As reported by First

Yogi Adityanath had em-

Mumbai: While Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi has kept his cards
close to his chest on the
BJP’s choice for the In-
dian Presidency, Vice-
President Venkaiah
Naidu and the gover-
nors of Uttar Pradesh,
Kerala and Puducher-
ry—Anandiben Patel,
Arif Mohammad Khan
and Tamilisai Sounda-
rarajan, respectively-
-are believed to be in the
fray
.
Modi is also believed
to be considering Muk-
tar Abbas Naqvi as a
nominee for Vice-Presi-
dent of India, as part of
a Muslim outreach
strategy in the wake of
the recent controversy
and protests across In-
dia. “Modi is known to
pull out a surprise and
it is difficult to outguess
him. However, it is clear
that he will prefer a
hardcore party person
with a polite personali-
ty, probably a woman,
like Anandiben Patel as
India’s next head of
state who can add value
to the post. The clean
image and intelligence
quotient of the nomi-
nee and a caste analysis
along with a sheer dedi-
cation to the BJP ideol-
ogy will be the qualify-
ing aspects of the nomi-
nee,” a senior BJP
leader told First India.
Meanwhile, the meet-
ing of parties opposed
to the BJP, organized by
Mamata Bannerjee, de-
liberated mostly over
the candidature of Na-
tionalist Congress Par-
ty (NCP) chief Sharad
Pawar, even as West
Bengal’s CM quietly
sounded out Mahatma
Gandhi’s grandson Go-
pal Krishna Gandhi as
a possible Opposition
consensus nominee.
“Gandhi was the op-
position’s choice as In-
dia’s Vice-President,
even though Venkaiah
Naidu won. He has said
that he will consider the
offer to be named the
consensus opposition
candidate for the Indian
Presidency,” a senior

firmed. Turn to P2

post her re-
turn from
Rio Para-
lympics in 2016. She re-
calls how in her career
of 10 years and years of
winning medals, it was
the very first time when
the Prime Minister of
India had invited her to
be part of a Meet and
Greet ceremony
. PM
Modi called her by her
name and said “Deepa,
in all your lectures,
speeches and interac-
tion with other players,
it is your positivity that
comes to the fore. I my-
self watch your videos
many a time and I feel
positive.” I believe noth-
ing can make for a more
memorable
moment
than when the Prime
Minister himself ac-
knowledges your inner
strength and courage,
says Deepa.
It was after Tokyo
2020 Paralympics
when all the ath-
letes met Prime
Minister Modi af-
ter returning
home with 19
medals. I had
participated not
just as a sport-
sperson but as a
team leader too in
those Paralym-
pics. Modiji supported,
blessed and encouraged
all the athletes before
they left for the event.
The medals, which we
won through Modiji’s
support and our hard
work were instrumen-
tal in changing the way
people perceive disabil-
ities. PM Modi’s en-
couragement
paved the
way for Paralympics
to
be treated like main-
stream sports in India.
He met all of us with
great love, affection and
appreciated our efforts.
He took time out for us
generously
from his
tight schedule- a PM’s
time is always invalua-
ble - and those golden
moments will remain
itched forever in the
hearts and minds of
our young athletes. The
best part about this was
that PM Modi had de-
tailed information
of
each and every player.
He just wasn’t aware of
the personal lives of the
athletes but he also fol-
lowed them religiously
throughout their Tokyo
tour so much so that he
knew what exactly the
players were doing at
what time, what their
likes and dislikes are,
much like a family
member would do. This
differentiate
s PM Modi
from all other leaders
India has ever seen- his
keen interest in people,
their problems and as-
pirations and a burning
desire to help everyone
reach their goals. Such
encourageme
nt coming
from the PM completely
changes the psyche of
the athletes and they
are filled with the
fervour of patriot-
ism, the desire to
bring home a
medal!
It is obvi-
ousthatwhen
the PM him-
self is interact-
ing with play-
ers, there is this
inevitable focus
on governance.
The players share
n u m e r o u s
thoughts with him and
they include feedback
the facilities, a look into
their problems, the pro-
cess of preparing for
tournaments
, and when
our PM takes cogni-
zance of such issues, it
does not only encourage
the players but it helps
in bringing the country
together and transform-
ing the mindset towards
the disabled.
I thank our PM for
mentioningmyachieve-
ments in his Sept 25,
2016 Mann Ki Baat
when he said that he
will never forget my
words I spoke after
I won the silver
medal in Rio.
I had said
“ w i t h
this medal I have de-
feated my handicap”. I
believe Modiji found it
energizing and I thank
him for recognizing me
for all my efforts.
I clearly recall one
very special moment
with PM Modi when I
experienced
how much
he cares about his coun-
trymen. It was a recep-
tion on August 15 at
Rashtrapati
Bhawan
and I had the honour to
be a part of it too. When
PM Modi came towards
us, he began by interact-
ing one by one with all
the athletes. We already
know how well-versed
he is at all times with
the personal and profes-
sional details of each
and every player. At the
same time, his aura is so
magnetic, that people
tend to flock to him nat-
urally
.Asheapproached
me, suddenly a lot of
people came towards us
to greet him. In their ex-
citement, they some-
how overlooked the fact
that I was sitting there,
at the centre of the com-
motion. And all of them
starting reaching out to
the PM over me which
was a cause of discom-
fort for me.
But then the most un-
expected happened. PM
Modi himself, with both
hishands,createdakind
of barrier around me as
if trying to shield me in
that commotion.
And
then, being the beloved
brother of every woman
in the country
, he placed
hishandonmybackand
told everyone to be cau-
tious. He said “Deepa
has undergone several
surgeries and her back
has innumerable
stitch-
es. Please do not lean
over her. She will get
hurt.” At that moment,
tears swelled in my eyes
when I heard the PM say
these words so full of
empathy, compassion
and concern. I felt it was
totallyremarkablethata
he should even remem-
ber that Deepa is strug-
gling with a spinal cord
injury and that the
Prime Minister should
try and protect her from
bodily harm.
I was touched and
overwhelmed
by this ex-
pression of concern for
me by PM Modi. I have
had the privilege of
meeting and interacting
with PM Modi on nu-
merous occasions over a
decade. In fact there was
one instance when he
himself wheeled my
wheelchair to the stage
during a programme!
I
got a call from PMO one
day that said “Deepaji
you need to reach
Ahmedabad
for an
event.” It was at a very
shortnoticebutformeit
was a matter of great
pride and honour as I
was being invited at the
inauguration
of Trans-
Stadia, which is one of
the most advanced inte-
grated multi-purpos
e
stadiums in the country
.
Some of the finest ath-
letesof thecountrywere
invited to this event but
PM Modi came up to all
of us and said “This line
up of great achievers
wouldneverbecomplete
without a woman, and
without a disabled.”
And then he wheeled me
onto the stage prior to
his address. What made
theeveningmorememo-
rable was that during
histhreeminutespeech,
PM Modi again ad-
dressed the youth of the
country and said that if
someonereallyneedsin-
spiration to be able to
overcomethechallenges
of life, he or she must
definitely read Deepa’s
biography once. She is a
living example of grit
and resilience.
That day to this mo-
ment, it has been my
endeavour to live up to
the faith, concern and
respect PM Modi har-
bours for me. I would
never want that trust to
break and at the same
time I want to continue
to contribute in the
making of my New In-
dia that cares for its
women and its disabled.

said that he does not
regret his statement
and that his party will

Speaking to report-

have not said anything

ered the speech based
on the party line. The
last sentence that I said,
I used an idiom. There
are so many things that
are said as idioms, I just

He also said there was

the Congress leader.

First India Bureau
Mumbai: While it was
the Shiv Sena that
first decided to keep
its MLAs at a five-star
and a resort for the
Rajya Sabha elec-
tions, it is the BJP
that has already sent
messages to its MLAs
to group together at
Hotel Taj President in
Colaba from June 18
for the legislative
council elections.
The party has as-
signed senior leaders
Ashish Shelar, Girish
Mahajan and Pravin
Darekar to manage the
logistics for the legisla-
tive council polls. BJP’s
106 MLAs have been
told to report to Taj
President hotel in Co-
laba on June 18 and stay
on until voting on June
20. Party sources said,
like for the RS polls, the
BJP will train its MLAs
in the voting process
during their two-day
stay at the hotel to en-
sure that there are no
mistakes while casting
the vote.
A keen contest is ex-
pected between the rul-
ing Shiv Sena-led com-
bine and the BJP on
June 20 as, unlike in
the Rajya Sabha elec-
tions, voting is by se-
cret ballot, and any
cross-voting will be dif-
ficult to detect. In the
June 10 Rajya Sabha
elections, the party
MLAs had to show
their ballot paper to the
polling agent of the
party, while independ-
ent MLAs did not have
to display their votes.
It may be recalled
that the BJP managed
to win the support of
nine legislators who
had been backing the
Maha Vikas Aghadi for
its third Rajya Sabha
candidate, Dhananjay
Mahadik. Mahadik se-
cured high first prefer-
ence votes, and when
the second preference
votes of BJP candi-
dates Piyush Goyal and
Dr Anil Bonde were
transferred to him, he
easily managed to
reach the magic figure
of 41 votes. Shiv Sena’s
second candidate San-
jay Pawar had to face
an embarrassing de-
feat.
There are 11 candi-
dates in the fray for 10
legislative council
seats. With the BJP con-
fident of securing vic-
tory for four of its can-
didates, it is the fifth
candidate Prasad Lad
for whom the party will
require additional votes
from the ruling party
camp. For the legisla-
tive council polls, the
quota is 27 votes.

was invoked against
the Ranas.
On May 05, special

The police, on May
09, approached the
special court seeking
that the bail of
Navneet, the inde-
pendent MP from
Amravati, and Ravi
Rana, independent
MLA from the same
district, be cancelled
as they had allegedly
violated the bail con-
ditions.
The couple then
filed a joint reply to
the police’s plea and
said they had neither

said the police had
failed to give a “co-

Jalna: Hitting out at
the Maha Vikas

the Shiv Sena-led

Speaking at the

“Chief Minister

The government has

The MVA govern-

development of the

especially Jalna dis-

adding that the erst-

the Marathwada Wa-

which could solve the
problems of drinking
water and irrigation.
“But the MVA dis-

the project. Had this
scheme been imple-

would have been re-

Mumbai: The pan-
demic, the ensuing
lockdown and the so-
cioeconomic impact
of the last two years
has not only deeply
affected the education
of children, but also
triggered a sharper
rise in the number of
working children in
rural Maharashtra, a
study by NGO Child
Rights and You (CRY)
and its partner organ-
izations showed.
CRY has been work-
ing in six rural districts
on education and pro-
tection for a number of
years. The number of
children who are in
child labour or working
in agriculture has risen
from 2,556 in 2020 to
3,356 in 2021 and 3,309 in
2022 within CRY inter-
vention areas.
While Latur and
Wardha saw a compara-
tive drop in working
children in 2022, dis-
tricts like Jalna, and
Parbhani and tribal-
dominated Nandurbar
saw a sharp increase.
The children were
found working largely
in the agriculture sec-
tor. In Jalna, 635 of 803
working children in
Jalna district were in-
volved in agriculture.
In Parbhani, this
number was 736 of 751,
and in Nandurbar, how-
ever, 360 out of 752, were
employed in agricul-
ture while 446 worked
with private or family
enterprises.
“The closure of
schools, lack of access
to the Internet and mo-
bile phones for online
classes, financial stress
of the families with
huge job losses as well
as the long strike of
state-run bus services
have affected children’s
academic prospects’ in
rural areas, thereby
forcing them to work,”
Kreeanne Rabadi, Di-
rector, CRY (West) said.
Rural children have
also migrated to neigh-
bouring cities for work
as waiters, helpers in
brick kilns, labourers,
and beggars in cities
like Mumbai, Pune,
Daund, Beed, Mand-
mad, Aurangabad and
Nashik.
In Mumbai, it has
been observed that out
of 589 children in the
age group of 14-18 years,
145 children are
currently involved in
different kinds of jobs.
Of these, 84 girls are
engaged in household
chores.

Gondia: The chairman of a cooperative rice mill has
been arrested for alleged embezzlement of funds in
Gondia district, police said on Wednesday. Follow-
ing an auditor’s complaint about irregularities in
rice procurement between 2018 to 2020 at Nehru
Cooperative Rice Mill, Goregaon, police registered
a FIR against 24 people including chairman Rekhlal
Tembre. He was arrested on June 13 and a local
court sent him in police custody till June 20, said
inspector Sachin Mhetre.
Thane: Eight persons, most of them college stu-
dents, were arrested in Thane district on Wednesday
for allegedly abetting the suicide of an 18-year-old
girl, said police. All the accused were booked under
IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide). The accused,
including a woman, were allegedly trying to black-
mail the girl using some videos. The girl ended her
life two days ago by jumping from the third floor
of the building in Dombivli where she lived. In her
suicide note, she blamed the accused for forcing her
to take the extreme step, said a police official.
Mumbai: Three persons, including a minor, drowned
while swimming in the sea near the Juhu beach in
Mumbai, said a civic official on Wednesday. The
three ventured into the waters behind JW Marriott
Hotel in suburban Santacruz on Tuesday afternoon
and later went missing, he said. Rescue teams of the
fire brigade and Navy divers subsequently started
a search operation, but stopped it around 8 pm. On
Wednesday morning, rescuers initially fished out the
bodies of Kaustubh Ganesh Gupta (18) and Paresh
Ganesh Gupta (16). After some time, they also traced
the body of Aman Gupta (21).
CRUCIAL READ
Thane: A police constable allegedly strangled a
51-year-old nurse, he was in a relationship with, to
death in Thane district on Wednesday. Police officials
arrested the accused with his relative for trying to dis-
pose of the body. The investigation revealed that the
prime accused, Sachin Khajekar (39), was fed up with
the woman’s demands for money. “He strangled her
in his car in Ulhasnagar camp No 3 on the intervening
night of Tuesday and Wednesday. He attempted to
dispose of the body with the help of his brother-in-law
Kalpesh alias Keshav Khairnar when they were inter-
cepted by a police team,” an investigating officer said.

The closure of schools, lack of access to the Internet and mobile
phones for online classes, financial stress of the families with
huge job losses as well as the long strike of state-run bus ser-

areas, thereby forcing them to work…. More investment is needed in
programmes to get children out of the workforce and back into schools.

talks about
her meet-
ing with
PM Modi
post her re-
turn from
Rio Para-
lympics in 2016. She re-
calls how in her career
of 10 years and years of
winning medals, it was
the very first time when
the Prime Minister of
India had invited her to
be part of a Meet and
Greet ceremony
. PM
Modi called her by her
name and said “Deepa,
in all your lectures,
speeches and interac-
tion with other players,
it is your positivity that
comes to the fore. I my-
self watch your videos
many a time and I feel
positive.” I believe noth-
ing can make for a more
memorable moment
than when the Prime
Minister himself ac-
knowledges your inner
strength and courage,
says Deepa.
It was after Tokyo
2020 Paralympics
when all the ath-
letes met Prime
Minister Modi af-
ter returning
home with 19
medals. I had
participated not
just as a sport-
sperson but as a
team leader too in
those Paralym-
pics. Modiji supported,
blessed and encouraged
all the athletes before
they left for the event.
The medals, which we
won through Modiji’s
support and our hard
work were instrumen-
tal in changing the way
people perceive disabil-
ities. PM Modi’s en-
couragement paved the
way for Paralympics to
be treated like main-
stream sports in India.
He met all of us with
great love, affection and
appreciated our efforts.
He took time out for us
generously from his
tight schedule- a PM’s
time is always invalua-
ble - and those golden
moments will remain
itched forever in the
hearts and minds of
our young athletes. The
best part about this was
that PM Modi had de-
tailed information of
each and every player.
He just wasn’t aware of
the personal lives of the
athletes but he also fol-
lowed them religiously
throughout their Tokyo
tour so much so that he
knew what exactly the
players were doing at
what time, what their
likes and dislikes are,
much like a family
member would do. This
differentiates PM Modi
from all other leaders
India has ever seen- his
keen interest in people,
their problems and as-
pirations and a burning
desire to help everyone
reach their goals. Such
encouragement coming
from the PM completely
changes the psyche of
the athletes and they
are filled with the
fervour of patriot-
ism, the desire to
bring home a
medal!
It is obvi-
ousthatwhen
the PM him-
self is interact-
ing with play-
ers, there is this
inevitable focus
on governance.
The players share
n u m e r o u s
thoughts with him and
they include feedback
the facilities, a look into
their problems, the pro-
cess of preparing for
tournaments, and when
our PM takes cogni-
zance of such issues, it
does not only encourage
the players but it helps
in bringing the country
together and transform-
ing the mindset towards
the disabled.
I thank our PM for
mentioningmyachieve-
ments in his Sept 25,
2016 Mann Ki Baat
when he said that he
will never forget my
words I spoke after
I won the silver
medal in Rio.
I had said
“ w i t h
this medal I have de-
feated my handicap”. I
believe Modiji found it
energizing and I thank
him for recognizing me
for all my efforts.
I clearly recall one
very special moment
with PM Modi when I
experienced how much
he cares about his coun-
trymen. It was a recep-
tion on August 15 at
Rashtrapati Bhawan
and I had the honour to
be a part of it too. When
PM Modi came towards
us, he began by interact-
ing one by one with all
the athletes. We already
know how well-versed
he is at all times with
the personal and profes-
sional details of each
and every player. At the
same time, his aura is so
magnetic, that people
tend to flock to him nat-
urally
.Asheapproached
me, suddenly a lot of
people came towards us
to greet him. In their ex-
citement, they some-
how overlooked the fact
that I was sitting there,
at the centre of the com-
motion. And all of them
starting reaching out to
the PM over me which
was a cause of discom-
fort for me.
But then the most un-
expected happened. PM
Modi himself, with both
hishands,createdakind
of barrier around me as
if trying to shield me in
that commotion. And
then, being the beloved
brother of every woman
in the country
, he placed
hishandonmybackand
told everyone to be cau-
tious. He said “Deepa
has undergone several
surgeries and her back
has innumerable stitch-
es. Please do not lean
over her. She will get
hurt.” At that moment,
tears swelled in my eyes
when I heard the PM say
these words so full of
empathy, compassion
and concern. I felt it was
totallyremarkablethata
he should even remem-
ber that Deepa is strug-
gling with a spinal cord
injury and that the
Prime Minister should
try and protect her from
bodily harm.
I was touched and
overwhelmed by this ex-
pression of concern for
me by PM Modi. I have
had the privilege of
meeting and interacting
with PM Modi on nu-
merous occasions over a
decade. In fact there was
one instance when he
himself wheeled my
wheelchair to the stage
during a programme! I
got a call from PMO one
day that said “Deepaji
you need to reach
Ahmedabad for an
event.” It was at a very
shortnoticebutformeit
was a matter of great
pride and honour as I
was being invited at the
inauguration of Trans-
Stadia, which is one of
the most advanced inte-
grated multi-purpose
stadiums in the country
.
Some of the finest ath-
letesof thecountrywere
invited to this event but
PM Modi came up to all
of us and said “This line
up of great achievers
wouldneverbecomplete
without a woman, and
without a disabled.”
And then he wheeled me
onto the stage prior to
his address. What made
theeveningmorememo-
rable was that during
histhreeminutespeech,
PM Modi again ad-
dressed the youth of the
country and said that if
someonereallyneedsin-
spiration to be able to
overcomethechallenges
of life, he or she must
definitely read Deepa’s
biography once. She is a
living example of grit
and resilience.
That day to this mo-
ment, it has been my
endeavour to live up to
the faith, concern and
respect PM Modi har-
bours for me. I would
never want that trust to
break and at the same
time I want to continue
to contribute in the
making of my New In-
dia that cares for its
women and its disabled.

‘PM WHEELED ME ONTO THE
STAGE PRIOR TO HIS ADDRESS’
Some of the finest athletes of the country were
invited by PM Modi in Ahmedabad, he came
up to all of us and said “This line up of great
achievers would never be complete without a
woman, and without a disabled.” And then he
wheeled me onto the stage prior to his address.
What made the evening more memorable was
that during his speech, PM again addressed
youth said that if someone really needs inspi-
ration to be able to overcome challenges of life,
he or she must definitely read Deepa’s biography.

ENCOURAGEMENT PAVED
WAY FOR PARALYMPICS
Modiji supported, blessed and
encouraged all the athletes
before they left for the event. The
medals, which we won through
Modiji’s support and our hard work
were instrumental in changing the
way people perceive disabilities. PM
Modi’s encouragement paved the
way for Paralympics to be treated like
mainstream sports in India.

Mohan Bhagwat ad-
dressed the Sant Sam-
melan after offering
prayers on the occasion
of 65th foundation day
of Shri Krishna Tem-
ple in Khatauli town in
Muzaffarnagar on
Wednesday.
During this, he took
a pledge to take the na-
tion towards progress.
He said that everyone
will have to cooperate
to make the country a
Vishwa Guru. He said
that only a pure man
can go beyond the intel-
lect. Truth is harsh. Do
not think for others
that the one who is suf-
fering, is sad, let it die,
if you are born, he will
die sometime. If this is
done, then the behavior
of man will not remain
like that of man. There-
fore the fourth impor-
tant element is compas-
sion. When unright-
eous people attack,
they have to be fought
vigorously.
He said that we
should move forward to
behave with each other
faithfully and respect-
fully and to carry whole
of humanity with us.

THE COMMENT CAME HOURS AHEAD OF THE OPPOSITION’S BIG MEETING IN THE
NATIONAL CAPITAL CALLED BY WEST BENGAL CHIEF MINISTER MAMATA BANERJEE
New Delhi(ANI): Con-

Wednesday that De-

Prime Minister Naren-

The comment came
hours ahead of the Op-

in the national capital
called by Trinamool
Congress chief and
West Bengal Chief Min-

Mr Kharge also asked
if the government will
accept if the Opposi-

“unanimous, non-con-
troversial” candidate’s
name.”I spoke to Ra-

that the PM wants to

cy. Ms Banerjee had in-
vited chiefs of 22 politi-

united fight against the
BJP and its allies in the
election for a new Pres-

began, several parties
made it clear that they
will stay away. While
some chose to skip the
meeting in their at-
tempt to be equidistant
from the Congress and
the BJP, others cited the
presence of the Con-
gress for their decision.

Presidential contest to define Cong’s political relevance!
Sharat K Verma
New Delhi: Even be-
fore giving somewhat of
a contest to the BJP in
presidential election,
the Congress party will
have to contest with
other political parties to
make itself heard. This
is so because the opposi-
tion parties are prepar-
ing to contest the elec-
tions by forming a non-
BJP and non-Congress
front. Even if a Third or
Federal Front is not
formed, opposition par-
ties are still trying to
field a common candi-
date and force the Con-
gress to support this op-
position alliance. On
the other hand Con-
gress is not ready to sup-
port the leader of other
party other than its own
party in any condition.
The Congress wants
that a presidential can-
didate fielded by it
should be supported
‘automatically’ by the
rest of the parties as
has been the case in the
past. That is why the
Congress has engaged
Mallikarjun Kharge in
this campaign.
On the other hand the
leaders of Mamata Ba-
nerjee,Chandrashekhar
Rao and Arvind Kejri-
wal’s parties are en-
gaged in different ef-
forts. Until a few days
ago, the Samajwadi Par-
ty National President
AkhileshYadavwasalso
taking initiative in this
matter. But he has been
embroiled in the by-elec-
tions to two Lok Sabha
seats in his state - Azam-
garh and Rampur. Both
the seats are of impor-
tantforhimasbothhave
been his party’s seats
and vacated by resigna-
tion. However, Mamata
Banerjee has called a
meeting of opposition
parties on Wednesday
.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi
Party MP Sanjay Singh
has gone to Mumbai to
meet Sharad Pawar. K
Chandrashekhar Rao
has already met Stalin,
Hemant Soren, Mamta
Banerjee, Arvind Kejri-
wal etc. So, the Congress
has yet to fight the battle
of deciding the candi-
datebeforetherealfight.
Meanwhile, Sonia Gan-
dhi’s health has deterio-
rated and Rahul Gandhi
is embroiled in ED’s in-
terrogation and in such
situation,Congressfinds
itself embroiled in a po-
litical ‘turf war’, the re-
sult of which will decide

Why Mallikarjun

New Delhi: The World

The auction of over
72 GHz of the spectrum

Sources said that the
Cabinet has approved
5G auctions at reserve
prices recommended
by the sector regulator
TRAI.
TRAI had earlier rec-

39% reduction in the
reserve or floor price
for the sale of 5G spec-
trum for mobile ser-

other key dates to
watch-out for is the
pre-bid conference
scheduled for June 20,
2022, submission of ap-
plications with a dead-
line of July 8, and pre-
qualification of bid-
ders on July 18. Mock
auctions will be held
on July 22 and 23, 2022.
A total of 72097.85
MHz of spectrum with
a validity period of 20

Expect telcos to buy spectrum
worth `1-1.1 lakh crore: Icra
New Delhi (PTI): The telecom industry is expected
to shell out around `1-1.1 lakh crore on the 5G
auction, despite telcos’ reservations over high
spectrum prices, Icra said but cautioned that sector
debt level is likely to rise with upcoming auctions.
Given the relaxed payment terms for the auction,
the upfront outgo is likely to be around `10,000
crore for the industry. “While telecom operators
consider reserve prices to be very high, nonethe-
less Icra expects telcos to buy spectrum worth
around Rs 1-1.1 lakh crore in these auctions, which
will be primarily towards developing 5G capabilities
but also plugging other gaps,” it said.
New Delhi (PTI): The spectrum

Routine tests like CBC, electrolyte panel available
in-house are deliberately outsourced to private labs
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: The state-
run Sir JJ Group of
Hospitals (JJ Hospi-
tal) has instituted
an inquiry commit-
tee to unearth the
nexus between hos-
pital administrators
found to be out-
sourcing routine
medical tests for
complete blood
count (CBC) and
electrolyte panel
(aka serum electro-
lyte test) that are
available in-house.
Confirming this, the
Dean of JJ Hospital,
Dr Pallavi Saple told
First India, “I had
restarted the in-house
testing facilities (on
April 01) upon assum-
ing charge in the
hospital. However, we
found that patients
were still being re-
ferred to external
agencies for these
routine tests that
are available 24/7
within the hospital
facility itself. This
has had the desired
effect and we will
audit the situation in a
month’s time.”
The south-Mumbai
facility sees a daily av-
erage of more than 300
outpatients as well as
close to 2,000 patients
admitted to the insti-
tution for medical
treatment at any given
time. While the need
for the inquiry may
stem from the fact that
multiple pathological
test centres have
mushroomed in Mum-
bai, particularly dur-
ing the pandemic,
when government-op-
erated medical facili-
ties were besieged by
COVID-19 patients.
The continuation of
the outsourcing even
now is most likely ow-
ing to commercial re-
lationships created
with private patholog-
ical laboratories seek-
ing a ready flow of
clients and willing to
pay a quick buck un-
der the table.
Alongside the in-
quiry committee, the
existing infrastruc-
ture at the hospital is
also being leveraged to
create a database to
benchmark the effi-
ciency of medical care
provided to patients
visiting the medical
centre, which is seek-
ing to transform itself
to make it on par with
the All India Institute
of Medical Sciences.
I had restarted the in-house testing facilities (on April 01)

that patients were still being referred to external agencies

  • 1. Renni Abraham Mumbai: Maharashtra Tourism and Environ- ment Minister Aaditya Thackeray visited the Ayodhyatempletownfor a comprehensive Dar- shan-seekingpilgrimage on Wednesday sans poli- tics or disruptions creat- edbypoliticaldetractors, with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paving thewayfortheShivSena leader’s devotion for Ram Lalla. As reported by First India, even amid the row over MNS leader Raj Thackeray’s previously proposed visit to Ayod- hya on June 05, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had em- phatically stated that all devotees would be wel- comed and no obstacles would be permitted un- der his government. Al- though Raj Thackeray laterdeferredhisvisiton account of hip surgery , his nephew and Maha- rashtra minister Aditya Thackeray’s visit has succeeded in blowing up anydoubtscreatedabout future visits to the tem- pletownbyMaharashtri- ans. The younger Thack- eray told the media that hisfatherandMaharash- tra Chief Minister Ud- dhav Thackeray would write to his counterpart in UP seeking the alloca- tion of 100 acres of land for the construction of a Maharashtra Sadan whereLordRama’sdevo- tees from the state could be accommodated dur- ing future pilgrimages. “The Shiv Sena’s god Balasaheb Thackeray was the first to demand the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. In2018,UddavjiandIvis- ited the temple town and hereiteratedBalasaheb’s vision and stated that first the Ram temple should be constructed before talks of govern- ment formation. Coinci- dentally , the apex court of India paved the way fortheRamtempleinNo- vember 2019, after which the (MVA) government was also installed (as Balasaheb and Uddhav had envisioned).” Heemphasizedthathe wasonapurelyreligious visit to Ayodhya and was alsoinvitedbytheIskcon facility there. “I visited the Iskcon facility and was asked by the Krish- na devotees there to rep- licate the Iskcon facility created in Mumbai city in Ayodhya as well. Modi is also believed to be considering Muk- tar Abbas Naqvi as a nominee for Vice-Presi- dent of India, as part of a Muslim outreach strategy in the wake of the recent controversy and protests across In- dia. “Modi is known to pull out a surprise and it is difficult to outguess him. However, it is clear that he will prefer a hardcore party person with a polite personali- ty, probably a woman, like Anandiben Patel as India’s next head of state who can add value to the post. The clean image and intelligence quotient of the nomi- nee and a caste analysis along with a sheer dedi- cation to the BJP ideol- ogy will be the qualify- ing aspects of the nomi- nee,” a senior BJP leader told First India. Meanwhile, the meet- ing of parties opposed to the BJP, organized by Mamata Bannerjee, de- liberated mostly over the candidature of Na- tionalist Congress Par- ty (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, even as West Bengal’s CM quietly sounded out Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Go- pal Krishna Gandhi as a possible Opposition consensus nominee. “Gandhi was the op- position’s choice as In- dia’s Vice-President, even though Venkaiah Naidu won. He has said that he will consider the offer to be named the consensus opposition candidate for the Indian Presidency,” a senior political leader con- firmed. Anandiben Patel eepa Malik talks about her meet- ing with PM Modi post her re- turn from Rio Para- lympics in 2016. She re- calls how in her career of 10 years and years of winning medals, it was the very first time when the Prime Minister of India had invited her to be part of a Meet and Greet ceremony . PM Modi called her by her name and said “Deepa, in all your lectures, speeches and interac- tion with other players, it is your positivity that comes to the fore. I my- self watch your videos many a time and I feel positive.” I believe noth- ing can make for a more memorable moment than when the Prime Minister himself ac- knowledges your inner strength and courage, says Deepa. It was after Tokyo 2020 Paralympics when all the ath- letes met Prime Minister Modi af- ter returning home with 19 medals. I had participated not just as a sport- sperson but as a team leader too in those Paralym- pics. Modiji supported, blessed and encouraged all the athletes before they left for the event. The medals, which we won through Modiji’s support and our hard work were instrumen- tal in changing the way people perceive disabil- ities. PM Modi’s en- couragement paved the way for Paralympics to be treated like main- stream sports in India. He met all of us with great love, affection and appreciated our efforts. He took time out for us generously from his tight schedule- a PM’s time is always invalua- ble - and those golden moments will remain itched forever in the hearts and minds of our young athletes. The best part about this was that PM Modi had de- tailed information of each and every player. He just wasn’t aware of the personal lives of the athletes but he also fol- lowed them religiously throughout their Tokyo tour so much so that he knew what exactly the players were doing at what time, what their likes and dislikes are, much like a family member would do. This differentiate s PM Modi from all other leaders India has ever seen- his keen interest in people, their problems and as- pirations and a burning desire to help everyone reach their goals. Such encourageme nt coming from the PM completely changes the psyche of the athletes and they are filled with the fervour of patriot- ism, the desire to bring home a medal! It is obvi- ousthatwhen the PM him- self is interact- ing with play- ers, there is this inevitable focus on governance. The players share n u m e r o u s thoughts with him and they include feedback the facilities, a look into their problems, the pro- cess of preparing for tournaments , and when our PM takes cogni- zance of such issues, it does not only encourage the players but it helps in bringing the country together and transform- ing the mindset towards the disabled. I thank our PM for mentioningmyachieve- ments in his Sept 25, 2016 Mann Ki Baat when he said that he will never forget my words I spoke after I won the silver medal in Rio. I had said “ w i t h this medal I have de- feated my handicap”. I believe Modiji found it energizing and I thank him for recognizing me for all my efforts. I clearly recall one very special moment with PM Modi when I experienced how much he cares about his coun- trymen. It was a recep- tion on August 15 at Rashtrapati Bhawan and I had the honour to be a part of it too. When PM Modi came towards us, he began by interact- ing one by one with all the athletes. We already know how well-versed he is at all times with the personal and profes- sional details of each and every player. At the same time, his aura is so magnetic, that people tend to flock to him nat- urally .Asheapproached me, suddenly a lot of people came towards us to greet him. In their ex- citement, they some- how overlooked the fact that I was sitting there, at the centre of the com- motion. And all of them starting reaching out to the PM over me which was a cause of discom- fort for me. But then the most un- expected happened. PM Modi himself, with both hishands, createdakind of barrier around me as if trying to shield me in that commotion. And then, being the beloved brother of every woman in the country , he placed hishandonmybackand told everyone to be cau- tious. He said “Deepa has undergone several surgeries and her back has innumerable stitch- es. Please do not lean over her. She will get hurt.” At that moment, tears swelled in my eyes when I heard the PM say these words so full of empathy, compassion and concern. I felt it was totallyremarkablethata he should even remem- ber that Deepa is strug- gling with a spinal cord injury and that the Prime Minister should try and protect her from bodily harm. I was touched and overwhelmed by this ex- pression of concern for me by PM Modi. I have had the privilege of meeting and interacting with PM Modi on nu- merous occasions over a decade. In fact there was one instance when he himself wheeled my wheelchair to the stage during a programme! I got a call from PMO one day that said “Deepaji you need to reach Ahmedabad for an event.” It was at a very shortnoticebutformeit was a matter of great pride and honour as I was being invited at the inauguration of Trans- Stadia, which is one of the most advanced inte- grated multi-purpos e stadiums in the country . Some of the finest ath- letesof thecountrywere invited to this event but PM Modi came up to all of us and said “This line up of great achievers wouldneverbecomplete without a woman, and without a disabled.” And then he wheeled me onto the stage prior to his address. What made theeveningmorememo- rable was that during histhreeminutespeech, PM Modi again ad- dressed the youth of the country and said that if someonereallyneedsin- spiration to be able to overcomethechallenges of life, he or she must definitely read Deepa’s biography once. She is a living example of grit and resilience. That day to this mo- ment, it has been my endeavour to live up to the faith, concern and respect PM Modi har- bours for me. I would never want that trust to break and at the same time I want to continue to contribute in the making of my New In- dia that cares for its women and its disabled. Speaking to report- ers, Hussain said, “I have not said anything to compel someone to register an FIR. I deliv- ered the speech based on the party line. The last sentence that I said, I used an idiom. There are so many things that are said as idioms, I just said that.” He also said there was nothing “regrettable” about his remark. “I have said nothing re- grettable. Our leaders arebeingservedED(En- forcement Directorate) notices everyday . Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gan- dhi have been sum- moned. Aren’t there people in the BJP? And the people who switch from BJP to Congress are given ED notices, while the opposite is happening when some- one switches from Con- gress to BJP ,” he said. “If there will be ac- tion, we will see how our party fights against it. The party will fight. I did not speak anything derogatory or make any personal remark,” said the Congress leader. Nagpur police has registered an FIR against Hussain for his alleged objectionable remarks targeting PM Modi during a protest on June 13. First India Bureau Mumbai: While it was the Shiv Sena that first decided to keep its MLAs at a five-star and a resort for the Rajya Sabha elec- tions, it is the BJP that has already sent messages to its MLAs to group together at Hotel Taj President in Colaba from June 18 for the legislative council elections. The party has as- signed senior leaders Ashish Shelar, Girish Mahajan and Pravin Darekar to manage the logistics for the legisla- tive council polls. BJP’s 106 MLAs have been told to report to Taj President hotel in Co- laba on June 18 and stay on until voting on June 20. Party sources said, like for the RS polls, the BJP will train its MLAs in the voting process during their two-day stay at the hotel to en- sure that there are no mistakes while casting the vote. A keen contest is ex- pected between the rul- ing Shiv Sena-led com- bine and the BJP on June 20 as, unlike in the Rajya Sabha elec- tions, voting is by se- cret ballot, and any cross-voting will be dif- ficult to detect. In the June 10 Rajya Sabha elections, the party MLAs had to show their ballot paper to the polling agent of the party, while independ- ent MLAs did not have to display their votes. It may be recalled that the BJP managed to win the support of nine legislators who had been backing the Maha Vikas Aghadi for its third Rajya Sabha candidate, Dhananjay Mahadik. Mahadik se- cured high first prefer- ence votes, and when the second preference votes of BJP candi- dates Piyush Goyal and Dr Anil Bonde were transferred to him, he easily managed to reach the magic figure of 41 votes. Shiv Sena’s second candidate San- jay Pawar had to face an embarrassing de- feat. There are 11 candi- dates in the fray for 10 legislative council seats. With the BJP con- fident of securing vic- tory for four of its can- didates, it is the fifth candidate Prasad Lad for whom the party will require additional votes from the ruling party camp. For the legisla- tive council polls, the quota is 27 votes. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL POLLS BJP asks MLAs to stay at Taj President from June 18 Unlike the Rajya Sabha polls, voting for the MLC is by secret ballot, and cross-voting will be hard to detect WHAT HAPPENED To express their solidarity with Rahul Gandhi against the ED questioning him in connection with a money-laundering probe, Congress lead- ers and workers staged a demonstration outside the ED office in Nagpur on Monday. During his speech, Hussain allegedly used a derogatory remark against PM Modi at the end of his speech. A case was registered on Tuesday at the Gittikhadan police sta- tion in Nagpur under Sections 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 504 of the IPC (inten- tional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace). HANUMAN CHALISA ROW Court adjourns hearing to scrap Rana couple’s bail MP Navneet Rana, her husband MLA Ravi Rana interact with media outside Sessions Court on Wed. —PTI PHOTO Mumbai (PTI): A special court on Wednesday ad- journed the hear- ing of Mumbai’s police’s plea to June 27 seeking cancellation of In- dependent MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana’s bail in connection with the Hanuman Chal- isa protest case. It cited excessive workload as the reason for the de- ferment. The Ranas were arrested by the po- lice in Mumbai on April 23 after they announced that they will recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Chief Minister Ud- dhav Thackeray’s private residence ‘Matoshree’ leading to protests by Sena cadres. Subsequently, the charge of sedition was invoked against the Ranas. On May 05, special Judge RN Rokade granted the Ranas bail with certain con- ditions, preventing them from making any statement related to the case. The judge had also said that the bailwillbeforfeitedif the couple committed similar offences again. The police, on May 09, approached the special court seeking that the bail of Navneet, the inde- pendent MP from Amravati, and Ravi Rana, independent MLA from the same district, be cancelled as they had allegedly violated the bail con- ditions. The couple then filed a joint reply to the police’s plea and said they had neither interfered with the police probe nor had they made any public statements related to the case. They also said the police had failed to give a “co- gent reason” for seeking cancellation of their bail. Speaking at the ‘Jal Akrosh Morcha’, a protest march or- ganized in Jalna by the BJP to highlight the local water prob- lems, Fadnavis also accused the MVA ministers of being busy collecting com- mission and indulg- ing in extortion. “Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray did not step into the Mantralaya (state sec- retariat) for two years, so how can he know the pain and suffer- ings of common peo- ple and farmers? If he is refusing to contest, then a lay person from outside political circles should be chosen as the candidate,” Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai told the multi-party meeting of the Opposi- tion called by All India Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Pawar first tweeted his refusal, and fol- lowed it up with a for- mal statement. With Uddhav and Aaditya Thackeray busy with the latter’s Ayodhya visit, Indus- tries Minister and Ra- jya Sabha member Pri- yanka Chaturvedi was deputed to attend Wednesday’s meeting. Even the general sec- retaries of the Commu- nist Party of India (CPI) D Raja and CPI (M) Sita- ram Yechury skipped the meeting in protest, as Mamata had sched- uled it without consult- ing other opposition parties. CRY has been work- ing in six rural districts on education and pro- tection for a number of years. The number of children who are in child labour or working in agriculture has risen from 2,556 in 2020 to 3,356 in 2021 and 3,309 in 2022 within CRY inter- vention areas. While Latur and Wardha saw a compara- tive drop in working children in 2022, dis- tricts like Jalna, and Parbhani and tribal- dominated Nandurbar saw a sharp increase. The children were found working largely in the agriculture sec- tor. In Jalna, 635 of 803 working children in Jalna district were in- volved in agriculture. In Parbhani, this number was 736 of 751, and in Nandurbar, how- ever, 360 out of 752, were employed in agricul- ture while 446 worked with private or family enterprises. “The closure of schools, lack of access to the Internet and mo- bile phones for online classes, financial stress of the families with huge job losses as well as the long strike of state-run bus services have affected children’s academic prospects’ in rural areas, thereby forcing them to work,” Kreeanne Rabadi, Di- rector, CRY (West) said. Rural children have also migrated to neigh- bouring cities for work as waiters, helpers in brick kilns, labourers, and beggars in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Daund, Beed, Mand- mad, Aurangabad and Nashik. In Mumbai, it has been observed that out of 589 children in the age group of 14-18 years, 145 children are currently involved in different kinds of jobs. Of these, 84 girls are engaged in household chores. lll The semi-finals will be played in Goa while Bhubaneswar in Odisha will host India’s group league matches beginning October 11 Official draw for 16 participating teams, including India, will be held on June 24. —FILE PHOTO FOR WOMEN Promoting women in leadership, the LOC has equipped the Indian footballing ecosystem with 162 female coaches in the grassroots through its legacy initia- tive, the Coach Education Scholarship Programme. PERSPECTIVE MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 2022 04 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/mumbai I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia eepa Malik talks about her meet- ing with PM Modi post her re- turn from Rio Para- lympics in 2016. This differentiates PM Modi from all other leaders India has ever seen- his keen interest in people, their problems and as- pirations and a burning desire to help everyone reach their goals. Such encouragement coming from the PM completely changes the psyche of the athletes and they are filled with the fervour of patriot- ism, the desire to bring home a medal! It is obvi- ousthatwhen the PM him- self is interact- ing with play- ers, there is this inevitable focus on governance. The players share n u m e r o u s thoughts with him and they include feedback the facilities, a look into their problems, the pro- cess of preparing for tournaments, and when our PM takes cogni- zance of such issues, it does not only encourage the players but it helps in bringing the country together and transform- ing the mindset towards the disabled. I got a call from PMO one day that said “Deepaji you need to reach Ahmedabad for an event.” It was at a very shortnoticebutformeit was a matter of great pride and honour as I was being invited at the inauguration of Trans- Stadia, which is one of the most advanced inte- grated multi-purpose stadiums in the country . Sharat K Verma New Delhi: Even be- fore giving somewhat of a contest to the BJP in presidential election, the Congress party will have to contest with other political parties to make itself heard. This is so because the opposi- tion parties are prepar- ing to contest the elec- tions by forming a non- BJP and non-Congress front. Even if a Third or Federal Front is not formed, opposition par- ties are still trying to field a common candi- date and force the Con- gress to support this op- position alliance. On the other hand Con- gress is not ready to sup- port the leader of other party other than its own party in any condition. The Congress wants that a presidential can- didate fielded by it should be supported ‘automatically’ by the rest of the parties as has been the case in the past. That is why the Congress has engaged Mallikarjun Kharge in this campaign. Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh has gone to Mumbai to meet Sharad Pawar. First India Bureau Mumbai: The Bombay High Court (HC) on Wednesday set aside a 2020 decree, which granted ownership of a 6,000-acre parcel of land in suburban Kan- jurmarg to a private firm. It stated that a huge “fraud was played on the court” while obtaining the earlier order. Theordercouldbesig- nificant for the Mumbai Metro project. The Ma- harashtra government, Central government, and Brihanmumbai Mu- nicipal Corporation (BMC) and several other government and private entities have claimed ownershipof thelandor parts of it. The state wants to build a car shed for Mumbai Metro on it. Justice Anil Menon noted on Wednesday that the decree was ob- tained by Adarsh Water Parks and Resorts by suppression of materi- al facts such as there were other claimants. Due to the difficulties faced during virtual court hearings (during the COVID-19 pandemic), the HC was compelled to accept what the lawyers said. The larger responsibility hence falls on the lawyers, said Justice Menon. RISING SEAS! Confirming this, the Dean of JJ Hospital, Dr Pallavi Saple told First India, “I had restarted the in-house testing facilities (on April 01) upon assum- ing charge in the hospital. However, we found that patients were still being re- ferred to external agencies for these routine tests that are available 24/7 within the hospital facility itself. This has had the desired effect and we will audit the situation in a month’s time.” The south-Mumbai facility sees a daily av- erage of more than 300 outpatients as well as close to 2,000 patients admitted to the insti- tution for medical treatment at any given time. While the need for the inquiry may stem from the fact that multiple pathological test centres have mushroomed in Mum- bai, particularly dur- ing the pandemic, when government-op- erated medical facili- ties were besieged by COVID-19 patients. The continuation of the outsourcing even now is most likely ow- ing to commercial re- lationships created with private patholog- ical laboratories seek- ing a ready flow of clients and willing to pay a quick buck un- der the table. Alongside the in- quiry committee, the existing infrastruc- ture at the hospital is also being leveraged to create a database to benchmark the effi- ciency of medical care provided to patients visiting the medical centre, which is seek- ing to transform itself to make it on par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
