3. Masthead
Bold, large, simple and white masthead,
eye-catching to the audience. The font is
san serif and written in capital letters stand
out. This is to create brand awareness.
Other magazines which have used this type
of masthead are:
}
4. Sell line
Sell line is a common convention used
within music magazines. This informs
the reader that this is a music
magazine and acts as an slogan for the
magazine. Usually placed underneath
the masthead and very plain and
simple. Examples are Q and MNE
magazines:
5. Main image
Medium close up of the model which refers to the anchor
text. Use of direct mode of address to create a connection
to the reader a very common convention of magazines.
Image focuses on her beauty another common convention.
Colours very light to make the anchor quote stand out in
order for that to be the main focus. Examples
6. Anchor text
This is the artists name, in bold red to stand
out against the image for the fans. The second
largest text after the masthead to show
importance. Examples of anchor texts are:
Billboard Kerrang!
NME
7. Features
Tells the reader what the magazine includes, for them to
recognise any celebrities they are interested in. located on
the left side so it wouldn’t overpower the main image.
Simple house font bold and white to with red ‘+’ contrast
to colour scheme. Examples of these conventions:
Billboard Rolling stones Q
8. Pull quote
Creates the audience an intrest, refers to
the main article and the main image in
contrast to the focus of this specific issue.
Very short, yet in red to make it bold to
stand out. Examples of this:
Q
NME
Rolling Stones
9. Flash
Bold with contrasting colours new font
used. Stands out because of the shape
therefore is more eye-catching. Draws in
the audience as they are able to participate
in a competition. Examples of this
convention:
Kerrang!
Q
10. House style
I have chosen my house style to be white black and
red. These colours are to music magazines. I wanted to
use more common conventions so it would be
recognisable to the audience rather than challenging
the convention. These are some examples:
12. Masthead
Large bold capital letters including the
name of the magazine to create
recognition of the magazine. Informing
the readers what is on this page.
Examples of this:
13. Features
The title of the features is bold in black font and in a red
box and stands out. The colours contrast with the cover
of the magazine. Below this is a break down of what is
in the magazine with small detail to give a little more
information to the reader, this is a use of uses and
gratification theory. each separate feature was put into
its own box with included numbering for easy
navigation. Examples are:
NME
14. Numbering
Large red numbers and different to the house style, for
the audience no navigate easier which is made for the
convenience of the reader as well as to stand out. The
reason for the use of these are to inform the reader what
article is located on which page. Examples of these are:
Kerrang! Q
15. Images
The image taken of the models are mid-shot this makes
a clear outlook on the expressions of them as well as
easily recognisable for the audience, and the image of
the festival in a long shot of the stage to be able to see
the crowd adding a different type of photo so there is no
continues repetition. I’ve also put them on the right
hand side to make it look tidy and organised. Examples
are: QNMEBillboard
16. Subscription offers
I’ve added a subscription box, this is
where the audience is able to constantly
get the magazine every month, this is
created for convenience of them and it
reduces the costs of the magazine. This
convention I mainly found in the NME and
Kerrang! magazine contents page:
NME
Kerrang!
17. Social media links
The social media links are very important
due to the amount of teenagers and
young adults using it, so therefore I put
them at the bottom of the page for my
target audience of 16-24 year olds to
follow the pages and keep them up to
date with news as well as when the next
issue of the magazine is coming out. This
will give the magazine free promotion and
a wider spread audience. Most of the
music magazines already advertise on
social media therefore its good to try to
overcome competition.
18. Columns
I had separated the page into two columns which gave
the magazine a more professional and organised look,
this gives easy navigation for the reader as they see
which stories are the most important on the right hand
side (demonstrated by large images) and all of the
features on the left hand side. Examples of these are:
Q NME Kerrang!
20. Layout
One whole left hand side of the page is used for the image
the is to draw the reader in and create attention towards
the model as she is of great importance and that the
whole article is devoted to her. After the focus is drawn to
her name which is in bold and red as its very eye-catching
and creates consistency of the colour red, from the
contents and the cover page. I’ve also added a large letter
‘K’ in capitals as it’s a convention of other music
magazines, this will continue the trend. Some example of
this are from Q magazine:
21. Image
The image of the model is a medium shot this allows the
reader to see more of the model than on the cover and on
the contents page. Use of direct mode of address, this will
make the reader feel a personal relationship/connection
to the model, this is a use of uses and gratification theory.
The colours of the image are very bright which also can
give the reader a focus on the models style and make-up.
Uses of these types of images were shown on these music
magazines:
Q Kerrang! Vibe
22. Text/ anchor text
Anchor text is very bold and stands out from
the rest of the text, this also informs the
reader of who they are reading about, usage
of uses and gratification theory. Where as the
text is very simple and easy to read in black so
it overpowers the ‘K’ in the background.
This is an example pf these
conventions from Q magazine:
23. Columns
I’ve used the convention of using 3 equal
length columns for the text, this makes the
double page look professional and neat, as
well as organised. By creating these columns I
was able to put in a pull quote in between so
then the text surrounds it. Other magazines
which have used this are:
Q Vibe
24. Pull quote
The pull quote is in larger font as well as in
capitals than the rest of the text to stand out
and draw attention. I changed the colour to
blue which does not follow the colour scheme
as red, black and white have been used too
often, so it’s more eye-catching than the rest
of the text. Examples of pull quotes are:
BillboardNME
Q
25. Page numbers and drop cap
The page numbers are located at the bottom
of the page with the masthead next to it, this
is able to create awareness of the brand. The
drop caps are the single large letters which are
made for a beginning of new topic in the text,
this will engage the reader to continue reading
the article. Q
