE MEMBERS OF THE SAIFAI FAMILY LOST THE ELECTIONS IN SP’S BASTIONS WITH ‘NUPUR SHARMA’ BECOMING POLL NARRATIVE, FIGHT TURNS TRIANGULAR Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Lucknow: With Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati aggressively trying to cash in on the resentment brewing in the Muslim community over former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s remarks against the Prophet and Yogi Adityanath government’s “bulldozer justice” against those involved in Friday violence, the prestigious Lok Sabha byelection in Azamgarh has become interesting as the fight has distinctly turned triangular. The Samajwadi Party with its Yadav-Muslim combination has been desperately trying to retain the seat which had fallen vacant after the resignation of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. The SP has fielded Yadav’s cousin Dharmendra Yadav who had lost 2019 Lok Sabha election. But Mayawati, taking the fight aggressively and making effort to make dent into SP’s well-entrenched Muslim base, seems to have put spoke in SP’s plan. CM appoints his two key aide to oversee by-polls DISPLEASURE ACT New Delhi (PTI): The UAE has ordered a sus- pension of exports and re-exports of wheat and wheat flour origi- nating from India for four months, the Gulf nation’s ministry of economy said on Wednesday. The move follows India banning the ex- port of wheat last month to check the surge in local prices. With this, Indian wheat cannot be root- ed to third countries via the UAE. The ban, which the ministry called as ‘moratorium’, has been imposed effective from May 13 “in view of the international develop- ments that have affect- ed trade flows”. India had on May 14 banned wheat exports except for those backed by already issued let- ters of credit (LCs) and to countries seeking to ensure food security. Since then, it has al- lowed shipments of 469,202 tonnes of wheat. The United Arab Emir- ates Ministry of Econo- my said the ban “ap- plies to all wheat varie- ties namely hard, ordi- nary and soft wheat and wheat flour.” In a statement said a moratorium has been imposed “on the ex- port and re-export of wheat and wheat flour originating from the Republic of India, in- cluding free zones, for a period of four months starting from May 13, 2022.” This “decision comes in view of the international develop- ments that have affect- ed trade flows, and in appreciation of the solid and strategic re- lations that bind the UAE and India. Especially after the signing of the Compre- hensive Economic Partnership Agree- ment between the two countries and the In- dian government’s ap- proval to export wheat to the UAE for domes- tic consumption.” Ayodhya (PTI): Maha- rashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Aadi- tya Thackeray, who on Wednesday paid a visit to Ayodhya, said his ar- rival at the temple town is not associated with politics but he is here to seek the blessings of Lord Ram.
