Question 2-Representation
How are the people represented in my
magazine ? (Front cover)
The people in my magazine are represented to display
connotations of the rock genre. As you can see in my front cover
the model is biting the guitar neck. This connotes violence and
aggression which are common themes of rock.
How are the people represented in my
magazine ? (Double Page Spread)
In my double page spread the
model has a blank stare. This
gives the reader the impression
that the model is intimidating
which is a common theme in the
rock genre.
How are the people represented in my
magazine ? (Contents Page)
In the contents page there is a variety of images used
where people are presented in many different ways. For
example the main image used on the contents page the
model is looking away from the camera which gives an
aggressive impression on the audience. The model also has
their hands together in front of their body which shows
that they have closed body language. This implies that they
keep to themselves and that the aren't talkative and may
also show aggression.
How have you used technical elements to
create these representations? (Front Cover)
Camera Work- The image was a medium close up because I wanted it to seem like the
artist was up in the readers face. I also used lighting to make half of the artists face
look like its in a shadow. I did this because it implies that the artist has a light and a
dark side which overall connotes that the artist is sometimes aggressive.
Mise-en-scene- The artist is wearing s black shirt which relates to the rock genre as
black is the most common colour that links with the rock genre because of its gothic
relevance. The artist is also holding a guitar, this represents that they are a musician.
The artist is also represented as aggressive as they have tattoos which are extremely
common in the rock genre as most artists have them. They are commonly associated
with prisoners and gang members.
Colour- The colours used were specifically chosen as they represent themes of the
rock genre. For example red was used because it is the colour of the devil and blood
which are both very aggressive connotations. Black is also used, black is a colour
commonly associated with Goths and evil.
Typography-The fonts used present a variety of different associations. For example the
masthead is in an eroded, distorted, gritty font. This gives the impression that the
magazine is raw and tough.
How have you used technical elements to
create these representations? (Front Cover)
Camera Work-This image is a medium shot from
slightly above. This makes the reader seem like
they are above the artist. Lighting is once again
used to make half of the artist’s face shadowed.
This gives the impression that there is two sides to
this artist. This presents the artist as dangerous as
you wouldn’t want to get on their dark side.
Mise-en-scene- The model is wearing black gives
gothic implications , along with the tattoos the
model is represented as scary and dangerous
because they look intimidating.
Colour-The colour palette used on the double page
spread features colours that is highly represents
the how people feel about the rock genre. For
example the audience of the rock magazine are
gothic therefore they would find the black and
dark colours appealing.
Typography- The fonts used on the double page represent rock
stereotypes. Stereotypically the audience are brittle and harsh
meaning that the cover story represents the audience meaning that
they will find it appealing increasing the overall appeal to the
magazine.
