In1995-96whenourfirstgovtwasformed,
there was a five-day meeting in Chharodi.
I came in contact with Modiji at a personal
level and even as I recollect my interaction
with Modiji of those years, I am filled with
emotion. His persona has always been that
of an extremely
emotional and a simple
person who harbours
and nurtures feel-
ings of compassion for his fellow mates.
Once it happened
during that 4 day long
session that all mins were within the prem-
ises for a meeting and their drivers were
sitting outside. Modiji came to me and gave
his special standing instructio
n to me “Al-
ways serve food to the drivers first”. He
stated a simple reason that supported
this
instructio
n. He explained
to me that since
the drivers are always moving around with
us, whether it is day or night and their duty
is extremely
tough, they need to be taken
care of. They do a selfless service for us
which goes much beyond their call of duty
.
The salary the drivers receive is not ade-
quate reward for their devotion. Therefore,
we should keep their needs foremost in our
mind. Where do we find a world leader so
acutely aware of the difficulties of the coo-
mon man? I was really very fortunate
to
have got a chance to know Modiji’s thought-
process and ideology from a closer angle.
Not just this, we also could see that Modi-
ji possessed a deep know-how
of technology
and had a keen foresight when it came to
technicalapplications.Heusedtoliveinone
of the rooms of Maninagar RSS Bhawan at
that time. One day he asked me if I had a
tech-savvy friend who could help him
get a computer.
I said I had one, Anil
Patel, who had a tech business.
Anil is in Canada now. Well I ar-
ranged for a meeting between
Narendraji and my friend
and I must admit, I was in
awe of Modiji when I wit-
nessed him interactin
g with
Anil. Modiji held a discussion
withAnilPatelfornearlyhalf
an hour pertaining to comput-
ers. I am talking about an era
which can easily be termed as
the dawn of the computer age in
India. Computer
s was a new sub-
jectinourcountryanditwasextremely
rare
tofindsomeonepossessing
suchdeepknowl-
edge of computers. Also people of Modiji’s
ageinthosedayswerenotusuallyinterested
in this field, and one could forget about dis-
cussing the subject at length with someone.
Well, after talking through the intrica-
cies of computer
applicatio
ns, Modiji
asked Anil if he would mind getting him a
computer. Anil agreed readily and then
Modiji worked on it, learning more about
computer
applicatio
ns. In the 90’s era wit-
nessing a well-know
n leader display such
interest and ability at computers was a
clear inspiration for me.
I also recall another motivating aspect of
his personality
. His room at Maninagar RSS
Bhawan was 10 feet by 10 feet. In the middle
of theroomwashisbed.Andbelievemeyou,
when I used to visit him, I could see that he
was engulfed within a sea of books. He had
stacked up books up to a height of 6 feet
around the bed and in the middle of this
ocean of knowledge, Modiji used to be seat-
ed, always engrossed
in deep study
. On his
forehead, there used to be the white mark of
purity
, which is the chandan leip (sandal-
wood paste) as we know it. That vision of
Modiji, a simple man wearing a dhoti, his
face resplendent in the light of wisdom, his
physical presence like that of an ascetic, a
divine light shone on him as he sat in middle
of a room on a bed surrounded with innu-
merable books touching ceiling – well, it is
notpossibleforanyonewhohasbeenwitness
to that vision to remove it from his living
memory! Such was the aura, power, I would
say a magnetic pull, of Modiji’s persona.
I only consider myself extremely
fortu-
nate because this visage, this divine ap-
pearance, manifeste
d itself to me during
those 4 days! And I can say it with convic-
tion, in fact I have no doubt about it, what
Modiji is doing for our country and the
world, he is doing it because he is inspired
by some divine force. Our PM is no ordi-
nary mortal. All his actions are guided by
a calling that goes much deeper and all his
works are invariably imbued with the fra-
grance of spirituality and wisdom.

T
here were about 32-35 ministers in
that session and from among the
3-4 people chosen from Gujarat,
Modiji selected me as a karyakarta. That
was when I got the golden opportunity to
live with him and get to know him for 4
days. I came in contact with Modiji at a
personal level and even as I recollect my
interaction with Modiji of those years, I
am filled with emotion.

of a tailor in Udaipur,
saying the Congress
government remained a
“mute spectator” as the
party’s “internal rival-
ries” took a toll on the
state’s law and order.
The information and
broadcasting minister
was responding to re-
marks by Rajasthan CM
Gehlot that the PM and
HM should address the
nation over the “grow-
ing” communal tension
in the country
.
Thakur said law and
order is a state issue and
alleged the CM has al-
ways “shirked responsi-
bility”. “This is not the
first example. There are
several examples where
incidents have hap-
pened but this time all
limits were crossed. It is
highly condemnable,”
Thakur told reporters,
responding to questions
on the killing of Kan-
haiya Lal in Udaipur on
Monday by two men for
allegedly insulting Is-
lam.
Lal was “beheaded”
by the two men, identi-
fied as Riaz Akhtari and
Ghouse Mohammad,
with a cleaver in
Udaipur city’s Dhan
Mandi area. They also
posted videos online.

New Delhi (PTI): De-
scribing the education
and healthcare system in
the national capital “ex-
cellent”, Delhi Chief
Minister Arvind Kejri-
wal on Wednesday hoped
that senior BJP leaders
who have arrived from
Gujarat to “inspect” the
mohalla clinics and
schools will learn from
them and improve such
facilities back home.
A 17-member delega-
tion of the BJP’s Gujarat
unit is in the national
capital since Tuesday to
look into what it called
the “fake” Delhi model
of governance.
“Many senior leaders
of Gujarat BJP have
come to see mohalla
clinics and schools in
Delhi. I hope that by
learning from Delhi’s ex-
cellent education and
health system, they will
improve Gujarat as
well,” Kejriwal tweeted
in Hindi.
“We will all learn from
each other. Only then
will India move for-
ward,” he added.
Kejriwal has deployed
some of his Aam Aadmi
Party (AAP) legislators,
including Kalkaji MLA
Atishi, to welcome the
Gujarat BJP delegation
and accompany them in
their visits to Delhi gov-
ernment schools, mohal-
la clinics and hospitals.
Following Kejriwal’s
instruction, Atishi and
Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha
on Tuesday gave an open
invitation to the Gujarat
BJP leaders, urging them
to come to the AAP head-
quarters so that they
could be taken to the
places they wished to
“inspect”.
Five AAP MLAs have
been deputed to take the
BJP delegation on the
tour, Deputy Chief
Minister Manish
Sisodia said in a series of
tweets.
Even as the Gujarat
BJP delegation did not
give any response to the
AAP’s open invitation,
the Arvind Kejriwal-led
party on Wednesday
made an arrangement
for their visit to a govern-

The Delhi govern-
ment will procure
1,950 buses and issue
fresh tenders for an-
other 4,800 buses,
taking the fleet to
over 11,000 on the
capital’s roads by
December 2024,
Chief Minister
Arvind Kejriwal on
Wednesday.
He said that a slew
of other decisions
were also taken dur-
ing the cabinet meet-
ing on Wednesday

“Delhi government
will now make public
transport more com-
fortable and world-
class. We will focus on
integrating and mod-
ernising the trans-
port sector and mak-
ing it at par with in-
ternational stand-
ards,” Kejriwal said
in a digital media
briefing.
He also said the
Delhi government
has decided to extend

The chief minister

will hire experts to

farming initiative
that was announced
in the budget.

that the accused cheat-

of India (ICAI) and
thousands of students,
a Delhi court has con-
victed a former princi-
pal of DAV Public
School and two others
in connection with the
leak of the Common
Proficiency Test (CPT)
exam in 2007.
Metropolitan Magis-
trate Paras Dalal con-
victed the three accused
— former DAV school
principal Bhawna Ma-
lik, centre superinten-
dent Diksha Dhingra
and one Sudesh Kumar,
who provided invigila-
tors.
Malik and Diksha
Dhingra were convicted
for the offence under
sections 420 (cheating
and dishonestly induc-
ing delivery of proper-
ty) and 120(B) (punish-
ment of criminal con-
spiracy) of the Indian
Penal Code (IPC). The
accused Sudesh Kumar,
who provided invigila-
tors for the examina-
tion was also convicted
under section 120(B) on
June 27.
The matter came to
light on the complaint
of the ICAI chairman
who saw a sting
operation aired on a tel-
evision channel un-
earthing the leak of the
CPT at the school
branch in West Patel
Nagar.
Delhi Lieutenant Gov-
ernor V K Saxena
Tuesday wrote to
Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal and said that
Deputy CM Manish
Sisodia was trying to
“mislead the public”
regarding the enquiry
initiated against Pub-
lic Works Department
(PWD) officers in the
case relating to the
construction of seven
hospitals in city.
Saxena had granted
ACB permission to in-
vestigate the case, a
complaint for which
was filed by BJP MP
Manoj Tiwari. Sisodia
has called the com-
plaint frivolous, and
had said the L-G did not
have authority to give
sanction for the investi-
gation.

wood Park’ in the city,
envisioned to showcase
the history of Indian
cinema and its evolu-
tion through artefacts
made of waste materi-
als, official sources
said.
The Municipal Cor-
poration of Delhi
(MCD) plans to con-
struct a ‘Bollywood
Park’ in Jangpura in
south Delhi on lines of
its popular “Waste-to-
Wonder” park where
scrap material has been
used to erect replicas of
the ‘seven wonders of
the world.’ According to
official sources, by now
the tenders for the con-
struction and design
outlay of the park
should have been float-
ed, but there has been
“no progress” on the
project because of the
fund crunch.

New Delhi (Agencies):
The Shahi Imam of Delhi
Jama Masjid, Syed Ah-
med Bukhari, has called
the murder of Udaipur
tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli
“not only an act of cow-
ardice but an act against
Islam”. In a statement,
Bukhari said: “The inhu-
man incident on the mur-
der of a man named Kan-
haiya Lal by two persons
named Riaz and Ghous,
and that too in the name
of the Holy Prophet, is
not only an act of cow-
ardice but an act against
Islam, unlawful and in-
human. I, myself and on
behalf of the Muslims of
India, with all the vehe-
mence at our disposal,
condemn this act.”
The tailor was mur-
dered in broad daylight
in his shop Tuesday by
Riyaz Akhtari and Gho-
use Mohammed for alleg-
edly putting up social
media posts in support
of suspended BJP spo-
kesperson Nupur Shar-
ma’s controversial com-
ments on the Prophet.
The duo have been ar-
rested. The case is being
probed by counter-ter-
rorism task force, the Na-
tional Investigation
Agency. Bukhari also
said Islam was a religion
of “peace and tranquili-
ty”. “The life of the
Prophet of Allah (peace
be upon him) is full of
numerous examples of
compassion, tolerance,
generosity and humani-
tarianism. Had the per-
sons who committed this
barbaric act studied the
life and character of the
Holy Prophet and had
they been well versed
with the spirit of Quran
and shariah, they would
not have committed the
heinous crime”.

Each district is allot-
ted scores out of a total
of 600 points across 83
indicators which are
grouped under six cat-
egories: Outcomes, Ef-
fective Classroom
Transaction, Infra-
structure Facilities
Student’s Entitlements,
School Safety Child
Protection, Digital
Learning and Govern-
ance Process.
Interestingly, the dis-
tricts in Delhi fared bet-
ter in the Digital Learn-
ing category, compared
to other states.
In the 2019-2020 re-
port, as many as 180 dis-
tricts scored less than
10 per cent on digital
learning, 146 districts
scored between 11%
and 20%, while 125 dis-
tricts had scores be-
tween 21% and 30%.
All of Delhi’s dis-
tricts scored over 25 out
of 50 in this category
.
New Delhi (PTI): Dis-
ciplinary action will be
taken against officials
proceeding on leave
without approval, the
Delhi government’s so-

departments have

sued circulars to clarify

ceeded on leave repeat-

proval of the Secretary

not a matter of right.
Henceforth, any kind of
leave availed without

tary (SW/WCD) by dep-
uty directors and senior
superintendents will be
treated as un-author-
ized absence, and action
as deemed fit may be
initiated as per rules,”

Devi, the victim last to
be identified, was cre-
mated by her relatives
on Wednesday, a senior
police officer said.

rites of Geeta Devi were
performed in a cemetery
in northwest Delhi’s Sul-
tanpuri area. “May the
soul of all the 27 deceased
in this incident rest in
peace. The relatives of
Geeta came from Bihar.

cremation,” Sharma said.

Earlier, police had said
that the body of Geeta
Devi was kept in the hos-
pital, as she was an or-
phan and her husband
too had died. She did not
have any children.
The Forensic Science
Lab had initially faced
difficulty in confirming
her identity due to unsat-
isfactory results from the
blood samples collected
from her “siblings”, but
at length she was con-
nected with her relatives,
who cremated her.

that the Congress party
has fallen alone in Ma-
harashtra. In the Rajya
Sabha elections, its can-
didate Imran Pratap-
garhi won, but the sec-
ond Congress candidate
could not win in the
Legislative Council
elections. The first can-
didate and Mumbai Re-
gional Congress Presi-
dent Bhai Jagtap also
won in the second
round of counting.
Even in his victory, less
of the party and his
own influence came in
handy. Congress has 44
MLAs but got only 41
votes. This means that
three MLAs did cross
voting. The question is,
where did these three
MLAs go? Did they vote
for BJP or go for NCP in
alliance? Keep in mind
that voting in the Legis-
lative Council elections
was done by secret bal-
lot. However, informed
sources say that the
leaders of both Shiv
Sena and NCP are an-
gry with the aggressive
politics of party’s state
president Nana Patole
and Mumbai regional
Congress president
Bhai Jagtap. Sharad Pa-
war’s party is more an-
gry because it feels that
the Congress is getting
OBC votes through
Nana Patole. Till now,
Chhagan Bhujbal of
NCP was considered to
be the biggest OBC lead-
er in the alliance. But
now it is not so. Second,
all the old Congress
leaders are either mar-
ginalized or deliberate-
ly kept silent. Even the
old system of communi-
cation was not working.

a 28% tax on casinos, on-

June 30. The GoM had

line gaming should be

About a dozen states on
Wednesday pitched for
extending by a few years
the compensation paid
to states for revenue lost
from the implementa-
tion of GST regime. The
GST Council, the highest
decision-making body of
the indirect tax regime,
however, did not take any
decision at its meeting
here. A final decision is
likely to be taken in the
next GST council meeting
in the first week of August.
While all eyes were set on
extension of GST com-
pensation mechanism for
states and a highest 28 %
tax rate on online gaming,
casinos and horse racing,
a Group of Ministers report
on online gaming, casinos,
horse racing deferred. GoM
will now submit sugges-
tions on regulations in 15
days. The GOM, headed by
Meghalaya CM Sangma,
had recommended that
online gaming should be
taxed at full value.

New Delhi: A day after an Udaipur man was found
beheaded for supporting Nupur Sharma, former BJP
party leader Naveen Kumar Jindal on
Wed claimed to have received similar
threats. In a letter to Delhi Police, Jindal
said that he has received three emails
containing threats. “They have threat-
ened to kill me like Kanhaiya Lal was
killed in Udaipur. They have attached video of killing
of Kanhaiya Lal to scare me,” Jindal tweeted.
Chhattisgarh: Maoists in Chhattisgarh have alleg-
edly killed a sarpanch suspecting him to be a police
informer in Bijapur district of Bastar division, police
said, adding that the incident took place on the in-
tervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.“Maoists
killed Ratiram Kudiyam, the sarpanch of Mormed
village under the Toynar police station area, on the
intervening night of Tues and Wed.

over 2 lakh applications
New Delhi (PTI): The
Indian Air Force (IAF)
has received over 1.83
lakh applications under
the Agnipath recruit-
ment scheme within six
days of the registration
process, an official com-
munication said.The
registration process
that began on June 24
had seen filing of 94,281
applications by Mon-
day, and 56,960 applica-
tions till Sunday
.
After the scheme was
unveiled on June 14, vi-
olent protests against it
rocked several states for
nearly a week, and sev-
eral opposition parties
demanded its rollback.
“So far, 1,83,634 future
Agniveers have applied
on the registration web-
site. Registration closes
on July 5, 2022,” the IAF
said on Twitter. Under
the scheme, the govern-
ment had said youths
between the ages of
17-and-a-half and 21
years would be induct-
ed for a four-year-ten-
ure, while 25 per cent of
them will be subse-
quently inducted for
regular service.

Amaravati (ANI): Even as the govt has rolled out
the Agnipath scheme, the National Students Union
of India (NSUI) has intensified its protests in Andhra
Pradesh. The student organisation led agitations in
three universities over three days. Setting out on a
‘Students Satyagrah’ from Krishna Devaraya Univer-

heart and his unstinting support to all those

that treat it not as a barrier but as a great fa-

In1995-96whenourfirstgovtwasformed,
there was a five-day meeting in Chharodi.
I came in contact with Modiji at a personal
level and even as I recollect my interaction
with Modiji of those years, I am filled with
emotion. His persona has always been that
of an extremely emotional and a simple
person who harbours and nurtures feel-
ings of compassion for his fellow mates.
Once it happened during that 4 day long
session that all mins were within the prem-
ises for a meeting and their drivers were
sitting outside. Modiji came to me and gave
his special standing instruction to me “Al-
ways serve food to the drivers first”. He
stated a simple reason that supported this
instruction. He explained to me that since
the drivers are always moving around with
us, whether it is day or night and their duty
is extremely tough, they need to be taken
care of. They do a selfless service for us
which goes much beyond their call of duty
.
The salary the drivers receive is not ade-
quate reward for their devotion. Therefore,
we should keep their needs foremost in our
mind. Where do we find a world leader so
acutely aware of the difficulties of the coo-
mon man? I was really very fortunate to
have got a chance to know Modiji’s thought-
process and ideology from a closer angle.
Not just this, we also could see that Modi-
ji possessed a deep know-how of technology
and had a keen foresight when it came to
technicalapplications.Heusedtoliveinone
of the rooms of Maninagar RSS Bhawan at
that time. One day he asked me if I had a
tech-savvy friend who could help him
get a computer. I said I had one, Anil
Patel, who had a tech business.
Anil is in Canada now. Well I ar-
ranged for a meeting between
Narendraji and my friend
and I must admit, I was in
awe of Modiji when I wit-
nessed him interacting with
Anil. Modiji held a discussion
withAnilPatelfornearlyhalf
an hour pertaining to comput-
ers. I am talking about an era
which can easily be termed as
the dawn of the computer age in
India. Computers was a new sub-
jectinourcountryanditwasextremelyrare
tofindsomeonepossessingsuchdeepknowl-
edge of computers. Also people of Modiji’s
ageinthosedayswerenotusuallyinterested
in this field, and one could forget about dis-
cussing the subject at length with someone.
Well, after talking through the intrica-
cies of computer applications, Modiji
asked Anil if he would mind getting him a
computer. Anil agreed readily and then
Modiji worked on it, learning more about
computer applications. In the 90’s era wit-
nessing a well-known leader display such
interest and ability at computers was a
clear inspiration for me.
I also recall another motivating aspect of
his personality
. His room at Maninagar RSS
Bhawan was 10 feet by 10 feet. In the middle
of theroomwashisbed.Andbelievemeyou,
when I used to visit him, I could see that he
was engulfed within a sea of books. He had
stacked up books up to a height of 6 feet
around the bed and in the middle of this
ocean of knowledge, Modiji used to be seat-
ed, always engrossed in deep study
. On his
forehead, there used to be the white mark of
purity
, which is the chandan leip (sandal-
wood paste) as we know it. That vision of
Modiji, a simple man wearing a dhoti, his
face resplendent in the light of wisdom, his
physical presence like that of an ascetic, a
divine light shone on him as he sat in middle
of a room on a bed surrounded with innu-
merable books touching ceiling – well, it is
notpossibleforanyonewhohasbeenwitness
to that vision to remove it from his living
memory! Such was the aura, power, I would
say a magnetic pull, of Modiji’s persona.
I only consider myself extremely fortu-
nate because this visage, this divine ap-
pearance, manifested itself to me during
those 4 days! And I can say it with convic-
tion, in fact I have no doubt about it, what
Modiji is doing for our country and the
world, he is doing it because he is inspired
by some divine force. Our PM is no ordi-
nary mortal. All his actions are guided by
a calling that goes much deeper and all his
works are invariably imbued with the fra-
grance of spirituality and wisdom.

Sebi penalises NSE, former chief
Chitra, 16 others in ‘dark fibre’ case
New Delhi (PTI): Sebi
has imposed a penalty
totalling `44 crore on 18
entities, including Na-
tional Stock Exchange
(NSE), its business de-
velopment officer Ravi
Varanasi, former MD
and CEO Chitra Ram-
krishna and her adviser
Subramanian Anand
along with certain stock
brokers in the ‘dark fi-
bre’ case.
Apart from NSE and
its former officials, oth-
ers penalised by Sebi
are stock brokers --Way-
2Wealth Brokers and
GKN Securities-- Sam-
park Infotainment and
their respective em-
ployees. The regulator
has imposed a penalty
of `7 crore on NSE, `5
crore each on Ram-
krishna, Varanasi and
Subramanian Anand,
who was Group Operat-
ing Officer and adviser
to then MD Chitra.
Also, Sebi levied a
fine of `1 crore each on
Nagendra Kumar SRVS
and Deviprasad Singh.

ployed by ITR, includ-
ing radar and electro-

tem. ABHYAS is de-

death toll due to floods
in the state rose to 139
after five more people
lost their lives in the
past 24 hours. Out of the
five deaths, three were

24.92 lakh people have
been affected by the
floods in 28 districts of
Assam, reported PTI.
On Monday, 21.52 lakh
people were affected

mark. However, waters
are reportedly receding
in most of the other riv-

tra, after the BJP, it is

best performance. Al-
though the NCP has 53
MLAs in the Assembly,
two of its MLAs - Anil
Deshmukh and Nawab
Malik - are in jail, who
were not allowed to cast
their votes. Thus its ef-
fective strength of
MLAs is 51. Despite
this, its two candidates
got 56 votes in the Leg-
islative Council elec-
tions. First candidate
Eknath Khadse got 29
votes and second candi-
date Ramraje Nim-
balkar got 27 votes. So
the question really is,
from where did Pawar’s
party juggle five extra
votes? After the elec-
tion, Eknath Khadse
said that his old friends
in BJP did cross-voting
for him. Keep in mind
that Khadse was in the
BJP in the past but his
claim is not entirely
true.
BJP leaders have not
done cross voting. Had
BJP leaders done cross-
voting, the number of
votes polled by its five
candidates would not
have reached 133. So, it
seems that by talking to
the smaller parties and
independent MLAs sup-
porting the govern-
ment,theNCPgarnered
five extra votes for it-
self. It is also clear that
Pawar left both the al-
lies on their own terms
or ensured that both of

markets regulator
Sebi on Wednesday
decided to allow FPIs

exchange-traded
commodity deriv-
atives segment, a
move that will further
increase depth and
liquidity in the market.
The board of Sebi,
during its meeting
held on Wednesday,
also approved amend-
ments to rules gov-
erning mutual funds

Marine exports
up 30% to $8
bn in FY22
New Delhi (PTI): Ex-
ports of marine prod-
ucts rose 30.26% to
$7.76 billion during
2021-22 as against
$5.96 billion in pre-
vious fiscal year, the
commerce ministry
said on Wednesday.
India shipped
13,69,264 MT (met-
ric tonne) of seafood
worth Rs 57,586.48
crore during 2021-
22. “During 2021-22,
the export improved
in rupee term by
31.71%, in $ terms
by 30.26% and
in quantity terms
by 19.12%,” the
ministry said in a

expects the movie
exhibition industry to
bounce back “dynam-
ically” in FY23 and
plans to open as
many as 125 screens
during the year. “The
company is restarting
its capex cycle from
FY 2022-23 and has
plans of opening 125
screens this year,
breaking its own
record of opening 87
screens in FY 2019-
20. The company had
opened 29 screens
across 5 properties in
FY 2021-22,” it said.

Housing sales jumped
over 4.5 times year-on-
year in April-June
across eight cities to
74,330 units on lower
base effect, while de-
mand was up 5% from
the previous quarter,
according to PropTiger
data.
Housing sales stood
at 15,968 units in the
April-June period last
year and 70,623 units in
the January-March
quarter of 2022.
The price of residen-
tial properties rose
5-9% annually, driven
by rise in input costs,
inflationary pressures
and premium attached
with ready-to-move-in
inventory. Pune and
Chennai saw maximum
appreciation at 9%
each.
The biggest booster
to housing demand has
been the increased im-
portance of owning a
property, he said.

consumer confidence in
the overall economic
scenario and impending
income stability

As per the data, Del-
hi-NCR market saw 60%
increase in sales to 4,520
units during April-June
2022, from 2,830 units in
the year-ago period.
But, sales fell 10 per
cent from 5,010 units in
the previous quarter.
The sales of residen-
tial properties jumped
to 7,910 units in the
April-June period. It
was at 2,430 units a year
ago. The demand was
up 21% compared to
6,560 units sold in Janu-
ary-March 2022.
During April-June
2022, PropTiger said
that 20% of the units
sold were ready-to-
move-in, while remain-
ing 80% were under
construction. Majority
(26%) of the sales were
concentrated in `45-75
lakh price range. Resi-
dential demand is 80%
closer to the pre-pan-
demic levels of Q2 2019.
On the supply side,
the launches of new
homes jumped to
1,02,130 units during

The GST Council on
Wednesday deferred de-
cision on levying a 28%
tax on casinos, online
gaming, horse racing
and lottery pending
more consultations
with stakeholders, Un-
ion Finance Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman
said.
A group of ministers
headed by Meghalaya
Chief Minister Conrad
Sangma has been asked
to consider submis-
sions of stakeholders
again on the valuation
mechanism and submit
its report by July 15, she
told reporters here.
The council will meet
again in the first week
of August to decide on
the issue, she said.
A two-day meeting of
the panel considered a
report of the GoM but
deferred a decision as
Goa and some others
wanted to make more
submissions.
The GoM had recom-
mended that online
gaming should be taxed
at the full value of the
consideration, includ-
ing the contest entry fee
paid by the player on
participating in the
game.
In cases of race
courses, it had suggest-
ed that GST be levied on
the full value of bets
pooled in the totalisa-
tors and placed with the
bookmakers.
It also recommended
that no distinction
should be made on
grounds of game of
skill or game of chance
for the purpose of the
levy of GST and should
be taxed at the highest
rate of 28%.

Wednesday pitched for
extending the mech-
anism to compensate
states for revenue lost
from the implementation
of GST beyond June
30, but no decision
was taken. Briefing
reporters, FM Nirmala
Sitharaman said finance
and other ministers of
16 states spoke on the
compensation issue. Of
the 16 states, 3-4 spoke
of evolving their own
revenue stream to break
from the compensation
mechanism, she said.
The Centre did not reveal
its mind on the issue.
The Council - the highest
decision-making body of
the indirect tax regime,
which is headed by the
Union Finance Minister
and comprises represen-
tatives of all states and
UTs - discussed the issue
at a meeting here but did
not take a decision.

New Delhi (PTI):
The government on
Wednesday decided
to give marketing
freedom to domestic
crude oil producers,
allowing them to sell
oil to whosoever they
want.
Briefing reporters
on the decisions tak-
en at a meeting of the
Union Minister Anu-
rag Thakur said the
Cabinet approved
deregulation of the
sale of domestically
produced crude oil.
From October 1,
condition in PSC to
sell crude oil to the
government or its
nominee or govern-
ment companies will
be waived.
This essentially
means producers
will be free to sell oil
from their fields in
the domestic market.
Jet Airways in talks to lease 6-8 planes by December

Airways is in discus-
sions with aircraft

sors to lease 6-8 planes,

those which were to be

carriers prior to the
Ukraine war, as it gets
ready for the relaunch,
according to sources.
Moreover, the air-
line is also negotiating
with airport operators
to secure slots with
“good” timings, they

The carrier has not
flown since April 17,

New Delhi (PTI): SpiceJet, in partnership with online
visa platform Visa2Fly, on Wednesday launched an
online visa service for people travelling to select
countries such as Thailand, UAE, Bangladesh and
Sri Lanka. “The service is available for all travellers
irrespective of the airline they are travelling on,”
SpiceJet’s statement noted. It will be a four step
process. The traveller needs to book an appointment
online post which the executive will physically collect
and verify the documents. This will be followed by

Steel prices likely

a record low of 79.03 (provisional) against the US dollar
on Wednesday, weighed down by persistent foreign cap-
ital outflows, a strong dollar overseas and surge in crude
oil prices. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the
rupee opened lower at 78.86 against the greenback and
finally settled at 79.03, down 18 paise over its previous
close. During the session, the rupee touched an all-time
low of 79.05 against the American currency.

Patna (PTI): All but
one of the five MLAs of
the AIMIM in Bihar on
Wednesday joined the
RJD, making it the larg-
est party in the
243-strong assembly, a
development hailed by
the leader of the oppo-
sition Tejashwi Yadav
as “strengthening of
secular forces” in the
NDA-ruled state.
Yadav, who is now
the RJD’s de facto lead-
er, took the four MLAs
to the assembly in a car
he himself drove, in a
gesture that was rich in
optics as well as sym-
bolism.
Speaker Vijay Ku-
mar Sinha was handed
over a communication
announcing the MLAs’
desire to be treated as a
separate group and its
merger with the RJD,
thereby raising its ef-
fective strength in the
House to 80, three more
than that of the BJP
.
A beaming Yadav
emerged from the
Speaker’s chamber,
along with the four
MLAs and old confi-
dants, and left the as-
sembly premises re-
sponding to congratu-
latory messages.
The MLAs who have
jumped ship are Syed
Ruknuddin Ahmed
(Baisi), Shahnawaz
Alam (Jokihat), Mohd
Izhar Asfi (Kochadha-
man) and Mohd Anzar
Naeemi (Bahadur-
ganj).
The party
, headed by
Asaduddin Owaisi,
which had made a
splash by winning five
seats in the assembly
elections of 2020, is
now left with only its
state president
Akhtarul Iman who
represents Amour.
All the five seats that
the AIMIM had won
fall under the Kis-
hanganj and Araria
Lok Sabha constituen-
cies, which have the
highest concentration
of Muslim population
in Bihar.
Notably, Jokihat
MLA Shahnawaz Alam
happens to be the son of
late Mohd Taslimuddin,
an RJD veteran and a
former Union minister.
Alam had made a suc-
cessful election debut in
a by-poll in 2018 when
he contested on an RJD
ticket but denial of the
same in the assembly
elections two years lat-
er made him quit the
party
.
The RJD had fielded
his elder brother Sar-
faraz Alam, who has
been in the political
wilderness since losing
Araria Lok Sabha seat
to the BJP in 2019 and
who lost to the younger
sibling by a margin of
less than 10,000 votes.

Patna (PTI): The opposition in Bihar
boycotted the assembly proceed-
ings on Wednesday, the penultimate
day of the monsoon session,
to press the demand for a
discussion on the Agnipath
scheme. The announcement
of boycott was made on the
previous day by the leader
of the opposition Tejashwi
Yadav who refused to
buy the Chair’s
contention that
the matter
fell outside the state’s purview.
However, showers since morning
literally poured cold water on the
opposition MLAs’ plans to stage a
demonstration right in front
of the imposing assembly
building. They took shelter in
various corners of the sprawl-
ing premises and, when
proceedings began, stood
outside the assembly hall,
shouting slogans for
a few minutes and
dispersed.

them, they said.

Fatima, who is under-
going treatment in the

cused the police of not

ment has directed that

vilian awards, such as

molished, sending a
wave of grief among
heritage lovers.
Bulldozers gnawed at
the elegant two-storey
main Patna Collectorate
building, situated on the
banks of the river Gan-
ga, a couple of days ago,
reducing it to a skeletal
state. The building was
felled as part of the rede-
velopment project of the
Bihar government.
On Wednesday, la-
bourers carried away
bricks from the moun-
tains of rubble that lay
deposited next to what
remained of the old
building, which once
was the seat of the dis-
trict administration and
was said to have been
constructed in the early
20th century
.
The building was also
adorned with an ornate
iron-made spiral stair-
case mounted on its
western facade.
Heritage lovers of the
city had earlier appealed
to the authorities to res-
cue its historical arte-
facts, such as the old
safety vaults, clocks and
furniture, hanging sky-
lights, the spiral stair-
case, a vintage steam-
roller, and a very old
printing machine, as
buildings on the Collec-
torate campus were an-
nounced to undergo a
phase-wise demolition.

After 3-year gap, Amarnath
Yatra all set to begin today
Srinagar (PTI): The
43-day Amarnath Yatra
to the holy cave shrine
located in south Kash-
mir Himalayas is all set
to begin on Thursday
after a gap of three
years.
All arrangements
have been put in place
by the Shri Amarnath
Shrine Board (SASB) to
ensure smooth pilgrim-
age to the naturally
formed ice-lingam at
the cave shrine, offi-
cials said.
Jammu and Kashmir
Lieutenant Governor
Manoj Sinha on
Wednesday morning
flagged off the first
batch of pilgrims from
Jammu base camp.
The first batch of
4,890 pilgrims left
around 4 am from the
Bhagwati Nagar base
camp for Kashmir Val-
ley in a cavalcade of 176
light and heavy vehi-
cles, the officials said.
The Jammu and
Kashmir administra-
tion is also augmenting
the efforts of the shrine
board by providing fool-
proof security cover
along both the Pahal-
gam and Baltal routes
to the holy cave, a sen-
ior official said.
The board has also
made a provision of on-
line ‘darshan’ for those
who cannot physically
undertake the pilgrim-
age.
“For the devotees
who cannot come for
the pilgrimage, they
can avail the facility of
online ‘darshan’,
‘pooja’, ‘havan’ and
‘prasad’,” the official
said.
This year, the pil-
grimage is expected to
see higher than usual
attendance of pilgrims
as the Yatra is resuming
after a gap of three
years.
In 2019, the Yatra was
curtailed days ahead
the abrogation of Arti-
cle 370. The pilgrimage
did not take place in
2020 and 2021 due to the
COVID-19 pandemic.
While a senior army
officer recently said the
threat perception to the
pilgrimage was more
this year, unprecedent-
ed security arrange-
ments have been made
to ensure it remains
incident-free.
Security personnel
have been deployed
three to four times more
in strength for the pil-
grimage, the officials
said.
The security along
both the Baltal and Pa-
halgam routes has been
beefed up and new secu-
rity pickets have been
established to ensure
that subversive ele-
ments are not able to
disrupt the pilgrimage,
they said.
To ensure only bona
fide pilgrims are pre-
sent at the pilgrimage,
the SASB has asked all
intending pilgrims to
carry Aadhaar cards or
any other biometric
verified document with
them. The pilgrimage
will culminate on Au-
gust 11, coinciding with
‘Raksha Bandhan’.

Lokpal gets
5,680
corruption
complaints
New Delhi (PTI): Anti-
corruption ombudsman
Lokpal received 5,680
complaints during 2021-
22, of which over 5,100
were yet to be regis-
tered, according to an
RTI reply
.
Of the total com-
plaints received in the
last fiscal, 169 were for-
mat and 5,511 were un-
der non-format catego-
ry, it said.
The government had
in March 2020 issued a
format for filing cor-
ruption complaints
against public servants
with the Lokpal.
As many as 61 non-
format complaints were
pending with various
agencies and 5,101
“complaints (were) yet
to be registered” for
2021-22, the Lokpal said
in a reply to an RTI que-
ry. It had got a total of
2,355 complaints - 131
format and 2,224 in non-
format - during 2020-21.
Of these, 1,579 were dis-
posed of, the reply said.
In 2019-20, the Lokpal
had got 1,427 com-
plaints, all of which
were disposed of, said
the latest reply from the
anti-graft ombudsman.

well as the DDA, Mu-
nicipal Corporation of
Delhi, and Delhi Police.
The court also issued
notice to the PWD, Del-
hi Jal Board, Delhi Can-

directed that the matter
be listed for considera-
tion before the Chief
Justice of the high
court on July 4.
