The document discusses the use of color and fonts in a magazine targeted towards a rock music audience. On the cover, contents page, and double page spread, red, yellow, black, and white are used as they connote violence and the rock genre. Sans serif fonts are also used as they appeal to the target audience. The layout follows the "route of the eye" to guide readers through the magazine in a clear, structured way, consistent with conventions of rock magazines.

Audience appeal
1. How my magazine appeals to the
target audience.
Dale Richardson
2. Colours on front cover.
The colours on the front cover are red, yellow, white,
blue and black. The reason for choosing these colours
is because they are conventional to the rock genre
and give the connotations that we expect from the
rock genre. Also from the research I did on my target
audience I received feedback that stated that these
colours would be appealing to them.
The reason for using black and red is because they
connote violence, this connotation is conventional of
the rock genre and would be an appropriate colour
choice for the magazine as it is related to the genre.
I used the other colours of yellow and white as these
support the base colours of red and black and
contrast with the black background allowing specific
sections to stand out more than others.
3. Colours on contents page.
The colours I have used on the contents page are the
same as on the front cover, red, yellow black and
white. This shows the house style of the magazine
which is conventional for the genre as existing
magazines use the same or similar colours on most of
the pages.
I have made sure that I used colours that contrast
allowing parts of the magazine to stand out more than
others. Yellow on black allows the yellow text to be
eye catching and draw the attention.
The use of these colours allow the magazine to get
the rock genre feel and generate an atmosphere that
conveys the message that it is a rock magazine.
4. Colours on double page spread.
The colours used on the double page spread are
white, yellow and red. These colours were present on
the cover and contents page and are of the same
colour as the bands heading. This keeps the house
style of the magazine and helps to create a brand
identity and helps create recognisability.
The use of having the body text in white and the
background in black allows the text to stand out and
draw attention.
I chose to stay with the black background as this helps
show the connotations of the genre of magazine and
keep consistency in the magazine.
5. Fonts on the cover.
On my front cover I have used a variety of fonts for
different areas of the cover. I have used a font from
the internet for the masthead, fonts from the
programme I made the cover in for the cover story,
fonts from the programme for the cover lines and
fonts from the programme for the puffs.
My fonts are conventional for the genre as they are
sans serif and in colours that connote violence. They
are all bold and stand out which draws attention to
them and appeals to the target audience.
6. Fonts on contents page.
The fonts on the contents page are similar to the fonts
on the front cover, this shows a consistent house style
for the magazine and creates a brand identity.
These fonts stand out to the reader.
The fonts for the headers of each content category is
in the same font and colour which show consistency
and are easier to navigate.
The fonts for the masthead are bold and bright which
make them stand out and clear to read.
I have made the main font bolder than the smaller
text to make them stand out and make them easy to
read and navigate.
7. Fonts on double page spread.
The fonts on the double page spread are less varied
than previous pages as I wanted to keep the body text
the same so that it was clear and easy to read.
The fonts used on the double page spread are those
that have been used on previous pages so that the
house style of the magazine is kept.
The fonts used are all sans serif which is conventional
to the rock genre, and appeals to the target audience.
I have included various font sizes and boldness to
make certain parts stand out more than others.
The pull quote is in a larger size and boldness which
breaks up the text and makes it stand out more on
that specific part of the page.
8. Content of magazine and articles.
As this magazine is a rock magazine, the target
audience will be interested in music specifically rock.
So the main information on the front cover is
information about what is going to be inside the
magazine.
The use of a pull quote on the front cover attracts the
audience and makes them wonder what the article is
about.
I’ve included featured articles on the top and bottom
of the cover that are in borders that attract attention.
I’ve included cover lines to add extra information
about what is in the magazine also.
So the content on the front cover is good in appealing
to the audience as it encourages them to read on and
purchase the magazine.
9. Content of contents page
The contents page is typical of a professional
magazine as it contains all of the conventional
elements of a contents page.
The image used on this page is to attract attention
and use the route of the eye layout, this attracts
attention of the reader.
One main feature of the contents page is that it
contains a subscription offer at the bottom, this is
conventional for rock magazines and music magazines
in general as most if not all music magazines have a
subscription offer in them at a good price.
10. Content of double page spread.
My double page spread is conventional and appeals to
the target audience as it has small scattered images
on it that draw attention.
The use of a pull quote allows for the text to broken
up and easy to read rather than a large bulk text. The
stand first allows for a brief informative paragraph to
be incorporated that gives a short outline about what
is in the article and what is the main context.
The use of a kicker allows for the reader to find where
the article starts and draws attention into this
particular part of the article. The use of a kicker is also
an aesthetically pleasing feature as it is something
that looks good on the page.
The article is appealing as it contains informal
language and an opportunity to connect with the
artist. The article is in a question and answer format
which allows the reader to navigate easily and find
the part of the article they would like to read.
11. Layouts
The layouts of the pages are conventional to the
genre as they all use the route of the eye. This is
something that is in all rock magazines and that is
why I incorporated it.
The layout of the pages is ordered meaning that it is
easy to navigate around the page and understand
each bit clearly. This is conventional as rock
magazines have a structured layout in comparison to
pop which has a cluttered layout because pop is
more of a fun genre, rock however is a smarter genre
so is in a structured layout for this reason.
