HOW EFFEC TIVE IS THE
COMBINATION O F YOUR MAIN
PRODUC T AND ANCILLARY TEXTS ?
MY POSTER
This poster effectively links to my film
because of it’s colour pallet of blue,
purple, white and grey which is
consistent throughout my film.
Additionally, the mysterious tone
which is simulated by the poster’s
use of low-key lighting and subtle use
of colour connotes the plot twist that
is unexpected by the audience as he
gets locked in school overnight.
The images used for this poster link
directly to the plot of After Hours as
we see a school in the early hours of
the morning. This suggests a hopeful
tone to the film, connoting that Don
make sit through the night locked in
school.
Additionally, the silhouetted image of
Don and Libby at the bottom of the
page directly links to the scene in the
film where the father and daughter
enjoy their pancakes together.
MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Unfortunately this print screen crops the bottom of this dps off and therefore you are unable to see the page number, date and magazine name which is
a convention for magazines, however, we can probably see enough for this analysis.
The colour pallet of blue, grey and white is carried forwards onto this page from my film and poster to effectively tie all of my
products together professionally.
To create this dps and ensure that
the piece looks polished and of an
industry standard, I have followed
the conventions of film magazine
articles, including inserting a small
drop down of some other short films
to add weight to the impact of the
page and make it look more
believable.
REVIEW PURPOSE
The purpose of a film review is to inform, describe, analyse and advise. I believe my article does so effectively. Admittedly this review is biased as the
creators of the film wrote the article.. But I believe this helps to sell the film effectively .I have aimed to follow the thematic pattern of my film’s
appearance, including the colour pallet, however, as this article is from a third party source, the director wouldn’t have a say over how this article is
printed. To show this, I have slightly knocked the colour pallet by using more of a teal colour instead of the blues seen in my film.
FILM PURPOSE
Our film’s purpose is to challenge the hegemonic ideologies enforced on society today in a
way which allows the audience to laugh along with Don as he struggles through his
misfortune. In the film, we see our protagonist casually struggling against depression,
feeling inferior against his colleagues who seem to be more successful than he is,
neglecting feelings towards Anna due to his self-critical mind-set and meanwhile all of these
aspects of self-analysis are being confirmed by his disinterested and cruel students.
The message of our film is to separate yourself from hegemonic ideologies so that all of
society’s pressures fall away and you are left to be happy in our own skin. This is the
journey we see Don undertake within After Hours.
The dark-comedy genre lends it’s self well to topics like this, as I saw in Little Horses and
1500 Words, you are able to deliver very vital messages without labouring them onto your
audience. If I were to deliver the same message but through a drama, the film would be
extremely heavy and moreover, similar to many other films that have already been created.
It’s easy to upset someone with film, it’s not so easy to make them smile.
H O W E F F E C T I V E I S Y O U R C O M B I N AT I O N O F
M A I N P R O D U C T A N D A N C I L L A R Y TA S K S ?
The purpose of the ancillary tasks are to support, promote and inform your audience about the film that you
have created. Whilst the poster intends to sell the film in the most attractive form possible, the review has a
merit of truth to it’s writing, selling the film as an outsiders perspective.
We have taken a more mysterious tone to our poster so that we can attract audiences who will appreciate the
nuances in our plot, nonetheless, we chose to fill the majority of the poster with the morning sky to add the
hopeful, optimistic theme that plays a part in our film’s intended message. Additionally, I have chosen to
overlay the outline of Don onto the poster , without any features or detail to highlight that this is a film of self
discovery.
I have colour graded all three products so that their combination looks aesthetic and professional.
AT T R A C T I N G AU D I E N C E S
We have chosen rate our film 12A as the plot of the film could be seen as distressing, however, the humour
included in the film would appeal to younger children due to it’s physical nature. Specifically, my intended
audience for After Hours is white, British, A-C1, Students or family oriented individuals who are educated,
particularly film enthusiasts.
My products address this audience due to the use of this demographic of people being seen within the film.
Initially, we can tell from the poster that I am aiming at middle class families due to the incorporation of a
public school on the front as well as two figures who appear t be father and daughter. Equally, in the review
this is clear through he stills used from the film which show Don and his daughter as well as the interior of a
public school. My audience will be able to identify with this lifestyle and the struggles he is faced with. This
identification will hereby make my intended message more powerful towards the correct audience.
C O N C LU S I O N
In conclusion, my three products are very effectively combined due to the continued use of the blue, purple, white, black and grey colour pallet which
creates a universal aesthetic between the products, connoting that each belong to the same project.
Equally, we are delivered similar tones and themes throughout each product: a peaceful optimism, the theme of self-discovery, the importance of family…
etc.
Furthermore, all three products are linked together strongly through the groups of audience that are attracted due to the strong representation of paralleled
demographics within the characters.
In summary, I believe my three products work well together and all help to promote After Hours successfully.
