Lakhimpur: The elder
sister planned and
helped in the gang-rape
and brutal murder of a
minor girl who was
strangulated to death
with her own cloth after
being gang-raped, here
in Lakhimpur Kheri
under Ramapur police
outpost area.
Police sources here
said that the deceased
girl had witnessed her
elder sister in an objec-
tionable position with
her friends and she had
threatened her to in-
form their parents
about her acts. After
several spats, the elder
sister took her to a
farm for defecation
where her friends gang-
raped her and then
murdered her.
Police investigations
have revealed that Ran-
jeet, Amar Singh, An-
kit, Sandeep, Deepu
and Arjun were in-
volved in the crime.
Ranjeet Amar Singh

In1995-96whenourfirstgovtwasformed,
there was a five-day meeting in Chharodi.
I came in contact with Modiji at a personal
level and even as I recollect my interaction
with Modiji of those years, I am filled with
emotion. His persona has always been that
of an extremely
emotional and a simple
person who harbours
and nurtures feel-
ings of compassion for his fellow mates.
Once it happened
during that 4 day long
session that all mins were within the prem-
ises for a meeting and their drivers were
sitting outside. Modiji came to me and gave
his special standing instructio
n to me “Al-
ways serve food to the drivers first”. He
stated a simple reason that supported
this
instructio
n. He explained
to me that since
the drivers are always moving around with
us, whether it is day or night and their duty
is extremely
tough, they need to be taken
care of. They do a selfless service for us
which goes much beyond their call of duty
.
The salary the drivers receive is not ade-
quate reward for their devotion. Therefore,
we should keep their needs foremost in our
mind. Where do we find a world leader so
acutely aware of the difficulties of the coo-
mon man? I was really very fortunate
to
have got a chance to know Modiji’s thought-
process and ideology from a closer angle.
Not just this, we also could see that Modi-
ji possessed a deep know-how
of technology
and had a keen foresight when it came to
technicalapplications.Heusedtoliveinone
of the rooms of Maninagar RSS Bhawan at
that time. One day he asked me if I had a
tech-savvy friend who could help him
get a computer.
I said I had one, Anil
Patel, who had a tech business.
Anil is in Canada now. Well I ar-
ranged for a meeting between
Narendraji and my friend
and I must admit, I was in
awe of Modiji when I wit-
nessed him interactin
g with
Anil. Modiji held a discussion
withAnilPatelfornearlyhalf
an hour pertaining to comput-
ers. I am talking about an era
which can easily be termed as
the dawn of the computer age in
India. Computer
s was a new sub-
jectinourcountryanditwasextremely
rare
tofindsomeonepossessing
suchdeepknowl-
edge of computers. Also people of Modiji’s
ageinthosedayswerenotusuallyinterested
in this field, and one could forget about dis-
cussing the subject at length with someone.
Well, after talking through the intrica-
cies of computer
applicatio
ns, Modiji
asked Anil if he would mind getting him a
computer. Anil agreed readily and then
Modiji worked on it, learning more about
computer
applicatio
ns. In the 90’s era wit-
nessing a well-know
n leader display such
interest and ability at computers was a
clear inspiration for me.
I also recall another motivating aspect of
his personality
. His room at Maninagar RSS
Bhawan was 10 feet by 10 feet. In the middle
of theroomwashisbed.Andbelievemeyou,
when I used to visit him, I could see that he
was engulfed within a sea of books. He had
stacked up books up to a height of 6 feet
around the bed and in the middle of this
ocean of knowledge, Modiji used to be seat-
ed, always engrossed
in deep study
. On his
forehead, there used to be the white mark of
purity
, which is the chandan leip (sandal-
wood paste) as we know it. That vision of
Modiji, a simple man wearing a dhoti, his
face resplendent in the light of wisdom, his
physical presence like that of an ascetic, a
divine light shone on him as he sat in middle
of a room on a bed surrounded with innu-
merable books touching ceiling – well, it is
notpossibleforanyonewhohasbeenwitness
to that vision to remove it from his living
memory! Such was the aura, power, I would
say a magnetic pull, of Modiji’s persona.
I only consider myself extremely
fortu-
nate because this visage, this divine ap-
pearance, manifeste
d itself to me during
those 4 days! And I can say it with convic-
tion, in fact I have no doubt about it, what
Modiji is doing for our country and the
world, he is doing it because he is inspired
by some divine force. Our PM is no ordi-
nary mortal. All his actions are guided by
a calling that goes much deeper and all his
works are invariably imbued with the fra-
grance of spirituality and wisdom.

here were about 32-35 ministers in
that session and from among the
3-4 people chosen from Gujarat,

Lucknow(PTI): The
list of single-use plastic
(SUP) items being
banned from July 1 is
not comprehensive as it
excludes multi-layer
packaging which is the
real menace when it
comes to plastic con-
tamination, green
think tank Centre for
Science and Environ-
ment (CSE) said on
Wednesday
.
In an August 2021 no-
tification, the Union
environment ministry
had defined SUP com-
modities as plastic
items intended to be
used once for the same
purpose before being
disposed of or recycled.
The notification had
also put forward a plan
for phasing out selected
SUP items.
The ban that comes
into effect from July 1
covers items such as
plastic carry bags (less
than 75 micron in thick-
ness, to be revised to
120 micron in Decem-
ber 2022), earbuds, plas-
tic crockery items
(spoons, plates, glass-
es), straws, and certain
kinds of plastic packag-
ing material.One of the
main concerns with the
ban is the fact that the
list of banned items is
not comprehensive,
said Siddharth Singh,
programme manager,
Solid Waste Manage-
ment unit, CSE.
For one, the list does
not include multi-lay-
ered packaging (MLP).
CSE researchers point-
ed out that MLP is used
in almost all FMCGs,
from chips to shampoos
to gutka pouches.
The government says
that all packaging ma-
terial has been includ-
ed as part of the Ex-
tended Producer Re-
sponsibility (EPR) noti-
fication.
Under this, the com-
panies that manufac-
ture or consume this
material are required
to take it back and send
it for reprocessing and
annual targets have
been fixed for compa-
nies on how much is to
be recollected.
Narain said while
this sounds good on pa-
per, there are huge
problems in the way
EPR has been imple-
mented.
For instance, there is
no information on the
quantity of this plastic
material or the waste
the company generates.
Not only is it based on
self-declaration, but
there is nothing availa-
ble in the public domain
to assess its accuracy
.

‘`2 LAKH REWARD FOR BEHEADING KILLERS’

Agra/Lucknow: Sev-
eral leaders of Hindu
outfits protested along
with organisation
members across UP on
Wednesday against the
heinous murder of
Kanhaiya Lal in
Udaipur, Rajasthan.
Leaders and members
of Akhil Bharatiya
Hindu Mahasabha,
Vishwa Hindu Pari-
shad (VHP) Bajrang
Dal, and BJP Yuva Mor-
cha held protests and
burned effigies in sev-
eral cities, including in
Lucknow, Kanpur, and
Agra.
Sanjay Jaat, spokes-
person of the Akhil
Bharatiya Hindu Ma-
hasabha in Agra, an-
nounced that the Hindu
Mahasabha will re-
ward with Rs 2 lakh
anyone who beheads
the two killers of Kan-
haiya Lal.
He also demanded
that Rajasthan chief
minister Ashok Gehlot
resign from his post as
the killing took place
because of the govern-
ment’s failure to pre-
vent it.
Jaat said that the
killers of Kanhaiya Lal
had threatened to at-
tack Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and
such threats cannot be
tolerated.
Protestors belonging
to Hindu outfits de-
manded death penalty
for the killers of Kan-

stringent action
against radical ele-

'Regrettable, un-Islamic': AIMPLB

First India Bureau
Lucknow: The All
India Muslim Person-
al Law Board (AIM-
PLB) condemned the
cold-blooded murder
of a tailor in Udaipur
saying that “taking
law into your own
hands is highly con-
demnable, regretta-
ble and un-Islamic”.
In a media state-
ment, Hazrat Maula-
na Khalid Saifullah
Rahmani, General
Secretary of AIMPLB
said, “It is a grave
crime to defame and
slander any religious
personality. The de-
rogatory words spo-
ken by (former) BJP
spokesperson, Nupur
Sharma against
Prophet Muhammad
are very painful for
the Muslim commu-
nity. The inaction of
the government
against this crime is
nothing but rubbing
salts on our wounds.
But, nobody can be
allowed to take the
law into their hands
and declaring some-
one a criminal and
then murdering them
is a highly condemn-
able act.”
He further stated,
“Neither the law nor
the Islamic Sharia al-
low it. The AIMPLB
strongly condemns
the incident of brutal
killing in Udaipur.”
The board also ap-
pealed to the Muslim
community to act pa-
tiently and to not take

dulge in any such ac-
tion that might dis-
turb communal har-

‘Appeasement
politics behind
Udaipur murder’
Gorakhpur (PTI):
Newly elected BJP MP
from Azamgarh Dinesh
Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’ on
Wednesday held “poli-
tics of appeasement for
votes” as the reason be-
hind incidents such as
the killing in Udaipur.
The Bhojpuri actor
also said only “nation-
alism” will prevail in
the country.
“The Udaipur inci-
dent is highly con-
demnable and such in-
cidents are caused due
to politics of appease-
ment for votes. Stern
action should be taken
(against the accused)
so that no one dares to
repeat it,” Yadav said
here in response to a
question on the killing.
Kanhaiya Lal Teli, a
tailor, was murdered
on Tuesday at his shop
in Rajasthan’s Udaipur

provocative remark
made by now-removed
BJP spokesperson Nu-
pur Sharma against
Prophet Mohammad.
Nirahua Yadav also
visited the Gorakhnath
temple in Gorakhpur-
post which he watched
Bollywood flick ‘Major’
with BJP workers.
When asked about
the opposition’s alleged
jibes at him calling him
a performer during the
campaign, Yadav said,
“It is their ignorance...
My guru Chief Minis-
ter Yogi Adityanath
says that art is God gift.
When I saw statue of
‘Nataraj’ (deity) in the
temple, I smiled be-
cause they not only
mocked the gift of God
but also the God. This
is the reason they are
nowhere, and are los-
ing their strongholds.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi
MODI: LIVING FOR THE
POOR, LEARNING FOR SELF!
ignesh Shah, a BJP leader from Gujarat
brings to us several anecdotes about our be-
lovedPM.Herecallsinstancesfromhisinter-
actionswithModijiatapersonallevel.These
memories of Modiji as shared by Jignesh
Shah paint a clear picture of a world leader
who is guided by divine providence and is
incredibly pure and wise. The kind of love

that treat it not as a barrier but as a great fa-
cilitator,makeshimtheidolof ayoungIndia!
In1995-96whenourfirstgovtwasformed,
there was a five-day meeting in Chharodi.
I came in contact with Modiji at a personal
level and even as I recollect my interaction
with Modiji of those years, I am filled with
emotion. His persona has always been that
of an extremely emotional and a simple
person who harbours and nurtures feel-
ings of compassion for his fellow mates.
Once it happened during that 4 day long
session that all mins were within the prem-
ises for a meeting and their drivers were
sitting outside. Modiji came to me and gave
his special standing instruction to me “Al-
ways serve food to the drivers first”. He
stated a simple reason that supported this
instruction. He explained to me that since
the drivers are always moving around with
us, whether it is day or night and their duty
is extremely tough, they need to be taken
care of. They do a selfless service for us
which goes much beyond their call of duty
.
The salary the drivers receive is not ade-
quate reward for their devotion. Therefore,
we should keep their needs foremost in our
mind. Where do we find a world leader so
acutely aware of the difficulties of the coo-
mon man? I was really very fortunate to
have got a chance to know Modiji’s thought-
process and ideology from a closer angle.
Not just this, we also could see that Modi-
ji possessed a deep know-how of technology
and had a keen foresight when it came to
technicalapplications.Heusedtoliveinone
of the rooms of Maninagar RSS Bhawan at
that time. One day he asked me if I had a
tech-savvy friend who could help him
get a computer. I said I had one, Anil
Patel, who had a tech business.
Anil is in Canada now. Well I ar-
ranged for a meeting between
Narendraji and my friend
and I must admit, I was in
awe of Modiji when I wit-
nessed him interacting with
Anil. Modiji held a discussion
withAnilPatelfornearlyhalf
an hour pertaining to comput-
ers. I am talking about an era
which can easily be termed as
the dawn of the computer age in
India. Computers was a new sub-
jectinourcountryanditwasextremelyrare
tofindsomeonepossessingsuchdeepknowl-
edge of computers. Also people of Modiji’s
ageinthosedayswerenotusuallyinterested
in this field, and one could forget about dis-
cussing the subject at length with someone.
Well, after talking through the intrica-
cies of computer applications, Modiji
asked Anil if he would mind getting him a
computer. Anil agreed readily and then
Modiji worked on it, learning more about
computer applications. In the 90’s era wit-
nessing a well-known leader display such
interest and ability at computers was a
clear inspiration for me.
I also recall another motivating aspect of
his personality
. His room at Maninagar RSS
Bhawan was 10 feet by 10 feet. In the middle
of theroomwashisbed.Andbelievemeyou,
when I used to visit him, I could see that he
was engulfed within a sea of books. He had
stacked up books up to a height of 6 feet
around the bed and in the middle of this
ocean of knowledge, Modiji used to be seat-
ed, always engrossed in deep study
. On his
forehead, there used to be the white mark of
purity
, which is the chandan leip (sandal-
wood paste) as we know it.
I only consider myself extremely fortu-
nate because this visage, this divine ap-
pearance, manifested itself to me during
those 4 days! And I can say it with convic-
tion, in fact I have no doubt about it, what
Modiji is doing for our country and the
world, he is doing it because he is inspired
by some divine force. Our PM is no ordi-
nary mortal. All his actions are guided by
a calling that goes much deeper and all his
works are invariably imbued with the fra-
grance of spirituality and wisdom.

THE GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
T
here were about 32-35 ministers in
that session and from among the
3-4 people chosen from Gujarat,
Modiji selected me as a karyakarta. That
was when I got the golden opportunity to
live with him and get to know him for 4
days. I came in contact with Modiji at a
personal level and even as I recollect my
interaction with Modiji of those years, I
am filled with emotion.

New Delhi: It seems
that the Congress party
has fallen alone in Ma-
harashtra. In the Rajya
Sabha elections, its can-
didate Imran Pratap-
garhi won, but the sec-
ond Congress candidate
could not win in the
Legislative Council
elections. The first can-
didate and Mumbai Re-
gional Congress Presi-
dent Bhai Jagtap also
won in the second
round of counting.
Even in his victory, less
of the party and his
own influence came in
handy. Congress has 44
MLAs but got only 41
votes. This means that
three MLAs did cross
voting. The question is,
where did these three
MLAs go? Did they vote
for BJP or go for NCP in
alliance? Keep in mind
that voting in the Legis-
lative Council elections
was done by secret bal-
lot. However, informed
sources say that the
leaders of both Shiv
Sena and NCP are an-
gry with the aggressive
politics of party’s state
president Nana Patole
and Mumbai regional
Congress president
Bhai Jagtap. Sharad Pa-
war’s party is more an-
gry because it feels that
the Congress is getting
OBC votes through
Nana Patole. Till now,
Chhagan Bhujbal of
NCP was considered to
be the biggest OBC lead-
er in the alliance. But
now it is not so. Second,
all the old Congress
leaders are either mar-
ginalized or deliberate-
ly kept silent. Even the
old system of communi-
cation was not working.
The old and traditional
leaders of the Congress
have been sidelined.

DONATES RS 25 L
FROM WHERE DID PAWAR
GARNER FIVE VOTES?
Mahesh Sharma
Mumbai: In the elec-
tions held for the 10
seats of the Legislative
Council in Maharash-
tra, after the BJP, it is
the NCP that had the
best performance. Al-
though the NCP has 53
MLAs in the Assembly,
two of its MLAs - Anil
Deshmukh and Nawab
Malik - are in jail, who
were not allowed to cast
their votes. Thus its ef-
fective strength of
MLAs is 51. Despite
this, its two candidates
got 56 votes in the Leg-
islative Council elec-
tions. First candidate
Eknath Khadse got 29
votes and second candi-
date Ramraje Nim-
balkar got 27 votes. So
the question really is,
from where did Pawar’s
party juggle five extra
votes? After the elec-
tion, Eknath Khadse
said that his old friends
in BJP did cross-voting
for him. Keep in mind
that Khadse was in the
BJP in the past but his
claim is not entirely
true.
BJP leaders have not
done cross voting. Had
BJP leaders done cross-
voting, the number of
votes polled by its five
candidates would not
have reached 133. So, it
seems that by talking to
the smaller parties and
independent MLAs sup-
porting the govern-
ment,theNCPgarnered
five extra votes for it-
self. It is also clear that
Pawar left both the al-
lies on their own terms
or ensured that both of
them suffer. Keep in
mind that both the can-
didates of Shiv Sena
also won but at least
three of its MLAs en-
gaged in cross voting.
Three Congress MLAs
also did cross voting.
On the contrary, all
NCP MLAs voted for
party candidates and on
top of that, Pawar gar-
nered 5 addl votes.

MAN THROWS ACID ON DIVORCED
WIFE FOR REFUSAL TO DO ‘HALALA’
Bareilly (PTI): A
34-year-old man threw
acid on his ex-wife
when she refused to do
Halala’ with his elder
brother, prompting au-
thorities to arrest him,
police said on Wednes-
day. The victim, Nas-
reen, 32, was living with
her parents after her
husband gave her triple
talaq about a month
ago, they said.
Ishaq, the accused,
on Tuesday came to
meet her and started
pressurising her for
‘halala’. When she re-
fused, he threw acid on
her which he was carry-
ing in a bottle inside a
bag, Nasreen told po-
lice. Nasreen in her
complaint said after
giving her triple talaq
the accused had been
pressurising her and
his elder brother for
‘halala’ to bring her
back home, which both
she and the elder broth-
er had been refusing.
Halala is a practice
in which a woman, after
being divorced by triple
talaq, marries another
man, consummates the
marriage, and gets di-
vorced again in order to
be able to remarry her
former husband.
The victim said she
did not file a case
against triple talaq to
keep her family intact
but Ishaq took it as her
weakness and sent her
messages that he want-
ed to accept her as his
wife again but she
must undergo ‘halala’
with his elder brother.
The couple had got
married 11 years ago
and has two daughters,
according to police.
The accused, who
used to work as a la-
bourer, spent his wages
on alcohol, which
pushed his wife into
work, and she started
making kites at home
to make ends meet.
According to Nas-
reen’s complaint, a
fight broke out between
the husband and wife a
month ago when their
younger daughter fell
ill, and Ishaq, under
the influence of alco-
hol, thrashed her, and
gave her triple talaq.

Lakhimpur Kheri
(PTI): A 13-year-old girl
was allegedly raped by
four men and strangled
to death in the presence
of and collusion with
her elder sister in Lakh-

UP, police said on
Wednesday. The police
have arrested seven
people -- the four who al-

The accused are aged

As per police, the sis-
ters had frequent quar-

Task Force (STF) has

they used to smuggle

vealed that the arrested
accused had delivered 6

EFFORTS TO WIN

cooperative elections
Three-tier cooperative elections
likely to be held in November this year
Changes made in the top posts of
cooperative institutions of state
First India Bureau
Prayagraj: The Alla-
habad High Court has
quashed an FIR of a
rape and Section 3/4 of
Dowry Prohibition Act
upon the submission
that the parties have ar-
rived at a compromise.
The counsel for the pe-
titioners as well as
counsel for the respon-
dent no 3 jointly sub-
mitted that the matri-
monial discord between
the parties has been
amicably settled and
that the respondent no
3 does not proceed with
the matter. In this re-
gard, a short counter-af-
fidavit has also been
filed by respondent no 3
and thus the FIR may be
quashed.
The Court noted, “It
is very clear that the
petitioners have prima
facie committed the
said offence. Perusal of
the FIR reveals that the
same was registered on
the basis that cogniza-
ble offence is disclosed
and thus there is no
force in the contention
of the counsel for the
petitioners that no cog-
nizable offence is made
out against the peti-
tioners.
“As the first infor-
mant/respondent no 3
has not been medically
examined by the police
and therefore the provi-
sions of Section 376 IPC
as alleged cannot be
said to be made out.
The offence stems out
of discordance, which
is a reason for lodging
of the impugned FIR,
but it is shown that the
respondent no 3/first
informant decided to
give up the case and
therefore, as the offence
under Section 323, 504,
506 IPC are compound-
able, the same are per-
mitted as compounded.
“In view of above,
the FIR for the offence
committed on October
1 last year i.e before six
months, registered in
Case under Sections
376, 354, 323, 504, 506
IPC and Section 3/4 of
Dowry Prohibition Act,
Police Station Main-
ather, District Morad-
abad, is quashed. Po-
lice officials shall not
take any further steps
in the matter,” the
Court ordered.

Lucknow: Before the
elections of the urban
bodies to be held in UP
by the end of this year,
political parties will
also have to face the
challenge of three-tier
elections of coopera-
tives. The main contest
will be confined around
BJP and SP. Recently,
BJP has completely
curbed the dominance
of SP in cooperatives.
Notably, three-tier
elections are conducted
by the Uttar Pradesh
State Cooperative Elec-
tion Commission. In
the first phase, elec-
tions will be held for
the primary i.e. PACS
committees. In the sec-
ond phase, elections
will be conducted for
the district level com-
mittees and in the third
phase, the management
committees of the top
cooperative institu-
tions will be elected.
There are a total of
46434 primary commit-
tees, 243 central com-
mittees and 50 apex
committees in UP. The
total number of voters
in the elections for
these committees is
more than 1.5 crore. For
the first time in 2017,
the elections of cooper-
atives were conducted
by the commission.
These cooperative
elections are likely to
be held in November
this year, for which the
model code of conduct
may be effective from
October.
Significantly, for
many decades, the SP
had complete domina-
tion in the cooperative
sector of the state. But
in 2019, BJP strategists
focused on this arena.
Under the leadership
of the party’s State
General Secretary (or-
ganization) Sunil Ban-
sal, the then coopera-
tive minister Mukut
Bihari Verma and the
office bearers of the re-
spective fronts of the
party together chalked
out a concrete strategy,
as a result of the cali-
brated move of the par-
ty the dominance of
the saffron camp has
been established in the
cooperative sector at
the present time.
In view of the up-
coming elections, re-
cently, changes were
made in the top posts of
cooperative institu-
tions of UP. According
to a highly placed BJP
source, whether it is
MP elections, assembly
elections, civic polls or
cooperative elections,
the party makes
multi-faceted efforts to
win.
Now party strate-
gists are toiling to meet
the election challenges
of cooperatives and ur-
ban bodies to be held by
the end of this year.

Rajbhar targeted SP
president Akhilesh Ya-
dav on Wednesday, say-
ing he had become the
chief minister only by
the grace of his father
and that his party had
not won any election un-
der his leadership since
2014. The Suheldev
Bharatiya Samaj Party
president also took
swipes at Yadav over the
SP’s defeat in the recent
Lok Sabha bypolls in
Azamgarh and Rampur.
On Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath’s claim
that the BJP was going
to win all the 80 seats in
the next Lok Sabha
polls, Rajbhar said it
could be possible if the
opposition does not re-
main united.
“What kind of a con-
test can you expect from
a party whose leader
does not take part in the
election campaign?”
Rajbhar quipped, tak-
ing an apparent dig at
Akhilesh, who did not
campaign either in
Azamgarh, the seat he
had vacated, or Rampur
vacated by Azam Khan.
When asked about
his recent remarks that
Akhilesh was doing pol-
itics from an air-condi-
tioned room, Rajbhar
told reporters, “He be-
came the CM not on his
own but by the grace of
his father Mulayam
Singh Yadav.” Known
for making hard-hitting
comments, Rajbhar fur-
ther said, “Akhilesh
should tell what work
he has done so far on
the ground. In how
many villages he has
held the meeting so far.
Mulayam Singh and
Shiv Pal Singh Yadav
were aware of the situ-
ation on the ground.”
“The 2012 assembly
elections were held un-
der the leadership of
Mulayam Singh Yadav.
In all the Lok Sabha and
Vidhan Sabha elections
held in the leadership of
Akhilesh Yadav, be it in
2014, 2017, 2019 and 2022,
he has lost,” he added.
The SP faced a defeat
in the Legislative Coun-
cil polls too. “Akhilesh
himself should clarify
that so far he has not
won a single election,”
Rajbhar said, adding
“Mulayam Singh Yadav

es. Akhilesh Yadav has
got politics from his fa-
ther in legacy
.”
Lucknow (PTI): A
day after a Punjab min-
ister accused the erst-
while Congress gov-
ernment in the state of
providing “VIP treat-
ment” to jailed gang-
ster Mukhtar Ansari,
the Uttar Pradesh BJP
on Wednesday asked
its leaders what the
party got in return for
such favour.
The BJP alleged that
gangster-turned-politi-
cian Ansari engaged in
immoral and illegal
activities from inside
the Punjab jail, and
asked Congress lead-
ers Rahul Gandhi and
Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra why such spe-
cial treatment was ex-
tended to him.
The BJP’s attack
came a day after Pun-
jab minister Harjot
Singh Bains accused
the previous Congress
regime of providing
VIP treatment to Ansa-
ri when he was lodged
at Rupnagar jail in the
state.
“Congress lends a
helping hand to crimi-
nals and mafias. BJP
leader Alka Rai, the
wife of slain Krish-
nanand Rai, had writ-
ten several letters to
Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra asking her not
to patronise a crimi-
nal. The UP govern-
ment had approached
the Supreme Court to
bring Ansari back to
UP but the then Punjab
government opposed it
as it wanted to provide
all facilities to him,”
BJP spokesman
Rakesh Tripathi said.
“I want to ask Rahul
and Priyanka why they
were giving these facil-
ities to Ansari. What
Congress got in return
for providing these fa-
cilities to a gangster.
The current govern-
ment is establishing
that Ansari was in-
volved in immoral and
illegal activities from
inside the jail,” he
said.

OPPOSITION SHOULD UNITE
AGAINST BJP: SBSP CHIEF
An influential OBC leader, Rajbhar’s party won six
seats in the recent state polls as a constituent
of the SP-led opposition coalition. To a question
over the SP’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha
by-elections, the SBSP chief said the Akhilesh
Yadav-led party itself invited trouble.“No one can win
the election by declaring the candidate on the last day
of nomination after the bugle of the election is sound-
ed,” he said. All opposition parties, including May-
awati and Akhilesh Yadav, should be united against
the BJP in Uttar Pradesh to protect the Constitution
and reservation, and in the interest of the backward
classes and Dalits, the SBSP chief stressed.

ggs can reduce
the risk of devel-
oping heart dis-
ease, as it helps
increase the
amount of heart-
healthy metabolites in
the blood, reveals a new
study published in eLife.
The findings suggest
that eating up to one egg
per day may help lower
the risk of developing
cardiovascular disease.
Eggs are a rich source
of dietary cholesterol,
but they also contain a
varietyof essentialnutri-
ents. There is conflicting
evidence as to whether
egg consumption is ben-
eficial or harmful to
heart health.
A 2018 study published
in the journal Heart,
which included approxi-
mately half a million
adults in China, found
that those who ate eggs
daily (about one egg per
day) had a substantially
lower risk of heart dis-
ease and stroke than
those who ate eggs less
frequently
.
Now, to better under-
stand this relationship,
the authors of this work
have carried out a popu-
lation-based study ex-
ploring how egg con-
sumption affects mark-
ers of cardiovascular
health in the blood.
Few studies have
looked at the role that
plasma cholesterol me-
tabolism plays in the
association between
egg consumption and
theriskof cardiovascu-
lardiseases,sowewant-
ed to help address this
gap, explains first au-
thorLangPan,MScatthe

jing, China.
EGGS CAN BOOST
HEART HEALTH
Pan and the team select-
ed 4,778 participants
from the China Ka-
doorie Biobank, of
whom 3,401 had car-
diovascular disease
and 1,377 did not. They
used a technique called
targeted nuclear magnet-
ic resonance to measure
225metabolitesinplasma
samples taken from the
participants' blood. Of
these metabolites, they
identified24thatwereas-
sociated with self-report-
ed levels of egg consump-
tion.Their analyses
showed that individuals
who ate a moderate
amountof eggshadhigh-
er levels of a protein in
their blood called apoli-
poprotein A1 — a build-
ing block of high-density
lipoprotein (HDL), also
known as 'good lipopro-
tein'. These individuals
especiallyhadmorelarge
HDL molecules in their
blood, which help clear
cholesterol from the
bloodvesselsandthereby
protectagainstblockages
that can lead to heart at-
tacks and stroke.
The researchers fur-
theridentified14metabo-
lites that are linked to
heartdisease.Theyfound
that participants who ate
fewer eggs had lower lev-
els of beneficial metabo-
lites and higher levels of
harmful ones in their
blood, compared to those
who ate eggs more
regularly
.Together, our
results provide a poten-
tial explanation for how
eating a moderate
amount of eggs can
help protect
against heart
disease, says author As-
sociate Prof. Canqing Yu
at Peking University
.
More studies are needed
to verify the causal roles
that lipid metabolites
play in the association
between egg consump-
tion and the risk of car-
diovascular disease.
This study may also
have implications for
Chinese national dietary
guidelines, adds senior
author Liming Li, Boya
Distinguished Professor
at the Peking University
.
Current health guide-
lines in China suggest
eating one egg a day, but
data indicate that the av-
erage consumption is
lowerthanthis.Ourwork
highlights the need for
more strategies to en-
courage moderate egg
consumption among the
population, to help lower
theoverallriskof cardio-
vascular disease.

  • 1. THREE SUICIDES IN HAMIRPUR IN A DAY Janardan Misra Hamirpur: Hamirpur: Three persons commit- ted suicide here on Wednesday in three dif- ferent incidents but for a common reason: fam- ily issues. Police sources here said that Rajendra (27), resident of Pahadi vil- lage under Muskura po- lice station area, was married to Usha four years ago. He had dis- putes with his wife and Usha shifted to her par- ents’ house. When she refused to come back, Rajendra committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan in his room. Uttam Kumar (22), resident of Patan- pur village in Maudha area, also committed suicide by hanging from ceiling fan in his house. He was in depression due to a family dispute. Dileep Kumar Saini (40),residentof Marathi- pura in Maudha area, committed suicide by swallowing poisonous capsules. He was posted at the local girls’ college and was stressed due to debtsandfamilydispute. Janardan Misra Lakhimpur: The elder sister planned and helped in the gang-rape and brutal murder of a minor girl who was strangulated to death with her own cloth after being gang-raped, here in Lakhimpur Kheri under Ramapur police outpost area. Police sources here said that the deceased girl had witnessed her elder sister in an objec- tionable position with her friends and she had threatened her to in- form their parents about her acts. After several spats, the elder sister took her to a farm for defecation where her friends gang- raped her and then murdered her. Police investigations have revealed that Ran- jeet, Amar Singh, An- kit, Sandeep, Deepu and Arjun were in- volved in the crime. Ranjeet Amar Singh and Sandeep Chauhan had gang-raped the mi- nor girl in front of her elder sister while Ar- jun and Deepu were as- sisting them. After the gang-rape and murder, the elder sister calmly returned home and behaved nor- mally in front of family members, police said. More on P7 Elder sister arrested for gang- rape, murder of 13-yr-old girl Prime Minister Narendra Modi MODI: LIVING FOR THE POOR, LEARNING FOR SELF! ignesh Shah, a BJP leader from Gujarat brings to us several anecdotes about our be- lovedPM.Herecallsinstancesfromhisinter- actionswithModijiatapersonallevel. These memories of Modiji as shared by Jignesh Shah paint a clear picture of a world leader who is guided by divine providence and is incredibly pure and wise. The kind of love andpopularity thatPMModienjoysisdueto his extensive knowledge, his magnanim ous heart and his unstinting support to all those inneed.Hisuncannyabilitytokeepaheadof the times and his perspectives on technology that treat it not as a barrier but as a great fa- cilitator, makeshimtheidolof ayoungIndia! In1995-96whenourfirstgovtwasformed, there was a five-day meeting in Chharodi. I came in contact with Modiji at a personal level and even as I recollect my interaction with Modiji of those years, I am filled with emotion. His persona has always been that of an extremely emotional and a simple person who harbours and nurtures feel- ings of compassion for his fellow mates. Once it happened during that 4 day long session that all mins were within the prem- ises for a meeting and their drivers were sitting outside. Modiji came to me and gave his special standing instructio n to me “Al- ways serve food to the drivers first”. He stated a simple reason that supported this instructio n. He explained to me that since the drivers are always moving around with us, whether it is day or night and their duty is extremely tough, they need to be taken care of. They do a selfless service for us which goes much beyond their call of duty . The salary the drivers receive is not ade- quate reward for their devotion. Therefore, we should keep their needs foremost in our mind. Where do we find a world leader so acutely aware of the difficulties of the coo- mon man? I was really very fortunate to have got a chance to know Modiji’s thought- process and ideology from a closer angle. Not just this, we also could see that Modi- ji possessed a deep know-how of technology and had a keen foresight when it came to technicalapplications.Heusedtoliveinone of the rooms of Maninagar RSS Bhawan at that time. One day he asked me if I had a tech-savvy friend who could help him get a computer. I said I had one, Anil Patel, who had a tech business. Anil is in Canada now. Well I ar- ranged for a meeting between Narendraji and my friend and I must admit, I was in awe of Modiji when I wit- nessed him interactin g with Anil. Modiji held a discussion withAnilPatelfornearlyhalf an hour pertaining to comput- ers. I am talking about an era which can easily be termed as the dawn of the computer age in India. Computer s was a new sub- jectinourcountryanditwasextremely rare tofindsomeonepossessing suchdeepknowl- edge of computers. Also people of Modiji’s ageinthosedayswerenotusuallyinterested in this field, and one could forget about dis- cussing the subject at length with someone. Well, after talking through the intrica- cies of computer applicatio ns, Modiji asked Anil if he would mind getting him a computer. Anil agreed readily and then Modiji worked on it, learning more about computer applicatio ns. In the 90’s era wit- nessing a well-know n leader display such interest and ability at computers was a clear inspiration for me. I also recall another motivating aspect of his personality . His room at Maninagar RSS Bhawan was 10 feet by 10 feet. In the middle of theroomwashisbed.Andbelievemeyou, when I used to visit him, I could see that he was engulfed within a sea of books. He had stacked up books up to a height of 6 feet around the bed and in the middle of this ocean of knowledge, Modiji used to be seat- ed, always engrossed in deep study . On his forehead, there used to be the white mark of purity , which is the chandan leip (sandal- wood paste) as we know it. That vision of Modiji, a simple man wearing a dhoti, his face resplendent in the light of wisdom, his physical presence like that of an ascetic, a divine light shone on him as he sat in middle of a room on a bed surrounded with innu- merable books touching ceiling – well, it is notpossibleforanyonewhohasbeenwitness to that vision to remove it from his living memory! Such was the aura, power, I would say a magnetic pull, of Modiji’s persona. I only consider myself extremely fortu- nate because this visage, this divine ap- pearance, manifeste d itself to me during those 4 days! In an August 2021 no- tification, the Union environment ministry had defined SUP com- modities as plastic items intended to be used once for the same purpose before being disposed of or recycled. The notification had also put forward a plan for phasing out selected SUP items. The ban that comes into effect from July 1 covers items such as plastic carry bags (less than 75 micron in thick- ness, to be revised to 120 micron in Decem- ber 2022), earbuds, plas- tic crockery items (spoons, plates, glass- es), straws, and certain kinds of plastic packag- ing material. One of the main concerns with the ban is the fact that the list of banned items is not comprehensive, said Siddharth Singh, programme manager, Solid Waste Manage- ment unit, CSE. For one, the list does not include multi-lay- ered packaging (MLP). CSE researchers point- ed out that MLP is used in almost all FMCGs, from chips to shampoos to gutka pouches. The government says that all packaging ma- terial has been includ- ed as part of the Ex- tended Producer Re- sponsibility (EPR) noti- fication. Under this, the com- panies that manufac- ture or consume this material are required to take it back and send it for reprocessing and annual targets have been fixed for compa- nies on how much is to be recollected. Narain said while this sounds good on pa- per, there are huge problems in the way EPR has been imple- mented. For instance, there is no information on the quantity of this plastic material or the waste the company generates. Not only is it based on self-declaration, but there is nothing availa- ble in the public domain to assess its accuracy . ‘List of banned SUP items not comprehensive; MLP a menace’ FOR ENVIRONMENT  An environment ministry notification had also put forward a plan for phasing out selected SUP items--a ban that will be implemented from July 1 Power Minister AK Sharma along with environment minister Arun Kumar Saxena, CS DS Mishra, and Lucknow Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia flag off the “Flog Run” organised under the campaign of freeing Uttar Pradesh of single-use plastic, at 1090 crossing in Lucknow on Wednesday. —PHOTO BY SUMIT KUMAR MLP MENACE ‘`2 LAKH REWARD FOR BEHEADING KILLERS’ Janardan Mishra Agra/Lucknow: Sev- eral leaders of Hindu outfits protested along with organisation members across UP on Wednesday against the heinous murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Once it happened during that 4 day long session that all mins were within the prem- ises for a meeting and their drivers were sitting outside. Modiji came to me and gave his special standing instruction to me “Al- ways serve food to the drivers first”. He stated a simple reason that supported this instruction. He explained to me that since the drivers are always moving around with us, whether it is day or night and their duty is extremely tough, they need to be taken care of. They do a selfless service for us which goes much beyond their call of duty . The salary the drivers receive is not ade- quate reward for their devotion. One day he asked me if I had a tech-savvy friend who could help him get a computer. I said I had one, Anil Patel, who had a tech business. Anil is in Canada now. Well I ar- ranged for a meeting between Narendraji and my friend and I must admit, I was in awe of Modiji when I wit- nessed him interacting with Anil. Modiji held a discussion withAnilPatelfornearlyhalf an hour pertaining to comput- ers. I am talking about an era which can easily be termed as the dawn of the computer age in India. Computers was a new sub- jectinourcountryanditwasextremelyrare tofindsomeonepossessingsuchdeepknowl- edge of computers. Also people of Modiji’s ageinthosedayswerenotusuallyinterested in this field, and one could forget about dis- cussing the subject at length with someone. Well, after talking through the intrica- cies of computer applications, Modiji asked Anil if he would mind getting him a computer. Anil agreed readily and then Modiji worked on it, learning more about computer applications. In the 90’s era wit- nessing a well-known leader display such interest and ability at computers was a clear inspiration for me. I only consider myself extremely fortu- nate because this visage, this divine ap- pearance, manifested itself to me during those 4 days! And I can say it with convic- tion, in fact I have no doubt about it, what Modiji is doing for our country and the world, he is doing it because he is inspired by some divine force. Our PM is no ordi- nary mortal. All his actions are guided by a calling that goes much deeper and all his works are invariably imbued with the fra- grance of spirituality and wisdom. In the Rajya Sabha elections, its can- didate Imran Pratap- garhi won, but the sec- ond Congress candidate could not win in the Legislative Council elections. The first can- didate and Mumbai Re- gional Congress Presi- dent Bhai Jagtap also won in the second round of counting. Even in his victory, less of the party and his own influence came in handy. Congress has 44 MLAs but got only 41 votes. This means that three MLAs did cross voting. The question is, where did these three MLAs go? Did they vote for BJP or go for NCP in alliance? Keep in mind that voting in the Legis- lative Council elections was done by secret bal- lot. However, informed sources say that the leaders of both Shiv Sena and NCP are an- gry with the aggressive politics of party’s state president Nana Patole and Mumbai regional Congress president Bhai Jagtap. Sharad Pa- war’s party is more an- gry because it feels that the Congress is getting OBC votes through Nana Patole. Till now, Chhagan Bhujbal of NCP was considered to be the biggest OBC lead- er in the alliance. But now it is not so. Second, all the old Congress leaders are either mar- ginalized or deliberate- ly kept silent. Even the old system of communi- cation was not working. The old and traditional leaders of the Congress have been sidelined. AAMIR KHAN DONATES RS 25 L FROM WHERE DID PAWAR GARNER FIVE VOTES? Mahesh Sharma Mumbai: In the elec- tions held for the 10 seats of the Legislative Council in Maharash- tra, after the BJP, it is the NCP that had the best performance. Al- though the NCP has 53 MLAs in the Assembly, two of its MLAs - Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik - are in jail, who were not allowed to cast their votes. Thus its ef- fective strength of MLAs is 51. Despite this, its two candidates got 56 votes in the Leg- islative Council elec- tions. First candidate Eknath Khadse got 29 votes and second candi- date Ramraje Nim- balkar got 27 votes. So the question really is, from where did Pawar’s party juggle five extra votes? After the elec- tion, Eknath Khadse said that his old friends in BJP did cross-voting for him. Keep in mind that Khadse was in the BJP in the past but his claim is not entirely true. BJP leaders have not done cross voting. Had BJP leaders done cross- voting, the number of votes polled by its five candidates would not have reached 133. So, it seems that by talking to the smaller parties and independent MLAs sup- porting the govern- ment, theNCPgarnered five extra votes for it- self. It is also clear that Pawar left both the al- lies on their own terms or ensured that both of them suffer. Keep in mind that both the can- didates of Shiv Sena also won but at least three of its MLAs en- gaged in cross voting. Three Congress MLAs also did cross voting. On the contrary, all NCP MLAs voted for party candidates and on top of that, Pawar gar- nered 5 addl votes. Halala is a practice in which a woman, after being divorced by triple talaq, marries another man, consummates the marriage, and gets di- vorced again in order to be able to remarry her former husband. The victim said she did not file a case against triple talaq to keep her family intact but Ishaq took it as her weakness and sent her messages that he want- ed to accept her as his wife again but she must undergo ‘halala’ with his elder brother. The couple had got married 11 years ago and has two daughters, according to police. The accused, who used to work as a la- bourer, spent his wages on alcohol, which pushed his wife into work, and she started making kites at home to make ends meet. According to Nas- reen’s complaint, a fight broke out between the husband and wife a month ago when their younger daughter fell ill, and Ishaq, under the influence of alco- hol, thrashed her, and gave her triple talaq. WITH EX-HUSBAND’S BROTHER ACCUSED ARRESTED AND SENT TO JAIL, SAY POLICE The woman, who suffered serious injuries on her face, was admitted to the district hospital, and the accused was arrested later that day and sent to jail, police said. Senior Superintendent of Police (Bareilly) Satyarth Anuruddha Pankaj, who visited the hospital, said arrangements have been made for proper treatment of the victim. The counsel for the pe- titioners as well as counsel for the respon- dent no 3 jointly sub- mitted that the matri- monial discord between the parties has been amicably settled and that the respondent no 3 does not proceed with the matter. In this re- gard, a short counter-af- fidavit has also been filed by respondent no 3 and thus the FIR may be quashed. The Court noted, “It is very clear that the petitioners have prima facie committed the said offence. Perusal of the FIR reveals that the same was registered on the basis that cogniza- ble offence is disclosed and thus there is no force in the contention of the counsel for the petitioners that no cog- nizable offence is made out against the peti- tioners. “As the first infor- mant/respondent no 3 has not been medically examined by the police and therefore the provi- sions of Section 376 IPC as alleged cannot be said to be made out. The offence stems out of discordance, which is a reason for lodging of the impugned FIR, but it is shown that the respondent no 3/first informant decided to give up the case and therefore, as the offence under Section 323, 504, 506 IPC are compound- able, the same are per- mitted as compounded. “In view of above, the FIR for the offence committed on October 1 last year i.e before six months, registered in Case under Sections 376, 354, 323, 504, 506 IPC and Section 3/4 of Dowry Prohibition Act, Police Station Main- ather, District Morad- abad, is quashed. Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: Before the elections of the urban bodies to be held in UP by the end of this year, political parties will also have to face the challenge of three-tier elections of coopera- tives. The main contest will be confined around BJP and SP. Recently, BJP has completely curbed the dominance of SP in cooperatives. Notably, three-tier elections are conducted by the Uttar Pradesh State Cooperative Elec- tion Commission. In the first phase, elec- tions will be held for the primary i.e. PACS committees. In the sec- ond phase, elections will be conducted for the district level com- mittees and in the third phase, the management committees of the top cooperative institu- tions will be elected. There are a total of 46434 primary commit- tees, 243 central com- mittees and 50 apex committees in UP. The total number of voters in the elections for these committees is more than 1.5 crore. For the first time in 2017, the elections of cooper- atives were conducted by the commission. These cooperative elections are likely to be held in November this year, for which the model code of conduct may be effective from October. Significantly, for many decades, the SP had complete domina- tion in the cooperative sector of the state. But in 2019, BJP strategists focused on this arena. Under the leadership of the party’s State General Secretary (or- ganization) Sunil Ban- sal, the then coopera- tive minister Mukut Bihari Verma and the office bearers of the re- spective fronts of the party together chalked out a concrete strategy, as a result of the cali- brated move of the par- ty the dominance of the saffron camp has been established in the cooperative sector at the present time. In view of the up- coming elections, re- cently, changes were made in the top posts of cooperative institu- tions of UP. According to a highly placed BJP source, whether it is MP elections, assembly elections, civic polls or cooperative elections, the party makes multi-faceted efforts to win. Now party strate- gists are toiling to meet the election challenges of cooperatives and ur- ban bodies to be held by the end of this year. Ballia (PTI): Samajwa- diPartyallyOmPrakash Rajbhar targeted SP president Akhilesh Ya- dav on Wednesday, say- ing he had become the chief minister only by the grace of his father and that his party had not won any election un- der his leadership since 2014. The Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party president also took swipes at Yadav over the SP’s defeat in the recent Lok Sabha bypolls in Azamgarh and Rampur. On Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s claim that the BJP was going to win all the 80 seats in the next Lok Sabha polls, Rajbhar said it could be possible if the opposition does not re- main united. “What kind of a con- test can you expect from a party whose leader does not take part in the election campaign?” Rajbhar quipped, tak- ing an apparent dig at Akhilesh, who did not campaign either in Azamgarh, the seat he had vacated, or Rampur vacated by Azam Khan. When asked about his recent remarks that Akhilesh was doing pol- itics from an air-condi- tioned room, Rajbhar told reporters, “He be- came the CM not on his own but by the grace of his father Mulayam Singh Yadav.” Known for making hard-hitting comments, Rajbhar fur- ther said, “Akhilesh should tell what work he has done so far on the ground. In how many villages he has held the meeting so far. Mulayam Singh and Shiv Pal Singh Yadav were aware of the situ- ation on the ground.” “The 2012 assembly elections were held un- der the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav. In all the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections held in the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav, be it in 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2022, he has lost,” he added. The SP faced a defeat in the Legislative Coun- cil polls too. “Akhilesh himself should clarify that so far he has not won a single election,” Rajbhar said, adding “Mulayam Singh Yadav istheleaderof themass- es. Akhilesh Yadav has got politics from his fa- ther in legacy .” Lucknow (PTI): A day after a Punjab min- ister accused the erst- while Congress gov- ernment in the state of providing “VIP treat- ment” to jailed gang- ster Mukhtar Ansari, the Uttar Pradesh BJP on Wednesday asked its leaders what the party got in return for such favour. The BJP alleged that gangster-turned-politi- cian Ansari engaged in immoral and illegal activities from inside the Punjab jail, and asked Congress lead- ers Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra why such spe- cial treatment was ex- tended to him. The BJP’s attack came a day after Pun- jab minister Harjot Singh Bains accused the previous Congress regime of providing VIP treatment to Ansa- ri when he was lodged at Rupnagar jail in the state. “Congress lends a helping hand to crimi- nals and mafias. BJP leader Alka Rai, the wife of slain Krish- nanand Rai, had writ- ten several letters to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asking her not to patronise a crimi- nal. The UP govern- ment had approached the Supreme Court to bring Ansari back to UP but the then Punjab government opposed it as it wanted to provide all facilities to him,” BJP spokesman Rakesh Tripathi said. “I want to ask Rahul and Priyanka why they were giving these facil- ities to Ansari. What Congress got in return for providing these fa- cilities to a gangster. The current govern- ment is establishing that Ansari was in- volved in immoral and illegal activities from inside the jail,” he said. The findings suggest that eating up to one egg per day may help lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Eggs are a rich source of dietary cholesterol, but they also contain a varietyof essentialnutri- ents. There is conflicting evidence as to whether egg consumption is ben- eficial or harmful to heart health. A 2018 study published in the journal Heart, which included approxi- mately half a million adults in China, found that those who ate eggs daily (about one egg per day) had a substantially lower risk of heart dis- ease and stroke than those who ate eggs less frequently . Now, to better under- stand this relationship, the authors of this work have carried out a popu- lation-based study ex- ploring how egg con- sumption affects mark- ers of cardiovascular health in the blood. Few studies have looked at the role that plasma cholesterol me- tabolism plays in the association between egg consumption and theriskof cardiovascu- lardiseases,sowewant- ed to help address this gap, explains first au- thorLangPan,MScatthe Peking University, Bei- jing, China. EGGS CAN BOOST HEART HEALTH Pan and the team select- ed 4,778 participants from the China Ka- doorie Biobank, of whom 3,401 had car- diovascular disease and 1,377 did not. They used a technique called targeted nuclear magnet- ic resonance to measure 225metabolitesinplasma samples taken from the participants' blood. Of these metabolites, they identified24thatwereas- sociated with self-report- ed levels of egg consump- tion.Their analyses showed that individuals who ate a moderate amountof eggshadhigh- er levels of a protein in their blood called apoli- poprotein A1 — a build- ing block of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as 'good lipopro- tein'. These individuals especiallyhadmorelarge HDL molecules in their blood, which help clear cholesterol from the bloodvesselsandthereby protectagainstblockages that can lead to heart at- tacks and stroke. The researchers fur- theridentified14metabo- lites that are linked to heartdisease.Theyfound that participants who ate fewer eggs had lower lev- els of beneficial metabo- lites and higher levels of harmful ones in their blood, compared to those who ate eggs more regularly .Together, our results provide a poten- tial explanation for how eating a moderate amount of eggs can help protect against heart disease, says author As- sociate Prof. Canqing Yu at Peking University . More studies are needed to verify the causal roles that lipid metabolites play in the association between egg consump- tion and the risk of car- diovascular disease. This study may also have implications for Chinese national dietary guidelines, adds senior author Liming Li, Boya Distinguished Professor at the Peking University . Current health guide- lines in China suggest eating one egg a day, but data indicate that the av- erage consumption is lowerthanthis.Ourwork highlights the need for more strategies to en- courage moderate egg consumption among the population, to help lower theoverallriskof cardio- vascular disease.
