The student used the pen tool in Photoshop to cut out and select the area they wanted to color in for their Opie self-portrait. They then used the paint brush tool to fill in the selected area with color, finding it easy to stay within the lines as the area remained highlighted. While they were successful completing the assignment, the student felt they could improve it next time by adding more detail.

1. Opie self portrait evaluation
When making my Opie self-portrait on Photoshop I didn’t use many
tools. The main tool I used was the pen tool.
I used this tool to cut around the area I wanted to colour, I preferred
the pen tool to the magnetic lasso tool because you get better results,
I only use the lasso tool for really rough cuts. I find that using the pen
tool us much quicker than the lasso tool. Once the area on my original
picture I wanted was cut around, I right clicked and then clicked
‘make selection’; this highlights the area you want.
When it’s highlighted you can move on to using the next tool.
The next tool I used was the paint brush tool, with this I simply
selected the colour I wanted to use in the bottom left of the program
and then just clicked around the highlighted area, the brush will
never go out of line as long as the area is still highlighted.
I didn’t find using any of the tools difficult as I have used them in the
past at home.
I think I was quite successful at completing the given brief. If I were
to improve it next time, I think I’d add detail to it.
