2. Front cover
This front cover, has the colour cohesion of red white and blue, I feel this
emphasise to the audience that they are a British magazine, who are interested in
British artist and events, which therefore target a domestic audience.
They use same iconic feature on this edition of Kerrang to any other, of having a
torn away look.
The main call out is right in the middle of the page which breaks the expected
convention of a music magazine of having all callouts in columns I feel this shows
that kerrang advertise to an audience who feel different and want to break the
rules.
Unlike most music magazines, who have iconography of one artist, featuring on
their front cover, on this edition of kerrang there are 5 artist featured on the front
cover, for example green day. However the main piece of iconography which is
used as the foreground image for this music magazine is all time low. I feel this
shows to their target audiences that they aren’t so narrow minded and they know
that the rock industry has too many influential people to focus on one.
The mast head ‘karrang’ has an onomatopoeia sound too it, making us imagine
a noise of clashing together or of something loud, representing to the target
audience they like to mess around and take things too far. The font of the mast
head creates a broken splitting effect by the lines across it representing to the
target audience that they are a magazine presenting artist that have an edge to
them.
3. Contents
When viewing this contents page, we can see the cohesion
between the page and the front cover, by the way kerrang
has kept its quirky playfulness that keeps the magazine
iconic.
The main call out Is at the top of the page, with the
forground image shows how people have came together in
a positive environment that is obviously connected to
kerrangs magazine. The sell line as seen is the front cover
reappears as the main call out, however is a contrasting
colour, showing that there could be different interpretations
of the article.
Unlike the front cover colour cohesion of red white and
blue the contents page consists of the colour cohesion red
black and yellow, showing how kerrang have so many ideas
and influences. The contrast of colours can also keep the
reader attached by subconsciously realising the change.
4. Double page spread
This double page spread, can immediately identify the audience that the
magazine is of a rock genre, one in which this is done is by the iconography,
of billie joel Armstrong, his mise en scene of a black gituar and having eye
make up automatically is a code to the audience that the piece is to do
with rock.
The call out on the left hand side of the page ‘bullet in a bow tie’ suggests to
the audience, something that can destroy or cause some one a lot of pain
like a bullet, has a quirky different side to him with similar characteristic like
the character unjine in grease, having these characteristic can be an
unregularly thing to see in people, therefore makes it more confusing to the
audience, encouraging them to read the article.
The colour cohesion of this music magazine is green and white, I think this
links to the iconography of green day, which helps market the page to the
viewer. I think this colour cohesion is not a regular one you find in double
page spreads of music magazine, therefore present kerrang as a daring
magazine.
The article for this dps is at the bottom left hand corner, this article is not the
longest of articles due to it being a news page which we know from the call
out, I feel that they have decided not to make the article the longest, is due
to allowing more room for the iconography, as they know that would grab
the readers attention, leading them to read the article, therefore kerrang
kept the article short however fully packed with information
5. Promotion
This dps is split into two halves, the first half consist of news advertisement off newly
released albums, TV shows, books and comics. This is done in a black, white and
red colour cohesion, I feel this is done due to the black and white being a real
contrast to one another and the red being a really strong bold colour, there fore
this page automations captures the readers attention. On the first half of the
page kerrang are showing ‘A grave new world’ advertising to the target market,
dark deep music for them to enjoy. There is a call out in the middle of the first
page, that uses a small amount of synergy, by placing the tv show American
horror story into the magazine, this book links to the magazine as they are both
highly rated, therefore by coming together they should be able to create a larger
profit. Due to kerrang being one of britians most successful magazines, more
companies and artist are going to pay kerrang to advertise their music as they
know that it will pay of and both companies will end up making a large profit.
On the next side of this dps, there is a promotional poster for a ‘deftones’ concert.
At the very top of this page there is a small header stating ‘A live nation
presentation in association with ITB’ this shows a sense of cross media
convergence as different companies like ITB and kerrang magazine are coming
together to try and increase viewers for their companies long term but also the
deftones.
I like the colour cohesion of black and white, showing the viewer that everything
they need to know is there is front of them, giving them confidence. Further more I
think that the font of the heading and subheading are very effective, as it shows
the reader that getting involved is as simple and they are showing you, using
these different techniques.
6. Festivals
Rock is a large genre of music, therefore people like to
listen to the music in many different ways. One of the
reason that karrang is so successful, is that it gives their
target audience what they want, which is the
information in which allows them to listen to their
favourite bands in their favourite style possible.
One way in which this is. Is festivals, therefore on this
page, kerrang advertises bands that their target
market would be aware off are attending the festival.
However karrang do this is a convention that we are
aware of, by having a colour cohesion of blue red
and white, which is the same to our front cover, which
advertises to their target audience that this is a British
festival.
Another way in which karrang make this page iconic, is
by creating a border that looks like it have been torn
away, creating the broken effect.
7. Layout
The text of the article of this dps, is in columns to
creating a professional look, however to show how
kerrang like to be iconic, they decide to create all
text on a diagonal.
The main call out goes across both pages, as this
creates a more eye catching sell line, attracting the
reader. This call out is also on a diagonal, creating a
sense of purpose, and organisation
The iconography is slightly off centred, however over
laps the margin, creating a sense of going out side
the box, which is the main unique selling point for
kerrang.
There is a puff in the middle of the article. This has
been delibralty placed there to draw the reader to
the article, as when seeing the sell line it encourages
them to start reading as its right in front of them.
8. Feed back pages
Having a magazine product that includes a feedback
page, is going to encourage your target audience, as
they are given a sense of connection to your magazine.
There fore one of the reasons kerrang is successful is
because they have created a page, that allows the
member of the public to be part of karrange by giving
them an opportunity to feedback about their thoughts
and feelings. This page advertises to gain feed back
from as many viewers as possible by having a range of
sections, from comic strips to the charts to a completion
to win tickets, making it more enjoyable for the reader to
get involved.
The layout of this page, makes sure everything Is separated,
by having different boxes across the page, meaning the
item that appeals to you most is easy to locate. There is
a simple colour cohesion of red blue and yellow which
all contrast with one another due to the brightness of the
colours, there for emphases the separation. Not too
much information or images or call outs were used here
therefore doesn’t look over complicated to the viewer.
9. DPS Artical
The colour cohesion for this article is red white and
blue, linking to the main colour scheme on the
front cover shows that this article is the main focus
of this edition of kerrang. This article is a news
article which we know front the puff on the left
hand side. Instead of having columns of text, this
news article is split into separate boxes with a
different piece of iconography, which ass seem to
be in a framed border, showing the reader that
slipknot are a valuable band in the music industry.
Due to all the text being broken down, it makes it
easier to read for the viewer, and also makes it
more eyecatching.
