The combination of the documentary, magazine poster, and magazine double page spread were effective promotional materials. The documentary focused on bullying in schools. The poster and double page spread used a black and white color scheme to match the mood of the documentary. A main character from the documentary was featured prominently to help audiences connect the materials. Some additional variety in images used could have improved the double page spread. Overall, the design elements like characters, color scheme, and text style helped audiences recognize the relationship between the promotional pieces and the documentary.
2. My main product which I created was a documentary, the first ancillary task which I created was a magazine poster
advertising the documentary and the second task created was a magazine double page spread with an article
based on my documentary. I was pleased with how the construction went for these two tasks and the final
designs. My poster and DPS will be easily recognised by my audience mainly through the colour scheme and text.
The colour scheme is a standard black and white and easily recognisable but it is the text which audiences will
most likely recognise with these two adverts. The text is edited to have a blurred distorted look and noticeable for
the audience when looking at any of the adverts. If I was to redo these tasks the only thing that I would alter
would be the images used in my DPS. I think that the images are successful in terms of presenting what the
documentary is about, but I would have preferred to have a better variety of images. For example showing
different locations and interior locations within the school because a lot of mine are just of outside locations.
3. Characters
Characters are a key feature when it comes to the audience making connections between the adverts
and the documentary. The teacher who is the large image on the DPS is a main character and talks
very often throughout my documentary and plays a large role and is somebody that would be
associated with the documentary by the public. By the character being the main image on the DPS it
not only shows the audience that this character is important to the documentary but also now this
character will be associated with the title. The use of this character help to create a link between the
DPS and documentary and makes the DPS identifiable for the audience to make a connection.
4. In comparison to other established and professional posters my poster follows the conventions which
these other posters do. For example here is an image of an E4 poster for the documentary Embarrassing
bodies. As you can see this poster is very simple and just states the needed information. I have followed
these conventions to a point by keeping my poster basic. I decided to only include one main central
image, a title and the information that the audience needs. On the other hand I decided to incorporate
my own design to this which other posters do not.
5. Design
The design of the two ancillary texts are highly important when it come to the audience identifying them with
each other and the documentary. The first clear link that I made for the two ancillary texts was the colour scheme,
the colour scheme focused on dark dull colours and a simple black and white. These colours not only created a
connection between the two ancillary texts but also the documentary. I think that the colour scheme of the
ancillary tasks are more than suitable for the documentary as they relate and work well with the mood and
atmosphere the documentary creates. The short clip for my documentary focused on bullying therefore the dark,
dull colours helped to create a certain mood that would come with bullying. Also with great importance in the
design of my ancillary tasks is the costume. Clearly because the documentary is about school and located in school
it was only suitable that the characters on the ancillary tasks were wearing the correct costume such as school
uniform for students and formal wear for teachers. The costume and colour scheme work well together on the
poster because the uniform that the student is wearing is black with a white shirt this not only looks good because
of the contrast of the colours but also suits the mood and atmosphere trying to be put across by the documentary.
6. Another feature of the poster I was more than pleased with was the idea to have low opacity and
slightly faded words throughout the background of the poster. I thought that feature worked well
with the atmosphere of the ancillary tasks and the documentary. Examples of these words are
School, Anger, Fear and stress, these are all words which could relate to and describe the way that
students may be feeling. I like the way that the words are surrounding the student on the poster
which could show the student as feeling surrounded or uncomfortable which matches the
descriptive words.
The way the words are presented in this faded, low opacity form give the look that the words are
thoughts that the student may be thinking or emotions the student is feeling. This works well and
represents the documentary in the correct way.
