Mumbai: As Con-
gress deals with in-
fighting among par-
ty workers, the Bharati-
ya Janata Party (BJP)
has focused its efforts
for the 57 Rajya Sabha
seats at stake in upcom-
ingpolls.Itaimstocome
up with a gameplan to
wrest more seats
than the
possible numbers it
holds sway over.
The BJP began its RS
campaign by focusing
only on political candi-
dates, having shrugged
off the concept of nomi-
nating either philan-
thropists, businessmen,
sportspersons or actors.
This has been followed
up with the appoint-
ment of ‘prabharis’
(state in-charges) for
fiveof thecrucialstates,
making it clear that the
party does not take the
RS polls lightly
.
“TheBJPhadconcen-
trated on social engi-
neering for the 57 Rajya
Sabha seats, elections
forwhichwillbeheldon
June 10. We have nomi-
nated a big chunk of 22
candidates from the
Scheduled Caste (ST)
and Scheduled Tribe
(ST), 9 Other Backward
Classes (OBC) candi-
dates, six women and 20
others from the open
category to include up-
per caste Brahmin,
Thakur and Baniya
classes of society,” a
senior BJP leader told
First India.
According to this
leader, this conscious
move has dissipated the
caste census bogey
raised by political de-
tractors like the Rash-
triya Janata Dal (RJD)
in Bihar.
For Rajasthan, the
party has appointed
Narendra Singh Tomar,
Union Minister for agri-
culture and farmers’
welfare to steward the
RS battle. Similarly, in
Karnataka Union Min-
ister of Tourism G Kis-
han Reddy will be the
‘prabhari’. In Maha-
rashtra, LoP Devendra
Fadnavis will mantle
the RS efforts for the
BJP
, he said.
Then, the party has
also made an ambitious
efforttocapitalizeonthe
disillusionment within
the Congress party
. This
is to try and secure one
extra seat from states
where the Congress is
battlingin-fightingwith-
in its party cadre.
“Look at Rajasthan
where the Congress (108
MLAs) has nominated
three rank outsiders for
the Rajya Sabha polls.
The BJP (71 MLAs) can
elect one candidate to
the Upper House of Par-
liament, but has engi-
neered the independent
candidature of news
media baron Subhash
Chandra, whom we are
supporting to skew the
pitch for the third Con-
gresscandidatePramod
Tiwari,” the senior BJP
leader told First India.

Omicron variants B4, B5 ‘friendly’ towards Indians
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: Even as the
number of nCoV-posi-
tive patients in Mumbai
has crossed the 1,000-

heart from the fact that
the Omicron variants

UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI - PART 8
‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’
NaMO
ETERNAL PM
ALWAYS “AS
GOOD AS YOU
SAW ME LAST!”
ema Malini highlights the affable
temperament
of PM Modi. Although
he is the Prime Minister of India,
yet if someone interacts with him at
a personal level he is bound to come
across as a friendly person. Convers-
ing with him is like talking to one’s
brother or a family member. “How
are you?” I ask Modiji when I meet
him and he always responds with a
smile “Just as you saw me last.”
This simplicity endears PM Modi
not just to me, but to everyone who
gets in touch with him.
Dharamji is a diehard fan of
Modiji. He always says that Modiji
is a fakir and has even composed
couplets on him. When he reads
them out to me, I tell Dharamji to
please share them with his real
muse, the PM, who has evoked such
deep feelings that have resulted in
such sweet verses. Once Dharamji
requested me to get him in touch
with the PM and when I did, he was
totally elated after a conversation
with Modiji. All I can say is that
there cannot be someone more gen-
tle and truly nice like him!
n 2022 if there is one thing the
professional world is struggling
with- it is time management.
At
the same time, the other vital
aspect of time management
is
time prioritization
. While peo-
ple have no choice but to take
time out for work, they often for-
get to take time out for people.
This incident is not just about
the love and passion of a kar-
yakarta for PM Modi, it is a glit-
tering example of how a man
known to be a workaholic, and
forever occupied with national
andinternational
matters,takes
time out for a karyakarta who
has walked more than a 1,000
kms to meet him! Prahald Singh
Patel recollects this touching
story about PM Modi.
Without telling anyone any-
thing, in great secrecy a kar-
yakartasetabouttofulfiladream
thatwasnothingshortof bizarre,
yet it could only be the fabrica-
tion of a mind that was brim-
ming with love and passion that
edged on the side of pure rever-
ence and worship! Setting out on
foot from Sagar, a city in MP
, the
karyakarta’s
ultimate destina-
tion was nothing less than South
Block, New Delhi, a distance of
1,100 kms. As he reached his des-
tination, we got word that a kar-
yakarta is waiting outside at the
gateandwishestomeetPMModi.
He also has stated clearly that if
his wish is not granted, he will
continuetowaitatthegatetillhis
dream is fulfilled.
This was indeed a unique
situation. I was absolutely con-
vinced that the PM would not
have time for all this. After all,
how can the prime minister
grant time to people who wish
to meet him according to their
whims? It would only set a
wrong precedent, for anyone
would think they could walk up
and ask for the prime minister’s
time and it would be granted!
Whatever, I was absolutely cer-
tain that this karyakarta would
have to go back disappointed,
though I could empathise with
his sadness once he got a no
from the PM. I asked the kar-
yakarta to be escorted to my
place and while the message
had been sent to PM’s office
about the peculiarity of the case
at hand, I tried to explain to the
karyakarta about protocols one
has to follow in order to get a
meeting scheduled with the PM.
I was in the middle of explain-
ingtohimthatitisnearlyimpos-
sibleforModijitomeethimwith-
outanypriornoticeandschedul-
ing, I got a call that left me
speechless.“Siriswillingtomeet
the karyakarta. He has been al-
lotted7minutestomeetthePM”,
I could hear the voice on the oth-
er side telling me. As I kept the
phone down, I almost had tears
in my eyes. I could not have im-
aginedinmywildestdreamsthat
a man’s passion could be recog-
nised by the PM Modi and more
than that it was a great lesson to
me in time-managem
ent. The
way Modiji values human emo-
tions, and the level at which he
manages time has no parallel.
The karyakarta of course
was overjoyed. He got those 7
minutes with the man he wor-
shiped and the message that
was sent out to the karyakarta
community and the people of
the country was truly inspira-
tional. Only a true leader and a
visionary can visualize, plan,
empathize and express his love
for his fellowmen in ways PM
Modi does. For me, the success
one achieves in one’s life boils
down to how well one manages
his time, and PM Modi is a time
manager par excellence!

A LESSON IN TIME MANAGEMENT

‘A CALL THAT LEFT
ME SPEECHLESS’
I
got a call that left me
speechless. “Sir is willing
to meet the karyakarta. He
has been allotted 7 minutes

hear the voice on the other
side telling me. As I kept the
phone down, I almost had
tears in my eyes. I could not
have imagined in my wildest
dreams that a man’s passion
could be recognised by the
PM Modi and more than that
it was a great lesson to me
in time-management. The

Mumbai Police to continue
probe against Mohit Kamboj
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Mum-

that they will contin-

against Bharatiya Ja-
nata Party (BJP)
leader Mohit Kamboj
in a fraud case regis-
tered by the Econom-
ic Offences Wing
(EOW), despite the
fact that the com-
plainant in the case,
an Indian Overseas
Bank manager, with-
drew his complaint
the day before.
Following the filing
of a first information
report (FIR), Kamboj
tweeted on Wednesday
a letter allegedly writ-
ten by the complainant
in the case to the joint
commissioner of police
(EOW). In the letter, the
chief regional manager
of Indian Overseas
Bank (IOB) requests
that the complaint
against Kamboj be
withdrawn because a
similar complaint has
already been filed with
the Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI).
Kamboj added in the
tweetthathewouldgoto
court to fight the “mis-
use of power and fabri-
cation of FIR.” In an-
other tweet, he claimed
that the bank due had
been settled and that he
was only acting as a
guarantor. However, a

that the investigation
would be continued.
A case was registered

The FIR was lodged
after a preliminary en-

April 05 in a plea filed by
Param Bir Singh, then
Mumbai police commis-

.The chargesheet
comes a day after the

urged the Maharash-

name a 400-bed hospi-

AIMIM MP Imitiaz

in this regard, ahead
of Munde’s death an-
niversary on June 03.
A 400-bed hospital is
under construction on
Jalna road in Aurang-

intervention, the court
had ordered construc-
tion of a medical facil-
ity instead of a memo-
rial for the late BJP
leader, wrote Jaleel.
“I oppose erection of
statues and memorials
of leaders in the state
and it will continue in
future. Instead of
erecting memorials
and statues, it will be a
tribute to create facili-
ties for people and
name them after these
great leaders. I have
respect for Gopinath
Munde, as he was
deeply connected with
the rural areas,” said
the AIMIM leader, in
the letter. He said that
the court had ordered
the setting up of a hos-

location of the memo-
rial, and added that
the medical facility
should be named after
Munde.

THE CASE
Masks may become mandatory if
COVID-19 spike continues: DyCM
First India Bureau
Mumbai: State Depu-
ty Chief Minister Ajit
Pawar, on Thursday
,
expressed concern
over the rise in COV-
ID-19 cases in Maha-
rashtra and said that
the use of face masks
will have to be made
mandatory if the
spike continues.
“The use of face
masks will have to be
made mandatory if the
number of coronavi-
rus cases continues to
grow,” he said. Maha-
rashtra on Wednesday
recorded 1,081 cases of
the infection, the high-
est daily rise after Feb-
ruary 24, which took
the overall tally to
78,88,167, while the
death toll is 1,47,860.
On Tuesday, the state
had reported 711 cases.
Talking to reporters
here, Pawar said the
state government and
its administrative ma-
chinery were keeping
a vigil to ensure things
don’t go out of hand.
Replying to a ques-
tion, the senior NCP
leader, who is also the
state finance minister,
said that Maharashtra
was to receive Rs29,647
crore GST dues from
the Centre as on March
2022. Two days ago, the
state received Rs 14,145
crore, but it is yet to get
Rs 15,502 crore, he said.
“We still need to get
Rs 1,029 crore from
2019-20, Rs 6,470 crore
from 2020-21, while the
dues of 2021-22 are Rs
8,003 crore,” he said.
Pawar said the state
government has fore-
gone the revenue of Rs
3,500 crore by lowering
tax on fuel and gas.
He asserted that vot-
ing for the Rajya Sabha
election will happen
through an open ballot
and hence there was no
question of anybody
indulging in horse-
trading.
“As per the strength
of the state legislative
Assembly, BJP can get
two seats elected, while
Congress, NCP and
Shiv Sena one seat
each. Shiv Sena has
fielded one more candi-
date and NCP’s excess
votes will go to the sec-
ond candidate of Sena.
Some independents
are affiliated to Shiv
Sena, some to BJP and
some others to NCP.
This is the reason for
speculation about
horse-trading,” he
said.

to express gratitude to-
wards the Indian gov-
ernment, citizens of
Kolhapur and the royal
family that offered pro-
tection and food to the
persecuted community
.
The statement fur-
ther quoted Burakows-

FACTORY OWNER’S WIFE IN 2016
26-YR-OLD MAN COMMITS SUICIDE BY
HANGING SELF AT HIS HOME IN NAGPUR
Thane: A court in Thane district sentenced a
35-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing
his factory owner’s wife in 2016 as a result
of a one-sided love affair. In his order passed
on May 31, district judge at Kalyan, Shoukat
Gorwade, held Manoranjan Mahakand guilty of
killing the 35-year-old woman. The convict used
to work at the factory based in Ambarnath in
the district. Additional public prosecutor Sachin
Kulkarni told the court that the accused used to
frequently visit the house of his factory owner
and fell in love with his wife. During one such
visit to their house on March 24, 2016, he found
the victim talking to someone else. Suspecting
that she was in love with somebody, he dragged
her to the kitchen and stabbed her to death, he
said.
Nagpur: A 26-year-old man committed suicide
by hanging himself at his home in Nagpur city
on Wednesday, police said. The incident took
place in the Rana Pratap Nagar area of the city
in the early hours of the day, an official said.
Tejas Suryakant Malwatkar, a resident of Pande
Layout, was found hanging from the ceiling
fan at his first-floor apartment, he said. The
victim worked at the metro station in Nagpur

sister currently reside, the official said. A suicide
note was recovered from the scene, in which the
victim claimed that he was taking the extreme
step as god was calling him, he said.
Thane: Four godowns were destroyed in a major
fire in a complex in Bhiwandi township of Thane
district, a civic official said on Thursday. The fire
incident occurred in the godown complex located in
Dapoda area around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, chief
of Thane civic body’s regional disaster management
cell (RDMC) Avinash Sawant said. Nobody was
injured in the blaze, he said. “Two fire engines of
the civic bodies of Bhiwandi Nizampur and Thane

three hours before it was brought under control,”
Sawant said, adding that the cause of the fire is
being probed.
Gadchiroli: A State Reserve Police Force (SRPF)

288 fishermen compensated for
releasing marine species from nets
First India Bureau
Mumbai: In the last
three years, the Ma-
harashtra govern-
ment has paid out `44
lakh in compensation
to 288 fishermen for
releasing protected
marine species caught
in their nets.
This is part of the
state’s efforts to save the
marine ecosystem and
the endangered species
that live within it.
Among the marine spe-
cies released by fisher-
men between December
2018 and March 2019 are
the Whale Shark, Giant
Guitarfish, Humpback
Dolphin, and Indo-Pa-
cific finless porpoise.
The Wildlife (Protec-
tion) Act of 1972 pro-
tects all of them.
The compensation
scheme is a joint effort
by the Mangrove Cell
and Mangrove Founda-
tion, and the Fisheries
Department of Maha-
rashtra. Fishermen re-
ceive monetary com-
pensation of up to
`25,000 as they have to
cut their fishing nets in
order to release marine
species which get entan-
gled in their nets by ac-
cident. The scheme was
implemented to encour-
age fishermen to re-
lease protected species
in exchange for mone-
tary compensation.
According to the offi-
cial, from December
2018 to March 2022, a
total of 293 cases were
received for compensa-
tion by the Fisheries
Department, out of
which 288 fishermen
were given compensa-
tion amounting in total
to `44.23 lakh.
The official further
said that during fishing,
if any fisherman releas-
es a rare fish or marine
animal entangled in his
net, and if the fishing
net is cut or damaged in
the process, the fisher-
man should file an ap-
plication before the
Chief Conservator of
Forests, Mangrove Pro-
tection Cell, following
which the state govern-
ment will provide com-
pensation up to `25,000.
Monetary
compensation up to
`25,000 is given to
fishermen as they
have to cut off their
fishing nets in order
to release marine
species that get
accidentally tangled
in their fishing nets
Court awards death penalty
to Saki Naka rape accused
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Din-
doshi Sessions Court
in Mumbai on Thurs-
day awarded the death
penalty to 44–year-old
Mohan Katthwaru
Chauhan for the bru-
tal rape and murder of
a 32-year-old Dalit
woman in Mumbai’s
Saki Naka area in Sep-
tember 2021.
Thecrime,whichtook
place inside a parked
tempo on Khairani Road
in the wee hours, had
sent shockwaves
through the city and
evoked the memories of
the 2012 Delhi gangrape
case due to the brutality
involved. Chauhan had
an altercation with the
woman, and around 2.45
am, he pulled her inside
a parked tempo and
raped her. He inserted
hard objects in her pri-
vate parts. While the ac-
cused was arrested
hours later, the woman
battled for life for more
than30hoursbeforesuc-
cumbing to her injuries
on September 11.
Observing that the
case was the “rarest of
the rare” due to the
grievous injuries inflict-
ed on the woman, Spe-
cial Judge HC Shende
agreedwiththeprosecu-
tion’s argument that the
accused had injured the
woman fatally and left
no chance of her sur-
vival as her intestines
were so badly damaged
that her digestive sys-
tem was destroyed.
The defendant, Chau-
han, sought leniency
and interrupted the pro-
ceedings several times
accusing the police of
fabricating the case. His
lawyer said the case
could not be compared
with the Nirbhaya rape
case and urged the court
to give the accused a
chance to reform.
The incident was in-
human and “brought
dreadful shivers up the
spine in thinking about
it,” the judge noted in
the order.
“To show leniency or
mercy in the case of
such heinous crime and
to an accused who has
shown no repentance or
remorseafterexhibiting
an extremely depraved
mentality would be a
travesty of justice,” said
the court.
Earlier, while seeking
death penalty for the ac-
cused, prosecutor Ma-
hesh Mule had pointed
out that this was “an of-
fence against a woman
and that too, a woman
belongingtoascheduled
caste that makes it more
serious.”
Terming it ‘rarest
of rare’ case, Spl
Judge HC Shende
refused to show
leniency as ‘it
would be a

UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI - PART 8
‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’
NaMO
ETERNAL PM
ALWAYS “AS
GOOD AS YOU
SAW ME LAST!”
ema Malini highlights the affable
temperament of PM Modi. Although
he is the Prime Minister of India,
yet if someone interacts with him at
a personal level he is bound to come
across as a friendly person. Convers-
ing with him is like talking to one’s
brother or a family member. “How
are you?” I ask Modiji when I meet
him and he always responds with a
smile “Just as you saw me last.”
This simplicity endears PM Modi
not just to me, but to everyone who
gets in touch with him.
Dharamji is a diehard fan of
Modiji. He always says that Modiji
is a fakir and has even composed
couplets on him. When he reads
them out to me, I tell Dharamji to
please share them with his real
muse, the PM, who has evoked such
deep feelings that have resulted in
such sweet verses. Once Dharamji
requested me to get him in touch
with the PM and when I did, he was
totally elated after a conversation
with Modiji. All I can say is that
there cannot be someone more gen-
tle and truly nice like him!
n 2022 if there is one thing the
professional world is struggling
with- it is time management. At
the same time, the other vital
aspect of time management is
time prioritization. While peo-
ple have no choice but to take
time out for work, they often for-
get to take time out for people.
This incident is not just about
the love and passion of a kar-
yakarta for PM Modi, it is a glit-
tering example of how a man
known to be a workaholic, and
forever occupied with national
andinternationalmatters,takes
time out for a karyakarta who
has walked more than a 1,000
kms to meet him! Prahald Singh
Patel recollects this touching
story about PM Modi.
Without telling anyone any-
thing, in great secrecy a kar-
yakartasetabouttofulfiladream
thatwasnothingshortof bizarre,
yet it could only be the fabrica-
tion of a mind that was brim-
ming with love and passion that
edged on the side of pure rever-
ence and worship! Setting out on
foot from Sagar, a city in MP
, the
karyakarta’s ultimate destina-
tion was nothing less than South
Block, New Delhi, a distance of
1,100 kms. As he reached his des-
tination, we got word that a kar-
yakarta is waiting outside at the
gateandwishestomeetPMModi.
He also has stated clearly that if
his wish is not granted, he will
continuetowaitatthegatetillhis
dream is fulfilled.
This was indeed a unique
situation. I was absolutely con-
vinced that the PM would not
have time for all this. After all,
how can the prime minister
grant time to people who wish
to meet him according to their
whims? It would only set a
wrong precedent, for anyone
would think they could walk up
and ask for the prime minister’s
time and it would be granted!
Whatever, I was absolutely cer-
tain that this karyakarta would
have to go back disappointed,
though I could empathise with
his sadness once he got a no
from the PM. I asked the kar-
yakarta to be escorted to my
place and while the message
had been sent to PM’s office
about the peculiarity of the case
at hand, I tried to explain to the
karyakarta about protocols one
has to follow in order to get a
meeting scheduled with the PM.
I was in the middle of explain-
ingtohimthatitisnearlyimpos-
sibleforModijitomeethimwith-
outanypriornoticeandschedul-
ing, I got a call that left me
speechless.“Siriswillingtomeet
the karyakarta. He has been al-
lotted7minutestomeetthePM”,
I could hear the voice on the oth-
er side telling me. As I kept the
phone down, I almost had tears
in my eyes. I could not have im-
aginedinmywildestdreamsthat
a man’s passion could be recog-
nised by the PM Modi and more
than that it was a great lesson to
me in time-management. The
way Modiji values human emo-
tions, and the level at which he
manages time has no parallel.
The karyakarta of course
was overjoyed. He got those 7
minutes with the man he wor-
shiped and the message that
was sent out to the karyakarta
community and the people of
the country was truly inspira-
tional. Only a true leader and a
visionary can visualize, plan,
empathize and express his love
for his fellowmen in ways PM
Modi does. For me, the success
one achieves in one’s life boils
down to how well one manages
his time, and PM Modi is a time
manager par excellence!

I

tears in my eyes. I could not
have imagined in my wildest

could be recognised by the
PM Modi and more than that
it was a great lesson to me

87 registered unrecognised parties struck off EC’s list
New Delhi (PTI): The
Election Commission

struck off 87 entities
from its list of Regis-
tered Unrecognised
Political Parties
(RUPP) after they were
found non-existent
during physical verifi-
cation, officials said
on Thursday.
The action followed a
statement by the poll
panel a few days back
announcing action
against more than 2,100
registered unrecog-
nised political parties
for flouting rules and
election law, including
those related to filing of
monetary contribu-
tions, failing to update
their address and
names of office bearers.
It had said some of
these parties were in-
dulging in “serious” fi-
nancial impropriety
.
The poll panel had
noted that 87 RUPPs
had failed to update
their address of com-
munication as mandat-
ed by law.
These parties were
found to be non-existent
after physical verifica-
tion carried out by the
chief electoral officers
of the respective states,
sources said.
On Thursday, the EC
shared a list of the
RUPPs whose names
have been deleted.
The Commission had
carried out such exer-

ALLEGING GOVT’S NEW RULES ‘LIMIT INTERNET FREEDOM’
EXPRESSVPNREMOVES
VPN SERVERS IN INDIA
First major virtual private network (VPN) provider to quit India
New Delhi (Agencies):
While slamming the
April 29 directions of
the Indian Computer
Emergency Response
Team (CERT-In), virtu-
al private network
(VPN) service provider
ExpressVPN an-
nounced that it has re-
moved its Indian-based
VPN servers.
Under the new direc-
tions, service providers
will have to store users’
names, IP addresses as-
signed to them, usage
patterns and other data.
ExpressVPN said that
the directions are “in-
compatiblewiththepur-
pose of VPNs, which are
designed to keep users’
online activity private”.
However, the reason
behind the removal of
the India-based servers
is not just a policy-based
decision for Express-
VPN. The VPN service
said that their servers
arespecificallydesigned
to not store logs. “Data
centers are unlikely to
be able to accommodate
this policy and our serv-
er architecture under
this new regulation, and
thus we will move for-
ward without physical
servers in India,” the
VPN service provider
said in a blogpost.
This decision by Ex-
pressVPN comes after
several (VPN) service
providers criticised
CERT-In’s recent di-
rections.
INDIAN USERS WILL STILL HAVE ACCESS
The British Virgin Island-based VPN clarified that removing its India-based
servers will not mean that Indian users will not be able to access its services.
“Rest assured, our users will still be able to connect to VPN servers that will
give them Indian IP addresses and allow them to access the internet as if they
were located in India. These “virtual” India servers will instead be physically
located in Singapore and the UK,” ExpressVPN said in a blog. ExpressVPN also
clarified that users will experience ‘minimal difference’ because of this change.
“In terms of the user experience, there is minimal difference. For anyone want-
ing to connect to an Indian server, simply select the VPN server location “India
(via Singapore)” or “India (via UK),” ExpressVPN said.

SBI revises up FY23 eco
growth forecast to 7.5%
Mumbai (PTI): SBI Re-
search has projected
the Indian economy to
grow at 7.5% in 2022-23,
an upward revision of
20 basis points from its
earlier estimate.
As per official data,
the economy grew by
8.7% in FY22, net add-
ing `11.8 lakh crore in
the year to `147 lakh
crore, the report said,
adding this was howev-
er only 1.5% higher
than the pre-pandemic
year of FY20.
“Given the high infla-
tion and the subsequent
upcoming rate hikes,
we believe that real
GDP will incrementally
increase by Rs 11.1 lakh
crore in FY23. This still
translates into a real
GDP growth of 7.5% for
FY23, up by 20 basis
points over our previ-
ous forecast,” SBI chief
economist Soumyakan-
ti Ghosh said in a note
on Thursday
.
Nominal GDP ex-
panded by `38.6 lakh
crore to `237 lakh crore,
or 19.5% annualised. In
FY23 also, as inflation
remains elevated in the
first half, nominal GDP
will grow 16.1% to `275
lakh crore, he said.
The report basis its
optimism on the rising
corporate revenue and
profit and the growing
bank credit coupled
with ample liquidity in
the system.
On rising corporate
growth, the report notes
that in FY22, around
2,000 listed companies
reported 29% top line
growth and 52% jump
in net profit over the
previous year.
Construction sectors
including cement, steel,
etc reported impressive
growth in both revenue
as well as net income
with 45% and 53%, rise
respectively in revenue.
Interestingly, the or-
der book position re-
mains strong, with con-
struction major LT
reporting 9% growth in
order book position at
`3.6 lakh crore as of
March, supported by
10% growth in order in-
flow of `1.9 lakh crore
in FY22 and `1.7 lakh
crore in FY21.
SBI Chief
economist says
real GDP will
incrementally
increase by
`11.1 lakh
crore in FY23
Given the high inflation and the subse-
quent upcoming rate hikes, we believe
that real GDP will incrementally increase
by `11.1 lakh crore in FY23. This still translates
into a real GDP growth of 7.5% for FY23, up by
20 basis points over our previous forecast.

fiscal deficit may re-
main elevated at 10.2%
of GDP in FY23, down
20 bps from FY22, ac-
cording to a report.
As per the report, the
central deficit is expect-
ed to be at 6.7% and
states’ at 3.5% in the
current fiscal.
The government has
pegged the combined
fiscal shortfall at 9.8%
of which the central
deficit is seen at 6.4%
(down from 6.7% in
FY22) and states’ at
3.4% for FY23.
While these meas-
ures may help soften
inflationary pressures
by about 50 bps over the
coming months, that
will not be enough to
bring inflation within
the RBI comfort zone of
4 (+/-2) % unless global
commodity prices mod-
erate significantly, UBS
Securities warned in a
note on Thursday
.
The brokerage also
maintained that CPI av-
eraging 6.5-7% in FY23
will force the RBI-MPC
to gradually hike the
repo rate to 5.5% by
FY23-end and to 6% by
FY24-end to help con-
tain the second-round
impact of higher input
prices on the real econ-
omy, Tanvee Gupta
Jain, UBS Securities
chief India economist
said.
She also noted that
these steps imply that
the consolidated fiscal
deficit will be at an ele-
vated 10.2% of GDP of
which the Central defi-
cit may be at 6.7 per cent
and the states’ at 3.5%
in FY23 from 10.4% in
FY22.

CM Thackeray slams officials
for no action in Aurangabad
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: At a review
meeting held on
Thursday, Chief Min-
ister Uddhav Thack-
eray lost his cool and
demanded that the
water crisis in Au-
rangabad (also known
as Sambhajinagar un-
officially) be dealt
with swiftly. Inciden-
tally, around `1,680
crore outlay was an-
nounced in the annual
budget of the state in
March 2022.
Presently, only 2% of
the new water supply
pipeline project work
has been completed at a
cost of `39 crore. As
citizens go without wa-
ter for as many as five-
day stretches at a time,
CM Thackeray asked
officials to address the
issue at the earliest.
“Don’t give me excuses.
I want a way out,” he
roared, at the meet.
According to a senior
state secretariat official,
“The water require-
ments of the district are
met from the Jayakwadi
dam. But the existing
pipeline is over 25 years
old. While 120 million
litresaday(MLD)of wa-
ter is the total require-
ment, existing infra-
structure is only able to
provide 90 MLD of wa-
ter to people.”
The mismatch has
only been aggravated by
the unscrupulous tank-
er lobby, owned and op-
erated by politicians
across the board. The
CM has a right to be an-
gry
, he added.
Until recently, the
Shiv Sena-Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) alli-
ance was in power at
the Aurangabad Mu-
nicipal Corporation
(AMC), until an admin-
istrator took charge af-
ter the tenure of the
civic body ended. The
BJP has upped the ante
and launched public
protests over the water
crisis, with an eye on
the civic corporation
elections that will be
held over the next few
months.
As reported by First
India, Chief Minister
Uddhav Thackeray has
scheduledapublicmeet-
ing on June 08, 2022 in
Aurangabad. The Shiv
Sena is keen to take
complete control over
the civic corporation.
At Thursday’s meet-
ing, the CM directed
divisional commission-
ers to look into how
much water can be add-
ed to the existing water
supply system in the
district to ease the prob-
lems faced by citizens.
He also threatened
action against the con-
tractors for slow-pedal-
ling the work.
Water crisis in
the district has
parched citizens,
as they survive
without it in
5-day stretches
Over the last
few years, three
contractors took
up the project but left the
work unfinished in the
wake of public protests
and a politico-tanker
lobby nexus. Moreover,
recent cost escalations of
the pipeline material after
the Centre hiked prices
of certain commodities
have been witnessed. The
previous contractor was
demanding a cost differ-
ential of over `3-4 crore.

  • 1. Renni Abraham Mumbai: As Con- gress deals with in- fighting among par- ty workers, the Bharati- ya Janata Party (BJP) has focused its efforts for the 57 Rajya Sabha seats at stake in upcom- ingpolls.Itaimstocome up with a gameplan to wrest more seats than the possible numbers it holds sway over. The BJP began its RS campaign by focusing only on political candi- dates, having shrugged off the concept of nomi- nating either philan- thropists, businessmen, sportspersons or actors. This has been followed up with the appoint- ment of ‘prabharis’ (state in-charges) for fiveof thecrucialstates, making it clear that the party does not take the RS polls lightly . “TheBJPhadconcen- trated on social engi- neering for the 57 Rajya Sabha seats, elections forwhichwillbeheldon June 10. We have nomi- nated a big chunk of 22 candidates from the Scheduled Caste (ST) and Scheduled Tribe (ST), 9 Other Backward Classes (OBC) candi- dates, six women and 20 others from the open category to include up- per caste Brahmin, Thakur and Baniya classes of society,” a senior BJP leader told First India. According to this leader, this conscious move has dissipated the caste census bogey raised by political de- tractors like the Rash- triya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar. For Rajasthan, the party has appointed Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister for agri- culture and farmers’ welfare to steward the RS battle. Similarly, in Karnataka Union Min- ister of Tourism G Kis- han Reddy will be the ‘prabhari’. In Maha- rashtra, LoP Devendra Fadnavis will mantle the RS efforts for the BJP , he said. Then, the party has also made an ambitious efforttocapitalizeonthe disillusionment within the Congress party . This is to try and secure one extra seat from states where the Congress is battlingin-fightingwith- in its party cadre. “Look at Rajasthan where the Congress (108 MLAs) has nominated three rank outsiders for the Rajya Sabha polls. The BJP (71 MLAs) can elect one candidate to the Upper House of Par- liament, but has engi- neered the independent candidature of news media baron Subhash Chandra, whom we are supporting to skew the pitch for the third Con- gresscandidatePramod Tiwari,” the senior BJP leader told First India. BJP turns laser-focus to RS polls, as Cong struggles OTHER STATES The ruling party will try and secure an additional seat than its total strength in Raj, Maha, Karnataka and Haryana Omicron variants B4, B5 ‘friendly’ towards Indians Renni Abraham Mumbai: Even as the number of nCoV-posi- tive patients in Mumbai has crossed the 1,000- mark, citizens can take heart from the fact that the Omicron variants (including strains B4 andB5)havenotaffected Indian citizens much. Confirming this, dean of the JJ Group of Hos- pitals Dr Pallavi Saple toldFirstIndia,“Indians appeartohavedeveloped (herd) immunity to the Omicron strain of COVID-19.Thisseems tobeoneof themainrea- sons why we are not re- ceiving more patients suffering from severe ill- nesses or even those re- quiring ventilator sup- port. This is certainly heartening.” Incidentally , Dr Saple is credited with the first major success against the COVID-19 pandemic back in 2020 that became renowned as the ‘Sangli model’. She brought the district Turn to P6 NO DANGER We have developed herd immunity to the virus strain, says Dr Pallavi Saple of JJ Group of Hospitals Malegaon had developed herd immunity in the 1st wave itself, although the mortality rate was the highest in May 2020. In the subsequent 2nd 3rd wave of infections, the mortality was not that high. After the first wave itself, we had found that in some pockets over 90% of the population had devel- oped antibodies and im- munity to COVID-19, even before the vaccines were available. —Dr Pallavi Saple, Dean, JJ Group of hospitals Devendra Fadnavis UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI - PART 8 ‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ NaMO ETERNAL PM ALWAYS “AS GOOD AS YOU SAW ME LAST!” ema Malini highlights the affable temperament of PM Modi. Although he is the Prime Minister of India, yet if someone interacts with him at a personal level he is bound to come across as a friendly person. Convers- ing with him is like talking to one’s brother or a family member. “How are you?” I ask Modiji when I meet him and he always responds with a smile “Just as you saw me last.” This simplicity endears PM Modi not just to me, but to everyone who gets in touch with him. Dharamji is a diehard fan of Modiji. He always says that Modiji is a fakir and has even composed couplets on him. When he reads them out to me, I tell Dharamji to please share them with his real muse, the PM, who has evoked such deep feelings that have resulted in such sweet verses. Once Dharamji requested me to get him in touch with the PM and when I did, he was totally elated after a conversation with Modiji. All I can say is that there cannot be someone more gen- tle and truly nice like him! n 2022 if there is one thing the professional world is struggling with- it is time management. At the same time, the other vital aspect of time management is time prioritization . While peo- ple have no choice but to take time out for work, they often for- get to take time out for people. This incident is not just about the love and passion of a kar- yakarta for PM Modi, it is a glit- tering example of how a man known to be a workaholic, and forever occupied with national andinternational matters, takes time out for a karyakarta who has walked more than a 1,000 kms to meet him! Prahald Singh Patel recollects this touching story about PM Modi. Without telling anyone any- thing, in great secrecy a kar- yakartasetabouttofulfiladream thatwasnothingshortof bizarre, yet it could only be the fabrica- tion of a mind that was brim- ming with love and passion that edged on the side of pure rever- ence and worship! Setting out on foot from Sagar, a city in MP , the karyakarta’s ultimate destina- tion was nothing less than South Block, New Delhi, a distance of 1,100 kms. As he reached his des- tination, we got word that a kar- yakarta is waiting outside at the gateandwishestomeetPMModi. He also has stated clearly that if his wish is not granted, he will continuetowaitatthegatetillhis dream is fulfilled. This was indeed a unique situation. I was absolutely con- vinced that the PM would not have time for all this. After all, how can the prime minister grant time to people who wish to meet him according to their whims? It would only set a wrong precedent, for anyone would think they could walk up and ask for the prime minister’s time and it would be granted! Whatever, I was absolutely cer- tain that this karyakarta would have to go back disappointed, though I could empathise with his sadness once he got a no from the PM. I asked the kar- yakarta to be escorted to my place and while the message had been sent to PM’s office about the peculiarity of the case at hand, I tried to explain to the karyakarta about protocols one has to follow in order to get a meeting scheduled with the PM. I was in the middle of explain- ingtohimthatitisnearlyimpos- sibleforModijitomeethimwith- outanypriornoticeandschedul- ing, I got a call that left me speechless.“Siriswillingtomeet the karyakarta. He has been al- lotted7minutestomeetthePM”, I could hear the voice on the oth- er side telling me. As I kept the phone down, I almost had tears in my eyes. I could not have im- aginedinmywildestdreamsthat a man’s passion could be recog- nised by the PM Modi and more than that it was a great lesson to me in time-managem ent. The way Modiji values human emo- tions, and the level at which he manages time has no parallel. The karyakarta of course was overjoyed. He got those 7 minutes with the man he wor- shiped and the message that was sent out to the karyakarta community and the people of the country was truly inspira- tional. Only a true leader and a visionary can visualize, plan, empathize and express his love for his fellowmen in ways PM Modi does. For me, the success one achieves in one’s life boils down to how well one manages his time, and PM Modi is a time manager par excellence! TO BE CONTINUED… H I 7 MINS WITH PM MODI A LESSON IN TIME MANAGEMENT YOU READ PART-7 ON JUNE 2, 2022 ‘A CALL THAT LEFT ME SPEECHLESS’ I got a call that left me speechless. “Sir is willing to meet the karyakarta. He has been allotted 7 minutes to meet the PM”, I could hear the voice on the other side telling me. As I kept the phone down, I almost had tears in my eyes. I could not have imagined in my wildest dreams that a man’s passion could be recognised by the PM Modi and more than that it was a great lesson to me in time-management. The way Modiji values human emotions, and the level at which he manages time has no parallel. COMPILED AND EDITED BY SHASHIKANT SHARMA AND SHWETA SHARMA AS SELFLESS AS A FAKIR... ASK DHARAM! Following the filing of a first information report (FIR), Kamboj tweeted on Wednesday a letter allegedly writ- ten by the complainant in the case to the joint commissioner of police (EOW). In the letter, the chief regional manager of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) requests that the complaint against Kamboj be withdrawn because a similar complaint has already been filed with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Kamboj added in the tweetthathewouldgoto court to fight the “mis- use of power and fabri- cation of FIR.” In an- other tweet, he claimed that the bank due had been settled and that he was only acting as a guarantor. The FIR was lodged after a preliminary en- quiry based on a com- plaint and Bombay High Court’s directives of April 05 in a plea filed by Param Bir Singh, then Mumbai police commis- sioner. In March, 2021, Singh had written a let- ter to the Chief Minister alleging that Desh- mukh,thenhomeminis- ter, had asked police per- sonnel to collect Rs100 crore per month from restaurants and bars in the city .The chargesheet comes a day after the Special CBI Court judge DP Shingade approved Vaze’s application to turn a witness. The judge had told Vaze that he is allowing the appli- cation based on the con- dition that he makes a full disclosure in the case; and truthfully an- swers the questions posedbythepublicpros- ecutor during the trial. AIMIM MP Imitiaz Jaleel on Thursday wrote to Chief Minis- ter Uddhav Thackeray in this regard, ahead of Munde’s death an- niversary on June 03. A 400-bed hospital is under construction on Jalna road in Aurang- abad. After judicial intervention, the court had ordered construc- tion of a medical facil- ity instead of a memo- rial for the late BJP leader, wrote Jaleel. “I oppose erection of statues and memorials of leaders in the state and it will continue in future. Instead of erecting memorials and statues, it will be a tribute to create facili- ties for people and name them after these great leaders. I have respect for Gopinath Munde, as he was deeply connected with the rural areas,” said the AIMIM leader, in the letter. He said that the court had ordered the setting up of a hos- pital over the proposed location of the memo- rial, and added that the medical facility should be named after Munde. THE CASE Masks may become mandatory if COVID-19 spike continues: DyCM First India Bureau Mumbai: State Depu- ty Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, on Thursday , expressed concern over the rise in COV- ID-19 cases in Maha- rashtra and said that the use of face masks will have to be made mandatory if the spike continues. “The use of face masks will have to be made mandatory if the number of coronavi- rus cases continues to grow,” he said. Maha- rashtra on Wednesday recorded 1,081 cases of the infection, the high- est daily rise after Feb- ruary 24, which took the overall tally to 78,88,167, while the death toll is 1,47,860. On Tuesday, the state had reported 711 cases. Talking to reporters here, Pawar said the state government and its administrative ma- chinery were keeping a vigil to ensure things don’t go out of hand. Replying to a ques- tion, the senior NCP leader, who is also the state finance minister, said that Maharashtra was to receive Rs29,647 crore GST dues from the Centre as on March 2022. Two days ago, the state received Rs 14,145 crore, but it is yet to get Rs 15,502 crore, he said. “We still need to get Rs 1,029 crore from 2019-20, Rs 6,470 crore from 2020-21, while the dues of 2021-22 are Rs 8,003 crore,” he said. Pawar said the state government has fore- gone the revenue of Rs 3,500 crore by lowering tax on fuel and gas. He asserted that vot- ing for the Rajya Sabha election will happen through an open ballot and hence there was no question of anybody indulging in horse- trading. “As per the strength of the state legislative Assembly, BJP can get two seats elected, while Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena one seat each. Shiv Sena has fielded one more candi- date and NCP’s excess votes will go to the sec- ond candidate of Sena. Some independents are affiliated to Shiv Sena, some to BJP and some others to NCP. This is the reason for speculation about horse-trading,” he said. They have been asked to ap- pear in connection with a money laun- dering case. Addressing a news conference in Ahmed- nagar district, Congress in-charge of Maharash- tra, HK Patil, said that the ED’s notice to its leaders is nothing but “vendetta and unneces- sary harassment”. “It is very unfortu- nate that the BJP gov- ernment is misusing, abusing the authority and using the ED to harass opposition lead- ers,” he said. Patil was flanked by Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole, for- mer chief ministers Ashok Chavan and Su- shilkumar Shinde, and state ministers Balasa- heb Thorat, Varsha Gaikwad, and Yashomati Thakur. Maharashtra Con- gress leaders are in Shirdi to hold deliber- ations ahead of Rajya Sabha polls, on the lines of the Chintan Shivir held in Udaipur last month. Speaking on the ED summons, Patole said Congress will an- nounce its strategy. This is part of the state’s efforts to save the marine ecosystem and the endangered species that live within it. Among the marine spe- cies released by fisher- men between December 2018 and March 2019 are the Whale Shark, Giant Guitarfish, Humpback Dolphin, and Indo-Pa- cific finless porpoise. The Wildlife (Protec- tion) Act of 1972 pro- tects all of them. The compensation scheme is a joint effort by the Mangrove Cell and Mangrove Founda- tion, and the Fisheries Department of Maha- rashtra. Fishermen re- ceive monetary com- pensation of up to `25,000 as they have to cut their fishing nets in order to release marine species which get entan- gled in their nets by ac- cident. The scheme was implemented to encour- age fishermen to re- lease protected species in exchange for mone- tary compensation. According to the offi- cial, from December 2018 to March 2022, a total of 293 cases were received for compensa- tion by the Fisheries Department, out of which 288 fishermen were given compensa- tion amounting in total to `44.23 lakh. The official further said that during fishing, if any fisherman releas- es a rare fish or marine animal entangled in his net, and if the fishing net is cut or damaged in the process, the fisher- man should file an ap- plication before the Chief Conservator of Forests, Mangrove Pro- tection Cell, following which the state govern- ment will provide com- pensation up to `25,000. Monetary compensation up to `25,000 is given to fishermen as they have to cut off their fishing nets in order to release marine species that get accidentally tangled in their fishing nets Court awards death penalty to Saki Naka rape accused First India Bureau Mumbai: The Din- doshi Sessions Court in Mumbai on Thurs- day awarded the death penalty to 44–year-old Mohan Katthwaru Chauhan for the bru- tal rape and murder of a 32-year-old Dalit woman in Mumbai’s Saki Naka area in Sep- tember 2021. Thecrime, whichtook place inside a parked tempo on Khairani Road in the wee hours, had sent shockwaves through the city and evoked the memories of the 2012 Delhi gangrape case due to the brutality involved. Chauhan had an altercation with the woman, and around 2.45 am, he pulled her inside a parked tempo and raped her. He inserted hard objects in her pri- vate parts. While the ac- cused was arrested hours later, the woman battled for life for more than30hoursbeforesuc- cumbing to her injuries on September 11. Observing that the case was the “rarest of the rare” due to the grievous injuries inflict- ed on the woman, Spe- cial Judge HC Shende agreedwiththeprosecu- tion’s argument that the accused had injured the woman fatally and left no chance of her sur- vival as her intestines were so badly damaged that her digestive sys- tem was destroyed. The defendant, Chau- han, sought leniency and interrupted the pro- ceedings several times accusing the police of fabricating the case. His lawyer said the case could not be compared with the Nirbhaya rape case and urged the court to give the accused a chance to reform. The incident was in- human and “brought dreadful shivers up the spine in thinking about it,” the judge noted in the order. “To show leniency or mercy in the case of such heinous crime and to an accused who has shown no repentance or remorseafterexhibiting an extremely depraved mentality would be a travesty of justice,” said the court. Earlier, while seeking death penalty for the ac- cused, prosecutor Ma- hesh Mule had pointed out that this was “an of- fence against a woman and that too, a woman belongingtoascheduled caste that makes it more serious.” Terming it ‘rarest of rare’ case, Spl Judge HC Shende refused to show leniency as ‘it would be a travesty of justice’ In the last three years, Maha govt has paid `44 lakh in compensation to fishermen for releasing protected marine species Couple booked for killing 7-yr-old kid First India Bureau Thane: An offence has been registered against a couple who allegedly killed their seven-year-old daugh- ter and attempted sui- cide in Kashimira area of Thane dis- trict, police said on Thursday. The couple later consumed poison. The woman fell unconscious and was rushed to a hospital, while the man fled the scene, an official said. The MBVV police have registered a case under sections 302, 309 (attempted suicide) and other relevant pro- visions of the IPC against Stephen Brako (37) and his wife Poon- am (30), he said. Based on technical inputs, Bracko was traced on May 31. He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, the official said, adding that the couple will be placed under arrest once they recover. At the same time, the other vital aspect of time management is time prioritization. While peo- ple have no choice but to take time out for work, they often for- get to take time out for people. This incident is not just about the love and passion of a kar- yakarta for PM Modi, it is a glit- tering example of how a man known to be a workaholic, and forever occupied with national andinternationalmatters, takes time out for a karyakarta who has walked more than a 1,000 kms to meet him! I could not have im- aginedinmywildestdreamsthat a man’s passion could be recog- nised by the PM Modi and more than that it was a great lesson to me in time-management. ExpressVPN said that the directions are “in- compatiblewiththepur- pose of VPNs, which are designed to keep users’ online activity private”. However, the reason behind the removal of the India-based servers is not just a policy-based decision for Express- VPN. As per official data, the economy grew by 8.7% in FY22, net add- ing `11.8 lakh crore in the year to `147 lakh crore, the report said, adding this was howev- er only 1.5% higher than the pre-pandemic year of FY20. “Given the high infla- tion and the subsequent upcoming rate hikes, we believe that real GDP will incrementally increase by Rs 11.1 lakh crore in FY23. This still translates into a real GDP growth of 7.5% for FY23, up by 20 basis points over our previ- ous forecast,” SBI chief economist Soumyakan- ti Ghosh said in a note on Thursday . Nominal GDP ex- panded by `38.6 lakh crore to `237 lakh crore, or 19.5% annualised. In FY23 also, as inflation remains elevated in the first half, nominal GDP will grow 16.1% to `275 lakh crore, he said. The report basis its optimism on the rising corporate revenue and profit and the growing bank credit coupled with ample liquidity in the system. On rising corporate growth, the report notes that in FY22, around 2,000 listed companies reported 29% top line growth and 52% jump in net profit over the previous year. Construction sectors including cement, steel, etc reported impressive growth in both revenue as well as net income with 45% and 53%, rise respectively in revenue. Interestingly, the or- der book position re- mains strong, with con- struction major LT reporting 9% growth in order book position at `3.6 lakh crore as of March, supported by 10% growth in order in- flow of `1.9 lakh crore in FY22 and `1.7 lakh crore in FY21. He also said RBI may undertake front loading of interest rate hikes to tame inflation which have been over the cen- tral bank’s tolerance level for the past 4 months. Policy tightening to hit fiscal numbers: Report Mumbai (PTI): As the country’s fiscal policy is moving in sync with the monetary policy amid the runaway infla- tion, the tightening measures along with rising subsidies imply that the consolidated fiscal deficit may re- main elevated at 10.2% of GDP in FY23, down 20 bps from FY22, ac- cording to a report. As per the report, the central deficit is expect- ed to be at 6.7% and states’ at 3.5% in the current fiscal. The government has pegged the combined fiscal shortfall at 9.8% of which the central deficit is seen at 6.4% (down from 6.7% in FY22) and states’ at 3.4% for FY23. While these meas- ures may help soften inflationary pressures by about 50 bps over the coming months, that will not be enough to bring inflation within the RBI comfort zone of 4 (+/-2) % unless global commodity prices mod- erate significantly, UBS Securities warned in a note on Thursday . The brokerage also maintained that CPI av- eraging 6.5-7% in FY23 will force the RBI-MPC to gradually hike the repo rate to 5.5% by FY23-end and to 6% by FY24-end to help con- tain the second-round impact of higher input prices on the real econ- omy, Tanvee Gupta Jain, UBS Securities chief India economist said. She also noted that these steps imply that the consolidated fiscal deficit will be at an ele- vated 10.2% of GDP of which the Central defi- cit may be at 6.7 per cent and the states’ at 3.5% in FY23 from 10.4% in FY22. Inciden- tally, around `1,680 crore outlay was an- nounced in the annual budget of the state in March 2022. Presently, only 2% of the new water supply pipeline project work has been completed at a cost of `39 crore. As citizens go without wa- ter for as many as five- day stretches at a time, CM Thackeray asked officials to address the issue at the earliest. “Don’t give me excuses. I want a way out,” he roared, at the meet. According to a senior state secretariat official, “The water require- ments of the district are met from the Jayakwadi dam. But the existing pipeline is over 25 years old. While 120 million litresaday(MLD)of wa- ter is the total require- ment, existing infra- structure is only able to provide 90 MLD of wa- ter to people.” The mismatch has only been aggravated by the unscrupulous tank- er lobby, owned and op- erated by politicians across the board. The CM has a right to be an- gry , he added. Until recently, the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alli- ance was in power at the Aurangabad Mu- nicipal Corporation (AMC), until an admin- istrator took charge af- ter the tenure of the civic body ended. The BJP has upped the ante and launched public protests over the water crisis, with an eye on the civic corporation elections that will be held over the next few months. At Thursday’s meet- ing, the CM directed divisional commission- ers to look into how much water can be add- ed to the existing water supply system in the district to ease the prob- lems faced by citizens. He also threatened action against the con- tractors for slow-pedal- ling the work. Water crisis in the district has parched citizens, as they survive without it in 5-day stretches Over the last few years, three contractors took up the project but left the work unfinished in the wake of public protests and a politico-tanker lobby nexus. Moreover, recent cost escalations of the pipeline material after the Centre hiked prices of certain commodities have been witnessed.
