M Tariq Khan
Lucknow: Chief Min-
ister Yogi Adityanath
has appointed two of
his senior most minis-
ters, finance minister
Suresh Khanna and ag-
riculture minister
Surya Pratap Shahi, to
overesee the party’s
campaign and ensure
victory of BJP candi-
dates in the Rampur
and Azamgarh Lok Sab-
ha by-polls.
The decision was tak-
en by Yogi while presid-
ing over a meeting of
his council of ministers
convened to discuss the
prevailing political sit-
uation and work out a
strategy for the by-elec-
tion to the two Lok Sab-
ha seats. Yogi said that
Suresh Khanna and
Surya Pratap Shahi
would work as election
in-charges for Rampur
and Azamgarh seats,
respectively. As a large
number of ministers
would also camp in the
two Lok Sabha constitu-
encies for campaigning
in coming days, the duo
would be exempted
from the divisional/dis-
trict tours during the
period, Yogi said.
Months after the As-
sembly elections, the
focus has shifted to the
crucial Lok Sabha by-
polls in Azamgarh and
Rampur. The by-elec-
tion to the two seats is
scheduled for June 23.
The counting of votes
will be on June 26.
Both the seats are
considered as bastions
of the Samajwadi Party
(SP), one held by party
president Akhilesh Ya-
dav and the other by the
party’s veteran leader
Azam Khan. The SP
managed to win the
seats even as BJP swept
the 2019 Lok Sabha polls
in the state. But, report-
ed differences between
the two leaders, whose
election to the state As-
sembly necessitated the
by-elections, may have
implications for the out-
come of the battle in
Rampur. The SP won all
10 assembly segments
in Azamgarh in this
year’s polls, one reason
why the seat is high on
BJP’s priority

her meet-

PM Modi
post her re-
turn from
Rio Para-
lympics in 2016. She re-
calls how in her career
of 10 years and years of
winning medals, it was
the very first time when
the Prime Minister of
India had invited her to
be part of a Meet and
Greet ceremony
. PM
Modi called her by her
name and said “Deepa,
in all your lectures,
speeches and interac-
tion with other players,
it is your positivity that
comes to the fore. I my-
self watch your videos
many a time and I feel
positive.” I believe noth-
ing can make for a more
memorable
moment
than when the Prime
Minister himself ac-
knowledges your inner
strength and courage,
says Deepa.
It was after Tokyo
2020 Paralympics
when all the ath-
letes met Prime
Minister Modi af-
ter returning
home with 19
medals. I had
participated not
just as a sport-
sperson but as a
team leader too in
those Paralym-
pics. Modiji supported,
blessed and encouraged
all the athletes before
they left for the event.
The medals, which we
won through Modiji’s
support and our hard
work were instrumen-
tal in changing the way
people perceive disabil-
ities. PM Modi’s en-
couragement
paved the
way for Paralympics
to
be treated like main-
stream sports in India.
He met all of us with
great love, affection and
appreciated our efforts.
He took time out for us
generously
from his
tight schedule- a PM’s
time is always invalua-
ble - and those golden
moments will remain
itched forever in the
hearts and minds of
our young athletes. The
best part about this was
that PM Modi had de-
tailed information
of
each and every player.
He just wasn’t aware of
the personal lives of the
athletes but he also fol-
lowed them religiously
throughout their Tokyo
tour so much so that he
knew what exactly the
players were doing at
what time, what their
likes and dislikes are,
much like a family
member would do. This
differentiate
s PM Modi
from all other leaders
India has ever seen- his
keen interest in people,
their problems and as-
pirations and a burning
desire to help everyone
reach their goals. Such
encourageme
nt coming
from the PM completely
changes the psyche of
the athletes and they
are filled with the
fervour of patriot-
ism, the desire to
bring home a
medal!
It is obvi-
ousthatwhen
the PM him-
self is interact-
ing with play-
ers, there is this
inevitable focus
on governance.
The players share
n u m e r o u s
thoughts with him and
they include feedback
the facilities, a look into
their problems, the pro-
cess of preparing for
tournaments
, and when
our PM takes cogni-
zance of such issues, it
does not only encourage
the players but it helps
in bringing the country
together and transform-
ing the mindset towards
the disabled.
I thank our PM for
mentioningmyachieve-
ments in his Sept 25,
2016 Mann Ki Baat
when he said that he
will never forget my
words I spoke after
I won the silver
medal in Rio.
I had said
“ w i t h
this medal I have de-
feated my handicap”. I
believe Modiji found it
energizing and I thank
him for recognizing me
for all my efforts.
I clearly recall one
very special moment
with PM Modi when I
experienced
how much
he cares about his coun-
trymen. It was a recep-
tion on August 15 at
Rashtrapati
Bhawan
and I had the honour to
be a part of it too. When
PM Modi came towards
us, he began by interact-
ing one by one with all
the athletes. We already
know how well-versed
he is at all times with
the personal and profes-
sional details of each
and every player. At the
same time, his aura is so
magnetic, that people
tend to flock to him nat-
urally
.Asheapproached
me, suddenly a lot of
people came towards us
to greet him. In their ex-
citement, they some-
how overlooked the fact
that I was sitting there,
at the centre of the com-
motion. And all of them
starting reaching out to
the PM over me which
was a cause of discom-
fort for me.
But then the most un-
expected happened. PM
Modi himself, with both
hishands,createdakind
of barrier around me as
if trying to shield me in
that commotion.
And
then, being the beloved
brother of every woman
in the country
, he placed
hishandonmybackand
told everyone to be cau-
tious. He said “Deepa
has undergone several
surgeries and her back
has innumerable
stitch-
es. Please do not lean
over her. She will get
hurt.” At that moment,
tears swelled in my eyes
when I heard the PM say
these words so full of
empathy, compassion
and concern. I felt it was
totallyremarkablethata
he should even remem-
ber that Deepa is strug-
gling with a spinal cord
injury and that the
Prime Minister should
try and protect her from
bodily harm.
I was touched and
overwhelmed
by this ex-
pression of concern for
me by PM Modi. I have
had the privilege of
meeting and interacting
with PM Modi on nu-
merous occasions over a
decade. In fact there was
one instance when he
himself wheeled my
wheelchair to the stage
during a programme!
I
got a call from PMO one
day that said “Deepaji
you need to reach
Ahmedabad
for an
event.” It was at a very
shortnoticebutformeit
was a matter of great
pride and honour as I
was being invited at the
inauguration
of Trans-
Stadia, which is one of
the most advanced inte-
grated multi-purpos
e
stadiums in the country
.
Some of the finest ath-
letesof thecountrywere
invited to this event but
PM Modi came up to all
of us and said “This line
up of great achievers
wouldneverbecomplete
without a woman, and
without a disabled.”
And then he wheeled me
onto the stage prior to
his address. What made
theeveningmorememo-
rable was that during
histhreeminutespeech,
PM Modi again ad-
dressed the youth of the
country and said that if
someonereallyneedsin-
spiration to be able to
overcomethechallenges
of life, he or she must
definitely read Deepa’s
biography once. She is a
living example of grit
and resilience.
That day to this mo-
ment, it has been my
endeavour to live up to
the faith, concern and
respect PM Modi har-
bours for me. I would
never want that trust to
break and at the same
time I want to continue
to contribute in the
making of my New In-
dia that cares for its
women and its disabled.

“We are encouraging

No stamp duty on property transfer to blood relatives
First India Bureau
Lucknow: In a major
relief, the Yogi govern-
ment has given its nod

no stamp duty will be
levied on transfer of
property between blood
relations.
The proposal, which
was initially mooted in

the State cabinet meet-
ing presided by CM
Yogi on Tuesday and
expected to benefit a
large section.
Till now, five to sev-
en percent stamp duty
had to be paid on the

this category, the gov-

over protests
First India Bureau
Jhansi: For the Con-
gress, an individual
takes precedence over
the country, said Depu-
ty Chief Minister Kes-
hav Prasad Maurya as
he slammed the party
for holding demonstra-
tions over the question-
ing of its leader Rahul
Gandhi in a money-
laundering case.
Lashing out at Con-
gress, Maurya said po-
litical demonstrations
have proved that “cor-
rupt people are trying
unsuccessfully to put
pressure on institu-
tions like the Enforce-
ment Directorate”.
He said PM Narendra
Modi had faced harass-
ment at the hands of
central agencies when
he was the CM of Guja-
rat but he never used
the party to show
strength or put pres-
sure.
“He had to appear in
front of the ED or the
CBI but never showed
strength of the party to
avoid it. But here the
country is not big for
the Gandhi family
, their
party is not big, the in-
dividual is big,” he said.
“In the BJP, it is not
so. It is the country
first, then the party and
only then the person,”
he said during a two-
day visit to the Maura-
nipur area of the
district.

talks about
her meet-
ing with
PM Modi
post her re-
turn from
Rio Para-
lympics in 2016. She re-
calls how in her career
of 10 years and years of
winning medals, it was
the very first time when
the Prime Minister of
India had invited her to
be part of a Meet and
Greet ceremony
. PM
Modi called her by her
name and said “Deepa,
in all your lectures,
speeches and interac-
tion with other players,
it is your positivity that
comes to the fore. I my-
self watch your videos
many a time and I feel
positive.” I believe noth-
ing can make for a more
memorable moment
than when the Prime
Minister himself ac-
knowledges your inner
strength and courage,
says Deepa.
It was after Tokyo
2020 Paralympics
when all the ath-
letes met Prime
Minister Modi af-
ter returning
home with 19
medals. I had
participated not
just as a sport-
sperson but as a
team leader too in
those Paralym-
pics. Modiji supported,
blessed and encouraged
all the athletes before
they left for the event.
The medals, which we
won through Modiji’s
support and our hard
work were instrumen-
tal in changing the way
people perceive disabil-
ities. PM Modi’s en-
couragement paved the
way for Paralympics to
be treated like main-
stream sports in India.
He met all of us with
great love, affection and
appreciated our efforts.
He took time out for us
generously from his
tight schedule- a PM’s
time is always invalua-
ble - and those golden
moments will remain
itched forever in the
hearts and minds of
our young athletes. The
best part about this was
that PM Modi had de-
tailed information of
each and every player.
He just wasn’t aware of
the personal lives of the
athletes but he also fol-
lowed them religiously
throughout their Tokyo
tour so much so that he
knew what exactly the
players were doing at
what time, what their
likes and dislikes are,
much like a family
member would do. This
differentiates PM Modi
from all other leaders
India has ever seen- his
keen interest in people,
their problems and as-
pirations and a burning
desire to help everyone
reach their goals. Such
encouragement coming
from the PM completely
changes the psyche of
the athletes and they
are filled with the
fervour of patriot-
ism, the desire to
bring home a
medal!
It is obvi-
ousthatwhen
the PM him-
self is interact-
ing with play-
ers, there is this
inevitable focus
on governance.
The players share
n u m e r o u s
thoughts with him and
they include feedback
the facilities, a look into
their problems, the pro-
cess of preparing for
tournaments, and when
our PM takes cogni-
zance of such issues, it
does not only encourage
the players but it helps
in bringing the country
together and transform-
ing the mindset towards
the disabled.
I thank our PM for
mentioningmyachieve-
ments in his Sept 25,
2016 Mann Ki Baat
when he said that he
will never forget my
words I spoke after
I won the silver
medal in Rio.
I had said
“ w i t h
this medal I have de-
feated my handicap”. I
believe Modiji found it
energizing and I thank
him for recognizing me
for all my efforts.
I clearly recall one
very special moment
with PM Modi when I
experienced how much
he cares about his coun-
trymen. It was a recep-
tion on August 15 at
Rashtrapati Bhawan
and I had the honour to
be a part of it too. When
PM Modi came towards
us, he began by interact-
ing one by one with all
the athletes. We already
know how well-versed
he is at all times with
the personal and profes-
sional details of each
and every player. At the
same time, his aura is so
magnetic, that people
tend to flock to him nat-
urally
.Asheapproached
me, suddenly a lot of
people came towards us
to greet him. In their ex-
citement, they some-
how overlooked the fact
that I was sitting there,
at the centre of the com-
motion. And all of them
starting reaching out to
the PM over me which
was a cause of discom-
fort for me.
But then the most un-
expected happened. PM
Modi himself, with both
hishands,createdakind
of barrier around me as
if trying to shield me in
that commotion. And
then, being the beloved
brother of every woman
in the country
, he placed
hishandonmybackand
told everyone to be cau-
tious. He said “Deepa
has undergone several
surgeries and her back
has innumerable stitch-
es. Please do not lean
over her. She will get
hurt.” At that moment,
tears swelled in my eyes
when I heard the PM say
these words so full of
empathy, compassion
and concern. I felt it was
totallyremarkablethata
he should even remem-
ber that Deepa is strug-
gling with a spinal cord
injury and that the
Prime Minister should
try and protect her from
bodily harm.
I was touched and
overwhelmed by this ex-
pression of concern for
me by PM Modi. I have
had the privilege of
meeting and interacting
with PM Modi on nu-
merous occasions over a
decade. In fact there was
one instance when he
himself wheeled my
wheelchair to the stage
during a programme! I
got a call from PMO one
day that said “Deepaji
you need to reach
Ahmedabad for an
event.” It was at a very
shortnoticebutformeit
was a matter of great
pride and honour as I
was being invited at the
inauguration of Trans-
Stadia, which is one of
the most advanced inte-
grated multi-purpose
stadiums in the country
.
Some of the finest ath-
letesof thecountrywere
invited to this event but
PM Modi came up to all
of us and said “This line
up of great achievers
wouldneverbecomplete
without a woman, and
without a disabled.”
And then he wheeled me
onto the stage prior to
his address. What made
theeveningmorememo-
rable was that during
histhreeminutespeech,
PM Modi again ad-
dressed the youth of the
country and said that if
someonereallyneedsin-
spiration to be able to
overcomethechallenges
of life, he or she must
definitely read Deepa’s
biography once. She is a
living example of grit
and resilience.
That day to this mo-
ment, it has been my
endeavour to live up to
the faith, concern and
respect PM Modi har-
bours for me. I would
never want that trust to
break and at the same
time I want to continue
to contribute in the
making of my New In-
dia that cares for its
women and its disabled.

Rajnath said PM Modi wants our
opinion on Prez poll : Cong leader
THE COMMENT CAME HOURS AHEAD OF THE OPPOSITION’S BIG MEETING IN THE
NATIONAL CAPITAL CALLED BY WEST BENGAL CHIEF MINISTER MAMATA BANERJEE
New Delhi(ANI): Con-
gress leader Mallikar-
jun Kharge said on
Wednesday that De-
fence Minister Rajnath
Singh had told him that
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi wants to know
the Opposition’s opin-
ions on the Presidential
poll.
The comment came
hours ahead of the Op-
position’s big meeting
in the national capital
called by Trinamool
Congress chief and
West Bengal Chief Min-
ister Mamata Banerjee.
Mr Kharge also asked
if the government will
accept if the Opposi-
tion parties propose a
“unanimous, non-con-
troversial” candidate’s
name.”I spoke to Ra-
jnath Singh, he said
that the PM wants to
know our opinions, I
asked what their pro-
posal is, who the candi-
dates are... he didn’t say
to be in touch. If we put
forward a unanimous
n o n - c o n t r ove r s i a l
name, will the govern-
ment accept it?” Mr
Kharge told news agen-
cy. Ms Banerjee had in-
vited chiefs of 22 politi-
cal parties to the meet-
ing in Delhi to discuss a
united fight against the
BJP and its allies in the
election for a new Pres-
ident.But as the count-
down for the meeting
began, several parties
made it clear that they
will stay away. While
some chose to skip the
meeting in their at-
tempt to be equidistant
from the Congress and
the BJP, others cited the
presence of the Con-
gress for their decision.

New Delhi: The Left parties have suggest-

averse to the suggestion. His name is likely
to be proposed at today’s meeting.Speak-

New Delhi (PTI):
Sports Minister Anurag

said that the govern-

ble steps to ensure safe-
ty of women athletes,
hours after the Sports
Authority of India (SAI)
issued a directive, mak-
ing it mandatory for
NSFs to include a wom-

“The awaereness

SAI’s decision came
close of the heels of two

Presidential contest to define Cong’s political relevance!
Sharat K Verma
New Delhi: Even be-
fore giving somewhat of
a contest to the BJP in
presidential election,
the Congress party will
have to contest with
other political parties to
make itself heard. This
is so because the opposi-
tion parties are prepar-
ing to contest the elec-
tions by forming a non-
BJP and non-Congress
front. Even if a Third or
Federal Front is not
formed, opposition par-
ties are still trying to
field a common candi-
date and force the Con-
gress to support this op-
position alliance. On
the other hand Con-
gress is not ready to sup-
port the leader of other
party other than its own
party in any condition.
The Congress wants
that a presidential can-
didate fielded by it
should be supported
‘automatically’ by the
rest of the parties as
has been the case in the
past. That is why the
Congress has engaged
Mallikarjun Kharge in
this campaign.
On the other hand the
leaders of Mamata Ba-
nerjee,Chandrashekhar
Rao and Arvind Kejri-
wal’s parties are en-
gaged in different ef-
forts. Until a few days
ago, the Samajwadi Par-
ty National President
AkhileshYadavwasalso
taking initiative in this
matter. But he has been
embroiled in the by-elec-
tions to two Lok Sabha
seats in his state - Azam-
garh and Rampur. Both
the seats are of impor-
tantforhimasbothhave
been his party’s seats
and vacated by resigna-
tion. However, Mamata
Banerjee has called a
meeting of opposition
parties on Wednesday
.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi
Party MP Sanjay Singh
has gone to Mumbai to
meet Sharad Pawar. K
Chandrashekhar Rao
has already met Stalin,
Hemant Soren, Mamta
Banerjee, Arvind Kejri-
wal etc. So, the Congress
has yet to fight the battle
of deciding the candi-
datebeforetherealfight.
Meanwhile, Sonia Gan-
dhi’s health has deterio-
rated and Rahul Gandhi
is embroiled in ED’s in-
terrogation and in such
situation,Congressfinds
itself embroiled in a po-
litical ‘turf war’, the re-
sult of which will decide
thepoliticalfutureof the
grand-old party
.
Why Mallikarjun
Kharge?
The Congress wants
that a presidential
candidate fielded by it
should be supported
‘automatically’ by the
rest of the parties as
has been the case in the

a final call on the
recommendation, and there is a
little chance left for the survival
of the corporation as all the
revival bids in the past have
come to a cropper. Besides, the
government has refused to give
any financial assistance to it.
“The UP Government
Employees’ Welfare Corporation
management has sent a
proposal to the state
government, recommending the
winding up of the corporation
after the government asked
them to mobilise resources on
their own to keep the
corporation alive,” said an
official requesting anonymity.
Set up as a registered society in
1965, the corporation was
mandated to sell consumer
items of daily use to government
employees and pensioners
through its own depots (stores)
at a price lower than the market
price because such goods
remained exempted from sales
tax/VAT. But a countdown to its
end began after the Goods and
Services Tax (GST) regime came
into force in the country and the
state in July 2017.

TWO HELD FOR COW SLAUGHTER AFTER ENCOUNTER
Noida (PTI): Two sus-
pected cow slaughterers
were arrested after they
got injured in a gunfight
with the police in Uttar
Pradesh’s Noida on
Wednesday morning, of-
ficials said. Their four
other associates, how-
ever, managed to escape
during the encounter
which broke out around
8 am near a dumping
yard in Sector 68, under
the Phase 3 police sta-
tion limits, the officials
said. The local police
had set up a checking
point when the miscre-
ants, who were in a
Santro car, were inter-
cepted for inquiry
.
However, they opened
fire on the police party,
leading to retaliatory
action in which two got
injured and were held,
Additional Deputy
Commissioner of Police
(Central Noida) Elama-
ran G said. Those held
have been identified as
Mohd Zeeshan and
Mohd Isa, both resi-
dents of Amroha dis-
trict in western UP,
Elamaran said, adding
the duo was sent to a
hospital for treatment.
He said police recovered
tools used in cow
slaughtering from their
possession along with
two illegal firearms and
some ammunition after
the encounter. Earlier,
the Noida police had
launched an investiga-
tion after suspected cat-
tle carcasses were found
strewn at a dumping
yard near a village in
the Phase 3 police sta-
tion area on June 7. On
June 13, the police had
claimed to have arrest-
ed four persons near the
Sector 62 roundabout
and recovered beef be-
ing transported by them
in 2 cars, as per officials.
The UP Cow Slaugh-
ter (Prevention) Act,
2020 bans the slaughter
of cows in the state and
provides punishment of
up to seven years in jail
and a fine of Rs 3 lakh
for offenders. Earlier
this month, the UP Po-
lice identified that 168
animal mafia are cur-
rently active in the state,
including in its western
part, and launched a
crackdown on them.
Tools used in slaughtering have been recovered along with 2 illegal firearms and some ammunition, police said

Ayodhya (PTI): Maha-
rashtra minister and
Shiv Sena leader Aadi-
tya Thackeray, who on
Wednesday paid a visit
to Ayodhya, said his ar-
rival at the temple town
is not associated with
politics but he is here to
seek the blessings of
Lord Ram.
Thackeray, who tried
to stay clear of politics,
however said that Cen-
tral agencies have
turned into an adver-
tisement literature. He
was responding to a
question on the Enforce-
ment Directorate quiz-
zing Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi.
His visit comes at a
time when the BJP
, Shiv
Sena’s former ally, has
been questioning the
party’s commitment to
Hindutva. Earlier, head
of Maharashtra
Navnirman Sena Raj
Thackeray had an-
nounced his visit to
Ayodhya on June 5, but
was cancelled later.
“My visit to Ayodhya
is no politics. I have
come here to seek the
blessings of Lord Ram,”
Thackeray told the me-
dia. “Ayodhya is the cen-
tre of faith in India. In
2018, we gave this slogan
- first temple, then gov-
ernment. After Shiv Se-
na’s slogan, the way for
the construction of the
temple was cleared.
Now, Ram temple is be-
ing built on the orders
of the Supreme Court,”
he said.
“We will pray to Lord
Rama to give us the
strength to serve the
people better,” he said.
Thackeray said talks
will be held with the Ut-
tarPradeshgovernment

Lucknow: Eight years
ago, SP patriarch Mu-
layam Singh Yadav, con-
testing from Azamgarh
seat, was apprehensive
about his victory in the
initial phase itself, so he
called his brother
Shivpal Singh Yadav
there. The latter’s pres-
ence not only strength-
ened the SP
, but also en-
sured Mulayam’s victo-
ry by 3.60 lakhs in spite
of the pro-Modi wave.
Later, addressing a
meeting in Saifai, MSY
admitted candidly that
the Azamgarh election
was a close shave for
him. He credited the
members of Saifai fam-
ily, including Shivpal,
for the victory of that
Lok Sabha election.
However, subsequent
developments led to a
deep rift between
Shivpal and his neph-
ew, Akhilesh. In the
2017 assembly polls, SP
chief Akhilesh Yadav
completely sidelined
Shivpal. Despite the al-
liance with Congress in
that election, the party
could not even reach 50
seats. It was believed
that along with the BJP
wave, Shivpal’s discon-
tent also played a role in
the defeat of SP. In the
backdrop of Shivpal’s
displeasure, in 2019 gen-
eral elections, three
members of the Saifai
family lost in SP’s bas-
tions - Dimple Yadav
from Kannauj, Akshay
Yadav from Firozabad
and Dharmendra Yadav
from Badaun. Although
Shivpal had withdrawn
the candidature of his
outfit PSPL candidate
SunilRathorefromKan-
nauj, the result of his
annoyance was that
Akhilesh’s wife lost the
electionbyjust12kvotes
toBJP’sSubrataPathak.
In Badaun, Dharmen-
dra Yadav was defeated
by BJP’s Sanghamitra
Maurya by 26k votes.
Shivpal Yadav him-
self apparently became
an obstacle in the way
of his nephew Akshay,
who registered a big
victory in 2014 from
Firozabad seat; Chan-
drasen Jadaun of BJP
won by 28k votes. Ak-
shay was second and
Shivpal was in third
position.
Political observers
assert that BJP’s cam-
paigning in support of
‘Nirahua’, who secured
35.1 per cent votes
against Akhilesh last
time, is clearly indicat-
ing that the ruling par-
ty does not want to al-
low the by-election to
become an ‘easy fight’
in any case. When every
vote is valuable, in such
a situation, the stand of
political stalwart Shiv-
pal, who has been left
out of the list of star
campaigners of SP, will
matter a lot. The ‘Shiv-
pal factor’, which has
become the cause of
concern for the SP in
the past, can prove to be
harmful for the poll cal-
culations of the SP even
in this by-election.
Lucknow (PTI): Sam-
ajwadi Party chief
Akhilesh Yadav on
Wednesday dubbed
the Enforcement Di-
rectorate as Examina-
tion in Democracy and
said in politics the op-
position is required to
clear this exam when
the government fails.
He said those who
are prepared are not
afraid of any exam-
ination. “The meaning
of ED is now Exam-
ination in Democra-
cy’. In politics, the op-
position is required to
clear this exam. When
the government fails,
it announces this
exam. Those who have
prepared well are nei-
ther afraid of writ-
ten-reading exam nor
verbal exam...And you
should never be
afraid,” Yadav tweeted
in Hindi. His reaction
comes amid the ongo-
ing questioning of
Congress leader Rahul
Gandhi by the ED in
the National Herald
case.

Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj
Party (BSP) chief Mayawati
aggressively trying to
cash in on the resentment
brewing in the Muslim
community over former
BJP spokesperson Nupur
Sharma’s remarks against
the Prophet and Yogi Adity-
anath government’s “bull-
dozer justice” against those
involved in Friday violence,
the prestigious Lok Sabha
byelection in Azamgarh has
become interesting as the
fight has distinctly turned
triangular. The Samajwadi
Party with its Yadav-Muslim
combination has been
desperately trying to retain
the seat which had fallen
vacant after the resignation
of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.
The SP has fielded Yadav’s
cousin Dharmendra Yadav
who had lost 2019 Lok
Sabha election in Badaun.
But Mayawati, taking the
fight aggressively and
making effort to make dent
into SP’s well-entrenched
Muslim base, seems to
have put spoke in SP’s plan.
The BSP has fielded former
legislator and a popular
Muslim leader Shah Alam
Guddu Jamali.
Even as the Samajwadi
Party along with its ally
Suheldeo Bharatiya Samaj
Party (SBSP) chief Om
Prakash Rajbhar has
launched campaign to retain
the seat, the BJP candidate
Bhojpuri singer Dinesh Lal
Yadav “Nirahua” is hoping
to cut into SP’s Yadav vote
bank. There are sizeable
numbers of Rajbhars in
Sagdi, Mehnagar, Nizama-
bad, Atraulia and Azamgarh
Sadar assembly seats. In
Azamgarh both Yadav-Mus-
lim and Dalit-Muslim make
winning combination and it
would be watched with in-
terest how this caste-based
alliance works. The division
in Muslim vote, as it seems
possible, could also help
the BJP in wresting the seat
as non-Yadav OBC in east
UP had gone with BJP in
assembly elections. Apart
from central leaders the BJP
has deployed large number
of senior leaders including
ministers to campaign in
the constituency. According
to information CM Yogi has
directed the ministers not to
raise “Nupur Sharma” issue
in the campaigning.

Lucknow: With the dis-
appearance of name of
national general secre-
tary BSP Satish Chan-
dra Mishra from star
campaigners list for
Lok Sabha byelection in
Azamgarh, specula-
tions are rife in party
circle that days of
“Brahmin face” of the
party are numbered in
the Dalit outfit.
The BSP recently re-
leased the list of the 40
star campaigners for
the Azamgarh Lok
Sabha seat. The list in-
cluded BSP president
Mayawati, state unit
president Bhim Ra-
jbhar, party MLA Uma-
shankar Singh, zonal
coordinator Munkad
Ali and other senior
party leaders.
Mishra, whose term as
a member of Rajya
Sabha expires on July 4,
had campaigned exten-
sively for his party in
the 2022 UP elections
held in Febru-
ary-March. Mishra was
entrusted with the task
of mobilising the Brah-
min community to sup-
port the BSP. BSP man-
aged to win only one
seat in the 2022 U.P. as-
sembly elections.
Nakul Dubey — a
close aide of Mishra —
recently joined the Con-
gress, setting specula-
tion of a rift in the party
.
A BSP member said
Mishrawasnotincluded
in the list of the star
campaigners on health
grounds. To win the
seat, the party has in-
cluded OBC-Dalit and
Muslim leaders as star
campaigners, he added.
BSP has fielded former
MLA Shah Alam alias
GudduJamalifortheby-
polls on Azamgarh seat.
Aftertheentryof Dubey
in Congress there were
reports that Mishra
would also join the Con-
gress to re-enter Rajya
Sabha but the Congress
nominated three other
leaders Pramod Tiwari,
Imran Pratapgarhi and
Rajeev Shukla for the
upper house.
Mishra, who was an
architect of Dalit-Brah-
min combination, had
played significant role
in bringing the upper
caste community closer
to BSP in 2007 assembly
.
He was suitably reward-
ed with Rajya Sabha
seat. In 2022 election
also he launched his
Brahmin outreach after
offering prayers at Ram
temple in Ayodhya and
organised scores of
Brahmin conferences
all over the state. But
the community did not
respond to his gesture.
The BSP, in a worst
ever performance, could
win just one assembly
.
Mayawati seems to have
realised that with BJP’s
octopus like grip over
Brahmin community, it
is presumably useless to
further invest on “Brah-
min face” of the party
.
While reorganising the
party after assembly de-
bacle Mayawati has
been relentlessly trying
to sew in Dalit-Muslim
combination for 2024
Lok Sabha elections.
Tough for Brahmin face Mishra to find place in Maya’s Dalit-Muslim combo

  • 1. M Tariq Khan Lucknow: Chief Min- ister Yogi Adityanath has appointed two of his senior most minis- ters, finance minister Suresh Khanna and ag- riculture minister Surya Pratap Shahi, to overesee the party’s campaign and ensure victory of BJP candi- dates in the Rampur and Azamgarh Lok Sab- ha by-polls. The decision was tak- en by Yogi while presid- ing over a meeting of his council of ministers convened to discuss the prevailing political sit- uation and work out a strategy for the by-elec- tion to the two Lok Sab- ha seats. Yogi said that Suresh Khanna and Surya Pratap Shahi would work as election in-charges for Rampur and Azamgarh seats, respectively. As a large number of ministers would also camp in the two Lok Sabha constitu- encies for campaigning in coming days, the duo would be exempted from the divisional/dis- trict tours during the period, Yogi said. Months after the As- sembly elections, the focus has shifted to the crucial Lok Sabha by- polls in Azamgarh and Rampur. The by-elec- tion to the two seats is scheduled for June 23. The counting of votes will be on June 26. Both the seats are considered as bastions of the Samajwadi Party (SP), one held by party president Akhilesh Ya- dav and the other by the party’s veteran leader Azam Khan. The SP managed to win the seats even as BJP swept the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the state. But, report- ed differences between the two leaders, whose election to the state As- sembly necessitated the by-elections, may have implications for the out- come of the battle in Rampur. The SP won all 10 assembly segments in Azamgarh in this year’s polls, one reason why the seat is high on BJP’s priority . Turn to P2 Yogi appoints two key aides to oversee LS by-polls RAMPUR & AZAMGARH Surya Pratap Shahi Suresh Khanna APARNA YADAV GETS THREAT CALL, FIR LODGED First India Bureau Lucknow: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav received a threat call on her WhatsApp number on Wednesday. She alleged that the caller threatened to shoot her with an AK-47 rifle within the next 72 hours. Police have lodged an FIR at Gautam Palli station based on Yadav’s complaint and initiated inves- tigation. A surveillance team is looking for more details of the number used for the threat call. In her complaint she said that the call came twice on her WhatsApp number. Aparna Yadav had joined BJP before the assembly elections. In 2017 she had contested assembly polls on SP ticket from Lucknow Cantt seat but was de- feated by BJP candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi. MHA to give priority to ‘Agniveers’ for jobs in CAPFs, Assam Rifles: Amit Shah New Delhi (Agencies): Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that ‘Agniveers’ who complete their four years’ service in the armed forces under the programme will be giv- en priority for jobs in paramilitary forces and Assam Rifles. Taking to twitter, Shah said, “Agnipath Yojana is a visionary and welcome decision of Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi for the bright future of the youth. In this context, today, the MHA has de- cided to give priority to Agniveers who com- plete 4 years under this scheme for recruitment in CAPFs (central armed police forces) and Assam Rifles.” 5G: START OF NEW ERA New Delhi (ANI): To boost digital connectiv- ity, the Union Cabinet chaired by PM Naren- dra Modi has approved the proposal of Dept of Telecommunications to conduct a spectrum auction through which spectrum will be as- signed to the successful bidders for providing 5G services to public and enterprises. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the 5G spectrum auction is the beginning of a new era for the Indian Telecom. The government an- nounced a total auction of 72097.85 MHz of spec- trum with 20 years va- lidity by July-end will be put to auction, which is said to be held by the end of July 2022. The auction is expect- ed to see participation from 3 main carriers in the country including — Vodafone Idea, Bhar- ti Airtel & Reliance Jio. BRIEF in in India successfully test fires Prithvi-II Bhubaneswar: India successfully test-fired it’s indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile during night time on Wednesday as part of a user training trial from a test range off the Odisha coast. Nearly 10 days after India conducted its routine test. Indian-origin doctor jailed for rape in UK London: An Indian-origin doctor was on Wednes- day sentenced to four years of imprisonment by a Scottish court after be- ing found guilty by jurors of serious sexual assault against a woman over 3 years ago. Manesh Gill, 39, was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh. Judge’s daughter arrested for murder New Delhi: Over 7 years after murder of a national- level shooter in Chandi- garh, CBI on Wednesday arrested an accused named Kalyani Singh, daughter of HP HC’s Act- ing CJ Sabina. Kalyani is said to have been accom- panying another person who also shot Sidhu. Hearing against UP demolitions today New Delhi: The Supreme Court will on Thursday hear a plea by Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind against the demolition drives carried out in Uttar Pradesh following violent protests over the Prophet remarks row. Plea seeks direc- tions to initiate action against the officials. The move will help youngsters, trained under ‘Agnipath’, to contribute more to the service and security of the nation. Detailed planning has already begun on this decision. —Amit Shah, Home Minister  Speeds 10 times faster than 4G  5G auction will be held in July  It will arrive in 13 cities: DoT Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Home Minister Amit Shah eepa Malik talks about her meet- ing with PM Modi post her re- turn from Rio Para- lympics in 2016. She re- calls how in her career of 10 years and years of winning medals, it was the very first time when the Prime Minister of India had invited her to be part of a Meet and Greet ceremony . PM Modi called her by her name and said “Deepa, in all your lectures, speeches and interac- tion with other players, it is your positivity that comes to the fore. I my- self watch your videos many a time and I feel positive.” I believe noth- ing can make for a more memorable moment than when the Prime Minister himself ac- knowledges your inner strength and courage, says Deepa. It was after Tokyo 2020 Paralympics when all the ath- letes met Prime Minister Modi af- ter returning home with 19 medals. I had participated not just as a sport- sperson but as a team leader too in those Paralym- pics. Modiji supported, blessed and encouraged all the athletes before they left for the event. The medals, which we won through Modiji’s support and our hard work were instrumen- tal in changing the way people perceive disabil- ities. PM Modi’s en- couragement paved the way for Paralympics to be treated like main- stream sports in India. He met all of us with great love, affection and appreciated our efforts. He took time out for us generously from his tight schedule- a PM’s time is always invalua- ble - and those golden moments will remain itched forever in the hearts and minds of our young athletes. The best part about this was that PM Modi had de- tailed information of each and every player. He just wasn’t aware of the personal lives of the athletes but he also fol- lowed them religiously throughout their Tokyo tour so much so that he knew what exactly the players were doing at what time, what their likes and dislikes are, much like a family member would do. This differentiate s PM Modi from all other leaders India has ever seen- his keen interest in people, their problems and as- pirations and a burning desire to help everyone reach their goals. Such encourageme nt coming from the PM completely changes the psyche of the athletes and they are filled with the fervour of patriot- ism, the desire to bring home a medal! It is obvi- ousthatwhen the PM him- self is interact- ing with play- ers, there is this inevitable focus on governance. The players share n u m e r o u s thoughts with him and they include feedback the facilities, a look into their problems, the pro- cess of preparing for tournaments , and when our PM takes cogni- zance of such issues, it does not only encourage the players but it helps in bringing the country together and transform- ing the mindset towards the disabled. I thank our PM for mentioningmyachieve- ments in his Sept 25, 2016 Mann Ki Baat when he said that he will never forget my words I spoke after I won the silver medal in Rio. I had said “ w i t h this medal I have de- feated my handicap”. I believe Modiji found it energizing and I thank him for recognizing me for all my efforts. I clearly recall one very special moment with PM Modi when I experienced how much he cares about his coun- trymen. It was a recep- tion on August 15 at Rashtrapati Bhawan and I had the honour to be a part of it too. When PM Modi came towards us, he began by interact- ing one by one with all the athletes. We already know how well-versed he is at all times with the personal and profes- sional details of each and every player. At the same time, his aura is so magnetic, that people tend to flock to him nat- urally .Asheapproached me, suddenly a lot of people came towards us to greet him. In their ex- citement, they some- how overlooked the fact that I was sitting there, at the centre of the com- motion. And all of them starting reaching out to the PM over me which was a cause of discom- fort for me. But then the most un- expected happened. PM Modi himself, with both hishands, createdakind of barrier around me as if trying to shield me in that commotion. And then, being the beloved brother of every woman in the country , he placed hishandonmybackand told everyone to be cau- tious. He said “Deepa has undergone several surgeries and her back has innumerable stitch- es. Please do not lean over her. She will get hurt.” At that moment, tears swelled in my eyes when I heard the PM say these words so full of empathy, compassion and concern. I felt it was totallyremarkablethata he should even remem- ber that Deepa is strug- gling with a spinal cord injury and that the Prime Minister should try and protect her from bodily harm. I was touched and overwhelmed by this ex- pression of concern for me by PM Modi. I have had the privilege of meeting and interacting with PM Modi on nu- merous occasions over a decade. In fact there was one instance when he himself wheeled my wheelchair to the stage during a programme! I got a call from PMO one day that said “Deepaji you need to reach Ahmedabad for an event.” It was at a very shortnoticebutformeit was a matter of great pride and honour as I was being invited at the inauguration of Trans- Stadia, which is one of the most advanced inte- grated multi-purpos e stadiums in the country . Some of the finest ath- letesof thecountrywere invited to this event but PM Modi came up to all of us and said “This line up of great achievers wouldneverbecomplete without a woman, and without a disabled.” And then he wheeled me onto the stage prior to his address. What made theeveningmorememo- rable was that during histhreeminutespeech, PM Modi again ad- dressed the youth of the country and said that if someonereallyneedsin- spiration to be able to overcomethechallenges of life, he or she must definitely read Deepa’s biography once. She is a living example of grit and resilience. That day to this mo- ment, it has been my endeavour to live up to the faith, concern and respect PM Modi har- bours for me. I would never want that trust to break and at the same time I want to continue to contribute in the making of my New In- dia that cares for its women and its disabled. In the courtesy meet- ing held at the CM’s of- ficialresidencebetween a delegation from Sin- gapore led by the Singa- pore High Commission- er and CM Yogi, various discussions were held to further improve the bilateral relations and cooperation in existing fields and ways to ex- pand it, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. During the talks, Sin- gapore High Commis- sioner Wong informed that various companies from Singapore have in- vested about USD 250 million in UP. “We are encouraging our investors to invest in Lucknow and other parts of the state. During the talks, Yogi said that India and Sin- gapore share strong diplomatic and trade relations, and UP can play an important role in improving them. “All necessary infra- structure is available for industrial develop- ment. Yogi bets on experience of Sr ministers UP Govt extends wheat procurement season till June 30 Continued from page 1 Like in 2022 assem- bly polls, the by- polls are also seen essentially as a con- test between SP and BJP even as the Ba- hujan Samaj Party (BSP) has fielded a prominent candi- date, Shah Alam, in Azamgarh. Alam quit the Sa- majwadi Party be- fore the assembly polls after failing to get a ticket. While the ruling party has fielded Bhojpuri singer Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’ from Azamgarh Lok Sab- ha constituency, Ghanshyam Lodhi is in fray from Ram- pur Lok Sabha seat from BJP. Not surprisingly, therefore, the seats are on the Bharati- ya Janata Party (BJP)’s “priority list” as the ruling party sees it as an opportunity to make inroads into the Opposition Sa- majwadi Party (SP) strongholds in Uttar Pradesh. First India Bureau Lucknow: The Ut- tar Pradesh govern- ment on Wednesday extended the wheat procurement season till June 30 to ensure no wheat farmer fac- es inconvenience. The extended period is expected to benefit farmers. PERSPECTIVE LUCKNOW | THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 2022 04 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/lucknow I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia eepa Malik talks about her meet- ing with PM Modi post her re- turn from Rio Para- lympics in 2016. This differentiates PM Modi from all other leaders India has ever seen- his keen interest in people, their problems and as- pirations and a burning desire to help everyone reach their goals. Such encouragement coming from the PM completely changes the psyche of the athletes and they are filled with the fervour of patriot- ism, the desire to bring home a medal! It is obvi- ousthatwhen the PM him- self is interact- ing with play- ers, there is this inevitable focus on governance. The players share n u m e r o u s thoughts with him and they include feedback the facilities, a look into their problems, the pro- cess of preparing for tournaments, and when our PM takes cogni- zance of such issues, it does not only encourage the players but it helps in bringing the country together and transform- ing the mindset towards the disabled. I got a call from PMO one day that said “Deepaji you need to reach Ahmedabad for an event.” It was at a very shortnoticebutformeit was a matter of great pride and honour as I was being invited at the inauguration of Trans- Stadia, which is one of the most advanced inte- grated multi-purpose stadiums in the country . Sharat K Verma New Delhi: Even be- fore giving somewhat of a contest to the BJP in presidential election, the Congress party will have to contest with other political parties to make itself heard. This is so because the opposi- tion parties are prepar- ing to contest the elec- tions by forming a non- BJP and non-Congress front. Even if a Third or Federal Front is not formed, opposition par- ties are still trying to field a common candi- date and force the Con- gress to support this op- position alliance. On the other hand Con- gress is not ready to sup- port the leader of other party other than its own party in any condition. The Congress wants that a presidential can- didate fielded by it should be supported ‘automatically’ by the rest of the parties as has been the case in the past. That is why the Congress has engaged Mallikarjun Kharge in this campaign. According to the state government, they are yet to take a final call on the recommendation, and there is a little chance left for the survival of the corporation as all the revival bids in the past have come to a cropper. Besides, the government has refused to give any financial assistance to it. “The UP Government Employees’ Welfare Corporation management has sent a proposal to the state government, recommending the winding up of the corporation after the government asked them to mobilise resources on their own to keep the corporation alive,” said an official requesting anonymity. Set up as a registered society in 1965, the corporation was mandated to sell consumer items of daily use to government employees and pensioners through its own depots (stores) at a price lower than the market price because such goods remained exempted from sales tax/VAT. But a countdown to its end began after the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime came into force in the country and the state in July 2017. —M Tariq Khan MOTHER, MINOR DAUGHTERS FOUND HANGING IN RAE BARELI Bodies of a 32-year-old woman and her 2 minor daughters were found hanging in their house in Bijamau village, police said. Thackeray, who tried to stay clear of politics, however said that Cen- tral agencies have turned into an adver- tisement literature. He was responding to a question on the Enforce- ment Directorate quiz- zing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. His visit comes at a time when the BJP , Shiv Sena’s former ally, has been questioning the party’s commitment to Hindutva. Earlier, head of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Raj Thackeray had an- nounced his visit to Ayodhya on June 5, but was cancelled later. “My visit to Ayodhya is no politics. I have come here to seek the blessings of Lord Ram,” Thackeray told the me- dia. “Ayodhya is the cen- tre of faith in India. In 2018, we gave this slogan - first temple, then gov- ernment. After Shiv Se- na’s slogan, the way for the construction of the temple was cleared. Now, Ram temple is be- ing built on the orders of the Supreme Court,” he said. “We will pray to Lord Rama to give us the strength to serve the people better,” he said. Thackeray said talks will be held with the Ut- tarPradeshgovernment seekinglandinAyodhya to establish Maharash- tra Sadan. On his first visit to Ayodhya, Thackeray will also hold a meeting with party functionar- iesbesidesparticipating in an ‘aarti’ at the banks of River Sarayu lat- er in the day . Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena president and Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thacker- ay, arrived in Lucknow at around 11 am from where he reached Ayod- hya by road. Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: Eight years ago, SP patriarch Mu- layam Singh Yadav, con- testing from Azamgarh seat, was apprehensive about his victory in the initial phase itself, so he called his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav there. The latter’s pres- ence not only strength- ened the SP , but also en- sured Mulayam’s victo- ry by 3.60 lakhs in spite of the pro-Modi wave. Later, addressing a meeting in Saifai, MSY admitted candidly that the Azamgarh election was a close shave for him. He credited the members of Saifai fam- ily, including Shivpal, for the victory of that Lok Sabha election. However, subsequent developments led to a deep rift between Shivpal and his neph- ew, Akhilesh. In the 2017 assembly polls, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav completely sidelined Shivpal. Despite the al- liance with Congress in that election, the party could not even reach 50 seats. It was believed that along with the BJP wave, Shivpal’s discon- tent also played a role in the defeat of SP. In the backdrop of Shivpal’s displeasure, in 2019 gen- eral elections, three members of the Saifai family lost in SP’s bas- tions - Dimple Yadav from Kannauj, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad and Dharmendra Yadav from Badaun. Although Shivpal had withdrawn the candidature of his outfit PSPL candidate SunilRathorefromKan- nauj, the result of his annoyance was that Akhilesh’s wife lost the electionbyjust12kvotes toBJP’sSubrataPathak. In Badaun, Dharmen- dra Yadav was defeated by BJP’s Sanghamitra Maurya by 26k votes. Shivpal Yadav him- self apparently became an obstacle in the way of his nephew Akshay, who registered a big victory in 2014 from Firozabad seat; Chan- drasen Jadaun of BJP won by 28k votes. Ak- shay was second and Shivpal was in third position. Political observers assert that BJP’s cam- paigning in support of ‘Nirahua’, who secured 35.1 per cent votes against Akhilesh last time, is clearly indicat- ing that the ruling par- ty does not want to al- low the by-election to become an ‘easy fight’ in any case. When every vote is valuable, in such a situation, the stand of political stalwart Shiv- pal, who has been left out of the list of star campaigners of SP, will matter a lot. The ‘Shiv- pal factor’, which has become the cause of concern for the SP in the past, can prove to be harmful for the poll cal- culations of the SP even in this by-election. Lucknow (PTI): Sam- ajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday dubbed the Enforcement Di- rectorate as Examina- tion in Democracy and said in politics the op- position is required to clear this exam when the government fails. He said those who are prepared are not afraid of any exam- ination. “The meaning of ED is now Exam- ination in Democra- cy’. In politics, the op- position is required to clear this exam. When the government fails, it announces this exam. Those who have prepared well are nei- ther afraid of writ- ten-reading exam nor verbal exam...And you should never be afraid,” Yadav tweeted in Hindi. His reaction comes amid the ongo- ing questioning of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by the ED in the National Herald case. The Samajwadi Party with its Yadav-Muslim combination has been desperately trying to retain the seat which had fallen vacant after the resignation of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. The SP has fielded Yadav’s cousin Dharmendra Yadav who had lost 2019 Lok Sabha election in Badaun. But Mayawati, taking the fight aggressively and making effort to make dent into SP’s well-entrenched Muslim base, seems to have put spoke in SP’s plan. The BSP has fielded former legislator and a popular Muslim leader Shah Alam Guddu Jamali. Even as the Samajwadi Party along with its ally Suheldeo Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar has launched campaign to retain the seat, the BJP candidate Bhojpuri singer Dinesh Lal Yadav “Nirahua” is hoping to cut into SP’s Yadav vote bank. There are sizeable numbers of Rajbhars in Sagdi, Mehnagar, Nizama- bad, Atraulia and Azamgarh Sadar assembly seats. In Azamgarh both Yadav-Mus- lim and Dalit-Muslim make winning combination and it would be watched with in- terest how this caste-based alliance works. The division in Muslim vote, as it seems possible, could also help the BJP in wresting the seat as non-Yadav OBC in east UP had gone with BJP in assembly elections. Apart from central leaders the BJP has deployed large number of senior leaders including ministers to campaign in the constituency. According to information CM Yogi has directed the ministers not to raise “Nupur Sharma” issue in the campaigning. Former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma First India Bureau Lucknow: With the dis- appearance of name of national general secre- tary BSP Satish Chan- dra Mishra from star campaigners list for Lok Sabha byelection in Azamgarh, specula- tions are rife in party circle that days of “Brahmin face” of the party are numbered in the Dalit outfit. The BSP recently re- leased the list of the 40 star campaigners for the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat. The list in- cluded BSP president Mayawati, state unit president Bhim Ra- jbhar, party MLA Uma- shankar Singh, zonal coordinator Munkad Ali and other senior party leaders. Mishra, whose term as a member of Rajya Sabha expires on July 4, had campaigned exten- sively for his party in the 2022 UP elections held in Febru- ary-March. Mishra was entrusted with the task of mobilising the Brah- min community to sup- port the BSP. BSP man- aged to win only one seat in the 2022 U.P. as- sembly elections. Nakul Dubey — a close aide of Mishra — recently joined the Con- gress, setting specula- tion of a rift in the party . A BSP member said Mishrawasnotincluded in the list of the star campaigners on health grounds. To win the seat, the party has in- cluded OBC-Dalit and Muslim leaders as star campaigners, he added. BSP has fielded former MLA Shah Alam alias GudduJamalifortheby- polls on Azamgarh seat. Aftertheentryof Dubey in Congress there were reports that Mishra would also join the Con- gress to re-enter Rajya Sabha but the Congress nominated three other leaders Pramod Tiwari, Imran Pratapgarhi and Rajeev Shukla for the upper house. Mishra, who was an architect of Dalit-Brah- min combination, had played significant role in bringing the upper caste community closer to BSP in 2007 assembly . He was suitably reward- ed with Rajya Sabha seat. In 2022 election also he launched his Brahmin outreach after offering prayers at Ram temple in Ayodhya and organised scores of Brahmin conferences all over the state. But the community did not respond to his gesture. The BSP, in a worst ever performance, could win just one assembly . Mayawati seems to have realised that with BJP’s octopus like grip over Brahmin community, it is presumably useless to further invest on “Brah- min face” of the party . While reorganising the party after assembly de- bacle Mayawati has been relentlessly trying to sew in Dalit-Muslim combination for 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
